The produce section is soooo nasty. Rotten fruit and veggies everywhere. I was in a rush one day and bought tomatoes without really looking at them. My fridge started to stank. Finally figured out that one the tomatoes in the plastic carrier (on bottom side) was rotting. Trader Joes is a hike from where I live, but it's worth it. YeS! Organic market in the arts district is close too, but a lil too pricey for produce items. read more

This is one of the better grocery stores I've been to in the area. The lines are long and the parking lot is crowded but there are a lot of people in the area who all need to eat. The trick I've found is to park at the back of the lot (there's always spaces there and you don't have to worry about a cart hitting your car) and to just be patient with the lines. The cashiers are all very friendly, even during peak hours. The store is clean and the produce usually looks fresh (with the exception of the green onions, minus 1/2 star). The only other problem I've had with this store is that the dairy case had not been rotated one day so I had to dig to the back to get some non-expired yogurt (minus another 1/2 star). When I brought this to the attention of the customer help desk, they apoligized repeatedly and offered to replace anything I had previously bought from the dairy case that may have been expired. When I went back to the dairy aisle, there was someone there rotating the case. This shows to me that they listen to their customers. read more

The grocery at giant is of reasonable quality. They have a decent variety of organic products. They house most of the basic items people need on a daily basis. They have a salad bar too which is of 'ok' quality. However yesterday I got butter croissants from their bakery section and I'm not happy with the quality. I do not taste an ounce of butter in it and it's not properly baked. It's sort of undercooked and dry and weird. I sometimes get stuff from the Costco nearby and their croissants are amazing. Quality of stuff at giant is clearly not at par with Costco but if you don't have a Costco membership then giant is a better option than some other places in the area like shoppers on cherry hill road where they sell really awful stuff and rotten produce. read more

I admit that I have been going to this Hyattsville Maryland Giant grocery store since the summer of 2010 and partially the reason is because I'm able to easily stretch my grocery budget here and the employees calmly help whenever there is an issue with the self-checkout scanner. On my most recent visit I bought among the following items; jumbo eggs, breakfast sausages, Sargento Baby Swiss cheese, Sargento Tomato Basil Jack Cheese, Kellogs Smores Pop Tarts,Swiss Miss milk chocolate hot cocoa, Giant brand 4 cheese Mexican blend, Musselman's Honey Cinnamon Apple Sauce,Nestle Coffee Mate Chocolate Toffee Truffle coffee creamer (new flavor), bananas etc. read more

Decent store. It's a little too far from home for me. But if I'm in the area and need a few groceries, I would definitely stop here. Fresh produce, meat/seafoood is a must for me & this Giant provides that. They also have a wide selection. I needed to print out a pic & bring it back for a last minute cake order, after hours. The manager and bakery staff were really helpful in helping me get it done. Also they have a cashier name Susan who does her job perfectly :) Minus one star for the long waits at the deli. read more

Why I come here: - Super close to my house - Nom nom nom meat! Their meat selection and prices are actually quite good. Not like Shoppers where they force you to buy a family pack to get any discount and regular ground beef is still over $4/lb. - They carry a few modestly higher end products than Shoppers. I'm a grad student and on a budget, but every now and then I appreciate the opportunity to modestly splurge for occasions on things like De Cecco pasta or sherry vinegar. Why I'd rather not come here: - Produce selection is terrible (frequently out of things, really limited selection, and really wilted looking). Shoppers has more options and better things in stock. - Have not had great experience with some of the staff here. I've been yelled at for having to repeatedly ask for help at the deli counter (where multiple staff were having a long social conversation while I was standing and asking for assistance), given attitude at check out for no reason, and have been given responses to inquiries about products such as "it's over there [points in the distance]." - It's always crowded, the aisles get clogged with waiting people, and check out is not efficient. Even the self-checkout is horribly designed - a belt rolls your items away instead of having a place for you to bag as you go, and this forces you to hold up other people as you bag after you check out (they do not reliably have baggers). I personally don't mind if you start checking out while I am finishing up bagging (I appreciate that everyone's in a hurry), but this seems to go against the social norm because I've been yelled at for being disrespectful by doing that. Not to mention that self-checkout is a spiral of doom because the machine is always giving you errors and forces you to call for assistance 3+ times. read more

This store is generally a good store to shop at. But, sometimes there are things that irk you. Not only this store, but a lot of them are using the self checkout lines and less cashiers. I actually like them, but there are too many people getting the machines jammed and need assistance. This makes the process longer than working with a live cashier. Drives me crazy! Now besides that, how about the staff smoking outside the store? Mind you, they aren't at the front door, but at the far end of the.building. The sidewalk leads to the Metro, which is heavily traveled. I find this to be unpleasant having to walk through the smoke and its unattractive as well. Perhaps they could use the other side of the store which is less traveled? Anyway, this is not the air of freshness I expect when going into a food store. I have been a faithful customer of this Giant for about 18 months before relocating somewhere else, and it is high time that I give high marks to it. I have always enjoyed shopping there. It is clean, well-lit, spacious, affordable, and you can find quality products (although some produce and meat have been slightly disappointing at times). The bread they make, in particular, is really good. I loved the crunchy Italian bread they made but unfortunately they stopped making it. I have always seen staff be both friendly and professional. Less than a couple of hours ago, my mother in law graciously offered to buy groceries for my husband and I. Naturally, we both took her up on her offer and went for a late night grocery store run (we now have groceries to easily last us at least three weeks). We were able to easily find some spices, vegetable items (peas, carrots, mushrooms, spinach) and meats (tilapia, chicken, salmon, and ground beef).The cashier showed concern in ringing up our orders in a conscientious manner and showed reasonable concern for a question I had related to one of the store's discount programs. read more

I stop in this store only if I'm in the area; with the exception of a few older employees who came from the Giant Food in Riverdale years back, customer service could be much, much better. Produce section isn't all that great, never seems to be anyone at the seafood counter. Have to say the deli folks are nice, though. read more

The salad bar lacks the usual variety and very limited choices are available. I'm talking about the non-seasonal selections such as assorted fruit of mango, apple, grapes, kiwi, strawberry, artichokes, sea food salad, olives, etc. What is going on?
