    ghenet combo

Food: The portions were quite large, and they provide as much injera as needed, so we probably should have gotten a combo for 2-3 people to serve a party of 4. The food was pretty good but a little lackluster. Service: the restaurant felt kinda empty, and it was still tricky to get our server's attention. Pricing: this ended up costing ~$35 per person

Doro Wett, Mesir Wett, and Atkelt Wett with plentiful Injera

Please bare with me after an 18 day absence, this is the perfect way to break the blank, eating a cuisine I have never tried before. All the Simpsons' episodes, and all the conversation in the world could not prepare me for what I was about to eat. There is a reason Ethiopian cuisine is an unworldly cuisine, and I was about to get a front row seat as to why that is. When I first walked in, I saw them issue me to a brunch menu. Slightly disappointed, I asked them about their dinner menu and requesting I try their Doro Watt (chicken) stew combination. It comes with two other vegetarian stews of my choosing, They obliged, if I were willing to wait a little longer for it. I was fine with that. Along with the Doro Wett, I got the Atkilt Wett, which contains potatoes, carrots, and cabbage, along with the Misir Wett, a spicy lentil stew. It all comes with a plentiful amount of Injera, an Ethiopian flatbread you use to pick up the food and eat it with. There are no utensils in Ethiopian cuisine. To my surprise, the food comes out fast, and it looks beautiful and is very hot, both in flavor and in texture. It also tastes absolutely amazing. Imagine your tastebuds waking up for the first time. That is how this feels with every single bite you take of this food. Excellent flavors, excellent textures, and the Injera is the perfect tool to make this work exceptionally well. The spice level is perfect, but if you have trouble with spice, then perhaps this is not the cuisine for you. If you run out of Injera, just ask for more. They will give it to you at no additional cost. I do feel this is a cuisine best for sharing. I tried my best to power through and finish this all myself, but the bread is just too powerful. It is like a sour pancake, but it will expand your stomach faster than Wonka's Everlasting Gobstopper. Other than that, partake generously in all the amazing and aromatic flavors and enjoy. As it is only a short walk from the Union St subway station, you can certainly afford to make this worthwhile experience several times over, that is if your stomach and your tastebuds acquiesce to this life altering and unworldly cuisine.

The Ghenet combination for 4 was absolutely delicious. You get 2 veg, one specialty main for each portion. So a total of (don't fret I did the math for you) 12 dishes to try. In an attempt to not spoil too much of the experience I'll keep it brief: Best eaten with your hands, get in there. Best eaten with friends who will also eat with their hands. Okay but they also provide forks. Try the honey wine, on the sweet side hence the name but I enjoyed trying it ($12 a glass) Some stews are spicer than others, this turned into a game for my non spicy friend. The special, because shared in a single platter, can be a bit intimate. I really enjoyed the service and experience here. I hope they add desserts that are more unique to the Ethiopian region. Would be Interested to experience.

This is my absolute favorite Ethiopian restaurant. It was one of the first I visited. I've tried several since and nothing compares. The front area near the bar has ten or so tables and there is more seating in the back. They don't take reservations, but it is usually quiet with no wait to be seated. Pretty much all of the vegetarian stews are amazing. Particularly noteworthy are the engoudaye tibs. I haven't found this dish at other Ethiopian restaurants and it's delicious. The mushrooms are tender and plump and complemented perfectly with the savory sauce. The shiro wett (spicy beans), atkilt wett (cabbage, potatoes, and carrots), and yedubba wett (butternut squash) are also top choices. The combination platters come with unlimited injera which is a squishy, slightly sour bread. It is customary to eat everything with your hands. The food is super filling. The restaurant is just a 10 minute walk from the Barclays Center so I always make a point to visit whenever I'm going to an event there.

This place was phenomenal! To clear up the menu on the combinations when they say pick two veggies and one meat stew it increases as you add people so for us with four people we got to pick six vegetables and four meat stews.

