Very disappointing experience here. My family and I fly from LA to visit family friends here in Calgary. The first day we came here for dim sum and it was nice, food was ok. However, second day we thought getting a quick bite before we head over to the airport back to LA. But holy crap the service was rude as F. I finally got around to trying this place during my visit to calgary, this restaurant took over for China Rose which was an absolute gem, and one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the city. I was hoping for the same consistency and flavors, I would say it's not as good as china Rose but it definitely is delicious I tried the ginger chicken and the pineapple chicken balls along with the hot and sour soup All were very good but unfortunately the ginger chicken was lacking in the sauce department. Very disappointing service. When I asked for a glass for my ginger ale, the waitress responded rudely, saying I should have told her in advance that I needed a glass with my drink. I came here on a random Monday with my family. We ordered our food around 6PM. At 7:15, we had not received a single entree. Meanwhile, tables who had ordered after us had gotten their food already. We asked one of the waitresses to check on our order, who in return gave us awful attitude and told us that we had to just keep waiting without looking at our receipt at all. When the food FINALLY came around 7:25, she came back to our table just to say "See? I told you it was coming, didn't I?" in a mocking tone. Impressive! I am surprised that Calgary has pretty good Chinese food. I got the Xiao long bao (or soup dumpling), the lamb hot pot, yang fried rice and a vegetable dish. On top of it we ordered the beef soup. The lamb hot pot is really good. No gammy smell. The Xiao long bao has soup in it. This is a plus because the XLB is not easy to make. The yang fried rice was ok. I mean I am usually not like a big fan of this dish. The ground beef soup was nice. Its almost like the cream corn egg soup but without the corn so its less sweet. Its not bad. The vegetable dish ( not sure what its call) its good because it was stir fried with garlic. Anything with garlic is good. Décor is nothing fancy. Its a restaurant on its own building. It was ok, nothing stood out to me as exceptional. Found they don't fill up their containers as much as other places, for example their beef ho fan portion was in a small Styrofoam container vs the larger metallic containers that they use for other noodles. Meat was scant in most dishes and the ginger chicken was mostly batter but the sauce was really good. Asked to substitute a sauce for a chicken and veg dish and got some resistance, eventually the girl on the phone agreed to do it. Salt and pepper squid was very tough and in big chunks vs sliced finely, and very bland. I've had it at other Chinese resto's for take out and it was never as tough and bland as this was. I ordered for pick up as almost everything nearby was closed due to Covid, told me 15-20 min for pick up and when I got there it was another 15 min wait. Ordered enough food for 6 people and got 3 fortune cookies, no napkins, hot sauce or soy sauce either. Prices are much higher here than other places nearby so unless you can get a flyer coupon in the mail its overpriced. Imperial Dynasty which is just a 3 min drive away is pretty solid and you get a free dish without a coupon and prices are about 15% less. It was fine for what it is - typical western style Chinese,but I probably wont come back. read more

Disappointed in the sweet and sour pork because how can you really screw up sweet and sour pork?! It was OVERLY sweet and had no tartness lacking vinegar and it tasted like triple batter I even had a few small pieces that was All batter and no pork inside. enjoyed dim sum on a Wednesday late morning, place was still pretty busy at lunch time with a 20-30 minute queue. they have a small menu of $4.95 items, mostly shrimp items but include some very popular items like sui mai and har gow. other dim sum items are more pricey, $7.50 and above. Highlights our group enjoyed, the baked egg tart, brisket and tendon with rice crepes, sui mai, rice crepes in xo sauce, and the beef rice crepes. service was very good and food came out quickly for such a busy place. i can see why this place seems to be packed. if you can wait, after 1pm on a weekday seems like a good time to arrive and not have to wait for a table. read more

This review is for take out only which is amazing! This was our 3rd time tonight and the staff is great on the phone to speak to, very polite and makes a customer feel appreciated! The place is always packed and although there was a short delay for our food due to the place being so busy, there are a lot of other stores to stroll over to for some light shopping while you wait! Ordered the chicken fried rice as always as well as the Singapore Noodles. One star I took off as I stressed EXTRA spicy to the kind cashier and somehow, the spice did not happen. This will not deter me from coming back to our friendly neighbourhood Asian eatery! The rice is some of the best we have had in Calgary! Good portions! PS The fortune cookies here are deelish! What to eat in beef country? A constant dilemma during our travels out west. After scouring all the restaurant and review sites - we just relented and decided to go to Ginger Beef. We had visions of deep fried foods drenched in red sauces with a stale fortune cookie. What a pleasure it was when we arrived to see an authentic Chinese establishment. We had a bit of problems with ordering and service, as most of the staff only spoke Chinese and most of the patrons were Chinese too. No biggie - we do this all the time in Toronto. The food was good. Their signature dish is the Ginger Beef (big surprise eh?!?) and though a little too sweet for me, the kids were in it face first! We ordered the hot and sour soup, snow pea leaves in garlic, cantonese chow-mein, chicken with veg and some other dishes. This is my second time there over a span of 2 years and I thought that they would have improved. I had their XLB, 3 course Peking Duck & pot stickers. XLB skin was thick as hell and they over steamed them so the juices all leaked out and was not juicy. Just gross. Peking Duck was just a regular bbq Duck slicked thick and dripping with fat. They should have baked it longer to render the fat and make the skin more crispy. The wrappers was thick and dry. Not even close to Peking style. Calgary doesn't have the best Chinese food offerings but this one is pretty decent relative to the competition available. it's a super busy restaurant so make reservations for dinner and prepare to wait a bit for dim sum. They are known for their xiao long bao Shanghai pork dumplings where there's soup inside along with the pork. The key to this dish is a really savoury and flavourful soup and a melt in your mouth pork filling inside. The soup was good and the dumpling skin was pretty good but the pork ball was more stiff then I expected. Stilll good but not great. We ordered the ginger beef dish only because the restaurant is named after that dish! It was too sweet for my tastes but then again I don't normally order ginger beef for that reason. The lemon chicken was disappointing - lemon sauce was too sweet and the batter chicken had no flavour. For this place, stick with the more Cantonese style dishes - their seafood is exceptional. The halibut and a seafood medley dish with gai lan was really good. The peking duck was on par with most places I've dined at. Excellent dim sum.. staff are friendly I like how the owner help out when it busy and that this is the place that doesn't use peanut on there chicken feet and still pretty tasty in the NW and close to my home because my son has a peanut allergy the only place I can go to when he want to eat chicken feet and dim sum. I minus a star and I will do it for most dim sum place because I really miss the cart pushing I like to look at my choices when it come around to my table. It is much faster way to order all at once but the only thing is when u order everything it come so fast and there so much on my table that I kinda get full fast by looking at it. Pretty damn authentic Chinese food up in the NW! Coming from Vancouver and being spoiled by the vast amount of Asian restaurants, finding a Chinese restaurant that doesn't cater to the western culture is hard to find. The second surprise to the food was the above par service. We we're greeted politely and was asked how our food was. Which NEVER happens in a Chinese restaurant. I've also had dim sum here once and my stomach was satisfied with that meal as well. I would definitely be back again to satisfy my Chinese food craving. read more

