Great experience taking a Meditation Globe glass blowing class at the Glass Academy! Beautiful space, and fun to browse all the goods. The class itself was really fun, and was a great balance between being very hands on in crafting your own art piece while also being comfortably guided for safety and to make sure you make something that actually looks good so you'll enjoy what you take home. I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience or wanting to try a new art form! Only thing is that it's a fairly pricey experience, so might not plan on being a recurring activity. read more

This was my first glass blowing experience and I would happily go back to take more classes! My mom told me she wanted to do a glass blowing class for Mother's Day so I planned ahead, researched a few options, and came across this recommended place! I was happy to see they have several different classes, including a Mother's Day heart making workshop--and don't worry, this is definitely for beginners and newbies! The whole class lasted about a little over an hour and it starts with a tour of the place and then leads into the actual glass blowing activity. The space is very cool by the way. You can see dozens of hand made pieces (and purchase them) and they just added a bar and lounge that will be accessible for events and reserving too! For the glass blowing portion, they have two workstations that can probably accommodate up to 4 guests each, and two glass blowing instructors so each group of up to 4 can have attention, and I thought this worked out well. They start the glass blowing portion with a demo and then allow you to get involved (with lots of guidance and assistance for very levels of comfort and handling). Our instructor was very friendly and super engaging, which I appreciated because I know my mom was a little nervous at times. If you're doing a class, do please take their recommendation seriously of bringing water because it will get hot when you're in the workstation! Overall, both my mom and I were very pleased with our Mother's Day hearts and even though they take time to cool, we were both happy when we got the call the next day that they were ready for pick up (you can also do delivery too). This is a review of their customer Appreciation event. It was only one day and I knew it would be exercise for the Mastercard. But the deals make it worth going. I was one of many who did. I drew a slip for 20% off my purpose but shopping the website got 30% but you just choose the type of item not the one you pick from many. With my reusable shopping bag I got a few visits ago, I got another 5% off. I was also about to put my name in 3 drawings and depending on how much I brought, a free gift. It was hard choosing just a few items. I knew I wanted a snail and when I didn't see the color I wanted an employee went to where they had more and brought out 3 from I choose 1. The eggs was also something I didn't already have 1 from here so I picked 1 that looked cute on all sides. Even though I already had to purple pumpkin ( 1st thing I brought from here), I had to get a different style of pumpkin. I also grabbed a purple slug pin since I have one of those. When I checked out, I was given a slip to go to the free item with purchase and I brought enough to choose anything on the table. One had just the shape and feel of one of the chicks (everything was wrapped in paper so it was a surprise of what you were getting). It feels good to support a local craft business while getting items for your home that makes you smile. I have 8 of their works. Have to rest the Mastercard for a while but I will be back after that especially for their customer Appreciation day. read more

I've been a customer of the Glass Academy for years, but I just made my first really big purchase and customized piece with them. It was a great experience! And bonus...it was a safe shopping experience and entertaining during the pandemic! I wanted to order a glass mug for my father for Father's Day. He's a member of Dearborn Brewing's Mug Club, Andover component of that experience is having your own personal Glass Academy designed mug that they store at Dearborn Brewing. Since he can't enjoy his Dearborn Brewing visits during the pandemic, I thought the next best thing would be to get him his own Glass Academy mug he can use at home along with some Dearborn brewing beer (picked up curbside). First, I had a phone consultation with Chris at Glass Academy about the design of the mug. I wanted a dragon theme since my father likes dragons, and I asked for blue and green colors. Chris said they could use a pattern/texture that looks like dragon scales and an iridescent dragon tail handle. I was sold (or rather the mug was!). They emailed me a PayPal invoice, so it was easy contactless payment. After looking through pictures on their Facebook, I spotted a mug with an interesting swirl of colors and asked them if they could do something similar and they were happy to update my request. Now, the fun part - the Glass Academy has been hosting Facebook Live videos of their glassblowing in progress every Tuesday night. So, I was able to see the mug I requested being made live. They did an excellent job of filming it and explaining what they were doing and how they were making the mug throughout. I was very impressed and it was so cool to virtually experience the creation process. I can't wait to share the video with my father when I give him the mug. The experience and entertainment from the live video definitely contribute to the overall value and satisfaction of the purchase. I was able to pick up the mug just a few days later. They accommodated curbside pickup and packaged up the mug very nicely with colored tissue paper. It turned out fantastic! This will make a very memorable and special gift. What a fun date night! My wife and I bought a Groupon for a class to come in and make glass icicle ornaments for our Christmas tree. The building itself was awesome, very industrial looking, yet welcoming. The staff was very knowledgeable, and definitely made the process look easier than it is. It's quite an art form, but they do a fantastic job of helping and guiding as you make the glass into its shape/form. I would highly recommend the classes and events here, and we will definitely be looking for chances to return and make something else. read more

