This is probably the nicest Giant in DC: best selection and the biggest, most modern store. That said, the lines here are ridiculous.

I'm kind of torn. On the one hand, the employees of the pharmacy are incredibly nice. However, this pharmacy is not well stocked (and tiny compared to CVS or even local pharmacies), so unfortuantely they rarely carry the medicine I use and I always have to wait a few extra days for them to order it. ABOUT PEAPOD--READ ABOUT MY CHALLENGE I've ben using Peapod for a few years and it is has sunk to terrifyingly low depths of customer service and I just don't know why. They were always on time, the produce was borderline acceptable and it saved me lugging big cans and bottles into the house. It was worth the delivery fee and I always tipped. But... In DC at least, they don't hit their windows anymore. And they don't care. And they don't always call and let you know. Today I had the 8-10 am window for a large order. I stayed home to take care of it. They always hit the end, not the beginning of the window, but you can't count on it, so you need to be around. 10:00 rolls by and no Peapod. 45 minutes later I call. After 10 minutes on hold, the operator tells me that they had a battery problem on the truck (really?) and the dispatcher swears that he tried to call everyone. Hey, I was home. No call. It will be another hour and a half at least before my order shows up. And she's sorry. This effectively means that a 2 hour early window turns into a 6 hour most-of-the-day window for groceries?? I hate it when Comcast does it; no way I'm putting up with it from Peapod. So I tell them to cancel the order and I have a great suggestion. I challenge them that since the dispatcher was supposed to call and didn't, if he calls now and apologizes to me personally instead of indirectly through some Mumbai call center, I'll accept the apology and the order, shut up and be a docile customer. So think that I'm going to get the apology? read more

The location is great for me, but every single time I come here I have to wait forever in line. Last Sunday, I "kid" you not, every line was at least a 45 minute wait. The other thing is that there is zero parting to my knowledge. I don't mind so much battling DC traffic to actually get to the grocery store, but really the time spent in line every single time I come here is obscene. read more

Conveniently located if you can walk. The store itself is very unorganized I spent way too long in here trying to find everything on my list and I could not find siracha anywhere even though they had a Texas Pete brand knock off (so weird). Just OK. read more

I hadn't been in a while, because my last couple of experiences had been very poor. The staff had been very unattentive and unfriendly, making me feel unwanted, so I've been shopping elsewhere. But today I was there, and while they were out of stock on items I wanted, the staff were friendly and helpful. That makes a big difference. read more

Love this big, clean and well-lit grocery store! Lots of produce. FREE two-hour parking with validation. BE SURE to bring your parking ticket into the store with you; the people who run the garage are really picky about parking and often won't accept a stamped Giant receipt. Staff is sometimes very helpful and friendly; other times, they're downright rude. Prices are sometimes steep, but grab a weekly circular because their sale prices are competitive. read more

Has some gems: 1st 2 hours of garage parking is FREE. If you know how to shop well then you will find some good bargains.. I just happened to be there browsing when I found large packages of pork chops for 66 cents per pound. Limit was 2 packages. There were 12 chops in one of my packages and 14 in another! I found Crustezz pancake mix BYGO. HINT: Scan your own groceries not unless you enjoy people watching and/or hearing the local gosip. Happy Shopping! read more

Reasonably priced stuff. Usually well stocked. I would have given 4 or 5 stars if it was not for the freaking awful employees. Every single person is out right rude. You will see many of them standing outside the store in their yellow dress eating, smoking our just killing time. They are so many of them and yet never get carts in line. Lines are huge. I think the company that owns Giants (is based in Europe) lacks direct oversight of the employees and that will one day kill the store. I have switched to somewhat more expensive but way friendlier Whole Foods and Harris Teeter that are each about a mile from this store. read more

