Every now and then, during strawberry season, we pop into Gizdich Ranch, seeking out a Strawberry Pie like one that we got about 8 years ago. While we didn't see it listed on the menu board, when my wife asked the order taker, she knew exactly what we wanted and told her that the wait would be 15 minutes as they made them to order. OMG, it was beautiful! Loaded with fresh strawberries and just enough glaze to bind it, the glaze did not overwhelm the taste of the strawberries. You can't really slice it as created. Instead, you pick off some of the fruit on top until it's down to a manageable height and then we use a large spoon to parse it out. Whipped cream? Ice cream? Both would be excellent accompaniments to be sure, but we used neither. read more

This place is a favorite stop of mine for whenever I am passing by Watsonville. On this trip, I was able to try their strawberry rhubarb pie, which was recommended to me by a friend. The sweetness of the strawberry paired well with the darkness of the rhubarb, so it was quite delicious. I also tried their very very pie, which is a combination of berries with their famous Olailliberries, and I still like the Olallieberry-only version better; it is sweeter. This was also my first time coming in from Gilroy instead of Watsonville, and I would not recommend this route if you have a person in your car who will get carsick. The road coming in from Gilroy is much more windy. The service was really friendly and accepting of questions even though the sign said they didn't have any left, and I was able to walk away with two whole Olallieberry pies. I really wanted to get my sister an apricot pie, but they didn't have a whole one, only a couple of slices, so I ended up with a "Very Berry". All the pies looked good, but I won't know how it tastes since it's not for me. My friends ordered slices and they seemed a bit small; the cost per slice is more than for a quarter of a whole pie, but the size seemed much smaller. I guess it pays to buy the whole pie! Very popular shop. There was a line when we arrived and a line when we left. The pie shop is next door to the store where they sold apples and fresh apple juice. Oh my, what a fun place. Coming here made me feel like I was on vacation. The pies are delightfully fresh and delicious and you got to try the apple slush float! It's like a root beer float but it's apple slush and vanilla ice cream. Once you have it you will dream about it. Besides the restaurant where you can order fresh pie by the slice, drinks, and fresh fruits farmers market style, they have a store in the building across where you will find lots of unique gifts. The U-Pick apple picking was a fun experience. It's $2.50/lb and we were able to hand pick 12 apples for a little under $12. Bring your own bag/basket since they do charge for bags for a minimal fee. It was cool being able to freely roam around the various apple trees and personally hand pick the ones you want. I'm not much of a raw apple eater, but I did enjoy the red delicious apple which was nice and fresh, crisp, and sweet. The staff at check-in were all nice and welcoming which is always a plus! This place also has a gift shop and pie shop which gets very crowded and has long wait times. For two slices of pies we waited about 45 minutes, but if you want a whole pie I suggest going into the gift shop as the line is much shorter/quicker. I tried the Dutch apple pie and the double berry dutch apple pie which were both fresh, warm, and had a nice mixture of tart/sweet. The vanilla ice cream really balanced out all of the flavors and I also enjoyed the cinnamon crumble topping/crust on both of the pies. There's plenty of picnic-style seating indoors and outdoors, parking is minimal on dirt road, and I do suggest coming early to avoid crowds/lines. Overall, apple picking was a fun experience for the first time and I for sure know the apples we picked are fresh. I really wanted to like Gizdich Ranch because the pie was excellent, and that's the only reason this review isn't one star. Unfortunately, our experience with the owner completely ruined our visit. We were in the designated kids' play area, and my children were simply playing like normal kids. They weren't being destructive, fighting, or damaging anything. The owner, an older woman, came over and repeatedly told them to stop playing because they were "playing too hard." She had very little patience with the children and made my family feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. It wasn't just my kids either. Another child who was also playing was told to stop as well. I witnessed the child's parents explain that their child was autistic and didn't fully understand what was being asked. Instead of showing compassion or patience, the owner responded that she didn't care and told the family they needed to leave. That was heartbreaking to witness. A place that advertises itself as family-friendly should actually welcome families and understand that children will play, especially in an area meant for kids. Instead, it felt like the owner was annoyed by the very presence of children. The pie was delicious, but good food doesn't make up for being treated poorly. I won't be returning, and I'll be spending my money at businesses that are welcoming, patient, and kind to families. read more