My wife has talked about wanting to try glassblowing for a few years now, and I finally gifted her a glassblowing experience at Glass Academy for Christmas. We specifically did the Meditation Globe class. We really didn't know what to expect going into it, but it blew any expectations we had out of the water. The class started with a great tour from Bess, explaining the prices they had for sale in the gallery, the history of the company, and some future plans for the space. Joey led the class, with assistance from Matt. Both did a great job of explaining the process and helping where necessary. My wife and I both expected that we would be watching the instructors and occasionally help with the process, but it was, much to our excitement, the opposite. We were able to do most of the process on our own, with the instructors helping us where we needed it. Definitely an enjoyable class, and we will absolutely be back for other classes. read more

I made a glass bead! And it's pretty enough to wear! The Twirl Bead and Bubble class ($49.00 on Groupon) is super fun. Both instructors were extremely knowledgeable, fun, and patient. The gallery itself is full of beautiful objects, from beads, to vases, mugs, and more. It's well worth a visit and hubby and I will return for the upcoming Pumpkin Fest. read more

My first visit here was not for a class, but for their pop-up super sale. I heard about the pop up sale when I was looking into signing up for a class. While waiting for them to open, one of the ladies next to me was explaining how she found a Groupon for some of their classes. I've never used Groupon, nor do I have any affiliation with Groupon, but if you are looking to take a class and the prices are a bit out of your range, this is something you may want to consider. The inside space seems much larger than it looks from the outside. Parking is street parking, so long as you can find it. The people who were working here (not sure if these were all employees, maybe some were volunteers or members?) were all very smiley and pleasant, but didn't say much (awkward). My background is in engineering and material science. It is my job to understand and prevent things, like thermal shock- the phenomenon that occurs when, for example, your glass mug shatters because you poured boiling water in it, from happening. Why am I telling you this? There were several people looking at the glass mugs, talking about how they were going to us them for their hot tea. Pouring a boiling hot liquid into cold glass will more than likely shatter it (unless it is specially treated, like Pyrex). NOT ONE of the 6 or so people standing around the tables wearing Glass Academy t-shirts chimed in to tell these customers that this was a bad idea, and that these mugs were not for hot liquids. They just stood there, smiling. Considering these mugs normally sell for $100, that was a real bummer to see. I'd hate to spend 100 bucks on something that I won't even get to enjoy for 5 minutes. Anyway, I still had a good time seeing the Glass Academy and I do plan on signing up for one of their classes in the near future read more

The instructors were great, but I was unimpressed with the other staff. We were three minutes late due to Telegraph and Square Lake Road traffic. When we came in, they didn't believe we were registered despite me repeatedly explaining that I had registered by phone five days before. They'd overbooked the class because they didn't know we were coming (normally take 4 students only and we made six). While I was showing them my e-mailed receipt, they conducted the tour without us. Then, while we were waiting on nametags (they insist), they STARTED THE CLASS without us. Luckily, one of the girls in the class said "hey they're in here too". I get that we were late (by THREE minutes), but I apologized profusely and explained that the 1 hour twenty minute drive had taken 1 hour and forty minutes instead. The class was a neat hands on experience and fun, but this was certainly not the upbeat friendly experience I was hoping for when I purchased the classes as part of my daughter's 16th birthday present. read more

I hesitate to write a review because I'd love to give the place another try ... however ... First, the decor was AWESOME! I absolutely loved the work and retail space! Overall, the experience was good, but it seems to me you could have a really great thing going on there as far as classes go, but my experience just kinda missed the mark. To begin, the 10 a.m. Tour/Class didn't begin until almost 10:15. Then, they gave us a tour of the store. This really wasn't necessary, since 1)we had more than enough time waiting for class to start to look around and 2)the girl giving the tour could work on her friendliness skills - she just didn't seem very interested in what she was doing. I'm trying to nicely say, she could've smiled a lot more since she is in the service industry. Logan was awesome! He made a great presentation and was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his work. Jason was also available to help you make your product. He was a nice enough guy, but I watched him work with the first person and he literally did almost ALL of the work. People pay for the experience, not to stand close and watch someone else do the work. Jason cut out a couple steps (for the same project) that allowed people to really work and "feel" the glass - which was what most people want to do I would imagine. I was very disappointed for that person, or anyone who had him. I waited for Logan and he allowed every one of his people to do as much as they possibly could. I was not disappointed with my experience with Logan! He was great. Again, overall, it was okay, but I could not recommend the experience to anyone, especially if they didn't get an instructor like Logan. It felt like the "tour" was a time-filler and completely unnecessary. Show us more about the actual glass blowing experience and teach us about the chemicals, chemical reactions, etc. Like I said, I'd love to try the Happy Hour ... but, probably won't because I wouldn't want to invite friends (who have to pay a small chunk of change) and not be GUARANTEED an awesome experience. read more

