Visited today on a spectacular spring day (happened to be Earth Day.) The sky was so blue, the birds were singing, and the gardens were bursting with color. My favorite part of the gardens is the Japanese garden with its countless deep red Japanese maples, reflecting pools, shaded benches for contemplating the gardens' beauty. It's a beautiful place to take a stroll and have lunch in the shaded outdoor dining area next to the sandwich shed. Sandwiches are delicious, prepared by the fabulous Home Restaurant in the area. Make a day of it! Bring your book, have some lunch, and walk the gardens for a peaceful day out in nature. read more

There are plenty of parking spaces, you will see guides to lead your car to available spot. Currently tulips are off from its peak season, you can still see some, daffodils are in full bloom, also the azaleas are poised to burst forth at any moment. With weak or no cellular signal or Wi-Fi available within the gardens, visitors can pay full attention on admiring the beauty of nature. The gardens occupies total of 376 acres, featuring over 250 acres of landscaped gardens divided into several distinct sections: the Japanese Gardens, the Monet Waterlily Gardens, the Daffodil Gardens, and the Manor Gardens. The Japanese Gardens occupy a central position within the estate, covering 40 acres and featuring streams, ponds, miniature islands, small bridges, and Japanese maples. As one strolls through this section, one can deeply contemplate the core tenets of Japanese aesthetics: *Mono no aware* (物の哀れ the pathos of things), *Wabi-sabi* (侘寂 Wabi-austere beauty and sabi -rustic patina or beauty in aging), and *Yūgen* (幽玄 profound and mysterious grace and subtleness rather than obvious beauty. mystery). *Mono no aware* is certainly palpable here; the seasonal colors are vivid, yet most of the tulips have already faded. However, visitors do not see the withered blooms, as they are swiftly cleared away. This practice is, in fact, an authentic element of Japanese aesthetics--one that does not seek to deliberately pander to visitors. After all, imperfection and impermanence inevitably evoke a sense of melancholy, which lies at the very heart of Japanese aesthetic philosophy. As for *Wabi-sabi* and *Yūgen*, they are subtly woven into every detail of the landscape, inseparable from the whole. I could sense the garden's inherent simplicity and minimalism--its use of "negative space" and evocative atmosphere--such as the circular stone steps leading into the lake, only to come to an abrupt stop. Is it perhaps an example of the essence of sudden enlightenment found in Buddhist philosophy? Throughout the gardens, various Japanese-style shrines and stone lanterns are scattered everywhere, exuding that distinct aura of ethereal elegance and profound tranquility characteristic of traditional Japanese gardens. The floral plantings are meticulously designed to rotate with the changing seasons: spring brings a display of tulips and daffodils; summer features water lilies--specifically in the "Monet Water Lily Garden," which boasts 140 varieties of lilies and a replica of Monet's bridge; and autumn offers a vibrant tapestry of colorful foliage alongside sweeping fields of Sulfur Cosmos wildflowers. I visited the Butchart Gardens in Victoria over 30 years ago--a truly stunning garden that, at the time, was awash with tulips. Gibbs Gardens is beautiful. A friend recommended I go once the Japanese Maples around town started changing color and that's what we did. Our trip in October was epic. Special note: there is a little Monet Gardens/Lily pond there. So sweet. In August I had gone to Monet's actual gardens and house and also saw Water Lilies at the Orangerie in Paris and this was... pure delight. Totally worth the drive. Honestly, it's not that far from the city, but something about heading up 400 always feels like a time warp--what's supposed to be an hour feels like forever. But let me tell you: every single minute of that drive was worth it. At first glance, the entrance might have you questioning what's waiting inside. But the moment you step through the main entrance building, your entire world is about to be rocked. Gibbs Gardens is mind-blowing. From the parking lot greeters to the kind older gentleman welcoming guests with a smile, to the friendly ladies at the register--everyone here made us feel genuinely welcomed. Admission was $25 per adult, and trust me, it's a bargain for what you're about to experience. Now for the star of the show--the gardens. This place is a living, breathing masterpiece. A seasonal showcase of nature, thoughtfully curated and bursting with beauty. We metaphorically got lost in the expansiveness of it all--don't worry, it's well-marked with signs, but you'll feel wonderfully immersed. The Japanese Hill and Pond Stroll Garden (over 40 acres!) was nothing short of magical. Entering through a Torii gate, we followed a gentle path that weaved past spring-fed ponds, peaceful bridges, and monumental stones. It's the largest Japanese Garden in the U.S.--and it shows. The Wildflower Meadow was a burst of life: poppies, larkspur, and coreopsis in radiant bloom, attracting butterflies and bees alike. The air itself felt alive. Hydrangea Heaven--my personal favorite. Over 1,000 hydrangeas in 150 varieties, layered beautifully on a shaded hillside. Colors ranging from blue and lavender to pink and white created a watercolor of nature. Absolutely stunning. Add to that charming photo spots, serene walking trails, peaceful statues, and even a resident house cat lounging outside the manor house (which yes, still appears to be lived in), and it was almost surreal. We spent nearly three hours exploring and still didn't see everything. This place isn't just a garden--it's an escape, a meditation, a must for anyone who appreciates nature at its finest. read more

