One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics.

Some sort of meat (beef/pork/lamp/chicken/vegetarian option, plus roasted potatoes, veggies, gravy, and Yorkshire pudding (a sort of conical croissant?))). My SO had the Sunday roast customized for her in her inimitable way, but was still not pleased. I ordered off the regular menu, and loved it, so 5 stars! She can set up her own Yelp account if she wants to argue. The service was friendly and helpful (although once the food was served, we didn't see them again. This is kind of normal for UK pubs? I feel like the booze options on Yelp need updating: beer, wine, straight liquor and gin & tonics. Maybe call it Uk pub full bar? No martinis or Moscow mules here.) Our server (south Asian dude, helpful, accommodating, and friendly) was awesome, but so were the other staff (2 nice young ladies of different ethnic ancestry), so basically across the board great service. Weather was great, so we enjoyed people watching from our outdoor seats (Daunt book totes are definitely a thing here. Even when the bookshop in question is closed)

Beautiful service, lovely staff the food is incredible. The ceramic plates and serveware, warm-atmosphere -just top notch. This place is a gem. However, this place was a pleasant surprise on a long weekend trip to London. Visiting Portobello market in the morning and being hungry at lunch, we stopped there just by accident, which we rarely do without consulting apps like, e.g., Yelp. (Would we had checked on Yelp, we probably wouldn't have gone.) Space was rare, so we were seated at the bar area with a full-scale view of the kitchen. Dishes (I posted some photos) served in a sharing/tapas style, the menu consisting of a variety of starters, grilled vegetables, and deliciously prepped meat options. Watching the chefs preparing the food right before us made the experience even more fascinating. We ordered six plates and all of them were very delicious. The service was quick and exceptionally friendly, paying attention to every detail. Before clearing our check, we were asked by someone of the senior staff (or owner?) if we were happy with our lunch. We confirmed that all was very good; just the squid was a little chewy (but still good). To our surprise, he insisted on taking it off the bill immediately. Well, he didn't have to because we ate it and were happy, but hey, it's one more of many, many reasons to give this place a full five stars.

Having said that, I would highly recomment The Magazine for an early breakfast before the crowds arrive. We had the most enjoyable morning, sipping coffee and choosing from a good selection of sweet temptations - cake for breakfast is perfectly OK! They have quite a tasty sounding menu of savoury breakfast items (including the aforementioned omelette). I think I ticked "not suitable for children" when I checked in, and I was wrong. They are perfectly happy accommodating families and don't seem to mind sticky crumbs strewn all over their elegant pale grey carpets. The perfect start to a day in the park. I have previously been for afternoon tea by which time the restaurant is crazy busy and you are lucky to get a seat on one of their shared tables.
