Cherry's Costumes Galore has always been a well kept secret on the North side of SA... a little building on Blanco just north of 410... but ~now~ it's even more hidden in it's ~new~ spot! You can find Cherry's located on N. Broadway a mile or so north of 410 in a shopping center... north side of the center facing the street and up the stairs. They have way more room for all their costumes and accessories... it's all spread out! They are excited with the expansion and hope that you will come in to see them! I was introduced to Cherry at an event we were both at several years ago. We have common friends. Since then, I have stopped at her store every so often to see how she is doing. If anyone knew Cherry, they would understand that she is getting older with family and health issues... and she is/was not running a typical run of the mill business. If you were in a shop alone working and sewing inventory, you might understand her wanting appointments instead of walk-ins. Cherry now is enjoying her retirement while her son Christian is taking charge and holding up the reins to carry on! Cherry's Costumes Galore does have a lot of older vintage costumes they carefully restore. It's amazing to have someone who loves textiles so much to take on this challenge! I didn't get a chance to look at everything but having this huge building, it sure does help you get a chance to see more of what there is to choose from. Let Christian or Amanda help you out! Customer service was unbeatable, they had something perfect for me in what I was looking for and in my size, and it was just an amazing experience for the first time costume store experience. This staff and the place is absolutely amazing! I came by looking for a Great Gatsby themed costume for a charity gala. This was last minute, two hours before the event. The staff took the time to allow me to try several dresses. To my surprise they also paired a feather boa, headdress, pearl necklace/bracelet, satin gloves, shoes, and even a purse. This was an unbelievable deal!!!! Also this saves time visiting several places for all the necessary items. The greatest part of all is that the costumes aren't cheesy like traditional party/costume stores. They have taken the time to curate an authentic selection of items. I'm baffled by these reviews low star reviews. And for full disclosure, Cherry's Costumes was very accommodating on working with me to provide costumes for a Yelp event, but I have shopped with them many times over the years and this review reflects a synopsis of all my experiences there. In fact, the only reason I went to Cherry's to ask about costumes for my 80's Prom is because I have loved using them for costumes in the past. It's owned by Cherry, a sweet lady who has been nothing but accommodating to me over the years. And trust me, I rent a lot of costumes! ha! No matter what type of wacky idea I have she either finds the costume or helps me come up with ideas to complete the look. If you are shopping during off times of year (meaning not Halloween) your selection will be great. And they make costumes all the time to keep up with what's current and happening. And if they don't have it and you give them enough time you can get it made (budget depending) or they'll make calls to other shops around town to help you find something to suit your needs. I can't say enough for how much I love this place. I definitely recommend you try them out next time you're in need of a great costume! read more

Our son wanted to be Mark Twain for his elementary school wax museum showcase, we called but as it was 15 minutes to closing we weren't able to stop by. Christian was very helpful and guaranteed us that they would definitely accommodate us the next day. Due to my hectic work day we weren't able to get there until 4:30 but that didn't stop Cherry herself from putting together a fantastic ensemble & she even lent us her bottle of spirit gum to apply his mustache! We left feeling totally satisfied & confident. Needless to say his costume was a big hit & his presentation was awesome. Everyone loved it! A great big THANK YOU to Cherry & Christian, you guys are great - we will be back! Extremely upset! Went in for a costume for a children's birthday party. First off the door was locked during business hours and you have to call for someone to open the door. The individual that opened the door was Cherry herself. She wasn't able to find the costume I was requesting stating that her son would need to retrieve it for me. She asked me to come back the following day. She stated that they were open until 5 the following day, which didn't work for me due to work, she said we could schedule an appointment for 6:30PM after I got out of work. I thought great, how accommodating! So, next day I leave work a little early, fight the traffic and get to the shop a little before 6:30PM. NO ONE was there, I called and left a message, I waited thinking that maybe they're just running late. Nothing! She had even gotten my phone number the day before so there's no excuse. Total waste of my time and very unprofessional. I do not recommend this place. Had I known this was the type of business they run, I would've tried another business when I had the time, now I have to scramble to find a costume for my friend's child's bday party. When I was 16, I was diagnosed with cancer. Ended up going through 9 months of chemotherapy. I lost all my hair because of that. About a week later after my hair fell out, I received a box on my front porch. Cherry's Costumes Galore was the name on the return address. Cherry and her son Christian, the two people that run the store, put a box together full of wigs and some other fun things. The box had a variety of different wigs. Some for fun, and one that matched my hair closely. Beyond the compassion and the want to help people. They take their work very seriously. Cherry hand makes a lot of the costumes. Christian is very knowledgeable when it comes to history. He knows what details were big in what era. Christian is a stickler for details, he can give you a reason why certain costumes have certain pieces, etc. The costume shop will bend over backwards for you. If you can't pick the costume up or drop it off, sure there's a fee, but they'll help you out if need be. Also, I've heard stories from so many schools that have won competitions just based on the costumes they were wearing. Yeah, this store is top notch. They do their best and no less. Their job is take an amateur and make them professional. read more

