Never again shopping at a chain halloween costume store, Gibson Costume Shop is the way to go! I stopped by this store a day before Halloween in search for the perfect wig for my husband's Halloween costume. It seems that Joe Exotic (Tiger King) was a popular costume this year and they were out of blonde molettes. One of the staff members working at the store was super helpful and found a long blonde wig that I could trim and convert into a molette. The wig was around $25 which I thought was a super competitive price compared to other online stores. The store is pretty big with multiple rooms filled with costumes for all ages. The have a wide selection of costumes, accessories, wigs, makeup and much more! I believe they also have costumes for rent, but I am not sure if they are offering that service during covid. Definitely check out this store and support local next time you need a costume for a party or event. read more

I am shocked reading the reviews below because I had a fantastic experience. I love that it's a local shop and it is not a chain. They have quite the selection! I came in last minute with a random costume idea (see photo- Quacking The Case) and they actually had everything I was in need of. Sherlock Holmes hat, Giant Magnifying glass, Pipe and Duck Bills! The only con I experienced was the cost. It was a little more pricy than the listed two $$. I was willing to pay due to time constraints and I know small businesses have to survive. Gibson has a HUGE variety of costumes both for rent and to sell. If you can dream it up, they can make it happen. This is not a chain pop-up costume shop, but a long standing, San Antonio owned business. In my experience, they have a large variety with varying price points. If you want a basic costume that you can find elsewhere, they have that too, but if you want an extravagant rental or a vintage costume design, you will find it here. It's conveniently located close to downtown with extended hours during Halloween (open until 7:30pm). With all that said, I was slightly disappointed on my most recent visit. The sales lady was rude when I asked her to see the accessories that went with the costume I had already decided on. She told me it was "their policy" to only pull them if I bought the costume. However, I didn't want to purchase the costume if the accessories didn't live up to the printed picture. I asked to speak with the manager who I was told was upstairs (did I mention this place has TWO WHOLE STORIES?!?). I went upstairs and asked the manager the exact same question with a much different response. She pulled the accessories for me to see, but explained I couldn't try them on (it's a headpiece so I understand the sanitation aspect). The sales lady was quick to make a not-so-nice face and find her way back downstairs. It's pretty sad that the manager didn't seem to know about this "policy". Can't wait to show off my new purchase on Halloween. This place is great, just wish they had better representation! read more

