This Giant is...awful. Even with security (who just stands there and does nothing), there is an incredibly high amount of theft. The prices are double and triple that of other Giant stores. The app will say something is on sale for $4. You go to this store and it's actually $12. Whole Foods is often cheaper than here. There's pretty much never anything but self-checkout open. And it's all just messy and unkempt. read more

I had a very disturbing experience at the Giant Reisterstown location and I will not stay quiet about it. My child, who has a disability, was using a wheelchair when we entered the store. An employee immediately told him to "get off." I clearly stated that my child has a disability and requires the wheelchair, yet staff continued to argue with me and insisted he could not use it simply because he is a child. It did not stop there. Employees began speaking loudly about us in front of other customers, causing unnecessary attention and embarrassment. My child and I were both humiliated. To make matters worse, we were followed around the store. When I addressed the issue with the manager (Jackson), he repeated the same false claim and dismissed my concerns instead of correcting his staff. This is not just bad customer service this is a serious lack of ADA awareness and basic respect. You do NOT question or deny someone's use of a wheelchair because you "don't think" they need it. No parent should have to defend their child's disability in a grocery store. I expect Giant to address this immediately with proper staff training and accountability. Until then, I would strongly reconsider shopping at this location. read more

1 word, PATHETIC. Giant has begun forcing us to receive our deliveries from the local store vs the dependable delivery service with dedicated Giant employees in clean Giant trucks. We received our order at 715 AM. OUT OF STOCK 5 items, incorrect 5 items. We received paper plates vs bowls, 8 inch. vs 10 inch and were charged for the more expensive. We received 1 pkg of 20 count plates vs 100 count Giant brand charged for Dixie received 20 count giant. No bread, no coffee, no Giant tomato sauce, no Giant sliced cheese and no bacon. Why the hell did we bother. Pathetic, Im sure at least some of the items were in stock. read more

1 Star I'm beyond disappointed with Giant Food on H Street. I purchased two loaves of Nature's Own Perfectly Crafted Brioche Style Bread, only to get home and find out they were both molded. Not just a little -- completely inedible. This tells me no one is checking expiration dates on perishable items, which is basic grocery store 101. What makes it worse? I live 30 minutes away, so returning them isn't exactly convenient. When I called the store to let them know, customer service had no answer--literally just silence. As a long-time customer at this location and resident of the neighborhood, I was completely mortified shopping here today. Typically, I drive to pick up my online order, but today I decided to walk. Biggest mistake. I asked the customer service associate if I could pick up my order at the customer service desk or if someone needed to go downstairs to retrieve it. I was told I could pick it up upstairs. The gentleman called for my order, but after waiting a few minutes I decided to pick up a few additional item; less than five. After I purchased those items, I went back to the customer service desk and continued to wait as my order was called again. After more waiting, the customer service agent offered to go downstairs to pick it up. While doing so, he saw the person shopping the orders and told her I was here for mine. She asked if I could walk with her downstairs to get it. I agreed. As I exited the store with the employee, a tall male security guard approached me and asked for my receipt. Flustered, I couldn't remember where I had put it, but I explained that I was going to pick up my online order. He asked the online associate, who nonchalantly said she didn't see me purchase anything so she didn't know. He then told me to go back for a receipt, but I was following the associate to pick up the items I had already purchased online and planned to return upstairs. While in the elevator with the associate, I realized the receipt was at the bottom of my bag. When I went back upstairs, I produced the receipt but was told that when I stepped through those particular doors I needed to show it. Flustered and embarrassed, I went back to customer service and asked to speak to a supervisor. Tiffany, the supervisor at the time, said she was sorry for what I experienced, but that it was their policy and she would talk to the security guard about his approach. As a neighborhood resident, it feels disheartening to be treated like a criminal in my local store. read more

Do NOT go to this Giant for immunizations. Even if you make an appointment, they'll still make you wait 30+ minutes. Once they actually do see you, they do a terrible job - making shots far more painful than usual. Avoid at all costs. Terrible, unpleasant service all around. read more