A beautifully landscaped garden on acres and acres of land about 1 hour north of Atlanta. Each week different flowers are blooming. Check out the website to see what's blooming before you go. The Sunday we went, people were talking about the poppy fields in bloom, but I most enjoyed the Japanese garden and the mountain laurels. My wife who is Canadian had never seen them in bloom before since they don't grown in Atlanta or Ontario. Note: this is a privately owned garden with the admission fee set by Mr. Gibb, who still lives in the site. It's worth it. They do not allow outside food or drinks in the garden. Worth the trip! The gardens are a bit out of the way (45 minute drive from Alpharetta). Reasonably priced at $25, $18 senior 65y+ and $10 child 3-17y. Very beautiful extensive garden boasting 24 ponds, 32 bridge crossings and 19 waterfalls set in 18 seasonal color gardens and 6 feature gardens - Daffodil, Manor House, Japanese, Inspiration, Waterlily and "Le Jardin" Color Gardens. November is the perfect time to visit with moderate temperatures and the leaves turning red orange yellow (closed Dec-Feb). The gardens state "90% of the Manor House & Valley Gardens have shady walks, streams & waterfalls with cooling temperatures." Some paths are paved and others can be pebbly and rocky. Just a really beautiful walk surrounded by fall foliage. Don't feel you need to do the whole thing - even an hour or two is perfect. And someone needs to re-do their map - it's very difficult to look at. read more

Beautiful gardens! I heard the gardens were nice but did not expect this! I visited the last weekend in August and the weather was very nice, perfect for walking. I do wish we would have brought bottled water with us as we did get thirsty along the way. But thankfully there are a lot of shady spots to rest along the way. Located @ 1997 Gibbs Dr Ball Ground, GA Gibbs Garden offers beautiful landscaping and water ponds throughout the park. Use the restrooms before enter and take water with you because neither are available as you walk through the gardens. Wheelchairs, Baby Strollers and Electric Scooters are prohibited in the park. However, I did see a wheelchair route when I walked through the gardens. The multiple flowers, tress and Japanese Maples are all beautiful. I'd definitely visit again and recommend this garden to family and friends. Everything was beautiful!!! read more

Made it back this year in the Fall and this is going to have to be an annual trip this time of year going forward! Simply put, WOW. The Japanese Gardens are absolutely breathtaking. I've never seen maples with such vibrant and rich color all stacked against each other in nature the way they are here at Gibbs Gardens. The red, yellow, and orange hues almost look fake and like they've been painted like the white roses in Alice in Wonderland. It's that spectacular! I could walk around for hours here, and that's allowed and encouraged! If you really want to make the most out of your visit, definitely plan for at a minimum, 2-3 hours so you can walk through all the gardens. They have benches all along the way throughout each garden so you can stop and take a break from walking if needed. The cafe is also a great addition and open until 4pm. I snagged some hummus and pimento cheese dip for a quick snack before heading home and it was delicious! Came with homemade crackers which were also quite yummy and flavorful. I may have to try and squeeze in one more visit before the end of the year. read more

I came here as a group with two other people and was pleasantly surprised. There were few people here, and there was a gift shop and cozy looking cafe as you entered. The landscapes were beautiful, and the staff was very helpful and informative. There was even an adorable cat sleeping in the grass (and if you have a fear of cats, don't worry- he was minding his own business out of the way. We almost didn't notice him). However, some area aren't wheelchair and baby carriage accessible (although most spots are). Overall a pleasant place to visit for a bite of food, walk, or even a date. read more