Headed for the Sherwood Forest Flaire this weekend and stopped at the costume shop to pick out a costume for the event. So I picked out the wenches costume as it was light and not heavy as the temperature was to reach a high of 90. What is really great about this costume shop is the service as Victoria helped me with buttons and corsets and hats and hoods then finally I was really happy with my costume. Victoria is friendly and supportive when choosing a costume. Really support this costume shop as the manager is concerned for the traditional industry of renting costume face to face then on multi media sales online. I was looking for a costume for my 5 year old grandson to wear at his birthday party. Since it was last minute, online was not an option. I called first and the person took there time to help me. Wow! We entered the store 15 minutes prior to closing knowing exactly what we needed and found it before anyone greeted us. Once a female employee saw us, she asked what we were looking for, we told her we found what we needed and she stated, "Well we close in 5 minutes but I guess you can browse." Rip offfffffff! I would rather dump my ethical standards and order my next costume from Trump.com, than give one cent to the lazy, price gouging people at Gibson Costume. One day they will rent you a helmet by itself, while the next day they try to deter you from renting (same helmet) by insisting that you must rent all pieces of costume together, all because they don't want to get out from behind the counter to go open upstairs. It was our first time there, we scanned around the first floor & and noticed there was a 2nd so we were about to head up, because there was no sign saying it was closed, & the lady just says out loud "upstairs closed" like okay cool no prob so we made our way back down the few steps we took & saw some cute little costumes we were interested in for our kids. We started looking at those then the lady comes from another room & was like "those are not for y'all, they're for kids" & I responded "yes we have some kids we are looking for costumes too" & she was like "okay but yeah that's for kids" & proceeded to take it out of the hands of my friend, who is African American if I have to add because the way she just did it was just rude, & said "let me just hang it up the right way." Party City who? With this locally owned gem in our city, why would I ever approach the atrocious situation that is any big box costume store during a holiday season? Besides, I actually quite hate dressing up for themed parties, unless it has anything to do with Christmas, then I'm TOTALLY on board. I was on the hunt for a an elf costume and my eyes immediately feasted upon racks on racks of elf costumes! Neatly organized, freshly pressed, and ready-to-wear outfits line the walls of the store, with supplemental items like wigs, socks, shoes, etc on shelves. I was so shocked that they had so many Holiday costumes available within the first week of November, from Santa suits, to Santa's little helper ensembles, to reindeer costumes - they are really well-equipped for your Christmas dress up needs. I'll admit, it gives me slight heeby jeebys to share clothes with strangers, and certain outfits are definitely more worn than others, but overall the store is extremely clean and you can be positive that they take good care of their items. You'll pay a deposit along with the rental fee, which you'll get back once you return the outfit in it's entirety, but you don't have to worry about cleaning it, they do that! I find it hilarious that they close at 7:00 pm the night before Halloween, the fitting room closes at 6:45 pm, and the costume area upstairs closes even earlier because the woman "doesn't like to drive at night". They constantly repeat that they close at 7:00 and they tell you to come back at 9:00am on Halloween as if I'm shopping the night before just for kicks and I have plenty time to come back the day of Halloween. Ok I didn't actually go here to look for a costume, I went to pick up some face paints. However since this was my first time in the store, I looked around to see what they had to offer. Let me just say...... if you are looking for that Elvis get-up, to become one of the Storm Troopers from Star wars, don the hair of Lady Godiva.... then Gibson's is the shop for you! Not only do they sell every costume imaginable, but you can rent quit a few to. One thing I found VERY pleasing is they do allow you to try on the costume before you walk out the door with it. Oh and don't forget the accessories! They have tons of those too! (tiaras, gloves, ball and chains, hook noses, fake ears, wigs.... you name it they got it!) I will defiantly be going back! If I could give this place negative stars I would. Renting a costume here was a nightmare. From the very beginning the experience was less than pleasant. The rental process was not ideal but ultimately it was what I settled for. I was specifically told that I was ONLY allowed to try on 3 dresses so I should "choose" wisely. I was honestly shocked that a business would limit their customers rather help them. I was once again limited and threatened with a fine after renting a dress. At the time of the rental it was explained that the rental was good for 3 days. I picked up my dress on Friday afternoon, a few hours before the event I was wearing it to. The very next day I received a call from a more than rude employee at the store telling me that the rental was due in before close at 5pm. I had barely had the dress for a little over 24 hours and was not home at the time of the call. I asked if I could take it in the next day but was told that they were closed on Sunday and I could return it on Monday but I would have to pay a fee. I asked if I could have an extension or if an exception could be made due to the fact that I had only had the dress for one day but was rudely told no. I asked how much a late fee would be and was told it was the entire cost of the dress! Which was not cheap. Everything that the associate rudely told me on the phone did not sound right since it contradicted what I was told at the time of the rental. I requested to speak to a manager and again was told no. I asked again and even far more rudely was told that I could either return the dress now or pay a fee. I asked a third time for a manager and was told that I could not talk to her because she was not there. I could not believe the lack of professionalism from an employee over the phone. When I asked if I could have the cellphone of the manager so I could speak to her I was immediately told NO and then was hanged up on! I called right back and requested and explanation for being hung up on and for the employees name. Again more no's and was hung up on a second time. I visited the store to return the dress and speak to someone in person was yelled at by the female I had spoken to in the phone. I questioned her lack of professionalism and was yelled out of the store. All of this in front of other customers. The employee had no shame. I am still waiting to hear from the manager as my calls continue to be ignored and I am afraid for my safety if I ever visit that establishment again. Worst experience ever! read more

A company I used to work for had a pirate-themed costume party and Gibson's more than accomodated the majority of the people going. Disgusting place! Makeup was priced higher than usual And when I paid for an overpriced foundation I opened it and found out it had spoiled!! No one purchases enough of their makeup so they just let it sit there and expire. I opened up a package to find it completely dried up with mold spots. And of course they don't take returns, exchanges, or refunds. I regrettably had to visit this store to buy a wig as a present for a young girl. The customer service was beyond poor from the moment I stepped in. The woman showed absolutely no interest in working there.