This was my first time shopping in a Giant. We stayed nearby and went here 2x. The second time they wanted to keep my wife's backpack while we shopped. I told the security guard that she was a cop( retired) and he let her keep her bag. The store was not well stocked. The produce wasn't fresh. The employees were not very helpful at all. When this story opened, we were delighted to have a new addition. Those days are long gone. The parking structure is filled -- but not with customers of Giant. The lot is not patrolled, so local workers park for free. Going up to the store requires steps because the elevator is broken. A trip to the bathroom is like a descent into hell. The produce was looking pretty good and the price on corn, albeit picked over, was good. The price for chicken was not what was advertised, but the circular was a bit misleading. There is security on site, which is a good thing because there are a lot of scary people in the store. You wonder who manages it and if Giant cannot afford a gallon of paint to freshen up a store that looks worn to the bone. If you can avoid it, I would. read more

My friend and I visited this Giant the Thursday before all of the shutdowns started (3/12/2020) and already everyone was scrambling because WHO had already declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Unsurprisingly, many of the shelves were empty or low in stock (water, paper towels, sanitizing wipes, meats) but the lines surprisingly went really fast. Kudos to the staff for maintaining their cool and keeping customers moving. The garage, however, was a nightmare to get out of, both in terms of signage and the volume of customers walking and other cars trying to pass. read more

I like this store. It's not perfect, but it's so much cheaper than Whole Foods! And way more selection than Trader Joe's! It's not scary, like some people said, and I find the place well-stocked. And, again, cheap-ish. The cashiers can be a tad...indifferent, but you'd be too if you had that job. You should go there a few times, and shop. If you don't like it, you can go elsewhere, there are a fair number of groceries in the area. Oh, and I've never had to weigh my own produce--unlike one of the reviewers. read more

Giant is a supermarket chain found on the east coast. My husband and I decided to stop in this particular location on Saturday afternoon, since it is so close to our current vacation rental. We came in to stock up on essentials for easy breakfast items in the mornings and on the go snacks for our trip. This Giant is located on the corner between H Street & 3rd Street. There is a Capitol Bike Share dock right outside in case you wish to dock your bike or rent one to bring your groceries back to your place. Never been to a Giant market, I thought it was interesting that we had to weigh our own produce. I didn't realize this until I saw another customer doing this with all of her produce items. Basically, you use the one and only touch screen (there really should be another one of these machines) to find your produce item and weigh it. Then you print the sticker with the barcode and place it on your produce bag. I guess this saves time for the cashiers at the front, but this isn't normal practice other markets and found it to be just odd. Anyways, my husband and I purchased yogurt, water, some packaged snacks, in addition to our fruit. Service was friendly for the most part and if I lived in this area, I would probably be a regular. Also just wanted to mention for those visiting out of town, DC charges for bags ($0.05 per bag) so consider bringing a reusable bag if you go grocery shopping (or look silly carrying all of your items back to your car because you refused to pay $0.05 for a bag). read more

I've never had an issue finding something at this Giant and enjoy their produce as well. If you live near H Street NE, I recommend Giant. I placed an order for delivery tonight. Over the last 6 months or so, the driver / delivery person has left the delivery by the door and I get it after. Tonight the driver refused to leave my order, even though it's supposed to be a contactless delivery. He kept telling me it's quality and that he's going to "have someone call me." I don't know why tonight is different, but they refused to leave my groceries. Then some guy named Juan called me to bluntly tell me that they will take their order back. I asked to speak to speak to a supervisor and he hung up the phone on me. I will NEVER shop here again. Worst customer service EVER, especially when it's something as important as groceries. I like this location b/c it's central to Union station and there's street car stop is in front of the store. I always find a sale and my item in this store. Great for little of big things. The store has a lot of self checkout setups and usually 3 cashiers for those who want a person to check out their items. The line usually goes fast for self check out to grab a quick item if need be. This is not my favorite Giant in DC I prefer the one near the Mt. Vernon station area but this one more often times than not always has what I want. read more