Not service animal friendly. We had called the day before to ask if we can come because we have a service animal to which they said they gladly welcome them so we purchased tickets. Today, we got there and there were two people checking tickets and letting people in. Before we even got there, the older man on the chair was saying to the lady no that's not a service animal and it doesn't look like one. What does one even look like? They can be any breed. My service animal does not look like those big German shepherds. Nonetheless, he has his certification, and underwent training for specific tasks that he helps with the disability. When we approached, my service animal was working and glued to my husbands side (the one who requires the service). He was not moving or jumping at people or not even a foot away from us because again he was working. The man goes he can't come in because there's no pets. We explained the situation that we called yesterday and they said we can bring our service animal. The man said no and we said we can show our certification ID card from our trainer. The man refused and he said what is the dog for and my husband said my disability he alerts me and the man kept on pressing and said what's your disability. That is protected patient information and it is not legal for them to ask that. They cannot ask what the disability is- that is illegal. They can ask what task they can do and we can show them the task. But to ask what the health disability is it's illegal as it's a HIPPA violation. We stated that we don't feel comfortable sharing but they kept insisting and eventually we told them. That wasn't enough for the man because he looked at the lady next to him and said well your call and she hesitated and eventually said yes but asked if we had poop bags. The service animal is working and is trained- he would not go to the bathroom in the gardens. Either way we always come prepared but a true service animal will relieve themselves when allowed which we would not allow him in the garden because again HE IS WORKING. Sure, they let service animals in, but they are not service animal FRIENDLY. One star for how pretty the gardens were although disappointed with the lack of daffodils and one star for being stroller accessible. I'm merely posting this to warn others and not looking for a response from the owner or the person managing this account as the response to reviews show that they fail to hold accountability and always accuse the customers of lying. read more

We visited Gibbs Garden today and had an extremely disappointing experience. I brought my trained service dogs, who are task-trained to assist with anxiety and panic attacks. When asked, I responded clearly and explained the tasks they are trained to perform--exactly what is required under the ADA. There were two staff members on-site: a woman and an older gentleman. While the woman seemed more neutral, the older man was dismissive, unhelpful, and ultimately denied us entry--even after I offered to show documentation (which is not required by law). For the record, my dogs were calm, clean, well-behaved, and under control the entire time. Service dogs trained for psychiatric support are fully protected under the ADA. Denying access after a person has answered the permitted questions is not only wrong, it's discriminatory. I hope Gibbs Garden takes this as an opportunity to properly train their staff on federal disability laws, so others don't experience the same unfair treatment. read more

From gorgeous Japanese Gardens to beautiful scenery where you can't find this kind of beauty all around the world Gibbs garden is a real treat to the senses. Came here with parents and mother in law along with my wife and just really enjoyed ourselves to a wonderful treat to the senses. Admission is discounted for seniors and there is plenty of parking for all times of year. We missed the tulips season by two weeks so if you want to see the tulips go in March. The flowers and trees were a true treat to see and I must say Gibbs Garden does an amazing job in maintaining a world class garden. I think Gibbs Garden is wonderful and of course some seasons may be more beautiful than others. It's easy to spend at least three hours here because there is so much to see, and if you're not in shape you may have to take frequent breaks, because it is very hilly. It's about 1 hour north of Atlanta and a very easy drive. *Free parking *Recommend purchasing ticket online during busy season *guest wifi is spotty, i also never have cell phone service here so you may want to download an offline map of you're not familiar with the area My favorite time to visit is during the fall season, the maples are stunning around the Japanese garden. It's a very peaceful place to sit. Currently, Gibbs Gardens is open for its 12th Daffodil ColorFest, started on March 1. 20 million+ Daffodils (100+ varieties) adorn 100+ acres of Gibbs Gardens' hillsides and valley from March 1 through April 15. I made the mistake of arriving on opening weekend around 12pm, it was crowded and not the relaxing experience I was looking for while viewing the daffodils. O M Geeeee what a lovely lovely day trip to celebrate Mothers Day! I've been wanting to come here for so long and it did not disappoint. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our 2 hour stroll through the upper and lower gardens. My favorite was the Japanese Garden wow!! So serene and peaceful I could linger all day but we had children with us this visit. We arrived fairly early 12pm and there were hardly anyone in our paths, I noticed as we left it was a little more crowded. The Japanese Garden is a must-see for the autumn season. The vibrant colors and sounds of nature will mesmerize you. Things you should know: I. PARKING FREE and guided by staff to conveniently and quickly help you find a space. II. SERVICE Very friendly, informative, and accommodating. There is a charge for a ticket of entry so be prepared for a fee after you park. III. QUALITY You will not be disappointed by the grounds. I believe there are different parts of the garden that flourish during different seasons so there is always something beautiful to look at. A nice feature is the cafe within the property ~ you can explore the gardens with a cup of coffee in your hands. IV. CAPACITY Weekends can be chaotic. The day I went they were expecting 4,000 guests. The colors of spring were blooming in the tulips and daffodils on a Saturday afternoon in late March. My husband and I spent four hours walking the hundreds of acres. Lots of walking involved; we covered 5.5 miles during our visit. The gardens are immaculately manicured! Not a weed to be had! The on-site Manor House is actually the home to Mr. And Mrs. Gibbs and their three cats. The property also has a carryout cafe with a handful of sandwich options, hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks available for purchase and plenty of outdoor seating. There's also a gift shop. We were looking for the Botanical Gardens in this area and found this little gem quite by accident! I guarantee that the $25 entry fee is totally worth it. We love Callaway Garcens but this place just keeps on giving around every corner. Our arrival in mid November was expected to be very "leafless" but we were blown away by the amazing peacefulness all the way through. Vibrant color, an overwhelmingly satisfying array of plants and trees, and whispering brooks made this the perfect distraction for a long trip. Nothing bad to say here! read more