I would love to be able to tell you more about this costume shop, unfortunately the only contact I've ever had was via phone on a Saturday- where a friendly gentleman let me know we could drop by at any time during your business hours. That very next week I called on various days and no one answered, I left a message - never got a call back, I emailed, still no reply. A friend of ours who also needed to rent a costume (we were to attend same wedding) dropped by twice weeks earlier, and the doors were locked, when they called to see if someone was there to unlock, no one answered - so they gave up on the costume shop. I don't know if there are any unforeseen issues that perhaps isn't allowing the owners to be readily available, who knows, but as far as costume shops, you might need to find one where you can get a hold of someone. read more

I can say this for Cherry's....it's interesting. The shop is really small and....musky. Musky is a good word. The costumes are a bit older but they do make costumes that are relative to the times. I noticed the last time I was in there that they made a Joker costume from the "Dark Knight". The employees help out a lot when it comes to finding a costume that will fit you and suit your needs. Be warned that when it comes close to Halloween the store gets pretty busy so you may want to start looking there about a month before Halloween at least. I've been to this place before. It's very nice. It's not your run-of-the-mill costume store and I like that. I took some time to talk to the owner, who is very sweet btw, and she explained how she cares for and collects each costume. I prefer her hands on approach. If you're willing to take some time and maybe set something up I suggest you do that. If you want "fast food" costumes (and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that) you may want to stick with Party City. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. My husband went in for costumes for him and I. The person helping him gave him a man's shirt and pants after even after he said one of the costumes was for a woman. He came back with a smaller shirt and assured him the pants were for women. Those pants were definitely not cut for a woman. My husband got home and looked through the costumes more closely. There were broken sunglasses, one of the belts didn't have a buckle, and my husband's shirt had a stain on it. I wish I had been there I would not have let my husband pay money to rent this crap! I'm baffled by the good reviews I don't understand how a place like this stays in business! read more

First off, like others have mentioned, the door is locked even during business hours. You have to call to get them to let you in. I've been looking all over town trying to find a particular wig. This was my last effort to not buy one online. I called and asked if they had what I was looking for and she said they did. I drove all the way from the other side of town just to find out that for one, the wig was frizzy and messy, and two that they don't do sales only rentals. Would have been nice to know. I would have given this 2 stars but they get 3 for at least offering to order a wig for me. I declined on that though because the wig she showed me was nothing like the one described on ths phone. Cherry's Costumes Galore is a great place for school play costumes. She gets us what we need and if she can't find it, she even offers to deliver it to us 2 hours away. They are in a new location, bigger and spacious. Prices are good for what you get. She even loans us props, wigs, and accessories if needed. Great and friendly people. I have no complaints. Since it is only her and her son, it may be why they have to lock the doors when both have to step away. Reason I always call and make an appointment. You have to see this place to believe it. These are not Wal-Mart costumes. They have vintage clothes and awesome character costumes. The folks there are amazing and helped us with the entire outfit (all for one low low price). There were no add ons and upcharges. Makes me want to have a costume party. Go check them out! read more
