Saw the manager puttering around wiping things down despite a 30 plus person line in the cold. Many customers left, including an elderly couple who appeared hypothermic. The weighing and measuring of ice cream is nuts. Sends the message that loyal patrons don't deserve the dignity of a fun ice cream experience. No trip to Maine would be complete without a stop at Gifford's Famous Ice Cream. Gifford's has been around since the 1800's and offers 100 different flavours of ice cream, sherbets, frozen yogurt and even sorbets. What started out as a home delivery milk and ice cream business in Connecticut (with a horse drawn wagon), has expanded into five family owned stands and trucks rolling in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Nowadays they buy their milk and fresh cream from local dairy farms and items like berries are all grown locally. A true farm-to-table or as they like to say "farm to spoon". The best/must try/end-all-be-all flavour is Mississippi Mud Pie. They start with coffee ice cream add crushed cream-filled chocolate cookies and chocolate-coated cookies. BoyHowdy! I remembers few years ago the rage was Blueberry Pancake, which unfortunately was discontinued. We tried their Maine Wild Blueberry, which or may not be a replacement to the Blueberry Pancake. No worries. The flavour stood tall. However, I can see how it is considered a "love it or leave it" option. We loved it. Some feel Gifford's a bit pricey, but you can also argue that quality ingredients and the phenomenal end product justifies the cost. This location does require attention to an understaff issue. Just as frustrating is the lack of knowledge and experience of the kids that are working. I wouldn't care except this caused an incredibly long wait that didn't need to be. On a positive note, Gifford's has deals in place making them the official ice cream of the New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics. To celebrate they've created two new flavours. Dough Your Job is Vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough, caramel footballs & fudge. This is my new number one! Sensational! Full Court Pretz is Vanilla ice cream and chocolate-coated pretzel balls, chocolate caramel cups with a caramel ripple. I didn't care for it at all. I think it's worth the experience to try Gifford's. You may even fall in love. It's local and established. They use natural ingredients. We noticed a change this season where it appears that employees are repeatedly weighing the portions. They put the ice cream on a napkin and scale and add or remove it tediously. For Maine, I'm quite suprised that there are places that stay open later than...8PM. This place is open till 10PM every night! From what I can tell, Mainers really enjoy their ice cream.
