I have been coming to the Giant at Westward for over 10 years, and I must say this was by far the absolute worse customer service experience I have ever had at ANY store. I went to the deli this last night (Sunday) around 5:30 and the lady at the counter, I think her name was LaShae, said they were closed. I thought this a bit odd as I know the new store closes the deli at 8pm now. Anyway I didn't want to make a scene so I didn't say anything and went about my shopping. Yet when I was leaving and heading towards the elevators I could clearly see that there was a gentleman clearly helping customers at the deli counter around 6:30pm. I was not aware Giant employees were permitted to tell customers their area was closed whenever they feel like not working. Me and my family will no longer shop at any Giant stores if this is the kind of customer service they think is acceptable. read more

This Giant location is clean, fresh and sort-og new, but figuring out where it is- a completely different story. I parked out on the street and had to ask someone where the store was. It turns out, I needed to climb three flights of steps to get into the place. I found out they also have an elevator. I guess the accessibility issue didn't stop many people because the store was pretty well filled with customers. I bought a container of fresh strawberries, a bushel of bananas that were well-proced, and half a dozen Florida oranges. I also bought three bottles of Synergy Strawberry Serenity juices. There were a few other things in terms of chicken breasts and ground turkey meat that I will cook with over the weekend. I didn't get a whole lot this time around, and I probably should have considering the amount of effort I put into getting here. This seems like a good grocery store and they even have a pharmacy. Went for the grand opening of the new location next to the old location, they have the Ledos Pizza Marketplace, Giving away samples , Ben's chili bowl was there giving away samples of Doritos scoops filled with Chile. There was no wait for vaccines with a streamliner camper Mobile clinic in front. When you take the elevators to the top The Starbucks and deli is right there. I took pictures of the huge OREO section, and all the different crab meat from India and Indonesia. It's a crime that lump crab from overseas goes for $55 a pound. Just Because the Chesapeake Bay prices have gone up the whole world should not take advantage. read more

This is the best Giant supermarket. It ranks among the best supermarkets, period. My wife concurs. We were in the area before the opened, and we shop here whenever we are in town (explanation below). Before any background, however, here is why this specific store is superlative, in a category of business that is not especially differentiated. It is big, with spacious aisles; it has selections that rival gourmet establishments; the prices are as expected. My wife found a version of our dog's favorite pet food she has difficulty locating; the GF options are extensive; the kosher section is similar to kosher shops I have been to. I saw fancy ice creams and alternatives. And it happens to be conveniently located for us -- but there are other options equidistant. We choose to come to this Giant. Unless they mess up something, I would believe we would continue to do so. Some other commentators have mentioned "internecine" disputes among cashiers, and bonus points for the impressive vocabulary, but we have witnessed none of that. We do not even reside in the metropolitan area. I happen to live in New York City, while my wife stays in San Francisco. The reason we are here is my elderly father, who is still on his own, and the remainder of my family, all of whom are slightly farther out into Montgomery County. We stay just south, in toward the District, from this Giant. This means I know groceries coast to coast (my wife and I both grew up in the Midwest, and we spend considerable time there as well). Whole Foods might -- but it would not be beyond doubt -- have somewhat more high end fare, with prices to match. Trader Joe's has quirky deals. But this Giant is all purpose. If we go to either of those others, that means another stop at a Giant anyway. I hope the return on investment has been good for the corporation, because this particular Giant should be a model. That is the thing: I would have thought the branches in the chain to be indistinguishable, and I would not have thought I'd post to this platform to praise a Giant. So perhaps I should take back that comment, and this Giant can be distinctive, meaning superior. One could quibble about the parking. The signage clearly indicates to go up to the third level. Once you know, there would not be confusion. The layout of the ramp, two-way, does result in an issue, not the fault of Giant, presumably. People do not respect the rules of right-of-way (if you are the one going straight, you take precedence over the person turning). Other than that, however, I look forward to visiting this Giant. May whoever made the decisions leading to its development receive a raise. read more