I had no idea Giant was on yelp. I would have wrote this review years ago. This is the worst Giant on the planet!!! I have never been to one thats as bad as this. I generously gave this store two stars only because of the convenient location and the cute pharmacist and his even cuter friend that comes to visit him from time to time. Every time I step foot in this place it is packed!!! Check out lines down the aisles...WTF!!! No matter what time day or night it is always ridiculously crowded and for some reason my dumb ass keeps going back there (it has to be the location). And the people that shop there.....don't get me started on these HARD looking people. I mean damn, they look like they are straight up out of a scene from "The Wire". Some of the cashiers need to be fired with their rude asses (why are all the rude people in customer service) and slow moving lines. Prices are very high, my advice take a moment to compare and contrast between this spot and target, which is just a few steps away. Plenty of diverse items but be wary of the perishable products. People complain about the service, and its always the case that the bad impressions stand out ... but I personally saw one workero helping out a mentally challenged man, taking money out of his own pocket so he could afford some food. I won't deny that the staff has many bad apples, but there are just as many diligent workers-- but get over it, its a hourly waged job in a depressed economy. I, rarely interact with staff, just go in buy my food, check out, and etc.. and when I did need to interact, it got done, not always with a smile and cherry ontop-- but nthen again I am not always the nicest person around either... are you??? Horrible place since they changed management more than a year ago. The minute they changed management they apparently fired the bulk of the staff including the full-timers who received benefits and had accrued seniority. While before the staff was knowledgeable, fun to talk to, and there were rarely long lines at the checkout, now the staff is rude, uninformed, and clearly not well supported by management. This place sucks and I avoid it whenever possible! Can't wait for the Safeway on Georgia Ave to re-open. Tip to management: fire yourself. read more

Now that I don't take the green line metro anymore, I hardly ever make it to this Giant. It's just not very inviting and the people working the checkout lines there are pretty incompetent. Don't ever go on a Monday after work. I know grocery stores are usually busy on Sundays and Mondays after work because people all of a sudden realize they don't have food for the week, but with the time you spend waiting in the checkout line at this Giant, you probably could've gone to a farther grocery store and have all your shopping finished. Not all things are bad at this place though. The produce section is decent and they have bulk nuts that include chocolate malt balls. read more

pros? the only grocery store within 10 blocks. but sunday you'd think we live in communist columbia heights, good luck getting bread, milk or eggs. and i don't understand how in a bad economy you have have employees be so awful. the cashiers look like they move in slow motion. express line?? haha so funny. was in there last week and the fire alarm went off so we all had to exit the building, however they couldn't figure out how to open the emergency exits so we all had to leave through the front door. really safe. read more

After moving to Mt Pleasant, I thought it was a heaven send having a grocery store in walking distance. Self check outs, plenty of staff to come and help you whenever you need it and a store Manager that actually comes out to help the cashiers ring and answer any questions you may have... the service at the Giant is GREAT...but the produce goes bad after a day if you dont use it. The customer service is great. I shop here so much, that they treat me like family. I'd stay away from the fish. The shrimp and scallops are safe, but I'm a firm believer that fish SHOULDN'T smell like fish. It would be awesome if they had more organic produce, a greater selection of herbs and herbal teas, and a better selection of meats. And would it kill them to have fresh ginger or turmeric? I gave three stars for the awesome customer service. But I only shop here for the free parking when I need to go to Target, Best Buy, Payless,Children's Place or Bed Bath and Beyond. read more

Do not plan to go here for a few items in a rush because the place is always packed. I have never been here and seen an open cashier once. The produce is ok, but nothing special, but the rest of place is fine. I'd rather go the Safeway at 5th & K, but I must go here from time to time, it is better than some other area grocery stores. read more

If you would like to spend a lot of money on produce that will rot within three days storing it in your fridge, this is the supermarket for you. While people say it's the only supermarket in the neighborhood, it's not. There are multiple latin markets that have a higher quality of meat and produce by far. Aside from the fresh section of this grocery store being run horribly (constantly out of stock, fruit/vegetables rotting on the shelves, etc) they rest of the store isn't great either. Often they're out of common items. I've always gone to 'big brand' stores such as Giant, Safeway, etc and never have I seen one so poorly run from the perspective of the products they sell and how fresh their 'fresh' products are. Save your money and go to a local market (or farmers market) and get a better grade of item for less. read more

