Everything in the many, huge 'Bargain Bins' is just $1 each. The available merchandise constantly changes every week. If you like 'treasure hunting', this place satisfies that urge. Here's a well known secret that keeps customers coming back over and over again. If you're there on Wednesday, during the 'Magic Hour(s)', which is usually announced sometime after 12 noon to approx. 1 pm, a "Fill-er Up Special" begins. The special promo ends when they say so and the store often closes early (time varies and it could be as soon as 2 pm-ish). Tall kitchen-sized trash bags (approx. 13 gallon size) are dispensed (for 10 cents each, which is paid for during check-out to the cashier). You'd be surprised how much a single trash bag can hold. And, you're not limited to just one bag. I took pictures of my bargain haul on 5-20-26 and laid them out in an organized manner for you to see.

Now at Last Chance, it's been transformed into more of a giant warehouse of random things. Gone is the fresh paint and shiny gym mirrors and instead it's replaced with tables filled with random stuff. It is more like a giant garage sale and the whole place had a noticeable odor. The prices vary but start at a dollar. This place is big with 10 aisles or so. The shelves are packed neatly and organized. They even sell basmati rice, something I haven't seen. They sell plants, balloons, instant noodles, toilet paper, face masks, etc. The owners are really friends and will spark up a conversation the minute you enter. Thus she can stop into any close Goodwill location, donate, and then stop into the adjoining thrift retail store to do a little shopping. There is a QR code to scan, to automatically generate a tax receipt for the donation. Unfortunately, the first step of creating an account via an email never worked, so gave up to try again later. Nevertheless, it was a good stop, where she bought a dress for herself and one for her mom. The store was well staffed with helpful associates. I politely asked her and she told me to pay first. So I got confused. As I was checking out, I paid, and then she gave me the receipt. I figured it would show me on the receipt or at least she would show me where to look or would have told me if I had any. My whole point was to check if I had any prior to paying so I can use it. When I asked again, she got annoyed and told me "you need to put in your information to check" with an attitude. She never showed me where to punch in my info, or even bothered to guide me. There were easily 20+ people waiting in line that turned into a crowd of people and there was only one register open with at least 2 other employees both on the floor and both visibly nearby. Multiple customers sighed, eyes rolled and a couple even commented "Hello?" and "um, open another register..?" It took him well over 10+ minutes but he finally picked up the telephone intercom and called for rescue help to come open up a 2nd register and they finally did when an extremely morbidly obese bald guy employee immediately gave me some attitude, instead of saying "hello" or "sorry for the wait" he snapped "geez, can't you wait?!" What? We were all waiting 10+ minutes, then he said " you were not next in line" he was mistaken so I told him "no, actually I was next in line" (I don't cut lines) and how would he even know? He didn't see me standing in line amongst the crowd, he was looking nervously waiting on deck in the corner folding party balloons and waiting for the call to step up to the plate (pun intended...) and to be fair I did not wait for him to say "next in line" and I just put my 5 items on the belt, so "my bad" sorry not sorry, he then said "if you don't like waiting, there's the door". The quality of the merchandise is good, but "Five Below" by design was as flawed in their original moniker by branding it as a "$5 or less priced items" implied business model that got outdated by inflation and time, much as what happened with the "$0.99 Cents Only Stores" who went out of business as well as the "Dollar Tree", both of whom, much as with Five Below, have merchandise at higher prices. Good merchandise over $5, but I'd think the corporate headquarters would rebrand with a name change so smarky customers don't bother the employees at the store with the conflicting name to the price tags :) or even have a frivolous lawsuit in the future for false advertising. I say that in partial jest 'tho. There's still a majority of items in that $5 price point with a few at $6 that looks like they could/should be $5 and a lot at the $10 range that clearly are worth more than $5. The selection of candies, snacks, toys, games, clothing, accessories, school supplies, knick-knacks and novelties as well as party favors and seasonal decor is good. This location may have challenges with the parking lot it shares with popular retailers, but it's a safe and convenient Beach Cities area that services Redondo, Manhattan and Hermosa in the South Bay.
