Stopped by on a Saturday late morning after snagging a parking spot right in front of the shop. It's small (they only allow 5-6 people in at a time!) but has a nice selection of paper goods and drinkware. Service was meh. Probably one of THE worst customer service experiences I have EVER had at a craft/hobby/paper store. Staff members were rude and patronizing. Not worth the trip there. Much better choices in the LA area with staff that are actually helpful, friendly, and professional. This was a one-and-done. I was so put off, I left without purchasing anything. I was actually pissed that after being treated so poorly, my friend chose to spend ANY money there. The responses to reviews on here are just as cold and patronizing so obviously it's a systemic problem If yelp allowed me to leave zero stars I would. My friend and I came in and had an awkward experience. I'm not sure why, however, one of them kept talking and over explaining things. My friend found your stamps but no paper to stamp on, then made a big deal about us asking for a paper bag. I did buy a few things and it wasn't like we weren't spending money. They did finally give one small bag, but by the time we left, we just were so insulted and felt belittled. Later, we had gone to other stationery stores that day which were so positive and referred to other stores...and then to compare, the store really failed. Maybe not assuming every customer knows nothing about the items and letting people finish sentences would help a lot. read more

Paper Plant is a cute Japanese stationery shop located in Chinatown. The shop used to be a part of Thank You Coffee, but Paper Plant expanded and opened a new space right next to Thank You Coffee in October 2024. [Parking]: Street parking only, but free metered and street parking on Sunday [Experience]: The shop only allows 6 guests at a time. The shop is pretty small, but visitors can find high quality notebooks, journals, greeting cards, pens, pencils, stickers, etc. I like some of postcards as they were quite unique, but I will say the selection for some categories was quite limited (e.g. Valentine's Day cards). [Note]: The shop offers an annual Stamp Rally happening from August through December. Passports are available starting August 1st during shop hours and can only be purchased in the month of August & one per person (passport is $1 each). A new stamp will be released each month and missed stamps can't be collected later. Complete all 5 stamps to earn a special gift from Paper Plant. [Conclusion]: This is a small but mighty stationery shop and definitely a fun place to stop by for anyone who's in Chinatown. read more

Was looking for a nice pen as a gift for a dear friend and wanted to support a small business. It was a cute little shop and had a regular flow of customers. I waited patiently for the line to finish before asking for assistamce. Sales person acted cheerful but did not seem interested in selling me the pen. After showimg me a few pens I told her I would take it. Instead of ring me up, she began ringing up other people. She told me to get in line and she would ring me up. I couldnt believe it. I had been in lone and waiting also. If you don't want to sell fountain pens, don't display them. Not worth the trip as it is a tiny store with not very much in stock. Especially when parking os mot easy to find. They really need to rethink their customer service here. You will likely find better selection a deals elsewhere. read more

Location is smaller than expected and dimly lit. There's parking meters for street parking. There's some natural light from outside. I didn't like that we had to leave our drinks on a bench upon entry. They do have a large selection of stationary, journals, stickers, cards, and postcards. It was decently priced. I was able to get a sticker and four postcards for under $20. At the cashier you can stamp your journals or notebooks. I didn't have either so I stamped the postcards I bought for free. Fun place to stop by after you've picked up some drinks from Thank You Coffee next door. read more

Paper Plant (est 2020) is a charming tiny stationery store in Chinatown, LA. They have avast collection of papers, art, stickers, inks, pens, booklet, etc. I was greeted by Katy, staff clerk, as I entered the store. They have good selection of stationery stuff. High expectations when I saw all the buzz on this shop but it was just ok. Super cramped, super dark (I was so tempted to ask if this was the norm, as both overhead lamps were out), limited selection and quite pricey overall. I saw a sign saying they allow 8 people in the store at once, so sure lines are the norm here. I was surprised how much they overcharge for things. I understand an upcharge for an import but seeing a sticker sheet priced at 450 yen (the number in the box of the back of any product sheet) = $3 USD, that they charge $8.95 for...well, you'd do better just stopping by any Asian bookstore attached to a grocery (like Mitsuwa or Hmart) or going to ay shop in Little Tokyo. Especially in LA where here are plenty of other options. They have a slow check-out situation too - the gal had to manually enter my AmEx and didn't realize that the CVV code is on the front so was ready to reject my payment at first until I explained. No refunds but I still like a receipt which they also did not email as they said they would (only that option or text). Just bumpy experience across the board. If I could leave negative stars I would. I've been a regular customer at Paper Plant for a while, but my last experience was incredibly frustrating. On my recent visit, I picked out several items and was ready to check out when I asked if I could purchase the paper vase and flower that were on display. It seemed like a simple request--especially since I was already buying multiple things and was clearly a paying customer. Instead of trying to help, the staff asked three different managers, and every single one just said "no." No explanation, no attempt to offer an alternative, and no effort to make the sale. It felt less like customer service and more like rigid rule-following for the sake of saying no. What makes it even more frustrating is that everything in the store is already very expensive. When customers are willing to spend that kind of money, you would expect at least a little flexibility or effort to accommodate a reasonable request. Retail should be about helping customers and making sales, not turning away people who are literally trying to buy your products. Walking out after that interaction was frustrating and disappointing. After that experience, I won't be coming back. Blocked. read more

