Very happy place to stop by for drink or food. There are picnic tables in the parking lot that allow you to look over the water while you eat. The service is very quick and efficient with a lot of people swarming the tables keeping the drinks toped off and clear the tables. Very generous portions of food. This is a pub and coffee house on Achill Island. We only went into the coffee house. Essentially this part of County Mayo easily meets the definition of being in the middle of nowhere. I'd say it's the middle of nowhere and another 20 miles journey after that. There's something about this little west of Ireland island, with its little population (about 2,500 souls) its little land-bridge to get on/off the island, its cliffs, its peat bogs, its beaches and the overwhelming, raging Atlantic Ocean that takes us back here over and over again. People have lived here for at least 5,000 years. Stunning scenery, crystal clear water, fresh air and raw, wild nature apart it has practically nothing of comfort to offer visitors, you'd be hard pushed even to find a public toilet particularly in winter: stark, wild, beauty bathed in a peat perfumed wind-song that never whispers, with its own microclimate. As we drove over the single desolate bridge onto the island the icy blue skies turned to heavily pregnant grey clouds, the already cold 6 degrees centigrade on the dashboard clock dropped a notch then quickly two notches and a bright afternoon suddenly dimmed. Outside the car the wind chill awaited. Everybody Hurts was on the radio. Then when the rain waters broke the mist closed further in. By this time we were parked right beside a beach with the fierce Atlantic just 30 feet away and out we got for a bracing walk. The north west wind had a different idea and our walk was more of a struggle to stay upright and the rain was merciless. When we returned from our endeavours we needed to find a toilet, so we drove to a nearby shop that didn't have one and they suggested we go along the road and as advised we found this place. It was an oasis to thaw out. No signs saying toilets are for customers only. The cappuccinos were exquisite and to our surprise and sheer delight they had gin & lemon cheesecake - yes gin & lemon. And they didn't stint on the gin and the lemon zinged. And they didn't stint on food & drink portions either. The cheesecake had sliced lemon on top which was bitter so here's a tip for them; next time instead of just putting sliced lemon on top of the cheesecake boil up a simple sugar syrup (white sugar & water) simmer the sliced lemon gently just for a few minutes and cool. Then put the poached lemon slice on top. The staff were very friendly, the free WiFi fast and here's the thing that the Irish have in spades - you strike up a conversation with a total stranger and it's as if you've known each other forever. No doubt we will return and this coffee stop will be another reason to do so. read more

After a long drive I finnaly arrived to the gig! the launching of Des Cafferkey's CD. So, it is not only a bar, it has the Coffee Shop called "the last Drop" and of course a fantastic venue for irish trditional music as well as the irish language. Achill Island Has every year in the last week of july "Scoil Acla". The Gielty family has been keeping the tradition for many years of hosting many events and not only during the summer school, The Gielty s have a great list of great musicians on stage during the rest of the year. a magical place!!! that is the way i will describe this pub, the view to the ocean is so beautiful, is just in the right spot. food and drink is all you need to complete the treat, and that you will get it as well. Given the size of Achill Island, there is a really very impressive number of eateries but not a lot in the way of basic pub-grub affairs. Gielty's is one of the few where you can wander in, feeling scruffy and hungry form 2 days camping and feel immediately at home, warm and have a pint and a burger. ...which is exactly what we did; it was late and we were in a bit of a hurry as it was past juniors bed time (you are living dangerously with a tired and hungry 6 year old at the best of times), We explained to the waitress that we were under a bit of pressure, she said "no problem", took our order and promptly forgot us for the bones of an hour. I eventually went and got the drinks myself, I was unable to get to the kitchen but if I had been able to do so I would have cooked the burgers too. When the food eventually arrived it was actually very good (except for the onion rings - seriously, don't bother!). Maybe we got them on a bad day - it can happen, but they weren't busy so it was a bit frustrating. I'd go back though, the pint was good and the food was worth the trip - also, the view from the front door is spectacular. read more

Achil has a very limited selection of pubs, and Gielty's is a welcome sight. Arriving via the Atlantic drive, I was in the mood for fish and chips. I substituted coleslaw for chips and it was creamy and delicious. The mushy peas were nicely done as well. My fish, albeit fresh, was not fried well at all. Either the oil was too cold, or it wasn't cooked long enough. Very soggy and saturated with oil. Not the crunchy golden brown that I've come to love. Other orders that came out after looked good. I must have been the first of the day. Still, I would return and give it another go. read more

Best place in town for great hospitality, wonderful food and a perfect view. We had the steamed mussels, fresh seafood chowder, spicy wings and fries with melted cheese. We sat at the bar and shared these quick lunch bites while sipping on a draft beer and glass of wine. Staff was very helpful answer questions about the island and spots to visit. This is the ONLY restaurant open year round. Most of the other restaurants we tried were closed for the season. Stop here for lunch if you are visiting Achill Island and Keem Bay! read more

Not many people tell you about Achill Island, but it is everything you imagine the Irish coast to be. Ruins, Mountains, Cliffs, Rainbows, Sheep, Leprechauns. Well, sheep painted green. Gielty's Clew Bay sits right before the drive to Keel Beach, a must see in Ireland. This pub was open in the of season, small but very authentic. They had a good beer selection, great food, and a very nice staff. The owner, Glen, manned the bar. The view out the pub is REEEDICULOUS. Cliffs, Bright Blue Atlantic Ocean, Leprechauns. Ok, no leprechauns, but everyone wanted me to see one so I am sticking to my story. This is out of the way but I promise worth the drive if you are in combing glorious coastal nature, ancient ruins, beer and great service. read more

We stopped off at Gielty's Clew Bay for some lunch. We settled at a table in the bar after I got some menus from the bar. I went back up to the bar with the menus to order and was told to sit back at the table, someone would be over to take our order. We waited 15 mins for order to be taken, then we left. It wasn't busy with people. At one stage after being told to wait at our table, the man behind the bar spotted us, I looked expectantly at him to see if this would help with getting our order taken, but no joy. We then went to The Beehive up the road, where we were served immediately. read more

We stopped here for late lunch and stayed for about 2 hours. Great food. Two of us had excellent fish and chips while the other two of us had their creamy seafood chowder. Delicious Irish coffees and desserts also. Friendly staff and clean toilets! read more

Went in June 18 2015.. Chef very accommadating and suggested 4 veggie options ( I don't eat meat) that weren't on the menu.. It's a nice no nonsense pub with great food and a lovely waitress.. Wonderful view too read more
