This has been my 2nd visit to Gibraltar Auto repair. I was pleased at how owner Steve called me at work to tell me what was wrong with my car. Vibrating and making a loud noise on front end. He diagnosed and repaired (rear rotors and away link bars) and also told me I'd need motor mount repaired soon as it had a small crack but not immediately urgent.. My 2nd visit was to correct a bad front brake pad replacement. I don't have time to take my car to garage due to.work and now increased demands at home bcuz I take care of my mom. Well i unfortunately allowed a friend who said he could replace.them...big big mistake!!! As soon as I started driving the car 2 days later. I heard and felt the right front brake pad making a loud grating noise. I contacted person and they made adjustment. Seemed ok until I drove back home that same day. Stepped on brakes quick and hard to avoid someone from ramming into me and again the noise was back. I called Steve at gibraltar the next day and brought my car in. The brake pads were installed completely wrong. He called me once checking and told me they were done completely wrong. I knew it! And thank God he removed and had to reinstall brake pads. He charged me minimal fee for new hardware kit to install brakes again. And asked me if this guy had done anything else so he could double check. Steve shows real concern and does excellent work..most importantly I've never trusted most mechanics, but I trust the work he and his team do. Thank you Steve. I was so scared to drive my car when I knew brakes weren't right, but came into NYC today with no problem...smooth ride. No harsh sounds anymore. Great trustworthy Mechanic!!!! I bought a 2008 Ford Taurus from a Kia dealer in Freehold to drive during our stays in NJ, though our primary residence is in WA state. We left a few days later and things seemed pretty good except we noticed the car bucking a couple of times, and mpg' were only 14 or so. I returned it to the dealership when we next came back because the problems were worse, but the mechanic said the test drive was ok and they didn't see a problem. My wife and I began investigating lemon laws in N J, as the car, though drive able, was increasingly seeming like a total bust. I wondered if the bucking, which was violent and happening at around 52 mph intermittently, might be a transmission problem. I have some fear of big, national brands of transmissions, and the Ford dealership wanted close to $200 just to look at it. I saw Gibraltars website offering FREE assessment of the transmission. Steve hooked us up and assured us it was NOT a transmission problem. He seemed like a true "car guy" and while the test drive was negative, he encouraged us to leave it with them so they could drive it again, strongly believing this was an electrical problem. On their 3rd test drive it bucked and stuttered violently and they narrowed the problem to faulty ignition coils. Had they replaced all plugs and coils this could have been close to 2 grand, but they bet on 2 coils and they got it right. My "lemon" is no longer bucking, I'm getting 26 mpg's, and I have renewed hope in this car renewed faith that some companies are truly interested in making customers for life by giving great service from knowledgeable people while doing the work you need and not the work that generates the highest bill. read more

I don't post to yelp often but I thought it was important to share my review of Gibraltar Auto Repair. I have used Gibraltar every time I've encountered Transmission issues with any of my vehicles. Earlier this year I had my 2009 Nissan Altima with another mechanic and they reported that I had a transmission problem and it would cost ~$2,500 to repair with 1 month guarantee on a rebuild or $3,500 if I wanted a year warranty. I had the care towed to Gibraltar and Steve and team took a week to do diagnostics and they found that the issue was related to some old plugs and some tuning. I was charged approximately 1/10th the price of what I was quoted from the other mechanic. It's been running well so far for at least 3 months!! Originally, I found Gibraltar because I had Nissan Pathfinder which had problems shifting between 1st & 2nd gear and later from 2nd to 3rd gear. I called Gibraltar and Steve the owner came over and picked up my pathfinder on his way to work the next day. It took a week but they figured out the problem and the car ran for another 2 years without any transmission issues. I can totally attest that the team at Gibraltar does excellent work and Steve is as honest as they come. Steve has at times made recommendations where I could save money on repairs. You don't get that with a lot of mechanics and you won't regret taking your car there. I am on car #4 which I have taken to him for servicing and I haven't had any regrets. read more