So first of all, love that they have veggie options for us vegans and plant-based eaters. However, maybe it's just me, but I wasn't feelin it. The majority of the vegetarian dishes were puréed and just reminded me of spiced-baby food. A couple of the textures were slimy even. The bread was so sour and triggered by tyropophobia so much, I had to flip it upside down and look away in order to eat it. The potato dish and the collard greens were good. I wish I had gotten a full bowl of that. But I'd pass on every thing else. They didn't do anything wrong per se it's just not for me.

Love love love this place to bits. I came here with my boyfriend 2019 Valentines Day and they were PACKED. We came back in 2022 to support them since we love them so much and was so sad that there were almost no customers when we walked in. I really hope that they get busier now that restrictions are lifting and we are entering a tentative post-pandemic world. Anyway, you can really get anything on the menu and you would not be disappointed. Literally just point to anything and I guarantee you it will taste fantastic. Highly recommend the lentils and 100% please get the tiramisu at the end. Boyfriend and I were practically licking the plate when we finished our meal, not a speck wasted.

I can count the number of Ethiopian restaurants I've eaten at on one hand, but Ghenet is my favorite one so far. I dined here a couple of times pre-COVID and again last fall, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all my meals and experiences. The doro wett is my go-to order. I never quite remember which veggie options I end up choosing, but I tend to enjoy most of them aside from (I think) the shiro wett. The gomen and engoudaye tibs are especially tasty. I used to love getting the meat and veggie combo platter, but during this past year they haven't had this option. When my friend and I went, we got one order of the doro wett and split a vegan combination platter. It'll cost a bit, but it yields so much food. If you have any self control (I did not) I'd recommend eating half and saving the rest for another meal. You also get unlimited injera, which I remember disliking the first time I tried it, but have really grown to enjoy now. Already looking forward to my next visit!

Very good food and good service in a simple dining room. Wine by the glass, kategna appetizer and a Ghenet combination platter of a stew and 2 vegetables was a delicious satisfying meal with leftovers to take home.

what arrived in our delivery. note that there is no injera
    Liz K.

I've been a long time customer of Ghenet. The food is okay but the delivery is absolute garbage. Today we received an order with two combination platters, but no injera was included. When I called Ghenet to address this, the manager told me that we had stolen the injera and said he had checked the security footage. WHY WOULD WE DO THIS?!? I don't expect perfect service, but I don't expect to be treated like a criminal when trying to eat dinner.

Combination 3, all three stews and five vegetarian dishes
    Yelena C.

The place is not that big but when it gets busy the service can be a bit slow. The prices are very reasonable. All of the stews were delicious with a lot of flavor. The spicy bean dish was excellent and the butternut squash was very good. I would not recommend the lentil dish (misir wett) and the cabbage dish (atkilt wett). Overall authentic food and nice atmosphere.

Unfortunately that meant the bread got the microwave treatment instead of proper defrosting and toasting. If you've ever tried microwaved frozen bread, you know the texture I'm describing. The crispy honey bean (akara) burger itself was quite tasty. The patty had a crispy exterior and creamy bean paste interior, dressed up with vegan cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It's a nice alternative for vegetarians who dislike fake meat substitutes. They don't purport the beans taste like anything but beans. The jollof rice completed the meal. It had a rich tomato base with great depth of flavor that made everything feel more substantial. The owner was genuinely sweet about the whole rushed situation, and based on reviews, I know this is the kind of place that shines under normal circumstances. This is primarily a takeout spot with a few high-top tables by the window if you want to eat in. I'd definitely give it another shot during regular operating hours when they're not scrambling to accommodate early birds.

