Ok, I'll admit, I didn't expect much. I also will admit I was very wrong. In Appleton for business, I fired up the iPhone for the local Yelp offerings. Popping up right near my hotel was this Asian Fusion joint. Um...asian fusion in WI? Hey, I'm a biased San Francisco Bay Area guy...seriously? But the yelps were good, so I grabbed my business partner and we headed over. Let's break it down: Food: Excellent. The selection was truly pan-Asian. I was pleasantly surprised to have Genmai Cha tea (toasted rice green tea) as an option; came served in small individual pots, perfectly steeping. Appetizers were steamed dumplings (ok...not spectacular but not bad) and a spicy tuna roll (very fresh for not being near an ocean!). Main courses: crispy Hunan duck, which was spicy, not at all fatty and flavorful; and Korean bol gol gi beef, which was lovingly smothered with well-seasoned veggies. Overall, excellent. Service: spot on. Attentive, slightly pretentious, but not offensively so, and prompt. Plus a clearly relaxed waitstaff, which made for much more entertaining conversation. Décor: What P.F. Chang's wants to be when it grows up. Very tasteful Asian influences, mixed with a modern, slightly hip theme. Could have done without the overstuffed cushions on the odd benches, but hey; grab a table instead of those along the wall, and you'll be fine. The best part? The entire mean was under $50 for two of us. That's a heck of a deal for quality food, great flavors, and good service. Would it compete in the heart of SF? Maybe, but it would be a huge hit in my Marin County neighborhood. Try it. You won't regret it. read more

This was the first time I & my hubby went in there. We were kinda itching to have Asian food, as there are not many choices in Appleton, WI. Coming from Calif with huge # choices to WI was certainly a big hit for both of us foodies, rather I call ourselves fond of a variety of cuisines. We dropped in on Easter! And we found NOBODY in the restaurant and was almost closing time (9pm). We were kinda surprised to be invited and not turned off saying "We are closed or it's Easter". The only regret that we have is we could not taste the soup. "We were told the hot and sour soup (all soups) was trashed, 'cos nobody came in for dinner". Ok, that was a genuine reply. We ordered Malay Curry Chicken wings, Lamb with Scallions -Thai style (comes with white rice or brown rice) with a 4 on a scale of 5 spice factor, 5 being the spiciest. Both the items really up to the mark and no complaints. We expressed ourselves that We came in to try the soup and were disappointed. Guess what ? The waiter told us "Since we could not offer you soup this time, my Manager would like to give you a gift card of $5 to order a soup next time you come in". The Manager came in and gave us the gift card. He also had another surprise "The brownie cupcake with peanut butter mousse" as the dessert - just an appreciation for being the first timers. One of my favorite places to go to in Appleton. They offer such a wide variety of options to please just about anyone. The pad thai is amazing and such a large portion is served. I had enough for another meal. The sushi options are also really great and tasty. They also offer some really fantastic mixed drinks to choice from. Will be back for sure. read more

After my 20th visit to Gingerootz I feel the need to say again how awesome the food and service are here. Some restaurants do service OR food well, but Gingerootz has got both covered in abundance. This is the best restaurant I have eaten at anywhere. I have tried a lot on the menu and I recommend the customize-a-bowl, the Pad Thai, and any of the sushi is awesome. Try the sushi with soy paper (extra $1) if you don't care for the fishy taste of seaweed, which I don't. read more

So good! We came up to Appleton from Milwaukee. Although, there are some honorable mentions in our area, but nothing quite compares to the quality and freshness of Gingerootz. We needed take out so delivery was ideal. This being not my first time to Gingerootz I couldn't stop thinking about it once we arrived into town so with that impulse in mind, we were only 3 people but we ordered a hella lot of fresh, delicious and satisfying eats; including: Wor Wonton Soup- This was one of my favorites! Broth has a great amount of depth without too much salt. A rich and satisfying flavor. The soup includes chopped carrot, mushroom, spring onion, chive, pork, shrimp and a scrumptious wonton. Comes in a cup or bowl the bowl was quart sized- nice portion. Do this. Crab Rangoon - Yummy! Not a lot of crab, but the flavor is nice and the wrappers of high quality. Not greasy and a crispy, savory addition. Chicken lettuce wraps - Well seasoned minced chicken, water chestnut, scallion and mushroom. Cool lettuce wraps for wrapping. I maybe could have used a little sauce for this, but maybe I'm being overzealous. General Tso's chicken - Big chunks of chicken in a light breeding and approachable sauce that was in a non gelatinous sauce - thank goodness! I really dislike sauce that jiggles like jello. The sauce was light in spice but the chicken itself of was well seasoned. Came with fresh steamed broccoli. Yum! Mongolian Beef - Tender high- quality beef chunked with onion lots of onion. Sauce is light but personally would have liked a little more sweet and salty aspect to the sauce. I didn't get that mongo flavor that I really wanted. That's me being nit-picky. Crystal Shrimp/lau chow Shrimp - We did half and half order. We liked the lau chow Shrimp more. Nice dish overall! Full of flavor! Shrimp are big! read more

