I had a great annual checkup on July 30, 2021. I really liked my new doctor, Dr. Jung--he was thorough and explained everything to me clearly and completely. I recommend him and the staff with the highest possible ratings. I've been a Pacific NE Rye patient for about 17 years (my former wonderful doctor retired last December). Our experience with Pacific Northwest Eye Associates (PNEA) in Tacoma, WA, has been disappointing. My wife and I require cataract surgery. At 76, we take our eye health seriously. Before scheduling our first visit in December 2024, we carefully researched local cataract surgery options and Dr. Niraj Patel. We selected Dr. Patel based on his experience.The process to secure that initial appointment took two months. We believe Dr. Patel is a skilled ophthalmologist and surgeon. That said, we both felt pressured at the first exam with him to opt for the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), a $4,500 per-eye ($9,000 total) upgrade not covered by Medicare or our secondary insurance. The clinic prominently promotes this option, which likely benefits its revenue. Despite our optometrists advising against a replacement lens other than "standard," we briefly considered it due to the strong recommendation. This raises concerns about whether other elderly patients might feel similarly pressured. Anyone considering this clinic should thoroughly research the LAL option and discuss it with their optometrist or primary care provider before making a decision. After our exams, we met with the "scheduling coordinator" for Dr. Patel's surgeries. We were informed that due to a backlog, surgery dates would be significantly delayed. We accepted this reality and continued the process. However, communication with the clinic was frustratingly difficult. Getting answers required showing up in person and hoping someone could assist us. Scheduling changes were nearly impossible without being pushed months further down the waitlist. Even urgent non-elective medical issues did not seem to influence scheduling flexibility. Patients should be aware of these limitations before committing to the required exam process. This is a business in search of large patient volume and the bottom line. After nearly three months of waiting, we have canceled all future appointments with PNEA. It is too frustrating. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this clinic. Patients should carefully research not only the procedure itself but other local Opthalmology clinic choices, the clinic's billing practices, scheduling and communication policies. The office staff here is very friendly, professional and helpful. However, I was not impressed at all by my care with Dr. Jung so I am surprised by the 5 star reviews on here for him. He was extremely short with our visit and everything felt incredibly rushed. I am really tired of doctors spending less than 5 minutes with their patients. He did not give any thorough explanations as to changes in my eyesight and was very lackadaisical in his responses. I wrote a stellar review of your office, expertise, and customer service a few years ago at a time when Dr. TAYLOR was there. You just sent me (September 13, 2023) a request to post that Review on other platforms. NOT A CHANCE IN HELL! Your office banned me from further service after a finding that we still owed you $100, which isn't true. We received NO NOTICE that we owed you anything over the past few years. We paid in advance and our insurance paid 100% of the rest, after spending thousands of $'s in treatments and procedures. For many years I feared cataract surgery and had canceled one scheduled surgery with a doctor in Oregon because I didn't feel at ease with the doctor. The time had come when I could not delay surgery any longer so I made an appointment with Dr. Jung who put me at ease during the first office visit. During surgery I was relaxed and pleased that Dr. Jung talked to me during the surgery. It went very smoothly. I had the 2nd eye surgery without any problems. Since the surgery I've had a retinal surgeon and an ophthalmologist view my eyes and both said the lenses were perfectly aligned. I was not surprised to hear this al all. I recently had an eye exam only to find out that I had cataracts in both eyes. The staff at Northwest Eye Associates were simply great. Everything during the exam was explained from start to finish during each part of the exam. After a few minutes in the exam room Dr. Jung joined me for more technical explanations and to explain step by step as to what to expect if I decided to have cataract surgery. I simply couldn't believe the surgery could be that easy and could be done in such a short amount of time. Needless to say, Dr. Jung did a wonderful job. After I went back for a post-op visit, I met with Dr. Jung again. I told him how pleased I was with his work and staff and scheduled to have my other eye done the next week. I saw this doctor about 6 months ago and have finally decided I need to write this review. I deeply regret coming to this eye doctor for the following reasons: inability to communicate to me what the tests were doing or ruling out, unwillingness to discuss options for care, abrupt rude bedside manner which both frightened and shocked me. I understand that the tests available in this little suburban clinic are generic and not necessarily state of the art but I left having paid a substantial amount of money still not knowing why I had severe eye pain and terrifying loss of vision. I was tested there about an hour on tests and machines that seemed really really generic and frankly outdated (I do not know this for a fact, that's only my opinion) (but you will think the same if you go there, believe me). The doctor himself spent about 5 minutes with me. He spent these 5 minutes shaming me and denying knowing what else there was to be done. I was terrified not only of my vision loss but also by his disdainful manner which was more than curt - it was angry. I am taking the time to write this because I wish someone had told me to bother to leave Gig Harbor for excellent medical treatment. I was treated like a fast food customer and I really really needed medical CARE - I would have paid the same astronomical prices but been seen my a true specialist (where I ended up paying for all of it over again) if I had bothered to go elsewhere first. Be careful. You only get one pair of eyes, bother to go somewhere where they do research and treat you with respect. read more

Really bummed to write this update as my first experience was really good. They were not able to do a contact fitting for me, and now I cannot get a prescription. I will need to pay out of pocket for an exam elsewhere because they no longer have a doctor who can do contacts which seems insane for a vision center. They offered no suggestions or solutions for me. Very upset. read more

