I'm sorry to say our experience with Whitehall was not a good one. First, the facility is dated and…read moreis in desperate need of repairs to the walls, and it needs to be painted. I only mention this since it's the first impression you get when you go into the facility. The good: the people working there in skilled nursing, physical, and occupational therapy seem to truly care about the patients. There are two main problems: (1) the food is awful, and (2) they don't have enough staff to support the patients. We were there with an older relative who had a knee replacement. She was not able to, or supposed to get up on her own and even needed help to go into the restroom. While we were there the first day, she hit the call button and we waited so long for someone to come to help her, she almost soiled herself. I had to go out of the room and find someone who could assist. The first night she was there, again she hit the call button for restroom assistance. Again, she waited to the point where she got up herself. Of course, someone one day out of knee surgery shouldn't do that, but it was that or soil herself so she got up. She made it to the restroom before she fell, requiring a trip to the ER. The next day, we talked to one of the therapists who explained they had someone call in sick the day before, requiring the facility to move someone off of our floor to a different one. This left her the only person monitoring the patients on our floor. They couldn't keep up with the patients. The next day, we spoke with a manager who contradicted the aide saying she didn't know why we were told they were short staffed and said they weren't. That was when I realized we couldn't rely on them to take care of her and decided she should be moved back to her assisted living facility and hire skilled nursing and physical therapy. I cannot in good conscience recommend Whitehall. I see similar comments in some of the other reviews, which I should have read before placing her there. I am terribly disappointed and even though moving her and hiring the help ourselves was much more expensive, I couldn't keep her in a facility where I couldn't count on the care. Oh - I gave them three stars rather than one or two because of the quality of the therapists. If they weren't good, my rating would have been much lower. Also, I see enough pictures of the facility posted that I didn't think I needed to take any. The ones posted by reviewers are pretty spot on.

After our mom fell, we knew that she would need nursing care but we also knew she did not want to live in a nursing home. Caring.com put Harbor House in touch with me and from the moment I spoke with Savannah, the executive director, I knew this place was special. Savannah actually did the assessment at the big, fancy, expensive nursing home and confirmed what I already suspected. We moved her out of there and Savannah actually drove out there and helped me move her stuff and my mom (I was visiting mom out of town). Over the next few days, I got a very up-close look at Harbor House and how the staff interacts with their residents. I popped in at unexpected times and walked through the adjacent buildings. I never saw a deviation from the excellence of care I saw the first time - not even once. I never saw residents mistreated or spoken to condescendingly, like I did at the other place. The caregivers are amazing women. Sam, Becky, Brittany, are really hands on nurses. Sam spent tons of time with me, discussing my mother's medications. The doctors call you and I spoke with Dr. Ernst about my mom for an hour! I couldn't even get the doctor at the big, fancy place to return my call! The place is small and it's warm and cozy - like a previous commenter said, it's not like an institution at all. It's like a home. My mom has an adorable sunny, private room with her own bathroom. She's always got someone there to help her. All I can say about this place except is that it's exceptional. I have learned that big, fancy nursing homes are usually understaffed and can't manage the needs of their patients. This place CARES for their patients. I don't need crystal chandeliers and big lobbies. I need individualized care with people who treat the elderly like the human beings they are. Harbor House does this. My aging parents moved here in 2014, and my dad is still there...at 94 and counting! They both…read morearrived with "mild cognitive deficits of the Alzheimer's type." Because the care and programming and staff are so family- and patient-centered, my brothers and sister and I have a kind of peace of mind and heart we never thought possible. All I can say is thank heavens they bought long-term care insurance (with no cap!) back in the late '90s. After mom passed in 2016, dad ultimately moved to the "Renaissance Care" floor, where every possible need he has is met. We even transferred his supplementary health insurance coverage plan to the Sunrise Advantage Plan, as it's far less costly than BCBS, and his care is even more comprehensive, with visiting providers instead of the disruption of him having to go to them, which is quite difficult in his current confused state. We were worried they wouldn't like the food, but they loved it from the start! I think the food at a place like this serves as a barometer for their feelings about being there, and from the start, although a bit bumpy at first (nobody wants to move away from home), they settled in nicely and made friends. I would highly recommend Sunrise to anyone considering assisted living.

In those 21 days she was showered ONCE and that was in the last day and ONLY after my cousin complained to the head of the operation. They helped brush her teeth ONE TIME and one time only. My aunt came home with bruises and no explanation as to how she received them. While I was visiting, I called the nurse to question them on why my aunts foot was so swollen it was cracking, and in the 2 hours I was there NO ONE came to her room. Then today, A MONTH after she has been home, they received a bill. Not only was my aunt neglected but then they have the nerve to try to scheme additional moneys from them. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE IF YOU CARE FOR THEIR SAFETY!!!!!!