This place is the best I have ever been to! I was told that my car needed a new transmission at Aamco of Matawan on Rt. 34. I didn't believe this because my car was fine prior to this and the complaint I originally came there for was not for the transmission at all. They handed me an outrageous quote for over $5000 to rebuild my existing transmission! I was not going to have them fix my transmission when I could order a rebuilt transmission on any reputable website and pay only 550.00 with a three year warranty. Anyhow, I took the car to Gibraltar and they found out that everything under my hood was loosened by Aamco of Matawan. On top of that, I found out that I didn't need a new transmission. Gibraltar Transmissions had the owner and his technicians take the car for drives to see what was wrong. The car was thoroughly checked over by at least 3 qualified technicians on the lift and they agreed that the engine mount was done incorrectly by Aamco. The rubber piece installed by Aamco was not the right one for my car, and Gibraltar was able to improvise and make a new piece for my mount. The problem of noise with the car went away and I didn't need a new transmission. The bill for Gibraltar was $187. The quote from Aamco for a trans I didn't need was $5000. These guys at Gibraltar were honest and very helpful. There are still some good people in this world. I will definitely come back to Gibraltar for all my car's needs! read more

Most outstanding customer service and automotive service in 20 years. The engine light icon flicked on. I'm a Nurse Practitioner, who makes home visits. I cannot put off dealing with an unknown regarding my car. I called 4 auto places and no one could schedule an appointment for 2+ days and I was to be charged an initial $115.00 by all businesses for a computer to run a 45 sec diagnostic. The 5th call was to Gibraltar Automotive Service. Called Gibraltar because of all the positive reviews on Yelp. Steve, the owner, answered the phone. I explained my car's issue. WITH NO HESITATION Steve said to bring the car in today when I could get there and he would determine the problem AT NO CHARGE. I arrived 30 minutes later. The receptionist and Steve, very friendly, congenial people, greeted me. Steve immediately dealt with the car. And there were other customers waiting so it's not like they weren't busy. Steve identified the problem, pulled the car into the bay to further evaluate the problem. There was a loose cap not fastened properly from a recent oil change performed at Tire World. Steve got the car in, diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Total time 20 minutes max and NO CHARGE! For those of us who are older and remember the days of REAL car mechanics and REAL customer service, Gibraltar Automotive is the absolute best!!! read more

About almost two years ago I had somehow or someone had damaged my oil pan on my car. I got worried as this was needed to be fixed quick. I was quoted a thousand + from name brand repair shops all the way to the lexus dealership. I went to google to search for another opinion and found Steve at Gibraltar. He told me to bring my car in and fixed it for under $200. I have since traded that car and bought a brand new vehicle but I still will never forget the honesty and the headache he saved me. Even though I get routine maintenance covered under the dealer, I still rather pay and give Steve the business. Judging from reading other reviews, I see many people have the same feeling I do. In an industry where 90% of people get taken advantage of and lied to for a quick dollar, I can assure you this does not happen here. I dont understand when these other so called shops will get it that if you do people right, they will return instead of trying to screw them for money right off the bat. For anyone reading this, I work in Wall Township and pass over 100+ shops but I still do the 40 minute commute to get an oil change for my new vehicle at Gibraltar because I remember what Steve did for me almost two years back. read more