The "new" Giant at the NEW Westbard Center is fabulous. It does take some getting used to as regards parking. Quite different from the "old" Giant where you would park out front. The benefits of the new parking garage and access to the Giant include staying dry in all kinds of weather. Previously, umbrellas were needed and in ice and snow it could be somewhat dangerous. In addition, the store is enormous, immaculate and totally gourmet. For those of us who were used to the OLD Giant over many years, it takes some getting used to re: the Lay of the Land, ie, where everything is located, etc., etc. I have shopped at the NEW Giant many times and unlike others, have found the employees very helpful and pleasant. Many of the staff are familiar to me as they will be to others who shopped at the OLD Giant. I highly recommend this Giant. Give it a chance. Familiarize yourself with the parking garage and how to access the entrance from different parking levels. I predict it will be well worth it. read more

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SIGNAGE FROM PARKING GARAGE!!! I walked in circles for 15 minutes. The signs don't make any sense. No one is around to help. The poor signage continued inside, as it took forever to find a restroom. A trip to the grocery store for 3 items turned into a half hour of being lost. The best thing about the new Westbard Giant is the covered parking. The heat and cold or exposure to intense thunderstorm downpours in summertime used to be brutal in that massive exposed asphalt parking lot. Now if you're trying to get your steps in, you can park on the lowest floor and walk up 3 flights of stairs (or take the elevators), and be able to make a speedy exit on your way out without being exposed to the elements or having to drive up & around the garage. Looking forward to MoCo County Liquor store opening & trying Cafe Tatte & using the new Post Office. I wish bus service (Metrobus' T2, and RideOn's 23 & 29) ran more frequently for both employees and customers to get us out of our damn cars! read more

Aside from the parking garage, which I'm not a fan of, this new Giant (next to the old one) is a big improvement for the area. They have some great prepared food and baked goods. Their cheese selection is much better than you would expect. The store is brand new, so it's nice and clean with a logical layout. read more

Wait until the week before Thanksgiving when it takes 30 minutes to get out of the garage. The supermarket itself on the third floor has a doorway that is wide enough for one person at a time with a cart to get in or out and three elevators are right there. Overall, just a badly designed place. As for the supermarket itself, unless you are a fan of giant's prepared food, there's nothing new - same stuff in a new layout (done on purpose to drive impulse shopping). There also seem to be a lot of people standing around with nothing to do. Thank goodness for Trader Joe's. read more

I am a long-time Westbard Giant customer. The recent, vocal internecine checker warfare is driving me away. On three recent occasions, including today, checkers at two open lanes (lights on, no line) have yelled at my husband and myself "do not come in here" as we paused to enter their checkout lanes. The internal dispute appears to be that they believe that novice checkers further down the line are not working as hard as they are and customers should go there. Whatever the truth of that, this is just unacceptable treatment of customers that management needs to address. read more

I dread going here because of the attitude of the check out people. No smiles, no thank yous, just straight faced and handing you the slip. I've had maybe one good experience with a check out person. The rest have been terrible. The aisle people have been nice. But the fishmonger I encountered was pretty bad. Well stocked, good prices, but staff attitudes are soooo important. One of the reasons I like this Giant is because I always feel like they're earnestly trying to be better more often than not. Shelves are typically well stocked and the store is usually neat and tidy. Center aisle is always reserved for seasonal items (eg holidays or summer etc) and generally they have a broad selection of whatever you're looking for. read more

My next review awaits? Ok, Yelp. This is a Giant. My Giant. The Giant I've gone to since I was at least, say, 5 years old. We've been through a lot, and some years ago it received a redesign that was pretty nice. The store is pretty damn huge and chances are if you want something, you'll find it. Unless what you want is organic food. They simply don't have as big a selection as Whole Foods, and they also leave a lot to be desired in the grass-fed, humanely-raised meat department. I have no idea if grass-fed really does taste better (I don't have a super discerning palate) but it's nice to know that what I'm eating didn't suffer. Check-out usually isn't too bad, and they're open late. Not much else to say honestly. read more

