May 9, 2023, I walked into Suburban Opticians to inquire about purchasing a pair of single vision glasses and prescription readers. The owner directed me to a pair of frames she initially (along with two other employees) stated were too large for my degree of nearsightedness, thereby minimizing my visual acuity. "Are you sure these aren't too big? They don't look small to me." "I think you'll be okay with those. I think we can make them work." She was the professional with the expertise I was paying for, so I deferred to her judgement. She said if the frames were a problem, it would be no big deal to switch them out later. The owner directed me to call the following day to make an appointment with one of their optometrists. I placed the call to Suburban Opticians, and they chose the doctor, made the appointment, took my money for the appointment, and received my written prescription from the doctor - not me. I would not receive a copy of my prescription until after money changed hands. Before entering the exam room, I remained at the door saying I was very nearsighted and unable to see with progressive lenses. I asked if he would be willing to give me single vision glasses and prescription readers, instead. "Sure! No problem! Come on in!" The majority of the appointment was filled with his personal accolades about his sought-after expertise on diabetes and the eyes. I felt more like his audience than his patient. During the same week, I met with the owner to finish the order for both pairs of glasses. She was acting very strange about my prescription. I directly asked if there was something wrong. She deflected, then made an appointment to follow up with the other optometrist who also dodged my questions about the script (the doctors have the same unusual last name). It took some time before I learned both the owner, and the second optometrist, covered up the fact that not only were the prescriptions written for progressive lenses, that both the owner and first optometrist were informed I could not use, but also for "distance only" - the opposite of the promised readers. I was a college student who needed to see my computer, read textbooks, do research, write papers, make presentations, shower, put on make-up, do my hair, cook, clean, LIVE! Being limited to not seeing closer than ten feet was not an option! As I continued asking questions, I learned the first doctor's prescriptions could not be altered to give me what I paid for. They would not offer a re-do for his mistakes, only their workarounds. Following this experience, Suburban Opticians continued to BOTCH every single thing they were paid to do. (It was much more convoluted than there is room for, here.) Every person I had contact with gave me contradictory information - continually. I could not get a consistent answer from any of them. Though money was pre-paid for both pairs of glasses, the owner advised I should wait to order the readers, later. When it came time to pick up the single vision glasses, not only did they give me an immediate, intense headache, but it was like putting on someone else's prescription. They were so blurry I was literally blind for all three fields of vision: near, mid, and distance. In the end, and hundreds of dollars later, according to what they themselves informed me, they used the WRONG prescription to craft the WRONG lenses that were placed inside the WRONG frames!!! It was said they had another customer with a level of nearsightedness that also required small frames. I was told they ordered a line of small frames to keep on hand for future customers who may need them. I was to receive a call when the frames arrived so I could select which pair I wanted. At that time, they would also re-order the lenses they previously had their lab craft, incorrectly (the inner surface was shaped flat, not concave). Before exiting the store, I asked to have the glasses, I could not use, removed from my tray, since I wasn't buying them. I was told they needed to remain there as a physical point of contact showing I made a purchase. She said they would not be considered mine until they left the store. Believing her, instead of following my instincts, I left. Four months later, the same employee contacted me through voice mail saying, "These glasses will work the way they are. You paid for them. They are yours. You need to come and get them." I did not, and I will not. To date, I own nothing I paid for - not the correct prescriptions, not the single vision glasses, and not the prescription readers. NOTHING was done correctly, NOTHING was made correctly, NOTHING left their store, and NOTHING ever came into my possession. But ALL my money was fully retained by Suburban Opticians. read more

very low selection. Nothing very pretty, young or hip. The lowest price frames I could find just for READERS was $175 and he said I could pay another $170 for my reader lenses. Most if not all of the frames look like something my great aunt who is 75 would wear. Meh. I will look elsewhere or order online, I am not interested in looking like an aging matron. read more