The glorious colors of Fall in Ball Ground, GA at Gibbs Gardens, it's a beautiful time to walk the gardens. I was finally able to walk the park to behold all of the golden colors. Once you arrive driving down their unpaved graveled road you will see how the bridge to the entrance invites you in. You'll walk through the main entrance with gift shop attached and through double doors to start you walk. Don't forget to pick up a map so you'll know which way to journey. watch out for a few furry feline residents basking in the warm sun. There are several paths, waterways, bridges, and sculptures. Be sure to look for each created area in the garden, the placement of the landscape is purposeful. The beautiful colors of the leaves set the stage for fabulous fall photos. Be mindful as the gardens do not allow staged photos of any kind. If you happen to stop by this fall be sure to visit the manor too. The hike up then down is not for the faint at heart. So wear proper shoes as some areas have steep inclines. This is a peaceful place where you can enjoy the beauty of nature. read more

Shocked I had not already written a review. Well, I will start with the fact that I lived almost around the corner from here for five years and always wanted to come and we just never made it. Then in November of 2020 my boyfriend finally took me! It was an amazing date day and he proposed in the middle of the Japanese garden. It was the perfect day and I fell in love with the gardens! That was just the beginning. I decided to become a member. If you live nearby it's an amazing option to become a member and you can come by several times a year and see all the different cycles of blooms. The garden is forever changing and no day is the same! I come for a quick stroll with my fiancé or I come by myself and just find a spot and read a book. My advice to you? Come here to exercise with a gorgeous walk through whichever part of the gardens you most wish to explore. Come here for a date day. Come with friends and family. Just come. You won't regret it. At minimum I suggest coming for the daffodils in March and then again in fall for the changing foliage of the Japanese gardens. I can't wait for the 2022 season and to see how the gardens change again this year. It's one of my favorite places to visit and was made even more special by being where I got engaged. read more