This is a pretty standard suburban grocery store. Giant renovated the place a few years back, and it's pretty nice now. Lots of selection - and despite what some reviews have said, I have noticed a big increase in their organic items in the past year or so. They now have an entire aisle devoted to organic stuff, as well as things scattered through the store like salad and such. Still not as much as Whole Foods, but enough now that I can buy things there and cut down on my Whole Foods visits, which is nice b/c this store is so near my home. The self checkouts are great as well, only down side there is that sometimes they have no one on the human checkout lanes and sometimes the staff isn't very quick to help you out when the self-register breaks or runs out of paper or something. Oh, also like the hand scanners, and the fact that they have smaller shopping carts, which are nice for me since I only usually do one or two days shopping at a time. All and all, a quality supermarket for everyday use! read more

Despite not liking this Giant, I go every week for the things I can't get at Whole Foods or if I'm in a bind and need something while at the dry cleaners. Issues: 1. They over charge by a lot. A jar of Almond butter I get at Whole Foods is a full $2 cheaper than at Giant. Same brand. That's a big difference for one item and the list goes on... 2. Every time I buy produce, I regret it. Today, dry cleaner day, I stopped in with my grumpy baby and picked up blueberries. They appeared to be freshly stocked. I got home and had to throw 50% of the container out. Not only do I pay less at Whole Foods but nothing ever comes home rotten. What a waste of money! 3. Very little choice in organic options in produce and meats. A plus, the people who work there are generally helpful. The self scan guns are great. But for the same stuff I get at Whole Foods, my bill is always a third more. Sucks. read more

Okay, seriously, what is UP with the smell of this place? We walked in this morning and there was a stench lingering at the entrence of the store - like rotting garbage. There were boxes piled up near the checkout. The boxes were gone this evening and the smell was mostly gone, but going through the store, there would be an occasional stinky smell. Other than that, they seem to have the essentials, so that's decent enough, I guess. They have a crazy self-checkout option where you get to run around with a scanner. I live in DC but needed to pick up some last minute supplies for an event and decided to come here. Bad mistake. Store is rather dirty and compact, and as others have mentioned does not have enough supplies even for how small the place is. Employees are not particularly rude or disrespectful, but instead just unhelpful. I don't think they've had any sort of proper training or recruitment because none of them seemed to know exactly where requested supplies were, or if they had certain items in stock, and instead seemed to be operating in a very confused matter. The friendly attitude of the workers is what's keeping this review at 2 stars. The Giant by the Lebanese Taverna in downtown is much better equipped and clean, and not that much farther away, would not recommend this store unless you want to do some very light shopping with basic items. read more

Audited again today. Manager and check out clerk said it was random again. Unfortunately had to feed the kids so rescanned again. That's 3 times so far. What are the stats on Giant Self checkout profile targeting. Manager said call Giant owner but didn't know the number. As far as selection and availability goes, it's a Giant - pretty standard, no better, no worse than any other Giant I've been to. I'm happy with that. However, my issues with this particular location are as follows - 1) Checkout lines - there are always a TON of people in line and 2 or 3 checkout lanes actually in use. I'm not a fan of having to wait 15, 20 minutes in line sometimes. 2) Overcharging - I've gotten overcharged here for items 4 or 5 times, and it's getting a little ridiculous. Once the woman insisted that the eggplant I bought was a "baby Italian eggplant" and therefore cost twice as much as normal eggplants, to which I pointed out that I just came from the produce aisle and there isn't even a section of baby Italian eggplants. Given the long checkout lines, sometimes I've decided to just eat the extra cost (no pun intended) rather than holding everyone up so the cashier can go check it out, but that always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. 3) Someone bought me a gift card and ordered it so that I could pick it up in the store at this particular location. When I went to go pick it up, the cashier absolutely swore that I couldn't do this and told me that if I wanted a gift card, I had to buy one on the spot. I explained repeatedly that someone else had bought me a gift card and arranged for it to be picked up here - no luck. From Giant's own website: "Gift cards can be ordered online for delivery or in-store pick up." In other words, I'll come here for the few staples that I can't get elsewhere, but otherwise, I'm heading over to Rodman's, just a few blocks down the street. read more

