For example, they put a downspout directly over an electrical outlet, and they replaced items on our house that were NOT the rotted ones. We had to call them back to move the downspout so it wouldn't block the outlet, and to replace the correct items; they got angry and blamed US for cutting into their profit because doing the work the right way would cost them money. Second, they cut corners or use cheap materials despite the impact on their customers; for example, they used plastic gutter brackets that broke in a season instead of metal ones that hold up year after year. Third, good builders try to think ahead and account for contingencies in a project in advance and fairly, but in our experience Powell didn't use its imagination because it just put all risk of an unknown or cost overrun on us. This can result in large avoidable and unnecessary costs for the homeowner. Third, being lawyers, we recognized that proposals Powell gave us, which become binding contracts once signed, were, in our opinion, unfairly one-sided -- they protected only Powell in any contingency that arose during their work and if any litigation came from the contract. We tried to change this to protect ourselves too, but could not. We have found other builders who are fairer from the get-go, or who will promptly agree to changes to lopsided proposals, and such an attitude speaks volumes. Last, but certainly not least, we foolishly didn't get other bids for a few jobs that Powell did. When we wised up, we found that Powell cost 2-4 times what other builders did for the jobs we were doing. Bottom line -- we caution anyone considering using The Powell Company.

I needed two large gable windows installed in my attic. Before the scheduled quote I explained that my contractor would create the frame and another company was making the windows. We needed their installation services because, as you can imagine, a crane of some sort would be needed to elevate and hold in place the large windows. We also have other windows that needed to be replaced throughout the house. Upon arrival, Daniel saw the window cutouts and proceeded to work him self into a frenzy. He claimed that "he did not install other people's windows and that we are wasting his time". My wife tried to explain, but he would not let her get a word in. At that point, due to his unprofessional and aggressive behavior my wife politely told him that this isn't going to work and asked him to leave. He started becoming more irate and raised his hand at her as if to back hand slap her. Please never use Madison Vinyl Windows. Daniel Kurtz is a bigoted coward. Surprising how much more air comes through new screen. They all look and function very well. I also have an odd sized slider door that has not had a screen slider from the time I bought the home almost 6 years ago. Despite constant searching, I never found what would fit, even called a local company that did my garage screen units at my old home, and they failed to show for 2 years and many calls later. John took the measurements and provided a solid metal framed slider which now allows for more cross breeze on those windy days. Nice person, leaves no tell tail evidence of work behind. Highly recommend!

I had thought that part of the opening was funky and they took care of it the second they discovered it and did an amazing job repairing it. The procedure was perfect. The door is incredible. After I bought the wrong doors that he…read moretried to install, he came back with a great solution and recommended his choice of doors and waved the installation fee of the bad door. When everything came in, he installed two doors plus replaced an overhead door with a solid, double door to the cellar. He was on time, finished ahead of schedule and his products are excellent. My father had received a quote for replacing a bay window from another company in town that he had hired before. That other company looked to take advantage of that and quoted my father a price of $10,000 to replace it. I got involved and looked for other options and was truly fortunate to find J&D Windows and Doors. First off, the price was a FRACTION of what the first company quoted, but more than that David really took in a genuine interest in discussing all the options with my father so that my father was comfortable knowing he was getting exactly what he wanted. The other company took a more cookie cutter approach and was more interested in seeing dollar signs than customer satisfaction.. Due to Covid, supply was interrupted so the new window couldn't be installed when initially scheduled. That had nothing to do with J&D but David still gave my father a discount due to the inconvenience. Completely unnecessary but most appreciated and just a classy move on his part. All told, the work to take out the old bay and put in the new took little more than a morning with a little finishing to be done the next day. The result was amazing and my father was completely overjoyed with the result and I echo how well it turned out. I and my father, recommend J&D thoroughly, absolutely and whole heartedly.

We also had someone from Slag visit the site daily and check in. Slag sent a different team to install the gutters, and these gutters are already causing problems for us, including water that drips right onto the front steps and creates ice piles in the winter. Roof looks great though! Thorough clean-up job after it was done too.

TLDR Rent a lift/scaffold. Opinion: not professional, not respectful. Why? See below…read more -Unsealed interior rated finger jointed pine used on exterior repairs, including crucial high-moisture window drip caps. Exterior primer was billed to me, and not used consistently, nor even stirred. How do I know? Material has Lowes barcode. Unstirred primer left sitting in the garage, lid off, immediately after use. They did things like prime half of a board I asked to be primed, only the part I could see at the time. I didn't discover the cut corners till after. -Porch roof was damaged irreparably during gutter install with holes that could not be sealed with washers. Yes it was replaced, but I was the one noting the damage through an inspection. Crooked screws on replacement. Narrowly avoided an entire whole house roof disaster. Ripped gutter screw washers, no sealant. Neglectful. -I've got a gutter downspout installed seam side down (the only one on the house for an obviously good reason) that now leaks onto my window. Has to be flipped. By me. -Employers smoking in my garage with stored furniture in it. Disrespectful. Butts were thrown in my dried leaves. Someone was "corrected" for this, but it didn't stop the smoking. Smoking on my roof. Ever heard of house fires from embers and leaves? -Raw jagged metal edges and huge amounts of caulking on aluminum fascia wrap that was supposed to be installed neatly without raw edges per the contract. Was told on that improptu four day visit in fall 2026 ("you'll be there, right?"--not consensual) that a hole put in a piece of it would be addressed Fri, then it was refused to be addressed that day. Was instead ordered around to sign off on caulking. One of the holes is the size of my pinky nail. The nails were not nailed in flush, either--I nailed them in. At some point during the visit, the one employee was screaming at the other employee not to talk to me about the fact that the board installed was separating from house. Not sure if board was fixed, tbh. -Fascia board installed, I was told upon replacement, was held in by caulk. -Window drip cap installed that was not even a full board, allowing potential for major water intrusion. At least one of them was sloped towards my house, rotting out after one winter. I replaced six window drip caps myself. -Exterior sills cut short of the frame and covered with caulking. One not secured to the house framing. Replaced them myself.  -I have no idea what I was charged for in their accounting, overall, given that the main time and material repair was the drip caps. At some point I was sent a spreadsheet indicating dates of service I apparently paid for that had no correspondence to reality as to when people were at my home working. That made me very uncomfortable. No explanation was ever given for that. I cannot publicly speculate as to why that would be, but none of the possible reasons add up to anything that I am comfortable with. Also, why am I a customer being asked to interpret internal accounting documentation that I had no role in constructing? I would prefer not to know at this point. -Despite agreement reaffirmed three times via email (in July-Sep 2025) to provide reimbursement on drip cap time and material repairs, based on the time it takes me, as part of the agreement about removing my review, I have received nothing. I requested a response via an official letter in March 2026 after waiting months, and got nothing. So then I filed a BBB complaint where the company accused me of acting arbitrarily in requesting follow through on the agreement. Did not directly respond to my reasonable proposal for calculating a reimbursement of 2.5 hrs per window times 1/2 the hourly rate I paid (6*2.5*95*1.8). They "stand by" a low number without presenting justification, but I do not expect to ever see that money because the main agreement was that I remove my review until matters are resolved, but with my review withheld for almost a year now and based on the new customer reviews coming in, why would they? My money isn't "real", so I've been told. Pics on Google.