Let me start with the positive: they have parking and a semi-decent beer selection for a chain grocery store. And, the produce is decent. HOWEVER: There is no cell reception in the parking lot. Which is not cool when you are with the kids napping in the car, and your spouse is in the store, and you forgot to tell her to grab some mayo. And, why is it that the average age of shoppers is a decade my junior? I am NOT that old. The millennial couples clog the aisles as they read labels, judge gluten, and inspect sugar content. Please stop traveling in pairs down the aisle! As for the young singles? I worry for your health. no one should eat that much frozen pizza. Oh. Remove your headphones. I have a cart full of food and I need to get by. My kids might awaken and they WILL be hungry. Hugely lacking in customer service. Hugely lacking in employees at the registers, which is weird because there are a million of them just wandering around the store. Lunch ready-to-go review: I've seen better. The hot food bar offers steam-table mac&cheese, chicken, etc. The salad bar at $6/lb has a pretty good selection of greens and vegetables. Also a small cool case of pre-made sandwiches and some little boxes of sushi. Giant runs a daily lunch deal of $5 for a 6-inch sub, bag of chips and a 20-ounce soda (or water), that's maybe half the price of similar food in Union Station. This particular Giant is terrifying. They post an employee an inch from the shopping baskets so no chance of social distancing. I'm assuming their responsibility is shopper count and mask compliance. This is also where employees congregate to hangout. Today there were three employees around the baskets, two with masks down around their necks and a security guard with no mask at all. I complained to the manager who was concerned, professional and immediately responsive. This store is a half block from my building but is truly a health hazard at this point, I won't return. I'll walk the extra couple of blocks to Whole Foods. read more

This giant is very different on the time of the day you go. Day time is ok, not to busy and shelves seem stocked. During the evening it is a different story. In the evening and weekends the shelves are empty and the service drops greatly. The manager must work Monday-Friday mornings because of such a difference. Last visit an employee was about to fight a customer and girls who were putting items from the registers back to the shelves thought it was funny to throw merchandise at each other down the isles. I live in the neighborhood and fortunately there is a Whole Foods three blocks down H street. Prices are higher but worth avoiding the store evenings. read more

I will keep going back to this Giant because I live very close, but I won't like it. CONS: -They are frequently out of produce. Popular produce like avocado. How do you not start ordering more avocado after you've been open this long and it's something you ALWAYS run out of two days before it's restocked?! I digress. -For whatever reason, there are NEVER the correct amount of check out lines open. Even during he busiest times, there are at most three or four cashiers and not all the self-check out lines are open. You end up in line halfway down the isle behind you waiting for longer than it took you to pick the things that are in your cart. If you go during a busy time, just turn around and leave. PROS: -They carry Boars Head in the deli section. -The pharmacy staff is great. They are quick, helpful and recognize you when you return. -Ronnie (sp?) is awesome. He usually works days, but is their best staff member. He is kind, helpful and so sweet. My daughter adores him and knows him by name. EVERY time we walk in Giant she asks if he's there. He remembers her and takes time to talk to her and ask her how she's been. -They are open early/late. I keep returning because of the fair prices and convenience, but this store has a lot of room for improvement. read more

It looks like the Harris Teeter a half a mile away has some competition. This Giant is niiiice. In comparison to the not so great Safeway at Hechinger Mall, this place is bright, clean and all of the freezers are stocked and working. There are more choices in the produce department and all of the selections in the deli, bakery, and seafood sections look fresh and are priced just right. For "I can do it myself" people like me, the Scan It and self-checkout stands are a real treat. Enter the phone number associated with your savings card or scan your card and take one of the scanners. Use the "weigh it" machines to print out stickers for your produce and scan your items as you shop. When you're done shopping scan or enter in your phone number at the Scan It check out stand, scan the bar code above the monitor, wait for your order to process, pay and you're on your way! No one seems to use these things much so it's the quickest way to wrap up a trip. I hear that a Yes Organic Market is coming to replace H ST Playhouse. Let's hope that the spread of grocery stores in local neighborhoods reaches the Anacostia area of SE. That Giant looks a little lonely. read more