We didn't have a very good experience here this last time. Things were definitely different from previous visits. We were celebrating a birthday party so we ordered the dinner for six. NOT GOOD. Lemon chicken was so tough that no one could eat it. Same with the incredibly red in color sweet and sour pork. Inedible. The ginger beef was alright and the stir fry mixed veggies were so so but the shanghai noodles totally lacked flavor. Very disappointing. When we mentioned the problems with the pork and the lemon chicken, they couldn't have even cared less. And don't expect anything if it's a birthday celebration. They don't care. Period. Went for dim sum. Never hiught this place would be serving authentic Chinese cuisine given its restaurant name. So surprised to see that it had dim sum and that it was actually pretty tasty. Lineup on Saturday even past prime time at 1:00 so it must have a decent following. We had the standard har Gow and siu mia which we're both decent. The rice rolls were really well done. And the egg yolk custard steamed bun was something we hadn't had before which was pretty tasty. Overall a solid dim sum place. I've been a number of times but I've really had enough... we ordered their name sake (of course), dumplings, won ton, egg rolls, shredded beef, egg foo young, chicken w ginger & prawns and meat sizzling rice. And ofc chicken fried rice. Not sure where to start Rolls - greasy cabbage only, maybe speck of carrots Dumplings- thick hard skins w little filling ... was it meat? Not sure Wor won ton - salty and bland w soggy, falling apart won tons Shredded beef was ok, likely the best dish Ginger beef was super chewy and over breaded ..especially sad as it is their name sake. Egg foo young very bland and just seemed like it had sat too long before bringing it out. Rice was really dry Chicken was ok, nothing special. What really made me gag though was the washroom, I sure hope they clean their kitchen more often. Service was indifferent. I would say they are no better than what you get at the mall. This restaurant recently opened in the old New Dynasty Restaurant location next to Studio 16. We actually have been there twice already since its opening a week or so ago... once for Dim Sum and once for dinner. The place is already well known, as the place was packed both times we were there. The owners did a good job advertising the place in local newspaper and radio stations. Dim Sum - the restaurant has a good variety of dim sum on the list and prices are reasonable. You can even see your Dim Sum being steamed/prepared in their Dim Sum kitchen, which is behind glass at the back of the restaurant. I was sitting at the table right next to the dim sum kitchen, so we were able to see clearly what they were doing in there. Some of dim sum are freshly made, like Siu Long Bao, Chinese donut rice crepes, and some of the Chinese buns. Back to the food... while they were fresh, they were not the best in the City but definitely above average. We paid about $13 per person with tips included. Now that we have this restaurant here in the area, we have a choice between waiting in long lines for dim sum at T.Pot, or waiting in slightly shorter lines here! Dinner - if you are looking for good Chinese food for dinner in the area, this is definitely one of the better place. It is much better than the restaurant that it replaced, which was catered more to the non-Chinese customers at the expense of its Chinese customers. This new restaurant seems to cater to both, and from line of people waiting for table, they seem to be doing a good job. Service was good for a Chinese restaurant. They have tons of serving staff to look after your needs. The food was good too. There are not many restaurants in the area that does Peking Duck and this one is above average for sure, but not as good as the old Ginger Beef in Sunridge Mall. The Siu Long Bao at dinner time is the same as the Dim Sum ones, except they give you 3 more per order (the price reflects that of course)... and they are freshly made like they were at Dim Sum. The rest of the dishes were good as well. The nearby T.Pot will be the direct competitor to this restaurant when you look at pricing, quality of food, and location. Of the two, I think I prepare this restaurant over T. Pot, because I think this one uses less MSG. The dinner was about $28 per person with tips, but we ordered a lot including desserts. read more

For the ultimate experience you have to get the crispy pecking duck that you cover with hoisin sauce, green onion, and cucumber, and wrap in a burrito bread. It's amazing!