It's really odd to me that this place has negative reviews. Gingerootz is the best asian restaurant in the state. I'm currently living in southern California and am having trouble finding any asian restaurant that can compete. I used to be a fairly frequent visitor to this place and would receive friendly nods and greetings from the waiters who recognized me. The service was always great and the meals were top notch. I used to drag people here for dinner if they had never had a meal at Gingerootz. We never had a bad experience, our friends always had positive things to say. It's horrible to stereotype, but I'm guilty right here. To me, dining in Wisconsin is solidified in the guise of the Wisconsin Supper Club. Where I would want to indict restos anywhere else for the non-existent decor, the common service, and the oh-so-safe menus that mark the roadside wonders in the Badger State, they are the charm, the bedrock and sine qua non of Northwoods dining. I think it has to do with the fact that I find the folks of Wisconsin are the least pretentious, down-to-earth, most NOT full-of-shit folks in the Union. Such is the granite in my mind that supports this ideal. This conviction automatically makes me suspect of any place up North that smacks of style, fashion or trend. If the rug matches the walls, and the place settings are unlike something you might find in your own cupboard, run like hell. If there is clever lighting, clever furniture or serious art, get back in your car and look for a place that has a hand-lettered "Fish Fry AYCE" sign in the window. If a quick scan of the parking lot reveals more Audis, Lexuses and Beamers than Pickup-trucks and unwashed SUV's, keep driving. I'm sure that Milwaukee and Madison prolly have a few sophisticated Boites and Bistros. After all, there are Doctors, Lawyers, Executives and other Moneyed types that need a place to take their mistresses to on Fridays, and go through the motions with their Wives on Saturdays. They should all know there are folks at a shithole on the outskirts of LaCrosse that are eating better than they are, and a family of 4 can eat there for the same sum Dr. Cheddar will leave as a tip at the Upsnoot Room. But I digress. I'm sure the folks who are behind the Gingerootz are very nice and well-meaning. I'm sure they thought long and hard about the kicky name, and the notion of doing an "upscale" Oriental would place them at the vanguard of Appleton dining. The place looks real pretty, as did the Girl at the front counter who was trying WAY too hard to be a sophisto. Appleton Dining... I had a "Summer roll" (one better than a"Spring Roll", apparently) same quality as you'd find at any nominal Thai. Greasy Mayonnaise Shrimp the same (shitty) quality you find at low-rent Chinese Buffets. And perfectly tasteless Fried Rice. With a nice Cosmopolitan Bill. What the hell was I thinking? read more

This has been my favorite restaurant for several years. I always get the same thing, General Tso's Chicken and crab rangoons because I have not found another place that compares. The chicken is lightly battered with large chunks of white meat. I have brought several different friends over the years and they've all enjoyed their dishes as well. I was in town and met up with buddy who lives in the area. I looked up places on Yelp and asked if GingeRootz was a good choice. He said it was a solid choice, so we stopped by for dinner. I had the Bul Go GI Beef and he had the Wok Seared Lamb with Scallions. We were both pleased with our choices. It definitely lives up to it's high rating. The price was around $40 with tax and tip, which was very reasonable. If my travels ever bring me back to Appleton, I'll be stopping by again. read more

