Love love love this shop! It's the only place in DC i've found to sell my favorite tropical fruits and veggies. It might serve you to call and ask if they have what you're looking for before you get there because their stock can be inconsistent beyond the pantry staples. It's a tight space so it's best to be in and out which isn't hard as the staff is quick and helpful. The produce here lasts a liiiiitle less time in the fridge than that of a traditional grocery store but for the prices you really cannot beat it. read more

I'm not a big Yelper BUT I had to come on here and give my two cents because it might just help others make a decision as to whether they want to stop by and do their shopping here. First of all - I am not from Washington D.C, I just moved here from Los Angeles CA about two weeks ago. And let me just say --produce in D.C is ridiculously expensive...I almost had a heart attack the first time I walked into the grocery store last week...paying 1$ for ONE orange, 2.50$ for ONE avocado...50 cents for ONE lemon? Back in California we pay nearly nothing for our produce because it's grown in our state. Any who, so when I found out this store existed, I walked over excited that I'd finally pay reasonable prices. First impressions: It's near whole sales stores - homeless sitting outside, parking but the road is not well paved and its like we would say back home "hood". The store itself - Not sure if I saw a Sign at the entrance but you see all the produce as soon as you walk in, It's small, it looks like an outdoor market, signs with prices are hand written, produce is pilled everywhere, you can buy in bulk and ask for a cheaper prices, and you don't get a paper receipt. The woman at the counter speaks both Spanish and English. Another gentleman was loading a truck and kept walking through the store with big cases of produce, I am not sure when they receive their deliveries but it would be good to know so you can show up that day and get all their new stuff. I paid a total of 30$, only because I spent 16$ on a bag of 5 pound mozzarella cheese (I want to make a veggie Lasagna later) - the rest was fresh fruits and beans. Don't expect 5 star produce, it's CHEAP, BUT with that you must pick your fruit with a critical eye. If you are going to be cooking up a feast and need the veggies asap, this is PERFECT -if you are going to have the veggies in your fridge for day's on end, I would suggest you purchase a limited amount, don't think the veggies will last very long. I expect to be going here weekly! :D I live 3-4 blocks down the street and while the area is sketchy, it's worth the walk. p.s I would have taken pictures of the store itself but I already look like an outsider that I didn't want to make it any more obvious! haa. I almost never review, but I'm passionate about keeping this business around. They have peppers and garlic and anything you could ever need to make your favourite Mexican food, and the quantities you would need to make it. At Mexican Fruits there's no more fighting that yoga mom in Whole Foods for a measly pound of peppers that aren't even ripe. You can browse for the best 3 lbs of peppers you will find in this whole city and they will helpfully assist you while you do it. Bike parking is scarce but they've always accommodated me. I would highly recommend this store to anyone for its food, incredible prices, and amazing service. read more

So I was walking back home - on my way from that newly opened Union Market and noticed this little gem with an 'OPEN' sign in front of it. The name says it all - Mexican Fruit - which contains one of the largest varietys of fresh fruits and vegetables you'll find anywhere. The place isn't pretty so for all of you guys who felt spoiled and pampered by the cleanliness and warmth of Union Market - you will not find that here. Instead you will find a beautiful panoply of fruits, vegetables, spices, pastas, candies, and other unexpectedly useful items at a very low low price. I was able to get several bags of pasta, plantains, fresh limes and oranges, a big bag of cardamom, and these unbeliebly delectable Mexican coconut treats consisting of fresh shredded coconut wrapped in candied lime peel. I'm already craving them and must acquire more of these ASAP. This all cost a mere $10. I was thrilled. This is the kind of place that reminded me of my childhood trips to Pittsburgh's Penn Avenue and perhaps this is somewhat the way union market looked like in its heyday. I really hope this business stays the way it is in light of the innevitable gentrification this neighborhood will experience. And I recomend it to anyone who might be willing to step out of the "shelter" that is the new Union Market. read more

Yoooooooooo! Nooooooooo! Woooooooahhhh! (Any other exclamation one would like to insert here would be apropos...) I haven't paid 1 Dollar for 10 limes since I left Texas. I can't .... my heart can't take it. Miss 'I'm a foodie, not a recent DC transplant, semi-health nut, love the off-the-beaten-path-anything' had this place bookmarked for years, and totally forgot about it, though I passed by it all of the time. Shame..... Thank you Mexican Fruits for my reasonably priced cilantro, rosemary, thyme, pineapple, bell pepper, American green onions/Mexican green onions/scallions/whatever, tomatoes, lettuce, plantain, avocados, et cetera.... I really can overlook a whole bushel of overripe, bruised mangoes... it's only hit-or-miss if you don't know how to shop for produce. I haven't felt this good about shopping since I got the end of day hookup from the farmers at a local market... Now I'll have to stop using the B.S. excuse of saying it's too expensive to be a vegan, and just say I like my meat. Shame... read more

I'm a DC transplant from Texas so when I go to Walmart and have to pay $2 for one bell pepper, it makes me not want to eat... like ever or go to the next McDonald's and order off the dollar menu. My friend introduced me to a meat market right next to this place and I decided to check it out since it looked like there was a lot of traffic. When I tell you their prices are jaw dropping that's even putting it lightly. I was amazed how decently priced the fruits and vegetable were and reminded me of my days in Texas. They had two rather huge bell peppers for $1 compared to the $1.89 you pay for one at Walmart or other grocery stores. They have huge watermelons (I'm a watermelon junkie) the size of 4 heads for $3. I bought a whole bag of FRESH broccoli for $2.50 (this is not a joke. Please see my pictures. Lol). They also have rice beans and other grains that you can measure out and buy per pound and it comes out to about one-third the price of the prepackaged ones in the grocery store. One thing to watch out for is spoilage. Obviously with the price comes some downsides which one major one is spoilage. Due to the nature of the store, some of the fruit and vegetables might have wilted due to the heat or just duration. I personally don't have a problem with that cos I am skilled in the selection of fruits and vegetables. Overall I am extremely pleased with this place and I have saved so much money purchasing from here. It makes it way easier and worth it if you're a healthy eater who doesn't want to pay ridiculous prices for fruits, vegetables and spices. read more