This was so much fun! I brought my boyfriend's mom for the Vinotappo class and we both had a great time. They give you a nice tour and then teach you about the process of glass blowing. You get to pick your colors, shape, etc and then the instructor helps you make your own. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and did a great job explaining the process to us. The class size is small which makes the process pretty quick. They have really beautiful glass items available to buy and several other classes available. I think this would also be good for a date night. I can't wait to pick up my wine stopper and see how it turned out! read more

I came here along with Jessica J. and Chris W. Though the snow was a little freakish (well, I guess not that freakish for Michigan) that day, we had a great time! Just don't let Chris near any ice sculptures! It was warm and cozy inside the academy. Of course, part of that warmth could have been the heat radiating from the giant firing ovens they used for glasswork. We were able to watch a couple of demos, which was really fascinating. It brought back memories of childhood -- watching the glass blowers at Greenfield Village. Though for some reason (maybe because they didn't have to dress in period costume), the guys giving the demo here struck me as more bad-ass! The bazaar itself was really fun, and though I know the studio isn't set up like that on a regular day, you do get the feeling that the academy and people who work there are very community minded. There seem to be some fun opportunities for kids, and there are a plethora of classes overall. I really want to take a neon (yes, neon!) making class if I can figure out when. Overall, I was very impressed with the friendly and community oriented approach of this studio. I'll definitely be back, either for a class or for another special event. read more

I came here for the 2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar with a couple other Yelpers. The Glass Academy offers classes in: Stained glass, Neon, Torchwork, Fusing and Glassblowing. We watched a glassblowing demonstration, which was quite impressive. I didn't know there was so much involved in Glass Blowing and Sculpting and it made me find a new appreciation for the art. The Bazaar was catered by Westborn Market, so there were alot of yummy eats. Some of the crafts that were displayed were: Stained Glass, Jewelry, Glass Ornaments, and lots of other Arts and Crafts. I went back home to help out some friends. I saw their flyer at the airport. I've always wanted to take a glass class. Not something I can easily do around a bunch of people. Signed a friend and myself up for the Leaf class. It was so much fun!! Last class of the season so it was just us 2. Nicole helped us get signed in and after the class she also helped me purchase some other glass gifts from the shop. I can't wait to be able to go back again. What I great time. Awesome people. They made a chalice for my wife at last years Renaissance Festival. After a few months, the base separated from the top of the chalice. After sending the Glass Academy a few pictures of the break, they explained that it was probably due to improper annealing (cooled too fast). Without skipping a beat, they told me they would remake the chalice, free of charge! I just picked up the new chalice and it looks just as good if not better than the original. I went to the Glass Academy's Christmas Show yesterday and it was really nice. They had a variety of beautiful baubles, ornaments, glass flower magnets, glass sets, candle holders, vases, bowls, and glass bead jewelry to buy for your loved ones. Everything is handmade. There was also a glass blowing demonstration while we were there which was quite beautiful and impressive. The sale prices on the glass bowls and vases were extraordinary considering the time and work that goes into producing them. Definitely will keep this as one of my gift buying shopping stops! read more

I purchased a groupon for my husband for Christmas. I called on January 3rd with a couple questions before I booked the class. I never received a call back. I called again and the woman I spoke with was quite rude. The class that we wanted to sign up for was full and she blamed me for "waiting until the end of the groupon" before booking. Like I was supposed to know how long the sale had been going on! They said the class could be used in January or February, but they didn't have a single class in February and January was full. They did offer to let us come to a weekday class instead, however my husband works second shift so it wouldn't work out. I tried to contact groupon for a refund since they sold more coupons than they had seats for, but they wouldn't refund my money. I saw that they had another groupon for a different class (which was the same price I paid for the first one). I called again hoping that they could accommodate the groupon for that class and I was told that they wouldn't and I would have to pay full price. My husband and I were really looking forward to the class, but sadly I just wasted $120 instead. read more