Very expensive but they do good work. I was particularly not happy with them not calling me when my glasses were ready for pickup. That seems like standard practice at an Optician but I guess they don't do that. They also try to upsell you on a bunch of different coatings and lens types. The blue tint polarization was sold to me under false pretenses and I didn't even get so much as an apology when it didn't work as prescribed. They do have a wide selection of frames and are generally helpful. Expect to spend $300-400+ on your frames, however. read more

My 2 year old's eyes started crossing about 5 days ago and I went into emergency panic mode. I got us a quick appointment with a pediatric opthamologist and he prescribed her glasses. We checked out Costco and Walmart and neither had special frames for toddlers who might decide to constantly yank off glasses every 2 minutes. Also it would take them 7-10 days to get any prescription filled. How could I wait that long! I called Suburban Opticians and she said they had frames in stock and could also order some. We went in and the ladies there were so kind. I have been randomly bursting into tears over this entire situation, and they made me feel completely normal and welcome. The woman measured my daughter and when I asked how long to get it filled she said they had the lenses in stock and we would have glasses later that day! I highly recommend this place for frames and service in general. We didn't get an eye appointment, but I will be scheduling one for myself in the future. WOW! i had the best experience here. they had a groupon which is what originally made me check them out as i was looking for a particular brand of eyeglasses and they carried them. i did not make an appt. and simply showed up on a friday morning and Debbie was more than welcoming and helpful. i explained what i was looking for and she helped me search high and low until we found the perfect pair of frames. she even went in the back room to check any backstock and/or new items that might be similiar to what i had in mind that wasnt on the floor. they have a super selection of frames for all shapes and sizes and a wonderful sunglasses section as well. designer names and less familiar names to help with every budget. i was so excited when i found the perfect pair and wanted them asap but was ok being told it would probably take about 10 days, i was so pleasantly surprised when i got a call they were in early. again, i made no appt. and just showed up and she was, once again, the lovliest person with my fitting and making sure everything was perfect. i will definitely be going back for my any of my eye needs and would highly recommend anyone searching for a new place to check them out, you will not be disappointed. read more

This optical dispensary has the best inventory in Tacoma, an impressive selection of well chosen, stylish and high quality frames. They carry the lines I prefer to wear (Silhouette, Tura, Alain Mikli). The opticians are professional and knowledgeable, I greatly appreciate this as a person who was a licensed optician in my first career. The service has been great and the workmanship is beautiful. I'm kind of exacting and I want things that often other optical providers couldn't or wouldn't get for me. For example, I like flash mirrors on my sunglasses over gradient tint lenses, which my last provider just wouldn't do - but at Suburban Optical it's no problem. They can do anything I ask for and it always arrives looking great. My husband has gotten a prescription from the independent optometrist who works out of this location, Dr. Chous, and he was really great as well. I am very happy that we have an optical dispensary like this in Tacoma. I will never go anywhere else. read more

The team is outstanding in terms of personalized care, advice on what frames fit or do not fit your face, and have even helped me EXCHANGE a pair of glasses that I did not love.... These folks want me to sign a waiver saying they might break my frames if they replace the lenses. AND they also won't REFUND the cost of the lenses if THEY BREAK THE FRAMES. What's to keep them from just breaking the frame and keeping my money? Nothing. BTW, these are hefty titanium frames. But they were super pissy about not accepting them. "I wouldn't do it" is what they said. What they're saying is they break frames (their lab must be awful) or only want to add lenses to frames you buy from them so they get double mark-up. Plus they don't allow photos so no texting the spouse if you need to decide between 2 looks. Shop elsewhere. Seriously. Suburban Opticians is the best eyeglass store I've found in the greater Tacoma area. Not only is their inventory extensive and appealing but their customer service is outstanding! When I first went there a little over a year ago I briefly described the type of frame I was looking for and the gal went over and pulled the perfect frame off the shelf. BAM! I've never had that happen without trying on about 30 pairs. (I'm very picky.) Fast forward a year .... I took a very bad fall and scratched one of the lenses. I thought I would have to buy a new lens but they told me it was covered under a scratch warranty and replaced it for free. Then a month later an arm of the frame broke off. It wasn't fixable and the exact frame was no longer available. Yet they were able to order in a perfect substitute in a slightly different color, swap out the lenses and send me on my happy way with new glasses - again at no charge!! I've seen him for 3 yrs but when my new glasses were blurry I made an appt for a re-check. He was in a hurry and behind schedule. I was concerned because my eyes apparently changed so much in 3 months. I called the next day because I had follow-up questions. I never got a call back so I went in to the office again. Dr. Paul ignored me and ultimately refused to even speak with me saying "its not going to happen". It was shocking how rude he was. I solved my problem by going to another optical shop where they patiently addressed my concerns and answered my questions at no charge. I now have a new eye doctor. read more

