Great outdoor dining in Mill Valley! They have outdoor heaters and retractable rooftops, so it's perfect on a sunny or even rainy day! Ambiance: casual Service: attentive and nice! Food: Everything was so good!! Steelhead salmon tostada with veggies- not too sure why I thought it would be poke style salmon! It's fully cooked salmon, super flavorful with the veggies Grilled cheese with burrata!!! - never had a burrata grilled cheese so this was up there. Very cheesy and delicious. Nola burger - bun was soft, meat was cooked to medium rare, loved the sauce it came with and crispy shallots. Also the fries were perfection! Little gem salad with anchovy - had to get some greens in my meal. Can't go wrong with this! Baked eggs in purgatory spicy tomato sauce with chickpeas- classic brunch item! Dessert: Mixed berry with cream cheese gelato was heavenly! Fruits complimented the cream cheese gelato. So delish!! They also have a great cocktail selection! read more

A good friend told us this place was "meh" but since we were seeing a show at Sweetwater, figured how meh could it be? Turns out meh would be a gold standard. From misplaced orders and flavorless fried chicken to having to chase our server down three different times, we almost were late for the concert! More like shock and why. read more

We had tickets to a show next door at Sweetwater Music Hall and decided to try Rock & Rye for dinner before the show. Because we have had good experiences at the music hall, we had high expectations for the restaurant. We were seated immediately on the outside patio under a nice warm heater. Drink orders and food orders were taken in quick succession. I had just begun to enjoy my drink when the food arrived. Rock Cod Fish and Chips were average at best. The fries (chips) were undercooked (limp) and completely failed the Good-When-Cold Test. I expected it to be Marin County Expensive. It did not disappoint, $98 for dinner for two. On the positive side my bourbon and seven was very good and the service was excellent. Unfortunately, that was not enough to make me want to return. read more

Modern but casual eatery that's part of the new and beautiful Sweetwater Music Hall. Pros: Moderate prices (for Mill Valley). Great selection of booze and our craft cocktails were on point. Tasty appetizers (polenta sticks!). Enjoyed the New Orleans-inspired theme. Friendly service, if somewhat erratic timing. Locals vibe and an airy new indoor-outdoor space with great heaters. Cons: We thought the menu was overly ambitious. It could be cut in half and really focused in on a few great dishes instead of many good-ish items. We dropped in for a four-person meal one cold Tuesday evening. Given the reviews, we weren't sure what to expect. I'm a foodie that loves everything from an In-and-Out double double to a Michelin three star in Paris so I'm definitely on the irritatingly finicky side.... First, the staff was warm and welcoming, attentive but not hovering, which we appreciated. The build-out was superb: if you've been to Sweetwater it'll blow your mind what they've created. We found the mixed drinks (vodka Tipitini and special Margaritas) to be really tasty. Wine list had some great wines by the glass (the albarino was a nice expression of that tricky grape. Food was perfect for the evening. Not too fussy, well constructed, and the sides were yummy. Kudos for the blistered shishito peppers! I'm not a dessert guy but the table liked their bread pudding. So disappointed that, even arriving at 6pm for dinner and an 8pm show, we didn't get priority seating, as we were told. The menu states, "skip the line and have your server check you in". But our server said he didn't do that. He said, "When the door opens, at 7, run in and save your seats, then return to finish your dinner. " We did that, but when we went to the show, someone had moved all our clothing and the Sweetwater staff said that saving seats is not allowed. Sweetwater clearly doesn't want you to eat at their restaurant, Rock and Rye. read more

Update: we dined here last night again now that they've been open a few weeks. The setting is lovely, great outdoor space, and the service is definitely friendly (if not a tad imprecise, but in a lovable way). The cocktails were...okay. I think they're trying to be a bit ambitious, and I respect it, but between The Greek and the Great American Melon Ball there was a bit to be desired. Now on to the food. The flavors are there, full bodied, satisfying and savory. The presentation is just okay. Our Caesar was a little too much limp lettuce, and not enough crunch (or enough total salad) but the croutons, dressing and fresh cheese were great. Overall I'd say we'll absolutely be back, and we enjoyed our meal, but it's not going to be our number 1 choice. read more