We'd never had Nigerian food but were game to try. We took a bus to a decidedly unglamorous part of town, to a humble storefront with a couple of small outdoor tables. Inside was very small, with just some bar seating by the window and a bench. We were a bit early for the lunch rush, so had the place to ourselves. The nice owner came out to greet us and take our order. The hubby ordered the Classic Akara Burger, which was their signature deep fried honey bean fritter patty on a bun with tomato, lettuce, cucumbers and vegan mayo. It was good but a bit bland. My Oyster Mushroom Wrap with bean fritter pieces and veggies had more zip, courtesy of their Nigerian red sauce, and was quite sizable--I really enjoyed it. It was a very hot day and they had no AC inside (just fans) so we opted to eat at one the outside tables, which turned out to be much cooler and quite pleasant. If you're vegan/vegetarian or just curious about what Nigerian flavors are like, I'd say it's very much worth a try.

We tried the beef empanadas and mushroom croquettes for apps, dibi senegal (grilled lamb chops with rice and plantains) and the mafe (peanut stew with beef)-- nothing was left on our plates at the end. The things that can be improved: - the service was quite chaotic- we had made this reservation days in advance and were seated and had already placed our order for appetizers (or so we thought) when the waiter regretted to inform us that we'd have to be moved to a different table. The table we were moved to was right in the middle of the restaurant but by the door and it felt like we were being bumped into all night - as it turns out, the waiter moved us but never did place our appetizer order. So we waited, and waited, and no food came. They even served a table who came in after us! We did find it super strange but figured maybe our food was taking longer? Anyway eventually the waiter realized what happened and came over to take our order for the apps and also our entree (as at this point we had been seated closer to 45 mins). He also offered us each a free drink "on the house" if we wanted as an apology for the wait. Two of the three of us took him up on the offer and ordered two mocktails. As it turns out, at the end of the night when we got the bill, both of these mocktails were added on to our bill, despite what we were told that they'd be "on the house" - my friend ordered a dish to go - which she wanted to take for her mom- and they forgot to add it to the bill or place the order so at the end of the night my friend had to leave empty handed and disappoint her mom who was very excited to try the dish. Overall: The food is phenomenal. The service can be significantly improved.

Since we've never had Senegalese food, the decision to go there was no brainer. The interior of the restaurant looked like an art gallery, with paintings, carvings, handicrafts and photos from Western Africa. An old man (the owner?) received us. He recommended several vegetarian options for me, but I already had my heart set on the Okra stew. He then asked if I wanted Okra Tofu? I asked him if people in Senegal consumed Tofu? He said no, but customers had requested it, so they put it on the menu. (Who comes to a Senegalese restaurant and asks for Tofu?) I told him to not give me anything outside an authentic Senegalese diet. A few minutes later he came out of the kitchen to tell me that there was not enough okra stew left to form a main dish, but he'd offer whatever was there as a free side dish for me. So I went with his suggestion of Mafe Legumes (vegetables stewed in peanut butter sauce), while husband asked for the Senegalese national dish of Tiebou Jeun (baked fish). For the accompanying starch, I chose Funio, the Western African staple grain (again introduced by this wise old man). We also ordered Nem Legumes - vegetable spring rolls (I'd call them samosas :-)). Husband asked for a ginger drink. The ginger drink tasted like pure ginger juice (sweetened a bit of course) - it would certainly cleanse one's palate and warm one's stomach. The Nem Legumes were nice, but the winner was the stewed tomato dipping sauce that came with them. Our main dishes were served on large dinner plates. The portions were so substantial that I ended up packing half of my stew home, after stuffing myself unusually full already. There were chunks of yam, carrots and cabbage on my plate, flavored in a creamy and well-seasoned peanut butter sauce. But the winner was still the Okra stew - spicy, tangy, tasty. I also stole some Joloff rice off my husband's plate. It was another surprisingly delicious treat! His fish looked like a portion of a big carp, with quite a bit of bones to pick out (we don't mind fish bones, having been well trained in certain Asian cuisines :-)) Our bill, presented by a young waitress, came in a little basked covered by the broad hem of an African lady in a beautiful dress. The old man passed out table and said "oh yes she collects for us." For a meal of one appetizer, two mains, and a drink, the price was super reasonable!
