The staff at Gig Harbor Eye Care are warm and engaging, and the space is clean and modern. Our annual exams always seem thorough and unrushed, and the results and recommendations are clearly explained following the exam. While frames can be expensive, they are high quality. Overall, I think this is the best eye care center in the area. Pro-Tip: Take advantage of the opportunity to test lenses before purchasing, as my husband had to return his lenses after a couple of weeks, because they were causing headaches and dizziness. read more

if you have a unique prescription, find another optometrist. I've stayed with GH Eye Care for years out of convenience but have never been satisfied. My prescription has always been "off", glasses had to be returned because they didn't know lens sizes, and my contact lens vision was just fair. fast forward to finding a new dr in town, and it's night and day. I have gone to a lot of places for my eye appointments in Washington from Seattle to Tacoma. However, Dr. David Shin's office is one to rave about; with its' newer state of the art technology and advanced tools for eyes, you can say that he is working with the best. You only get one set of eyes, so make sure you take care of them! We came in and were very impressed with how beautiful the office is, if you don't like the wait and pain of ugly doctor offices this place will change how you see all of that (excuse the pun). I liked the fact that the forms and checking in were hassle free. The doctor goes out of his way to make sure you are comfortable & answers every question thoroughly. I have been to GHEC twice--one for my annual check up, and a second appt for a weird allergic reaction I was having. The first check up was very thorough. They updated my prescription, recommended an eye care regimen to help with my allergies. Second appointment I was able to be seen on EXTREMELY short notice for some swelling and discomfort of the tissues surrounding my eyeball. Turned out to be a weird allergic reaction, but what they recommended took care of my problem. Back to my prescription--I ended up going to costco to update my glasses prescription. Costco is slower, and a lot more of a pain in the ass, but it was also cheaper too, and at this point in my life I'm not ready to pay for convenience...but I'm getting there. Someone in the optical department took the time to show me the lenses and go over the different lenses and coatings (I'm still new to corrective lenses, I don't understand a lot of this stuff). Even though I ended up not getting lenses here, I do appreciate the time they took with me. I would highly recommend this place for any and all eye care needs. read more

JUST WOW. Dr. Shin and HIS TEAM are AMAZING. I've battled with my contact lens for about 5 years now. I've been to several Optometrists, I've explained my eye and my issues but not one has "fixed" my eye. Dr. Shin actually takes the time to understand and correct the issues. They have STATE OF THE ART equipment and hey definitely know how to utilize and interpret the information at their office. I'm so glad I found an eye doctor for life. This rating is for the staff that answers the phones specifically. She mumbled when she answered the phone so I asked, "Hi, is this Gig Harbor Eye Care?" The reply was, "Well you called us." Very snarky, please ask you staff not to mumble when answering the phones and then turn around and act rudely to the customer. The staff here used to be much better. Very nice facility & nice front desk staff. They have lots of flashy testing equipment. However-- pretty long wait to see the doc, & once she came in it was rushed & not very much connection with her. I can't even recall her name. Exactly what my daughter's tests concluded, I'm not entirely sure as the doc rushed to telling me she needed lenses that are not covered by insurance. When I asked the cost, she shut my question down immediately & said to see the staff out front. After seeking other ophthalmologists' opinions, they felt I was being pushed by this office to buy a large profit item. read more

I have reached an age where the professionals I have trusted for years have retired. Finding an eye care professional I trust has been difficult. That is until yesterday. I received a comprehensive, initial examination, along with patient explanations of each piece of high-tech equipment. Their approach left me feeling informed, rather than patronized or demeaned. Although I looked at their selection of frames, I was able to leave without feeling any pressure to buy and was handed my prescription on the way out. The doctor discussed a supplement, but simply explained how to read the label information and offered suggestions with a recommendation that I check them out for myself. I am so happy with my visit here. My prescription is pretty high and I was tired of wearing my glasses because they were so heavy. I also hate wearing traditional contacts because my eyes get so dry at the end of the day. I thought those were my only two options besides lasik (which I would never do), but Dr. Shin informed me about a specialty contact that wouldn't irritate my eye at the end of the day. He made custom lenses for my eyes called Sclerals (sp?) and they feel amazing! There was a slight learning curve for me as to how to take them on and off, but Dr. Shin was so informative and patient with me and taught me how to put them on and take them off. I've never had a doctor go out of his way to find a solution that would fit my lifestyle. He has the latest technology and you can tell he is up-to-date on what's going on in his field. The other day my glasses broke and I was also due for a check up. So I went to Gig Harbor Eye Care where Dr. Shin was able to see me right away. The convenience of scheduling an appointment was very easy and convenient. When I arrived, I was greeted by the receptionist and filled out some paperwork and they also verified the insurance I had. The exam was very easy and the technology is state of the art. Dr. Shin definitely knows his stuff. He linked my eye health to my systemic health and encouraged me to seek out care with my PCP. I'm impressed to see Dr. Shin treats his patients as a whole. After I received my prescription, I was helped by his assistant in picking out a pair of glasses. She was nice and helpful giving me good advice on how to choose my frames. Overall the process was seamless and pleasant.