After several visits to this store I am concluding that the management needs to be retrained to properly manage this very busy store. Some of the workers were very helpful and friendly, but more often than not seem to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of customers. Some of the cashiers and workers on the floor itself are less than helpful--but not all of them. read more

I WISH there were another supermarket near my house. I am so SICK of picking thru the garbage at the Giant on Riggs Rd. and Eastern Ave. Rotten cucumbers and egglant. And that LOUD music they play is just nerve-wracking! The self-check outs close at 9:30 PM, so if you go there at nite, you have to stand in a long line to check out your groceries. YUCK! read more

Chronically overcrowded and staffed by employees and management that are consistently rude and incompetent at even the easiest tasks. My boycott began recently when the manager closed THREE checkout lanes at exactly the same time, during peak customer traffic when shoppers were lined up halfway down the grocery aisles waiting to check out. The cashiers "needed to go on break," and she was apparently unable or unwilling to cycle their breaks one at a time, which seems like a fairly easy and obvious solution. With Target and some of the smaller groceries around, particularly if you live close to Mt. Pleasant St., it's easy enough to do without these buffoons. read more

Right now I will give it an Okay rating. I know that it is the only store in the area, besides the little Latino Market down the street. It is busier because the Safeway on Georgia Ave is being rebuilt, that was my store before, because it is only 4 blocks away from my house. But, since going to Giant, I have noticed that if you go on Monday afternoons, you get the deals and way shorter lines. I use to shop on Sunday afternoons, but my aunt had a medical emergency and passed out in line from waiting so long.(No joke) But the staff helped her and I basically forgive all the wrongs that I have seen with the store. But, if you go here you must know - The meat is usually priced well, you have to get their early for bread and chicken selections. And if lines are in the walkways of where you are going, people dont move so you can shop. (Cant help how other customers are, but rude people shop here) I notice that if you have a lot of items the cashiers usually give you dirty looks and suck their teeth. But, I usually bag items myself, to move it quicker, I set up all items in advance to go in certain bags and it seems to move along quicker. I think sometimes cashiers are purposely trying to get fired from their jobs.The cashiers talk bad about each other, and their managers, about their hours, and sometimes they are more worried about their phone text. The people that work their, most of their young employees sag their work pants, I dont want to see your underwear.... Please wear and make your employees wear a belt, and pants that fit. I love the it has at least FREE 2 hour parking. That goes to the 3rd star. read more

Avoid Peapod delivery like it was the plague. Of the last 5 deliveries, 4 were problematic. Delivery to wrong house - delivery missed completely - 2 deliveries of someone else's food - 2 imcomplete deliveries. If there were someone else in my town that delivered I would drop Giants "Peapod" like a searing hot poker. read more

Sorry! But this is not The Giant I used to know years ago. (Before it was sold to a foreign company.) The staff used to be friendly and the products were fine. I remember they would go out of their way to order special products for you if you needed them. What a difference today. The store is littered with uneducated, loud African American employees who speak over you into the next isle or register with no consideration. (and wow...the subject of the conversations! you just have to listen to them!) The food is mostly convenience store type. I would give anything for a Harris Teeter or a whole Foods open a store here. This Giant is on par with other Giant locations I'd say, however it serves a large number of local residents as there is not another chain grocery store in the neighborhood, and such the line is always ridiculously long to checkout, even in the express aisle... it is USUALLY stretching to the middle of the store... forget it on weekends... read more

i do not like coming here self-checkouts are abundant, their lines equally or greater in length, the self-checkout overseers will make you acknowledge their temporary power over your life i wish the cashiers would go on strike to get paid enough to 'care' rather than move as slowly as possible because they're not paid enough to 'care' i have not yet seen the cilantro in a state that might 'objectively' be considered 'fresh', i have retina-display quality pictures as proof usually you're offered 'low prices' when corners are cut in service, not here read more
