    Oysters and Salmon Sashimi
    Alexander H.

Good looking - food average at best After walking along the whole Portobello Road we were a bit thirsty and hungry. This pub looked very welcoming and the signs "fresh Oysters" made us going in. It is really nice inside - a classic pub. Lots of wood, a bit dark. We liked it. Service was fine on this pretty quiet afternoon. We ordered a glass of white wine and a pint. Salmon Sashimi and half-a dozen of Oysters with. Wine and beer were nice and cold. The Salmon Sashimi was ok. Fresh enough. The let-down were the oysters. Didn't taste that fresh and quality-wise not on top. We've been quite spoiled in Scotland and Ireland. We had some really fantastic oysters there. So after that, these here just couldn't compete. Didn't give us and problems (like stomach ache), but we just expected a bit more from the taste and quality. It's a fine place to have a pint to rest your legs a bit. But I'd leave it at the drinks and eat somewhere else.

An independent pub on Portobello Road? A B&B style room for £74? The best margarita and nachos this side of the pond? An extensive tequila list? An indoor tropical paradise? Mulled wine? Attractive bar staff? An owner with charisma that would make Obama jealous? A loo that has been loved by the likes of William Jefferson Clinton? Free wi-fi? I'm just not sure what's not to love about this local gem. (Maybe that I don't live next door. Or upstairs on the roof terrace, for that matter.) I'd say that this pub on Portobello is a *must stop* full stop. Then I'd say it three times fast, because Portobello Gold is the epitome of a 5-star establishment in my book. No pomp and circumstance, just a low key local with fair prices, just enough camp to be cute, and a family feel. What's not to love?

Came in with my husband one afternoon because word on the street was they had oysters in the pub. Indeed they do -- I ended up ordering the salmon sashimi and a half dozen oysters (I was dying for something actually fresh by this point in our trip). The food was really good (and you can get the oysters served in one of three styles) so I was happy with that. I was concerned about ordering raw items in a place like this (I'll explain more in a minute) but it turned out ok. We also ordered a cheese plate to share which was good as well. I do have some issues though! First, the place is downright filthy. I was excited at the prospect of sitting in the "hippie deck" in the conservatory room but when we came in and I saw how gross it was (upholstery stained, crumbs and smears all over the table) I passed on that. The circular booth just below it was even worse -- the cushions were so stained and coated with grime, it looked like the Exxon Valdez had dumped its load in there. WTF! I almost wanted to leave at that point because really, food is served here? Gahh! The floors look like they haven't been cleaned in years, there's grime caked into the corners of the walls, and the bathroom is really icky. Also, our server was incredibly slow and pretty much forgot about us. It wasn't a busy afternoon either; we were one of maybe 4 tables in the whole place. Good food, pretty good beer, but man....this place needs a douche!!!!

Cheap and cheerful, with emphasis on the latter. I loved the covered back room and the plants, I liked the visit by the pub dog, and i loved the food. They served Leffe too. Mmmmmmm.. The room was TINY though, with a wall on 3 sides of the bed, and little other space. The toilet was reached by walking through the shower. Not a wet room, just a cheat on the space. I bet it would be a fun place to stay on the weekend.

A lovely Sunday afternoon pub, the old style front bar in traditional wood is a small space where you can find comfy little booths and nooks and crannies to sup a pint. This area leads to a 'garden house' at the back of the bar filled with plants and palms that makes up the dining area. I haven't eaten in here but I will do, as the place looks very tempting and I hear their roasts are topnotch. They have regular music evenings, and look out for their Sunday evening sessions with a good mix of musicians and styles.

Visited there in late July with friends. We had a late lunch and long visit and rested our feet. Waiter was great, food was delicious.

We specifically came to try fish and chips, so we were lucky that The Mall Tavern was nearby. Each of us ordered fish and chips, and all of our plates were left nearly empty. My goodness, I have never had better fish and chips than here at The Mall Tavern. The fish was crispy, and the chips were perfectly salted to taste. I appreciate that chips in England are more like potato wedges than classic American french fries. Way less fried and way less salty, so you can enjoy the actual taste of the potatoes! I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese that we all shared. I don't know what kind of cheese(s) was used, but it was the perfect starter to our meal. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding for the first time. It was hard not to order another one!! We came in for late lunch, so the restaurant was empty. I assume they are much busier at lunch and dinner time. I also enjoyed the selection of beer while we waited for our food to come out. Next time I'm in London, I'm returning here immediately.

One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics.

Yes, there are many pubs in London, everyone has their favorite, everyone has their local, and my "local" depends on where I am staying. In any case, several of us met here. The place was definitely hopping but one of our group arrived early and grabbed a table. We all ordered drinks, I had beer which was delicious. After perusing the menu, I ordered the standard- Fish & Chips, with Mushy Peas. It came out quickly and was fried to perfection. Everybody else who ordered food seemed happy with their choices. It was a great setting to meet up with friends, and I will happily come back here when in the area. A solid pub in a city of many pubs!