I have been bringing all my vehicles here for over 10 years. Steve has always been professional and honest. Over the years, Russ (and Clint) have worked tirelessly on all sorts of issues with my 2001 Excursion. They have tracked down and fixed steering 'noises', replaced fuel filter, exhaust system, driveshaft, O2 sensors, brake components, and tons of other troubleshooting. Most recently, an electrical draw from the 'GEM module' was causing a battery drain and serious starting issues. They tracked down the problem. Because of them, this 19 year old truck has 200k miles and runs almost like new! My son's Ford Escape needed a transmission just after the warranty expired (no love to Ford). So far, it has made three trips back and forth to Arizona and about 30K miles with no issues whatsoever. My wife's Ford Flex recently had an O2 sensor issue. (After 3 weeks at the dealer troubleshooting another issue as well as this, they suggested that I make this fix myself, instead of replacing it like I asked.) So, off to Gibraltar I went. My odyssey began at Nissan when they told me my 6 year old car needed a new transmission. I had one instance of the car not being able to go pass 20 miles per hour while pressing on the accelerator. Imagine my shock and despair, I love this car and I was not ready to part with it or pay $3,500 for a new transmission. Nissan was willing to buy it from me for 3000 after I put in a new transmissio. Excuse me? I don't know about you, but this didn't sound like a good deal to me, at all. To make a long story short my husband found Gibraltar Transmissions looking online. I brought my car in to Gibraltar that same day, Steve the owner took care of me immediately, took me out for a test drive while he diagnosed what was wrong with the car. It turned out that it only needed a part that cost around $70 and my car was good as new. I can't say enough good things about this man and his shop, the honesty and dedication to excellence is unmatched. Just want to say thank you to Steve and his staff. Being that I live in the Bronx NY and was interested in buying a vehicle from a dealer in New Jersey, I called Gibraltar Transmission and asked if they would give the vehicle a "pre purchase inspection". I spoke to "CC" on the phone who informed me for a small fee Steve would check the vehicle out for me. The dealer agreed to drop off the car to Steve "dealer was in the same town"and Steve called me back a short time later with the news that the vehicle was in pretty bad shape. Talking to Steve for about 10 mins I agreed that it was going to cost way more money then I wanted to add in repairs. Easily thousandsssss! I understand when you buy a used car your going to put money into it but this was way too much. Before hanging up, Steve said if you ever need questions answered feel free to call him. Steve, the owner at Gibraltar Transmissions really makes customers and potential customers feel comfortable. I contacted him after an unpleasant experience at the AAMCO nearby. Steve never actually did business with me, but explained things to me that the AAMCO failed to do, and confirmed for me the price range of the work that was done, showing me that the AAMCO did not rip me off, but simply had bad "bedside manners," and questionable legal standing. In the future, while I strongly hope my car will never need that kind of maintenance again, Steve has my business and my referrals (note: he does more than just transmissions too!). I strongly encourage Steve's customers to write Yelp and Google reviews for this business, so that Gibraltar Transmissions will have more online visibility than other places in this area. Back in August 2022 I began to experience a hesitation/lurching during acceleration. I have a 2012 Mazda 6. The condition would present itself along with a flashing drive light "D" on dash. I took my car to three mechanics who did various things and changed some sensors etc which did not solve the problem but did cost me a good amount of money. Transmission flush, cleaning of throttle body, MAF, MAP,EGR replacement, O2, all kinds of filters etc. - NONE WORKED and the costs added up! I then searched and read reviews and found Gibraltar/Steven right before the new years. I finally got the car to Steven's shop and what impressed me the most is Steven's attitude towards fixing the issues. He loves to solve the difficult problems! His mechanics are top notch and I have not seen better diagnostics work done anywhere else! Do yourself a favor and save money - go to Gibraltar. Great Team indeed !! Steve, you are lucky to have employees like Cadian[CC] and Russihon. I came in late last evening wanting an exhaust related service. I got a quick estimate. My son had to leave NJ for Boston by 2PM today...the issue was that the resonator had be procured from Paramus through Edison, and would reach East Brunswick by 1:30PM earliest. When they heard of my need, Cadian and Russihon went out of their way to help arrange for an interception of the delivery, so that it would reach Gibraltar by 11:30 AM. I reached Gibraltar at 11:30 AM, and immediately my car was taken in, and in an hours time, I was out of there...my son left for Boston at 2PM per his plan. For any leader, his team is the most critical asset... Although I could not meet Steve as he was on medical leave this week, his team fulfilled his ideal to provide the best service !!...what a wonderful team... I have not seen such exemplary customer service in the last two decades !! read more

A couple of months back, my wife's muffler was bouncing, so I took it to the dealer. Initially, they told me I needed new brackets, at a cost of over $300 for parts alone. When they looked at the car more thoroughly, they claimed the entire exhaust system was rusted and rotting, and we'd need to replace the muffler and the system for around $1800-1900. I googled local mechanics, and Gibraltar had the best reviews, so I gave Steve a call. He took the car in, and said that there was nothing wrong with the exhaust system. All the car needed was new muffler brackets, and definitely not for the dealer's price. Steve temporarily attached the muffler so we could still drive the car until the parts came in, then when we brought it back, he completed the job for less than $100! I was very impressed, and would definitely do business with Gibraltar again! read more

My wife's car made a strange noise when the engine was idling and we took it to the dealership twice and they told us that everything is normal and do not worry. Finally we took at to Gibraltar ( Steve worked on my car several times and I was always happy with his service). Steve checked it and after a few minutes he told me that it is the timing chain and check it ,maybe has a recall and the dealer will fix it for free.He was right they did fix it for free. Steve saved me over a $ 1000 in repairs . That is one of the reason that we take our cars to him, he is not just knowledgeable but honest too. He crew is very good too. Unfortunately I do not know their names ( I think Russ and John and another two young guys). This is the first time I have needed a serious car repair in my life. I recently graduated college, drive a 2007 SUV with 150k miles, and the hybrid system and vehicle control lights came on. I got the car towed to my dealership and they suggested repairs that were basically the blue book value of my car. I reached out to Steven and had him tow my car to his garage. After receiving my car and looking through it he called me back and told me what needed to be done. He had informed me that the dealership was really trying to add on unnecessary work.