At noon on Sunday - * No 1% milk * Limited selection of yogurt * No breakfast sausage * No rotisserie chickens * Limited selection of liquid laundry detergent Unfortunately one can't predict what will be missing on specific days. This is a continuing and increasing problem. Giant used to be the premier grocery store in the D.C. area, but ever since they were bought out Royal Ahold the store has been in decline. We started going to other stores for better quality foods, but continued going to Giant for basics because of it convenient location. Now we can't even depend that it will have the basics and will have to go elsewhere. read more

I am writing about Giant. Giant foods the Grocery store. Why would I write about Giant Grocery store? I am not sure. For some reason, I really like taking a shopping cart, and strolling through every single aisle. Just like the way I like writing on Yelp recently and posting pictures. It was way for me to complain bout bad dining experience initially, but now it's about what I think are things people might be interested in, and reading what others have to say. with that said... Let me write about this particular Giant. It's kinda hidden away from everything. But it's one o the bigger and better Giants around. Across the street from STRIKE BETHESDA. It is one o these so called Super G's. So what is great about this Giant??? The Pre-Made Sandwiches they sell... That is what... I go to Giant to pick up coffee stuff on the way to work. and for the last three years, I have been going to this specific one because it was so darn convinient... and every time I went there to get to the coffee aisle, I would pass the sandwich fridge section. And I noticed their sandwiches had a little sticker that said, 'proudly made with Boarshead provisions'... That perked my eyebrows... I like boarshead provisioning. decent deli stuff... So I decided to give it a try. I did Roast beef. But since they only had American Yellow cheese i stopped doing that. Roast beef is strictly with Swiss or any other white colored cheese... no way with yellow cheese... and then i did the Italian. then i was sold... for $5, you get a really meaty italian with provolone that is alll boarshead deli meat and (i assume cheese) and it was really good. helps to have a toaster oven to toast the bread and cheese and heat up the meat... but i am pretty sure it's good cold as well. And then i found out, that if you have a Giant Bonus card, every 6th purchase u make, u get a 7th FREE!!! and that 7th free counts towards your NEXT 6!!!! so i have been going to Giant for these sandwiches once or twice a week. I even have them for Breakfast.... yum.... I have been sticking to Strictly Italian for the sub hoagie version of their sandwiches.... BUT then recently, i have been doing the Panini's with boarshead provisioning... they are a $1 more at $5.99. but it has bigger and better bread, with better tasting sauce and more meat and cheese... DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.... highly... I get the Italian Panini (it has garlic butter mayo basted quite heavily so i throw away one of the bread and use one piece of bread only to eat the sandwich) and i also get Reuben (with corned beef, swiss, kraut no offense to people from deutchland) and dressing, and I do the Rachel (that is what i said) also... If you don't know what a Rachel is, it's the same thing as Reuben, EXCEPT it's with pastrami and coleslaw instead of corned beef and kraut. I take the bread, and toast them dressing side up on my toaster oven. about 2 - 3 minutes in, i put the cheese on them. and 1 minute later, i put the meat and the kraut.... 2 minutes later, a great breakfast or lunch or snack or even dinner sandwich.... i love it.... and the best thing is, i bought two this morning. one was free because of my coupon, and the second one i got a dollar off because if you buy two with your bonus card, you get a dollar off... YAY!!! 2 great sandwiches for $4.99. now, if you don't have a toaster oven, i don't know what you would do to heat them up. but for me... this is one of my favorite sandwich options.... try it out for urself!!! read more

I am amazed at the amount of reviews about this Giant, as when I lived just across the border in DC, nobody seemed to know the place was there. However, I am not surprised by the rating. As suburban grocery stores go, this Giant is above average. I always found exactly what I needed at reasonable price (i.e., better than what I found in the city or in downtown Bethesda). Because it was organized well, I rarely interacted with the staff, there was no need to. There was rarely even a wait at the checkouts. Now with the scan as you go readers at Giant, my most recent experience there was even better (after a few years living out of town). If you live in Upper NW DC, this is where you need to do your shopping. read more

Super clean, well stocked and plenty of open cash register staff. Found my tea with ease; it was on sale if using the Giant store card. Also found some new sparkling water type drinks-Sparking Ice: a Giant special 10 bottles for $10. Will certainly be back for my next food needs. read more
