Tremelo arm no longer fits after service at Gilmore Music

Bought a brand new guitar in for a basic setup and it was returned to me in worse condition than when I brought it in. Setup was good, but other issues were introduced. I will not be back.

I hate this place. Played the tambourine once and it fell apart they offered no store credit or refund. I kindly explained that i was in DreamGirls and we open This Friday and while my baby cried he just looked at me and said unfortunately there's nothing I can do! NOTHING?! Really? Without us you wouldn't even have music. Never going back!!! Word of Life on West in Los Angeles however had no problem offering a nice refund in Jesus name when they're tambourine broke the next day. Piss off Gilmore! This is America

I recently picked up the guitar and started takin lessons a few months ago. I stopped in to have some new strings put on my guitar and was greeted by Teian (tee-an) -I'm sure I'm spelling his name wrong, sorry dude- Anyways dude was super helpful and restrung my guitar for me. I chose some nicer strings and the total was like $32 I came in around noon and he performed the task right on the spot while me and my 4 year old watched. While dude was working I was browsing guitars and found one that sounded 10x better than the one I had now. I wound up coming back a few hours later and made a cash deal with dude for my new guitar So then dude tells me, they have a special and all new guitars get new strings and setup (cuz people like me play them and mess with them) So this is now like 4-5pm on a Friday and this place is super busy...all the customers are super nice and patient, the staff was super friendly and attentive to everyone in the joint. Dude setting up my guitar was happy to throw a little guitar education my way and show me some pointers on restringing and tuning. To top off my amazing guitar deal. I got 6 picks, a soft case for my guitar and a strap!!! I didn't realize all this was included in the price. I left super happy and stoked with a new guitar Just a little history for those who don't know, the band Sublime broke into this shop back in the day and looted it...then wrote a damn song about it . Gotta love LB Thanks for being so rad and helping me out! And thanks for letting my daughter play all the instruments hahaha

A little background on me: I am a Long Beach musician and am someone who has always made a conscious effort to patron small businesses in my community instead of buying from major (or online) retailers whenever I can. I do yoga on the bluff, buy my juices at Salud, my produce at the farmers market, and my guitar strings at Gilmore . I love this city and think it important to support the local vendors that add to it. I had a show March 7th and found that the Yamaha keyboard I have performed with for the past 8 years had finally given up on me. I rushed into Gilmore to buy one to play that night, tried a few they had on the floor, and after deciding on one, they brought out an unboxed keyboard from the back (I thought nothing of it since I was going to be playing the instrument immediately anyway), rung me up, and $300 later I was out the door with my shiny "new" Yamaha. Barely 2 months and only 7 shows later (I was overseas most of April and did not take it with me), I bring the keyboard to a festival last night only to find that it would not power on. The musical director and entire sound team scrambled to try and help me for about 20 minutes to get it to work, but nada. The keyboard was inoperable, and I was unable to play the show. **Hoping to find a solution, I brought the keyboard and my purchase receipt to Gilmore today at 2:45 and explained to the attendant that I had bought the board here two months ago and that it had failed to power on at a performance yesterday. He immediately got defensive and told me that 2 months was too long for him to be sure that I didn't purposely mistreat the keyboard. He also told me that the keyboard was purchased used (Used????) and when I responded that I was unaware I had purchased a used keyboard, he said, "Yeah, right, I know someone told you. You said you purchased it out of the box, right? Well, there you go. We're not going to give you a refund, this is not going to be resolved today, and if there need to be repairs made on the keyboard we're not going to cover the cost for you. We're also not going to give you store credit for this. You can't make it seem like the fact that your keyboard not working is somehow our fault. You can call our repair technician and if he says he can fix the keyboard you can pay for it yourself." Whoa. The saddest part about it is----- I hadn't asked for any of those things. As a customer returning to a place of purchase, I was hoping to be presented with possible solutions, yes, but to be yelled at, disrespected, and publicly chastised in the most hostile manner (the customers who were behind me in line walked away out of discomfort) was not only unprofessional and uncalled-for, but embarrassing; not just for myself for being subject to it but for the reputation of this company. Needless to say, I will not be back and I will also regretfully be cancelling the voice lessons that I had booked here. Do yourself a favor and only come if you know exactly what you want and plan to be out quickly. If you may require customer service, I recommend you look somewhere else. I asked the attendant for his name. He refused to provide it so I've attached his photo.

I have a somewhat rare Danelectro (a pain in the butt sometimes), and Pedro was very persistent in fixing it.

Brought my guitar 15 minutes later, they accepted me and were incredibly transparent about the repair, labor, and material costs. I thought the cost was incredibly fair, compared to other quotes I got from other locations. I gave them my guitar, they told me it'd be available in 1-2 days, and I picked it up the following day. Great service and very friendly!

John patiently listened to what I wanted, provided suggestions, and laid out the work to be completed. He did a truly remarkable job--beautiful, original 50's wiring and an insanely clean seal on the cavity. Maybe for the first time ever, my Les Paul has all the warmth, roar, and chunky goodness it is supposed to, and it is more playable than ever. Pricing was fair and transparent, and when I brought in the guitar a couple days later because of a couple minor issues with the fix, John addressed them in minutes. My go-to luthier from this day onward, no question. Quick note for anyone considering coil-splitting: I won't go into too much detail here, but John has a special trick to get around the issues a lot of folks encounter with thin, cheap-sounding tone on coil-split humbuckers. No, it doesn't make my LP sound like a Strat, but it does open up a whole new range of punchy, twangy, crunchy tones that I did not have access to before. If you are interested in trying out this upgrade, look no further. John is your guy.

I've had plenty of basic setups before, but this felt like a whole different level of attention and care. He walked me through what makes his Rockstar Setup different and you can tell it's not just a quick adjustment, it's a full dial-in of the instrument. When I got my guitar back it played incredibly smooth, stayed in tune better, and just felt more responsive overall. Anything and everything that could be oiled or lubricated was taken care of. The amount of work and detail that goes into the rockstar set up actually takes a few days and I guess depending on the condition of your guitar the longer it takes. My guitar had a lot of rust on the bridge and tuning keys. One of the saddles was even frozen in place and I couldn't get the string out. Steve took care of it. I didn't even notice how bad the condition of the guitar was in until I saw all of the photos Steve took. (Before and after). Who does that? It's hard to describe, but it actually made me want to pick it up and play more. Everything felt tighter and more precise without sacrificing comfort. The smell of the oil on the bridge and the lemon oil on the neck actually smell good too! You can tell Steve takes pride in going beyond the standard setup and really bringing out the best in the guitar. If you're on the fence about upgrading from a regular setup I'd definitely recommend going for it. I'll be sticking with the Rockstar Setup from now on.

Steve was super nice and easy to talk to which made the whole experience smooth from start to finish. My boyfriend had P90s installed in his Les Paul and needed it back in time for a gig, and Steve delivered! On my BC Rich he dialed everything in perfectly the intonation is spot on! the action feels just right, and the neck adjustment made a huge difference in how it plays. It's not easy to find someone who works this fast and still pays attention to all the details, but Steve definitely does. I wouldn't hesitate to bring any of our guitars back to him, we live in Long Beach and his shop is so close to us another plus!