Hokay so: This Giant is walking distance from my apartment on Capitol Hill. If you want to pretend like you are in the Hunger Games, then this is the grocery store for you. Every time I come here on a Sunday afternoon (I know, not the best time to come), they are OUT OF EVERYTHING. No chicken breast, no milk, no butter, no eggs, no onions, no vegetables..... it's ridiculous. Last time I was here, I had to fight someone for the last chicken breast. For a grocery store being open 24 hours, one would think that they would be restocking constantly.. WRONG.... Although it is in a convenient location, the produce is OK at BEST. And everything is still pricey. I have come here before and gotten an onion, only to find it molding 2 days later.... When is the Trader Joe's opening again?????? read more

Technology has revolutionized the grocery shopping experience, and Giant has given the H street community the first glimpse. I could not have been more excited about the impending opening of this location. I have never been closer than a mile to a grocery store since moving to DC 7 years ago, and this one is just a block and a half away in a neighborhood that badly needed a reprieve from double-priced corner stores. Then to find out this location was to be 24 hours?! Aah. The "Scan It" system just took the cake. How it works: you walk in and grab a little scanner gizmo (or, download an app on your phone that does the same thing.) Then scan each item as you throw it into your cart or bag, and scroll through specials on the screen so you don't miss any sales. When you're done, just pay and go. This is the fastest check out system ever!! Not to mention this location is 41,000 square feet, has a great deli and prepared section (which will notify you when your kiosk ordered food is ready), endless produce, and all the customer service I have experienced in my two visits so far has been excellent. Way to go Giant! Flawless execution in meeting the demand in this neighborhood. You may not be Trader Joe's but I love you for who you are. read more

Ok, I thought it was just Sundays, but lately I've been going on Mondays and this Giant is STILL out of a ton of things. These were the things just from my grocery list that they didn't have stocked today: (unpackaged) kale, eggplant, asparagus, serrano peppers, cilantro, organic baby spinach, red onions, or chicken breasts supposedly on sale. I consider those staples, and I'm pretty annoyed that this happens every single week. And, heads up: they are no longer open 24/7. (I think they close from like midnight to 5 or 7) I guess I'll keep going because it's two blocks away. There's also free parking in a garage. I think the prices are pretty good (but I moved here from Manhattan)-- but even compared to Harris Teeter on 1st, I think Giant is a much better deal. Especially when it comes to sales. Produce isn't always the best but it's good enough for me (assuming they have it)-- but I'd stay away from the flowers, they're in bad shape. read more

Updated April 2016: I used to really like this place. Now it feels like a failed relationship: once promising, but now filled with painful memories and regret. They're always out of things, it's almost a sure bet that you'll walk out of the store missing something essential. The produce section is disorganized, and every trip is like Russian Roulette - you never know when they're going to be missing something basic. Good luck finding cilantro, parsley, or zucchini after 4 PM. I know this may be nitpicky, but dried fruits (apricots, raisins, etc.) are spread across three different sections of the store so you go on a Tolkienesque adventure every time. I swear it changes from week to week. Also, forget about the meat department. If you want anything but of the most basic cuts of meat you're going to be left high and dry. I now bike to grocery stores further afield simply because they're more reliable and more likely to have what I need. I've walked into this store thinking "I only need three things" and leave kicking myself for believing that I could have found everything and do it in reasonable time. This particular location never disappoints in being the absolutely worst grocery store at which I've ever shopped. While it (very) occasionally delights me with fully stocked fruits and veggies, my expectations are never exceeded by the nowhere-to-be-found bakery staff, long check-out lines and consistent lack of baggers. I had one truly memorable experience, among all the horrifying ones, when I was waiting behind someone in the self-check-out line who had to have his beer purchase validated. When a clerk finally appeared excruciatingly slowly sauntering in our direction swinging his rope of super-secret cashier keys, he watched us watching him, oblivious to the spreading frustration.