We decided to stop by here after our lunch for pies. There was an antique shop, gift shop, and pie shop there. We ordered the Blackberry Pie and Dutch Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream. The pies were freshly baked and weren't overly sweet, which we really liked. We went to the gift shop and wanted to buy their Apple Juice. However, we ended up not buying it because we weren't heading home right away and didn't want it sitting in a hot car. We walked by the office and the owners ( father and son) happened to be there. Found out about this strawberry picking field from my sister-in-law. Me and my family came early on Saturday morning on the second week of strawberry season. There were lots of strawberries to pick, and they were perfectly ripe. There were lots of rows to choose from. Even though there were a lot of people, the place didn't feel crowded. Parking is free. Once you park, you will climb a few steps up to the field. At the first tent, you can choose to purchase a cardboard box for strawberry picking for $2. You also have the option to bring your own bucket or bin for strawberry picking. After that, the people at the tent will point you to a second station, where the person will go over how to pick strawberries without ruining the plant. They will also advise to pick from the back and work your way to the front rows. At the end of the strawberry picking, you head to the last tent where the strawberries get weighed. Strawberries that you pick cost $3.75 per pound. Overall, it was a fun and neat experience. I recommend going early in the morning so that there are fewer people. If you have babies, I recommend bringing a carrier. There is space for strollers around the perimeter of the field, but it is very muddy. read more

What a fun place to visit and grab some yummy fresh pie. We came to try apple picking and it was fun. You walk the orchard and pick your own apples. They have different varieties of apples. We went for the Gala and Fuji. Again the also have different versions of Gala as well. We finish the picking by stopping by there store front to have a slice of fresh pie and a whole pie to go home with us. We had a slice of apple crumble just the right amount of balance of sweet and tart. I had the berry apple crumble slice and love that. Similar sweet and tart. Kind of overrated, the foods overpriced and the owner is extremely rude. They're never very efficient at getting the pies and orders out and the line takes super long. The workers were fine, I feel bad for them having to work there. They always seem understaffed and stressed out. The ambiance is nice, just an old school orchard feeling. That owner though, if you see her avoid her at all costs, she acts like she's out of her mind. My friend accidentally broke something small in the gift shop, the owner lady of course yelled at us even though he gladly payed for it. We were being nothing but polite, yet she was incredibly rude and hostile. He was going to take the pieces back to try to glue it back together, but she refused to give the pieces back (even though he payed for it) and the owner lady said she was going to glue it to try and sell it again. Kind of a wack little local business to be honest, I'd only recommend going there once, after one visit you've seen all there is to see anyways. Heard about this place through Check Please, and thought it would be fun to check out on our way home from our weekend getaway in Monterey. This is a cute Apple Farm in Watsonville. We were hoping to make the U-pick apple season, but we missed it, it was already done for the year by the Columbus Day holiday weekend in October. We were also too early for the pumpkins that I guess they have too each year? Even though we went on their off season, they are still open for their bakery and store. At the bakery, you can order pies whole or by the slice, with ice cream on the side. They have a variety of pies to choose from too, including apples, berries, apples and berries, pumpkin, rhubarb, and a few more. We got one slice each of the apple and berries, my favorite being the berries! The bakery set up is quite grungy, located inside their cold barn, with plastic outdoor furniture. They do have a clean bathroom though, which makes this a great stop on the way home. I also enjoyed their store, which had a variety of different jam flavors, and best of all, apples by the lb! Their honey crisp apples were so delicious and reasonable, only $1.50/lb. Highly recommended to stop here. I wish we had made the apple picking season though, maybe next time! read more

