I know, what the hell kind of Chinese person am I?? We walked down Broadway and suddenly saw Yan's - ok more specifically, plastic carriers with pairs of teeny quarter-sized turtles outside the store. OMG - SO cute! I think they're baby red eared sliders, and they are DARLING. I know that technically, they are too small to be sold because the fear is that kids will put them in their mouths. But bf and I can control ourselves - we'll wait til they get meatier to eat them. LOL, I'm kidding!!! Right now, they're in the fishbowl we put them in, happily paddling around and sticking their necks out at us. Cute little babies! I've seen these turtles in San Gabriel at some ginormous supermarket store, and they were el cheapo there - $10 for a pair. But at Yan's they were EVEN CHEAPER - $5 for a pair! I swear, I am making my bargain-hunting Chinese mother SO DAMN proud today. It might make up for all the times I brought shame to family in my raucous teens : ).

They have many places to buy bamboo here in Chinatown but I like this place the best because the owners are amazing. They have the mother load of bamboo. They have short, curly, long, and more. Prices are anywhere from $4.99 and up. My 93 year old mother wanted some bamboo too so I made another trip down just for her. The owners are so amazing and always go out their way to help me load my car. This time they helped to watch my car because I was in the red with my mom. I scrambled to find parking across the street and rushed over and OMGGGGG!!! I AM SO GLAD I STOPPED HERE! They have such an incredible and well-cared for selection of different plants including bonsai and bamboo, along with a ton of decorative indoor mini-fountains!! The owners are so incredibly kind and helpful and I immediately could tell how much they care for their business. I bought two Buddha fountains, a bonsai and bamboo (which came in a gorgeous Lotus bowl!) After I paid for my fountains, one of the owners, an older gentleman came and opened each box by hand and showed me how to put together and turn them on. He also said he wanted to check the packaging and make sure nothing was damaged before I took it home. Sure enough one of them had damage and he went to the back room and got a new one for me, and then inspected that one too to make sure it was in good condition! Absolutely love the dedication they have to their shop and I left, walking back to my car with a huge smile, excited to put al these goodies in my car. I was able to send photos of past arrangements of hers that I liked via text message and photos of the cymbidium orchids that my grandma used to grow. Little Tokyo Florist at first quoted a higher price than I was expecting, but was able to lower the price and include as many orchids as possible within my budget. It turned out that a lot of orchids fit within the budget! The design of the spray was very beautiful, as I expected from photos of her work on Yelp. Delivery was $40 and the spray was $300, not including tax. After tax the total was $373.15. The flowers lasted a long time after the service, so we definitely got some fresh flowers.

Most recently, Little Tokyo Florist made 2 beautiful custom bouquets and understood exactly what I was going for. It looked unique and not generic and had the more wild aesthetic I was going for. They have a good selection and the quality of the flowers for the last order was great. Photos of them don't do them justice! Only feedback is their delivery prices are a bit high and it can be tough to get the desired delivery time but that may be due to it being a small run business so it's the actual owner I believe who hand delivers some of the orders which is rare and cool. I ordered 2, one delivered to Monterey park which was $30 for delivery and the other was originally supposed to be delivered to the apartment building literally across the street (Tokyo Villa) and they were going to charge me $20 so I opted to pick it up after work and deliver them myself.

Quite sadly it was closed. A week later I called the store and surprisingly a man answered the phone. I asked him what their hours were, and he tersely responded, "What do ya want?". Answering a question with a question? A bit of an oxymoron question since I'd never been in the shop and had no clue as to what merchandise they carried. I responded I don't know, since I haven't been inside. The line went cold, so I'm assuming I was placed on hold, so I hung up the phone. With customer service like that, I'm astounded that they've been able to stay in business so long. I don't plan on returning anytime soon.
