I love going here whenever I'm in Fairfax. It's the place to go after a hike to the lakes, Cataract, or Point Reyes. They have communal tables, which are so great to accommodate larger groups of people but could intimidate shy people on a busy weekend. There's also some outside seating. I love everything about this place. I do wish they sold bottles or cans of beer, but fine...that's my only gripe because picking up to go orders would be more fun with German beer. We ordered brats which are flown in from Wisconsin and a polish and a vegan brat. They came with sauerkraut. We got little to go containers to fill with a few different mustards. I ordered pickles and cole slaw. We also had the German potato salad served warm. They're fun there and service is excellent. When near downtown Fairfax, this is a must! Such a cool dive bar in the heart of Fairfax, with a total Fairfax locals vibe. Plenty of anti tr*mp flyers and stickers. Servers are very chill, friendly, and quick with our food and drinks. Great beer selection and a very tasty hot pastrami sandwich in a no frills gastropub. Bread was perfectly toasted with nice layers of pastrami. Seating can be tight and limited. However, just come by at non peak hours or sit outside on a nice day. This place would surely benefit by building a more wind-protected outdoor seating area. read more

I'd gone there several times, for beer and sausage sandwiches. They play sports on their TV screen. Today I hoped to watched the Chiefs/Eagles game. I ordered a beer, $8. After I got it and paid asking to put on the Chiefs/Eagles they insisted we watch baseball, which no one was watching. The place was 2/3 empty.. so I left without finishing my beer. I later went to another bar, with lots of TV sets, a great waitress who cared about helping me serving me a delicious burger dish with the salad of my choice and a beer. She was EXCELLENT, unlike The Gestalt Haus who cared about the customer as much as McDonalds workers or less. I had a delicious meal, including a salad and a beer for $19 elsewhere. The Gestalt Haus has no caring about customers whatsoever. I live in Fairfax and I will NEVER go there again. read more

Came after a Family hike at Deer Park. Husband had vegan dog as usual and 13-year-old had Italian sausage on a pretzel bun. The soup was devine and they devoured their sausages. My son had a root beer from Wisconsin that was made with honey, husband had a Pilsner, as usual, and he surprised me with a delicious nectarine cider. We have been going here for 10 years usually after a hike or just walking down from San Anselmo Hills. Always fun, loud up the music and boisterous conversation. I'd give Gestalt 6 Stars. I once waited an hour and a half for my smoked bratwurst and I didn't even mind. They have the best draft beer selection, the owner is hilarious. I love the fact that they make cycling so worth putting all the Lycra, spending thousands on carbon wheels, ceramic bearings in your pedal splines and a SRM power meter that never reads out above 200 for the 3s w.a. Wait, this is a review about the best deli pickles West of the Hudson River. I always get the Smoked Brat, the chicken lemon is super good, and I LOVE their Ruben, it's HUGE and my friend Kim can never finish it so I always get the other half! I even enjoy the park-let take over that has now occurred and allows cyclist to disperse while we enjoy our delicious west coast Hazy Mo'Pulp IPAs. The mustard bar is a gem, there may be only "one" ketchup in the world, but as Malcolm Gladwell identified in What The Dog Saw, there are over 50 mustards in most super markets and I appreciate that Gestalt doesn't mustard shame me into only eating French's Yellow. Salute Gestalt! I've biked there solely from San Francisco to feel actual summer and sunshine on my pale white skin while the hot brat works its magic on my depleted brain. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to check out this awesome place. My friend and I stopped in after a long, wet hike and were lucky to snag the last two seats at a small table by the window. They have a large, well curated selection of beer with something for everyone, and lots of unique IPAs. I am a Fieldworks fanatic and was thrilled to find one on the menu. The food options are fairly limited and include everything from sausages, to sandwiches to chili and a few salads, that are more side dishes (e.g. not green). They offer ample bike parking inside and there were lots of wet and muddy mountain bikers rolling their bikes in while we were there. This is totally the place to go if you ride a street bicycle. There were so many bikes hanging up people almost didn't know where else to put them! We went a few days ago when it was HOT outside. They tried to keep the doors closed, but people kept coming in and out with their bikes and didn't shut the door behind themselves. They don't really come around to take your food order so be prepared to fight people at the bar. Anyway, I got the "French dip" which was alright. Their slaw was really good, which I usually hate! They do have a good selection of beers on tap, but I couldn't partake as we were on our street motorcycles. I got the kombucha, which was delicious. Overall, I'm not sure I would come back during a busy time. It was crowded, hot, and not very guest friendly. The woman screaming out food orders when they were ready had the most piercing voice. I feel like there should be a server so we could all avoid that and not have to worry about the full bar of other patrons. Also, it was pretty dirty. Here's the food deets: * Almost everything on the menu is $5. * Almost everything on the menu is a brat, a sausage or some variation thereof (Louisiana Hot Link, Cajun Andouille, Vegan Sausages, Chipotle, Chicken Apple... and the list goes on and on). * All sausages are served on toasted buns with or without sauerkraut * You self-top with onions, peppers, relish, and a slew of different types of mustard, catsup, and hot sauce * Also offered: cole slaw or potato salad ($4, meh), giant brownies ($3), big hot pretzels ($1), and pickles. Here's the beer deets: * $5 per 1/2 pint and they have a ton of unique beers (including one with 10+% alcohol) * $9 for a full pint in a stein that'll make you think you're at an Oktoberfest Biergarten. And here's the rest of the deets: * Serving until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays * Long, communal picnic tables or a stool at the counter... ultra casual * Lots of board games to grab and play * A movie night for kids once weekly * No tax (shhh...) Lots of excellent biers on tap. Great wursts for very inexpensive prices. All the trimmings. Self help needed. Communal tables, tight Marin biker attire is highly recommended but not mandatory. Perfectly tasty German potato salad. Really amazing slaw. Good place to catch a game but it does get super loud. I imagine running for a few hours. Stop by and get a good wurst with all the trimmings, and drink a pint of bier. Alas, I only hiked for two hours and that's not enough of a justification for a full sausage. Thankfully it's perfect to share one with your partner in crime, and then go for the sneaky maneuverer of inhaling all the slaws when he's distracted by the game on TV. Biker bar! Mountain bikes that is! You can even brink your bike into the bar and hang it on the wall! LOL! Insane choice of micro brews! The food is reallly good.