I am a live music junkie. Have enjoyed venues all over the country. Caveat: the hostess last night was fabulous and on it. Norene? Sharing the below, so others know what they're getting themselves into. The prices this place charges for their very small portions (and bad service both by waitstaff and the even worse bartenders in the main venue) are gratuitous. Obnoxious. - Our waiter was noticeably high on crank. Ignoring us as we tried many times to get his attention then couldn't stop asking us if we wanted anything else, returning to the table 10 times within 10 minutes! (we asked if he needed us to leave and he said no you can stay as long as you want so it wasn't an issue about freeing up table space.) His constant twitching made us all on edge. - their menu is seasonable and usually decent but the prices they charge? Ridiculous. I received what amounted to about a cup and a half of a white bean stew and they charged $20 for it. I didn't think much of it until my friends both looked at the check and saw what I paid and were in disbelief having seen the portion size. - I paid $15 for a glass of Ridge Zinfandel. It was not rich Zinfandel. I know Ridge Zinfandel and have been drinking it for over 30 years. The portion side was about 4 oz in a small wine glass. - They're brussels sprouts are smothered in a sweet black bean sauce. Half of them were cold. I told him I cranked out waiter and he just shrugged. I should've asked him to return them. Go elsewhere!! there are so many lovely restaurants that want your business and serve delicious reasonably priced food in Mill Valley. Go to the Sweetwater for music but don't give this restaurant your business until they change their practices and their chef. read more

Two sides to this coin. The bartender is magical, great beers, service from our waiter was fantastic. The music is always fun, and it's a joy having this kind of venue so close to home. I'm torn between giving this place a 2 and a 3. I'm giving it a 3 in acknowledgement of the fact that it has only been (re)open for a few weeks, so maybe they are working out some kinks still. And the location is neat. We managed to make a reservation on Resy because we weren't sure how busy it would be, but the actual restaurant website was not functioning yet (new?) and the phone was busy all day (I didn't even know that could happen anymore). When we arrived, it was not that busy and we were seated right away by a friendly if slightly odd hostess. She gave us the choice of inside or outside and we chose their expansive outdoor patio versus the tiny (yet charming) indoor cafe area. We were served water promptly and our waitress was friendly. However, no one on staff seemed knowledgeable about the menu. When we tried to confirm if the "Steak Frites" was the usual "steak and fries", the waitress had to ask another manager-looking type person. They were both nice, but it just seemed like a simple thing staff should know. They were kind enough to confirm the tomato soup was gluten free, so we ordered that and the blistered shishito peppers. Both were tasty. Not mind-blowing, but good. We also ordered drinks - hubby got a beer, I got their fancy margarita. It had this long description of jalapeño-infused blah blah blah, reposado tequila and mezcal, with a spicy salted rim, etc. It tasted like watered down lime juice with tequila in it. Nothing special at all. I didn't even finish it, which is unusual for me because ordered a fancy drink is a special treat. For dinner, my husband got the gumbo because it was raves about in a previous Yelp review during the soft opening. He said it was good but nothing special. I ordered their NOLA burger without the bun (gluten free) and it was fine. The butter lettuce they added for me was fresh and a good wrap for my burger. It was supposed to come with a "green onion dressing". I didn't see anything like that when my burger arrived so we asked about it. The staff was unsure of what it looked like so had to check to see if I got it. Then they brought me some on the side. Kind of strange. It was an ok condiment, not my favorite. The patty itself was small but well-cooked. The fries were very standard. I skipped the mushrooms. They had some fun desserts listed, but we opted to skip it. We didn't want to be further disappointed. Overall, we did not love our culinary experience here. But it has potential, so maybe as the staff and chef settle in, it'll improve. read more

Went there for the first time for lunch. Casual outdoor seating. Heat lamps. Overhead roof can be closed as necessary. Service = A+ Food = A+ Menu choices = A+ Complaints = none Our food was beautifully presented and VERY flavorful and delicious. We had a hard time choosing from the very creative, interesting menu. We dined on roasted cauliflower, pork quesadillas, and chowder -- all terrific. Check out the menu before you go.....it will save you time trying to decide! We will definitely return. The Restaurant at the Sweetwater just opened so we thought we would give it a try. It's called "The Rock & Rye" and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was renovated with a trendy flair (green booths and a ceiling with open retractable roof and beautiful surroundings.. From the moment we were seated, we were patting ourselves on the back for deciding to dine here. The service, the drinks and the food were all superb. We started off w/ a Ahi Tuna Appetizer followed with Gumbo and Steak Frites as our main entrees. We had such a great time and can't wait to go back. If you are going to a show there (the music venue is re-opening on September 3), I would highly recommend having dinner  before. If you want to just make a nice evening out of it with just eating, that is enough on it's own. read more

We were very impressed with most of the food from the incredibly delicious deviled eggs and a beef thing (can't access menu online since it changes regularly) to the seafood stew and chicken cutlet ALL SO GOOD and prepared perfectly. Once the food came, it was a 4/10... not great. Overpriced for sure. The wait was so long. I don't think I'd give another chance. Went for the first time last night. We found the food sadly mediocre and found ourselves nostalgic for the excellent food we had with the prior owner and chef. The gumbo was muddy in color and taste, the heirloom tomato and "ricotta cottage cheese" was just tomatoes and cottage cheese. The ceviche was okay, but lackluster and didn't come with crackers. It's a fine place as a bar and music venue, but eat dinner elsewhere before coming here. read more