Absolutely on of our most favorite dining places in the Fox Cities - where there has been a growing abundance of Asian cuisine options - GingeRootz is just wonderful. A short stay in the bar should be added to your plans and I would suggest their signature "Crystal Shrimp" along with a nice white wine (selection is better than average). This appetizer is best when warm so I prefer it as a starter rather than main course. The entree selection is diverse, and even your non-Asian dining friends will love the black bean sauce Salmon - What a great meal. Service is also top shelf, where the waitstaff are knowledgeable and friendly. It's easy to make this place part of your regular dining routine - it's that good! read more

Crowded but it was a Friday night when we went. We had reservations and our table was an itty bitty thing close to where they prep the food. I didn't really care about that too much since I was there for the food. Staff was friendly and fast and we were ushered to our spot right away. I was STARVING when I got there and since I haven't tried it out yet, I opted to order something that no one could possibly get wrong. I ordered unagi, shrimp tempura and rice and my friend ordered duck. It was awful. The tempura was oily the unagi was sort of scorched and dry. The duck was a hideous orange and rubbery. While in the bar the bartenders took good care of us and we didn't need to ask for anything they were aware of their customer's needs. Once seated our waitress, arrived after 10 min. Pre-review warning: your experience will vary depending on what you order. First time I went to GingeRootz in a long time was at lunch with my mother. We both had the Crystal Shrimp and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also got the Mango Fusion sushi roll; it was a bit too sweet and overwhelming for my taste (but it was good otherwise). The next time we went I got the lettuce wraps for us as an appetizer (wonderful!!) and I ordered Mongolian Beef while my mother had the Pad Thai. Her meal was ok, nothing to write home about. But my Mongolian Beef, though the beef was tender, had an odd fishy taste to it that really spoiled the enjoyment of the meal. This isn't the first place that had fishy tasting beef. So did Texas Roadhouse a couple years ago. Restaurant owners: CHECK YOUR SOURCES! If the cattle were fed fish meal they will taste weird. I will next time stick with what I know GingeRootz does well and that is the lettuce wraps and crystal shrimp. read more

Our annual Christmas Eve Asian cuisine tradition led us to GingeRootz yesterday afternoon. The service was impeccable, however we were one of only four-or-so groups dining at the time. The atmosphere was clean and inviting. My 8-month-old loved the fish tank as well. Our group of 5 1/2 patrons skipped the appetizers and went straight for the entrees. After reading several reviews here, I determined that I should order the Crystal Shrimp. I did opt for the fried rice rather than the white, a salad, and kept the crab rangoons. Everything was prepared perfectly and delicious. Everyone in my group had the same quality experience. Following dinner we were able to spend time visiting and even had the hostess take a family photo. Great time here. I really can't wait to go back! read more

I've been here at least 6 times this year. I don't know why I waited so long to try it! The entrees haven't been disappointing. The only problem is there isn't a lot of variety. The sushi is very good and is at room temperature, not very cold (which is good). The mango is my favorite. The specialty sushi gets expensive, however. I haven't waited long to be served, on most visits, but it does get busy and I've had to wait a few times now. Overall, highly recommend. read more

Gingerootz has a great lunch selection, with a variety of dishes listed on the menu, or you can specify your own stir fry with your choice of meat and vegetables. Happy hour is probably the highlight though. They offer appetizers off the menu to equal your bar menu. The lettuce wraps and calamari are outstanding! One night during happy hour they have chair massages in the bar: $10 for 10 minutes, including a drink of your choice. This is expecially a great deal if you order wine like I do. The dinner menu has a good variety of options... some are a little pricey for what you get. Staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very good, with a modern feel, bright colored walls, and funky light fixtures. I like it there, particularly in the bar area which is cozy. I came here with an old high school friend and we loved the food but the excellent service is what blew me away. We were seated quickly and began catching up for about ten minutes before a server came to us and apologized. I guess our server forgot our table but we hadn't noticed the wait at all. These people then went out of their way to make up for a mistake we had hardly noticed. They took our order and pushed it to the front so we would get it right away. The manager then came and apologized to us personally and gave us a complimentary slice of their specialty red velvet fudge cake which was divine! I was 19 at the time and its rare to find restaurants who put that much into their customer service even if we were "just kids" and didn't spend that much. Appleton's a little town in a rural area, but there are some really good restaurants here. I've learned not to be pessimistic, and if Yelp has several highly positive reviews, you can pretty much take it to the bank. I was in town for the EAA AirVenture and had some great meals at several local restaurants. GingeRootz is an attractive restaurant with good service, an extensive menu, a perplexing name, and a surprisingly extensive wine list. Rachel the waitress was helpful and friendly. The food was tasty, with large portions, and moderately spicy. The only disconcerting part of the experience was being checked on several times with people that had earphones with coiled cords behind their ears like Secret Service agents. I sure they meant well and perhaps they parked their black helicopter behind the restaurant so they wouldn't alarm the natives. read more