Tiny location... tiny but mighty they have packed a lot into this little shop. The Washi tape was expensive but it is quality tape with unique designs. Lovely attentive counter desk staff. This is a stationary / coffee shop! There are two separate entrances; one for the main stationary storefront, and another entrance for the smaller (read: tiny) coffee shop that also hosts some small items like stickers and coffee accessories. Chinatown can be challenging to park in, I found metered street parking about a block down on Bernard Street where 1/2 an hour cost 50 cents. All the 3 employees I spoke with and interacted with were very friendly and I even struck up a conversation with two of them about jewelry which was so pleasant. The main stationary store isn't huge but they do sell a wide variety of products from stickers to ink to stamps to pens to planners (hobonichis anyone?) to stencils to actual postal stamps!! to greeting cards to beautiful Chinatown postcards and more!!!! Dodger Blue Milk w/ Matcha + whole milk (iced) (+$1 extra for matcha) 3.5/5 Was this Dodger Blue? No. Did it remind me of Mariposa Matcha? Yes! Did I think this was a good ratio of matcha powder : milk? Unfortunately, no. However, this was a fine average drink to sip while I went on about my day. I would be interested in trying another drink when I return. I MUST tell everyone that the stationary shop has 3 unique shop branded cute stamps that you can bring your journal or planner in to stamp omg, I was so obsessed with these. If you are visiting from out of town, one of these stamps even says "Los Angeles Chinatown" so I think this would make a great addition to an LA travel journal spread :) read more

The most adorable little stationary store in Chinatown. A plethora of cards, stationary, stamps, pens, pencils etc. I wish I could buy every single item. They have super friendly staff and even offer beautiful hand wrapping. If you're like me and love to write or are in need of small unique gifts. Paper Plant is the place for you. I buy way too many pens so I'm on pause after the 2 I purchased from my last visit. But as soon as I need more.. I'll be right here. This was a cute little shop located in Chinatown, Los Angeles. They had a variety of journals, stickers, stamps, and other journal supplies. The shop is kind of small but it had a lot of cute stuff. I bought some vintage looking postcards of Dodger stadium and a few stickers. The staff was friendly. There is a sign that limits how many people can go in at a time but that's understandable with the size of the shop. They don't have parking so you will have to find street parking. There was a cute coffee shop next door and a bakery. Cute place but small and dimly lit not sure if it's always like that. read more

What an absolutely adorable stationery store right smack in the middle of Chinatown. It is super tiny -- and on top of that, it shares this space with THANK YOU COFFEE. The worker behind the counter was super helpful, and helped me find the correct writing implement for my project. I love Paper Plant!! I purchased by Hobonichi Techo planner and cover from them last year and I have LOVED using it all year. I was so excited to purchase a cover for my cover (LOL) and a new insert this year!! This shop is small, but it is filled with only the cutest stationery and knick knacks! I also love that they have a coffee shop (Thank You Coffee) in the space, which makes it convenient to pick up a delicious iced oat latte. I have loved stationary since I was a little bean. I particularly love Japanese stationary. Could have started with my Sanrio obsession. I just prefer Japanese pens. And I happened upon Paper Plant a year ago and every time I'm in the area of chinatown I make a point to go to paper plant for a new pen and a coffee from Thank You Coffee inside the same store. The staff is so sweet and helpful and answers all my dumb questions with kindness. Claire, I think is her name, has helped me refill/reload some of my pens with new cartridges and the owner Friedia is beaming with excitement when talking about different new stationary products she just got in. And she designs a lot of her stickers and gift cards and stationary. Those ladies are just so passionate about stationary, how can you not get excited about it with them, even though you already have too many notebooks and pens?! Prices are really reasonable for being imported products. But a lot doesn't stay on the shelf long bc they're so busy. And sometimes you'll see a celebrity right next to you looking at pens too and you have to keep chill and it's hard. I literally saw 2 today and the shop is like 200 sq ft at most. Parking is, well, LA. Lots of meters. But it's not the worst depending on what time you go. Street closes at 4pm during the weekend though for like DTLa traffic passage. So go before then. The first time I happened across this shop, I was put off by how small it was and the sometimes long line to get in as they only allow 5 customers at a time inside the shop. But I've returned twice with my wife and 2 kids and even though its a small shop, it's well organized and there's a lot to see. There are pens and notebooks, journals and planners, stationary items (stamps, stickers, postcards) and the stock gets updated. The staff is very friendly -- our first visit, my wife told them that we forgot to bring our journals so that we can stamp the page with the Paper Plant stamp. The worker kindly stamped a few times on the paper bag holding our items so that we were able to cut it out at home and paste it into our Hobonichi / Traveler's Notebook. Today it was kind of an unplanned visit so we didn't have our notebooks again, but one of these days, we'll be back with them. Can't wait to see what new stock they have next. read more

I've been meaning to visit here but it wasn't what I expected. I walked in and wasn't greeted at all, just glanced at, by the barista and cashier, which felt weird because the shop is super small. They have a good selection of Japanese stationary, notepads, washi tape, and hobonichi accessories (though i didn't see them). Somethings are priced fairly well and others are more expensive than I've seen but the convenience of being able to pick it up in person is worth it. I looked around and thought maybe I'd be asked if I'm looking for anything or had any questions, a lot of the products are in Japanese and don't have translations, or don't have clear labels so it can be difficult to figure out what it is, but was never spoken to until it was time to pay. I didn't even end up ordering coffee because I wasn't feeling super welcomed which is awkward in a space so small. Overall, cute tiny shop but probably will stick to shopping online at jet pens for my stationary because of the lackluster service, a hi goes a long way. If you don't mind an awkward occasion it's cute to atleast check out their selection. read more
