I have been taking my rescue dog to Thousand Islands Animal hospital for the past 12 years and…read morerecently had to put my dog to sleep. Over the years, Dr. Bender has saved my dog on multiple occasions and helped make sure he had the best life possible! Until recently, Dr. Bender has been the sole veterinarian there and works 6 days a week without a break. She is dedicated to what she does and does it well. My dog and I recently meant her new partner Dr. Kelsey and she is great as well! The entire time I have taken my dog there, Dr. Bender, Dr. Kelsey, and their AMAZING vet tech/support staff (shout out to Ashley, Lora, Hannah, Julie, Amber & Chelsea) have answered all my questions (trust me, there were many) and concerns and made sure my dog was seen whenever he needed to. I know he was not their only patient and it had to have been difficult to squeeze him in, but they never made me feel like I was wasting their time. And on one of the worst days of my life, when I had to say goodbye to my beloved pup, they went above and beyond and made sure it was a peaceful, comforting experience. Mail in authorization is a waste of money (postage, envelope), time, and runs the risk of the form being lost in the mail. The stress imposed upon pet owners to go through this process is uncalled for, and preventable. This level of burden placed upon pet owners is a bad look for VCA. Well, I was irate after this mornings visit for regular, annual bloodwork required for my 18 year…read moreold cats diabetic condition, as well as his rabies vaccination. The vet seemed confused as to why I was there. After doing a 'check up' on Lokicat, he asked if I wanted bloodwork done (I was thinking 'How can he not know that's what I'm here for'?). Yes, I need his bloodwork done as I'd received a call from the clinic saying that he required bloodwork prior to the clinic dispensing any more insulin. At the same time, they informed me that Lokicat was due for his rabies vaccine... 'great, lets do that at the same time'. I almost fell on the floor when I received the invoice for $347.83. Upon arriving home, I called the Thousand Islands Animal Hospital in Alexandria Bay, NY (equidistant from my location to Gananoque), and requested a quote for 'complete bloodwork, annual checkup, and rabies vaccination'.I was quoted $165 USD (about $220CDN with 33% exchange rate, or $127.83 less than my visit to Gananoque). I wrote the letter (see below), and returned to the clinic, hand delivered it to Dr. M. Brown, who essentially said 'sorry for the misunderstanding' (at my expense). How anybody can afford to pay 58% higher fees for an inferior service is baffling to me. I called Lokicats former vet in Alexandria Bay - she graciously offered to review Lokis bloodwork from Gan, and to give Loki his annual checkup at the same time my second cat is due for his checkup. I wrote the letter (attached), spoke to the vet, and posted this review because I believe that down the road this clinic will be asking 'Why is our business not growing?'. Poor service, extremely high pricing, and confusion over the reason for appointments is why. That said, the front office staff are always pleasant and very helpful. (While I was waiting to see Dr. Brown, I texted a few friends about the situation. Their response was universal: 'Thats why we take our dog/cat to Kingston/Alex Bay/Brockville'). Returned months later with a very ill dog and was advised it would take $2,000 to conduct tests. They were nice enough to sell me $350 worth of ineffective medication. My dog soon died and I informed them of this. I was surprised to receive an email from them the following day asking me to review their service. It informed me that my pet's health is their primary concern and concluded by saying something to the effect of "have a nice day and we look forward to seeing you and your pet soon". This appears to be a very cold, disorganized clinic.

She is sensitive to prescription vet diets but will tolerate a non-prescription urinary tract diet we give her: when she can eat. Our family brought her to several vets who made various efforts to help her, such as a prescription stomach medicine that helps with nausea and stimulates appetite, to no avail. Because, our fur-baby is also sensitive to certain traditional meds and methods. Dr. Cortes immediately pinpointed what Jemima needed, a series of injections to be repeated periodically as needed. Her appetite is terrific afterward, and it has lasted sometimes for 4 months. In addition: this is a human being who loves animals. Animals are his life. He lives, breathes and interacts with them as though they were his own. They are. His knowledge is matched with his keen instincts and skilled decision-making. I highly recommend him, yes, even to people who may have to travel some extra miles to get to him. Well worth the effort.