The Dr and her assistant (nurse) was amazing however I can't say the same about the front desk staff. I came in with a referral from the emergency room visit as I saw a Dr there and they wanted a re check. However when making my appointment they advised me that they could only see me once as they don't take my insurance but because I was coming from the ER i would be seen. However coming in the front desk treated me awful. However when seeing the Dr she was amazing and was able to explain things. So she wanted to see me again in 30 days regards to this visit to see if the retina had detached. I advised the Dr the office doesn't except my insurance she assured me it wasn't a problem as this was a post op appointment. However coming in the young lady at the desk upstairs checks me in says my appointment was canceled as they don't take my insurance someone should have called. I said i received no calls and I was aware they don't take my insurance but because I was coming from the ER it was covered. She sent me downstairs to talk to the billing insurance person I walk up and see walks away going to lunch and the one girl at the desk said are you Alyce I said yes and she said this other lady would help me. She got off her phone call insistently went into they don't take my insurance and they couldn't see me on and on. I told her my situation etc.. and I drove a half hour to get here and missed work. She then called someone and guess what they could see me it's still considered a post op appointment. I truly was talked to as if I was a piece of shit of the street coming in . read more

I took my 7 yea old daughter in a few months ago. The front office was rude and completely uninviting. After I received my bill I called in to pay and was greeting by "can you please hold...click". With as much as we paid for a simple check on a 7 year old I would not recommend going back simply because of the customer service aspect. There is only one doctor that comes in to see kids I think once a week and he was pleasant. read more

I was in my 20's when I was first diagnosed and my vision is still ~ 20/20, great news for my condition, @ 60! I have been a patient for several years, (the Doctor that I was seeing was competent and thorough, but seemed rushed and short on time) but I have to give this office a very low grade. First, there are LONG wait times for appointment phone cues, and MONTHS to be seen. (Although surprisingly you get right through to billing) In October 2021 after waiting several months for my appointment I was notified that a piece of test equipment was down and I would have to reschedule. There was an indeterminate wait time, as it was not known how long the equipment would be unavailable. No one contacted me, and now it is March 2, 2022, and when I enquired when they could reschedule me, I was told AUGUST!!! Also, unfortunately, the staff are probably overworked, because my wife and I on separate occasions were met with unpleasant and discourteous reception. Sorry PNEA...you had numerous opportunities to change my opinion of you. You have lost my confidence and my business. read more

Dr. Jung has taken over for Dr. Taylor at Pacific Northwest Eye Associates. I have been a patient of Dr. Taylor's for about 18 years and enjoyed the care there. Dr. Jung was absolutely great! I was very pleased with all he did and he also had a sense of humor that I enjoyed. I was worried that since Dr. Taylor was gone whether I would be happy (change is often hard), but Dr. Jung made it a very easy transition. I have cataracts and mild dry macular degeneration. He told me how to take care of both and left it up to me when I'd like cataract surgery. He felt if I was living with it ok now, that it wouldn't be necessary to do it at this time, but when it started bothering me more, to make an appointment. I find that refreshing as so many places are so quick to do surgery these days. No pressure. It was a great experience all around. I will continue to see Dr. Jung for all my eye needs! Thank you! I can't recommend Pacific Northwest Eye Associates. I had been a long-time customer and dealt with Mark Taylor. He always did a great job and I never had a problem with my glasses. Recently I purchased new frames and had to have my prescription updated. I took a pair of glasses in with me and let them know that they were perfect bifocals and I really just needed a current prescription. However, they gave me a full check-up, of which I didn't have a problem, and said they could fine-tune my prescription and I would see everything even more clearly. I sent the prescription to the company doing my new glasses and when I received them they were terrible. I took the glasses to Pacific Northwest Eye Associates and they confirmed they were made per the new prescription. I, again, gave them the glasses that I had taken with me prior and asked them to just duplicate the prescription. No, they had to fiddle around and make some "minor" adjustments to improve on what I thought was an ideal prescription for me. So, I sent the new prescription to the company that made my glasses, and their policy was to modify the lenses one time so I wouldn't have to pay for the modified lenses. I got the glasses fitted with the new prescription and couldn't have been more disappointed. They are better but I rarely wear them because my older glasses provide me with the best vision. I will be going elsewhere the next time I need an eye examination. read more

The Ophth did listen to me but immediately sent me to Seattle to another Ophth, he didn't want to treat my dry eye , even thought I was totally miserable, and dismissed me to another doctor. My current Ophth and PCP couldn't believe this. I'm being treated by another office, so I do not recommend this office. read more

Under NO circumstances should you visit this location. The staff, from the front reception to office manager, are rude, and don't do their jobs properly. They make mistakes, don't correct errors, don't know how to file paperwork or even call in a prescription properly. (Valerie in the Optical Shop is 5 Stars - but she can't make up for the rest of the office.). Horrible - rude - one of their opticians didn't even know what "visual acuity" was! Stay away! read more

When I showed up for my last visit, there were three people in front of me waiting to check in at the front desk and there was no receptionist, or anyone to be seen for 5 minutes. Finally somebody came out and checked us in with not even an apology. Then I was in the waiting area for 20 minutes before my name was called and then another 15 minutes after I was put in an exam room. A total of 40 minutes waiting after my appointment time. I never had a long wait when Dr. Taylor was there. He ran a tight ship and the help was on there toes. I will not return there until he does, hopefully next year.