My fist time at Gibbs Garden and what a beautiful and awesome experience. The property is close to 300 acres of beautiful flowers, plants, tress, gardens, walking trails, ponds, bridges and waterfalls!! You can walk as far as your legs can carry you or stop and rest at the many viewing stations but either way bring your walking shoes. The garden was designed so spectacularly. Different flowers bloom all year long and are cradled with ferns, azaleas mountain Laurels and Dogwoods. There are many viewing areas over looking the flower beds, and different gardens and there are even viewing areas of the North Georgia mountains! Also drinking stations, lunch spots and gorgeous European architecture with an English manor house that's spectacular! And I just love all the different garden statues, so beautiful! They have a total of 16 different gardens but the 3 main ones are Manor House Gardens, Japanese and Waterlily Gardens. Each one so beautiful, it's to hard to pick a favorite!! To big to see it all in one visit, I'll definitely be back a couple more times throughout the year to see different seasonal flowers!! Just a gorgeous place to visit and walk. False Advertising. They don't have 14 million daffodils...they have 20 million. They open in early March. Close in December. We went this last time in September and not a daffodil in sight but still it was stunning. The book written by the owner John Gibbs says it is designed to have a significant new garden in bloom every 3 weeks and looking at the design that appears to be true. Renoir pond is laced with water lilies Japanese gardens studded with unique sculptures that resemble the different characters of folklore (I am not totally sure what they are, but to keep it PC, leave it alone... Be ready for a strip search! The gardens are beautiful but the people working there are very rude and arrogant sometimes. Before you enter the gardens, your pocketbooks, backpacks, even strollers are searched. If you dare come in with snacks, you are sent back to your car to leave them there. You have committed the crime of bringing snacks into the park and they treat you that way. I received an annual pass for Christmas and I used it the other day, only to have some rude old man at the gate search our stuff and ruin our mood at the gardens. I don't care how and beautiful it is there, they need to work on being nicer to the guests, which probably won't happen. It's been that way for years. We won't be back. read more

COVID-19 Update Regardless of politicians' rhetoric, we believe in science and have been following distancing and other precautions very seriously. The trick now is finding activities that allow us to enjoy life while maintaining safety. "Let's check out Gibbs Gardens," my husband said. ***Tickets must be purchased on line, not in person. ***If you go on a weekday -- we were there Tuesday morning-- it is very easy to social distance. Crowds not nearly what they are on weekends. ***The main bathroom is located near the entrance, with limits to the number of people allowed inside at a time. The concept is good, but there was nobody (at least when we were there) wiping down stalls and sinks, and there was no antiseptic spray for handles and knobs. ***There's a second bathroom by the manor house pool. Only two stalls in the women's side, with nobody there cleaning or monitoring ***The tram is inoperable during COVID; people with limited mobility may have trouble getting around. Now -- my impression of the gardens. Nice, but not worth $20 a person, or the hoopla that this place has generated. Free public parks are just as pretty. I understand that plantings vary by season, but what we saw was nothing spectacular. Hydrangeas were stringy, overgrown and pale. (The bushes in my garden are much prettier.) Gibbs' Japanese garden couldn't hold a candle to others that I've visited. I think they play it up with statuary. The exterior of the manor house is grand and beautiful. The interior -- we peeked through the windows -- a big nothing. (Really? A lucite table?!) I don't regret coming. It was a nice ride and it's good to get away from the city. Plus the grounds are shaded and lovely, but not in my opinion, world class. read more

Gibbs Gardens was a really great escape from the city in the midst of all that is going on in the world. I drove up from Avondale Estates in a Saturday morning to unwind. All of the staff, from scanning my ticket to the gift shop to suggesting paths to take, I interacted with were extremely helpful. I absolutely loved the water lilies in the Japanese Gardens and the hibiscus flowers at various places throughout the gardens. I think I missed the day lilies and the hydrangea at their peak bloom, what what I was able to see was beautiful. Next time I'll try to come a little earlier in the summer to see them in full bloom. I definitely plan on returning in spring, early summer, and fall. I also feel like this is a really great alternative to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. COVID related: There is signage at various points about maintaining distance and the restrooms are limited to 3 people only. Masks do not seem to be required in the park, however, all of the garden staff I encountered were wearing masks. Most of the visitors were not wearing masks or would put on mask as they approached others. As someone who is pretty cautious, I felt comfortable enough to walk the gardens among others without a mask. The paths/garden is spacious enough that you can either wait for others to pass or walk past them. Tips for first time visitors: 1. Check the online calendar to see what is in bloom. Enjoy the blooms! 2. The path into the gardens is not paved, it's gravel. 3 Wear comfortable shoes, the gardens are not paved like say....the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. 4. This is a hidden gem just outside of ATL - Although the traffic is ATL will have you mad on your way to Gibbs the sights of these gardens will have you in a relaxed state of mind. Lovely for an afternoon stroll through large landscaped gardens. Flowers in bloom depending on the season. Daffodils and tulips in spring months. Roses and water lilies (imported and planted anew each year) in the summer. Fall flowers each autumn. Small sandwich shop on the grounds with both outdoor and tent-covered eating spaces.