Mexican Fruits has it all - tomatoes, mushrooms, peas, spinach, beets, potatoes, yams, kale, beans, rice, bananas and many more! The prices are extremely cheap! The only catch is that the produce is sometimes on it's way out and will have to be used within the week, if not a couple of days. Shoppers are advised to select produce with a critical eye. I go through a lot of produce. Seriously, I can put fruit away like nobody's business. Chalk it up to my Caribbean heritage. Combine this with the fact that green smoothies are a part of my regular breakfast routine, and you have a recipe for a grocery bill gone through the roof. In Philly, I dealt with this by purchasing my produce at a place called Produce Junction, which sold large, family-sized amounts of produce for very good prices. So when I moved to DC, my first order of business was to figure out who was going to supply me with fresh, reasonably-priced produce. Enter, Mexican Fruits! Never would have found this place were it not for my fellow Yelpers. It's in a stretch of wholesalers out near Union Market. I recommend using a GPS if you're unfamiliar with the area. I had a little trouble navigating the one-way streets, although I'm sure that's just because it was my first time driving down there. There are also lots of huge trucks loading and unloading, workers walking around with carts, forklifts scooting about, and when you park, you might find yourself having to make a blind turn in order to get back out of the space. My advice: just stay calm and stay aware of your surroundings, more than you even usually would. That said, it's totally worth it to make the trip. I've been appalled by the price of produce in DC supermarkets. At Mexican Fruits, I purchased: 20 small ripe bananas (I use them for my green smoothies) 1 large bunch of black grapes 1 hand of ginger 1 giant bag of curly kale 1 medium-sized bag of onions 3 chayote squash 6 limes 1 peeled papaya 1 peeled pineapple All for the very palatable sum of $13.50. Score!! This was a pretty small purchase for me, but I'm trying to get better about not letting food go bad, so I'd rather shop a little more often than end up with more food than I can use. Also, the food is quite ripe when you get it, so the window to use it will likely be a bit smaller. The store is a little cramped, but it wasn't too crowded when I went (a weekday morning). The staff were friendly and greeted everyone warmly. They were fluent in both Spanish and English, and most food items had both Spanish and English names listed. You do have to look at the items closely, as some things, especially apples and pears, were a bit too bruised for my liking. However, there are great deals to be had here, especially if you are someone who goes through a ton of produce. The herbs and greens looked great, and so did the winter squash. They also have dry, canned, and bottled items. Tons of reasonably priced dried legumes varying between around $1 and $1.25/pound. Big bags of rice. Lots of dried chilis and other spices. And they also had giant jars of huitlacoche for $7.50. I'll probably pick a jar up next time I go. Update: I have now consumed the grapes and the peeled pineapple. I've paid very close attention to the prices and quality -- and yes, you must be certain to use it soon, because its not pristine like a Harris Teeter, nor does it have 3 or 4 dollars tacked on. I'm telling you - you can get significantly discounted produce (interpret - - save beaucoup bucks - jalapeños, cilantro, gigantic carrots, tomatoes, garlic, peppers, even jarred and canned stuff - - you name it. This is the first place I've found in DC that has decently-priced produce. Yes, you'll have to sort through to find the fruits and vegetables you want, but the prices are not to be beat. Last time I was there I bought tomatoes for 79 cents/lb, tomatillos for 89 cents/lb and a huge white coconut for $1.50, among other things. Mexican Fruits has been around the old DC farmer's market / downtown for a long time. They offer what I like to call 2nd rate fruit and really low prices. The fruit is generally what seems like leftover stock that a grocery store would not want to display and is about to go bad. But if you pick wisely--its a great value. Great spot for a deal on fruit and veggies, my first stop in the market!

I had been looking for a quality bodega or a place to get fresh produce that wasn't absurdly expensive in Washington, DC for a long time and this is it people. Mexican Fruits has a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs (30 for $3!) milk, tostadas, queso, crema, jarritos, rice, beans and other groceries. You will get more food than you can eat in a week for under $20- it's amazing. "Pero no hablo espanol", you say; No ha problema- The staff is friendly and bilingual. The best way to get there is to bike, take the 96 bus, or get off at NY/NoMa Metro stop and walk. You'll be happy you did. Buen Provecho. read more

Mexican Fruits is my happy place. It's incredible the amount of good produce and other groceries you can walk out of that store with for $10-20. It's literally 3 times as much as what you'd get at Whole Foods or a comparable super market. The fruit trends toward the ripe side, so you don't want to buy produce for a week out but for today or the next couple of days for the more perishable items, but if you're selective, you can even work around that. AND the people who work there are awesome. I believe a husband and wife run it, and this past Valentine's Day I saw the husband deescalate a situation that was 2 seconds from two middle-aged women brawling (it gets packed in there, so you may get bumped, or you may be annoyed by somebody blocking an aisle... in this particular instance, a woman reared back with her shopping basket in retribution for one such slight, and in response the other woman shouted "DO IT!! DO IT!!," until the owner stepped in "Please ladies, it's Valentines Day"). Anyway, I love it hear, it's a one-of-a-kind store in DC. read more