So I'm not going to lie, I tried to go to two other restaurants before ending up here with a ravishing appetite for asian food. I was a little disappointed. I enjoyed my meal. It was served quickly and hot. The waitstaff was friendly, but the food just didn't hit the spot. I had crab Rangoon's and sesame chicken, two of my favorite things to eat. The Rangoons were served almost immediately and weren't warm in fact they were quite cold and I honestly didn't like the taste of them, they tasted kind of sour, I don't know if it was a brand of cream cheese I just wasn't used to or if it was an off batch or something but they just tasted kind of weird. There was an odd powder residue on them also. Another thing that kind of put me off what the price. I payed about 7.60 for six and there was no sauce. I did find what I assumed to be a all around mango dipping sauce that was on the table that did help with the sort of bland sour flavor I was getting. I don't know I just didn't like them. Now for the rest of the meal. I did enjoy my entree much more then my appetizer. The chicken was hot and juicy, the breading was not what I normally would have expected but it wasn't terrible, the thing I didn't like was the sauce. Once again it wasn't terrible, it was pretty sweet witch is what I expected but the sauce itself wasn't that great it just was kind of bland. There was a bit of spice to it witch I liked but all around the meal just wasn't that great. I just was expecting more. I think I will come again, there is a lot more to try and I have heard a lot of great things about this place. It was really obvious my chicken was made to order and the fried rice was delicious. We ate at this restaurant for the first time Nov. 11, 2019. I give it 5 stars. Very clean restaurant. The Owner is friendly as well as the waitress we had. My wife and I, while traveling through Appleton to Green Bay, stopped in for some take out and our experience was miles ahead of our last experience. Even as takeout the Mongolian Beef was phenomenal (almost as good as the habit forming P.F. Chang's) and the XO Scallops and Shrimp was very tasty. We also had the traditional wok fired rice which was a very good fried rice. One of the unique things you can get in one if their bowls is tofu noodles instead of rice. If you have never tried this do yourself a favor and try them. More places need to offer this option instead of rice? We were both very happy with our latest experience and will be back. read more

Maybe offering to make up for it in the way of a comped meal or discount to try and regain their business makes more sense. Otherwise leaving these reply comments only seem half hearted and patronizing. People seem impressed with this place, those people don't impress me. This place really isn't all that great. I've been here a few times and the service is always sub par. Today I was sat and waited 5 minutes before my server arrived while I sat there, was close to just leaving. They up charge you for everything here and unless it's in fine print on the menu they don't give you a heads up. Do I really care about 50¢ for an egg roll instead of a crab Rangoon or 50¢ for brown rice instead of white rice? No, but a polite "there is an additional charge for that" would be appreciated and somewhat customary. Server never checked on if anything else was needed or if I needed a refill. First off, we were seated promptly but that was probably the high point in our dining experience. The service was horrendous. We were there on a Friday night around 8 pm. There was no silverware nor were we asked if we wanted appetizers. Our waiter took our order after what seemed like forever. We got our food but still no silverware until we finally requested it. Not once were we asked how our food was. Our waiter barely looked like he cared. He just refilled our waters, once. Food was ok, I had the pad thai and it was too sweet for my taste. I had to give up on this place (and I had been a weekly customer of theirs). Sesame chicken has small-medium size bones in it?? I can see if happen maybe once, but this is 4 times now. Complained to the supervisor and even emailed him pictures of the rather large bone. But it's a popular and busy place, who has time to really talk with the chefs?? But 4 times??? There won't be a chance for a 5th. I'm done with them. Beware of the sesame chicken. I'm going somewhere else. Doris N---please don't make me out to be a liar. The entrees and sushi are always delicious. Due to Covid, we always do takeout. The last two times we've ordered we've been told the wait would be 30-35 minutes, but it's been closer to an hour. It's understandable to have to wait extra time because I'm sure there are staffing issues, but double the wait time is a bit too much. read more