The crunchy top was so yummy. Then we each picked a slice for home: I wanted to try their regular apple pie and Hubby picked the Very Berry (blackberry, raspberry, and olallieberry). Some think California's greatest industry is tech, others think it's lobotomizing entertainment courtesy of the Kardashian family, we think it's the strawberries. The drive to Gizdich Ranch transports you to a side of California you don't really see all that often, that being the true backbone of the state, its agricultural complex. The area is littered with farms and workers toiling over the harvest bringing in what amounts to fantastic produce. In what amounts to be a fun activity for the family, you too can pick those berries at Gizdich Ranch, and for a price that makes it all worth it. The parking at the strawberry field is just across from the main farmhouse and there was a good availability of spots to choose from. Upon arriving they will either supply you with a basket (cost not known) or you start with your own at which point they will weigh it in order to exactly measure how much you pick. They have a selection of multiple berries to pick from including strawberries, boysenberries, and one last kind of berry that we can't remember; everyone really just goes for the strawberries anyways. The berries are arranged in rows that stretch back a good amount so there should be good options regardless of which row you head down. The berries range in all kinds of sizes and colors and are absolutely delicious, almost candy like in how sweet they are. We like to load up on them to bring back to family so we ended up with about 8 pounds of strawberries total and the price was honestly very fair for the amount that we picked. At checkout they offer free water and have trash cans in case you want to toss the remains of any berries you shamefully ate during the time you were out there. Also of note is the fact that they are dog friendly, how awesome is that? All this is just one part of the experience though as back across the farm is their pie and baked good section. That part features limited parking but the interior of the farmhouse is very rustic and quaint. We wanted to grab some apple pie but they were unfortunately out of it along with the dutch apple. They tend to sell out of pies and only had one or two kinds available when we were there which was a major letdown. We can't blame them because they're a small operation, but they are very popular so it would be great to know ahead of time what their availability looks like. The last little bit of the farm is a gift shop area featuring different treats and products created by the local produce. The selection is solid and there's some interesting finds there so make sure not to skip out on it. Altogether, Gizdich Ranch is a fantastic activity to do as a couple or with family. There's a lot to do and see for such a small farm and it's always great to support small businesses and local farmers so if you're in the area it's a great trip to make! read more

There's also a shop where you can buy antiques as well as apples and various jams and trinkets. You can also get apples by the pound as well as frozen berries! We opted for fresh pie on this occasion, and it was quickly served with a huge scoop of ice cream. There is ample seating inside and outside. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside and enjoyed our pies. They were delicious, not too sweet in the filling but super sweet in the crumble on top. We have been coming here for the past 7+ years for U-pick strawberries. We love this place because it is so much fun. We try to get there as early as possible in the morning, pick strawberries for about 1 hour and then stop by their pie store to buy apple pie and fresh apple juice. We head back to San Jose before noon so we don't hit traffic. We bring our own containers which they weigh at check in area. Really fun little detour in Watsonville! We learned about this place after seeing some of their jams for sale at Pezzini Farms. Unfortunately early November (when we visited) is too late for any of the U-Picks, but there's still plenty to see. There's a barn that sells fresh picked apples and jams, an antique shop that has a number of interesting oddments from times gone by and a deli that sells freshly made pies, ice creams and juices. We tried the olallieberry ice cream on top of Dutch Apple Pie. Really loved the ice cream and the pie was good (although not anything special). The pies are amazing... ordered a strawberry tart, which is basically an individual strawberry pie (they don't sell that one by the slice), and strangers around me were cracking up at my "over the moon smile!" I was so-so very happy! Since that year (that was in the late 90's), I've gone back with friends and family many-many times... we all looked forward to "strawberry day!" When I think about the trips, I remember all the kids having strawberry juice caked faces and huge smiles whilst sleeping in the car on the ride back home! Very fond memories that I will always cherish... Pros- the pies are freshly made each day and extremely tasty! The apple slushy is super refreshing (bring coolers, so you can stock up on their apple juice and make them at home!), the outdoor area is a fun spot for kids to run around in and for adults to just sit and relax! Cons- the deli sandwiches are ok, but I would recommend bringing your own picnic lunch since that will likely be much better (just save room for their pies/tarts/dumplings and of course drinks/slushes!) This place is amazing and so scenic! We wanted the Ollalieberry pie and Boysenberry pie but they were just starting to make a fresh batch when we arrived. We don't see these berries on the east coast so I was super excited to try them. Unfortunately we had a biking tour awaiting us so we had to get what was available - no regrets because everything was so good! We got a couple of double berry pies, a cherry and a dutch apple pie. Luckily they had Ollalieberry ice cream which we got to share between the four of us. The dutch apple was probably the best apple pie I have ever had! The sandwich was delicious! My only complaint is that they added tomatoes even though I did not ask for some. For fruit, I received some cut up strawberries. We got the picnic lunch and a slice of pie for $22, which was perfect for two of us to share. Parking can be a bit hectic depending on how busy it is. It was a warm day and it was very stuffy indoors. There is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. You receive the pie at the window right after ordering, and the sandwiches will be taken to you once ready. Your name is added to the order form. Since we were sitting outside, we did not know that our sandwich was ready as we did not hear them call our names. However, we did see that staff members were going outside to find the customers sitting outdoors so we were expecting that too. We unfortunately did not experience that, we had to ask for it and were told by the staff member that she had been looking for us. However, no attempts to find us outdoors were made.