When you get older glasses become a big deal in your life. Finding opticians who are knowledgeable and will work with you is hard. I was very pleased at the time Shawn took to work with me in selecting frames and then being so great at telling me which lense shapes worked or didnt. The owner took time to talk with me about the industry and Melissa adjusted and readjusted the frames until I got the perfect fit. When you do some home work and you understand a little more about the industry, meaning you know about the monopoly with Essilor and Luxottica, you can make better decisions. Then you just have to find a really good optician and a large and well picked selection by a professional owner who knows their stuff. read more

We've been in Tacoma less than a year. My daughter's glasses broke (purchased in a different city) and we brought them in so they could have a look. They weren't repairable, but Chelsey found us some closeout frames that the lenses would fit in for $30! Now, we have something to get us by until we can come in for an eye appt and get her new glasses! The only thing that kept me from clicking 5 stars was the sticker shock on retail frames and lenses, although they come with a good warranty and discount for first-time clients. I brought my daughter in to get glasses and decided to get new ones myself since I hasn't had any in 7 years. My daughter and I worked with different ladies and both were extremely helpful and honest about what they liked and didn't. My daughter wound up with Versace glasses that she is in live with. I wound up with Guess and they are fantastic. I don't know how they did it but they got my lenses so thin! I'm nearly blind so my glasses weigh so much normally. These don't. It is a little pricey but they had 50% off the frames which allowed us to pick the nicer name brands. read more

So very glad I went here and look forward to actually getting my new glasses! Update: I have my new glasses in hand ALREADY, took 3 business days. My prescription is single vision and I normally just wear my glasses around the house. Contacts for daily life. I was shocked they had them done in 3 days. Ordered on Thursday afternoon and they were ready 10am Monday. I didn't realize they have their own lab there too! LOVE my new glasses so much I may even wear them outside of the house! They are so lightweight and that's what I needed and wanted. Bonus was the frames were 50% off right now. $258 was the total and I only paid $138. Insurance picked up a portion. I had an eye exam somewhere else earlier this year so my prescription was still good, unfortunately I ended up with a heavy pair of Coke bottle looking lenses in an ugly plastic frame, I wore only a handful of times because of the weight. I also felt rushed at this other tiny optician office and it wasn't a good experience all around. Metal frames are way better for me and that's what I have now and they are even brand name-Juicy Couture! Ooh la la, LOL somehow they made the lenses super thin which helps with the weight greatly. Who wants to wear heavy glasses, I know I don't! Awesome! I couldn't be happier with my new specs! I highly recommend Suburban Opticians for anyone needing glasses or sunglasses. This is the best business I have ever dealt with when it comes to contacts and glasses!! They have an excellent selection of glasses and if they don't have it then they'll order them for you. I was prescribed in Olympia for some awful contacts and the prescription was specifically for a certain type of lenses. I asked if they had the contacts in stock and I told them how much I hated the fit of the contacts. They offered a free fitting and gave me a sample set of contacts. I just want to say that I was not treated with an ounce of kindness or respect by the owner of this business. A few months ago my wife had a heart attack early in the morning. I rushed out of the house without my wallet & when I drove home to get some of her belongings I unfortunately ran out of gas and pulled off the road into the Suburban Opticians parking lot. I had my cell phone but, all of my family members were at the hospital and did not answer. I tried to explain to the owner ( Melissa) That I just needed a little assistance to get some gas to get home or some time for a family member to respond.
