Glass House is in Free Union, about 20 minutes outside downtown Charlottesville. The location was perfect because it felt peaceful and tucked away in the country, while still being close enough to explore Charlottesville, Crozet, wineries, orchards and hiking. The hospitality was what really made the stay special. Kristin, the chef at the B&B, is incredibly warm and welcoming, and breakfast at 9 AM each morning was something we genuinely looked forward to. She personalized meals around our likes and dislikes and used fresh, local ingredients. During our stay we had blueberry ricotta pancakes, peach and Brie cinnamon bread pudding, latkes with breakfast meats, and an egg quiche with sausage and vegetables. There was also yogurt, fresh fruit, smoothies and coffee available throughout the day. The B&B has a very personal feel, with cookbooks throughout the house, unique Nicaraguan tropical decor and themed rooms such as the Chocolate Room, Wine Room and Under the Stars Suite. The bedding was comfortable, with both communal spaces and areas where you could have some privacy. The attention to detail was wonderful. We had a chocolate surprise, and a complimentary glass at the winery for being guests. I'm not much of a sweets person, but the chocolates were somehow exactly what I wanted all weekend, especially with a glass of wine. You can also purchase bottles and chocolates after hours, and they recently launched a wine club. I also really liked that the owner is actually around the property and winery. He was happy to answer questions, talk about the area and share the history of the vineyard, which made the experience feel much more personal. The winery is about a five-minute walk from the B&B and is open Wednesday through Sunday. The glass house itself is beautiful, almost like a greenhouse, with water elements, accent lighting through the greenhouse plants and vineyards located directly behind it. There are places to sit and watch the sunset with a glass of wine or enjoy coffee in the morning. The sunsets were incredible. On a clear night, the colors over the vineyards seemed to change every few minutes, and it was incredibly peaceful. We also saw wildlife around the property. The winery offers chocolate and wine pairings, reasonably priced wine, live music and food trucks. The live music was especially good and covered different genres throughout the weekend. We even had a seafood boil from one of the food trucks. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The brewery is another three-minute walk from the B&B and is currently open Saturdays. Having both a winery and brewery on the same property is something I didn't see anywhere else during our trip. We tried the pineapple sour and coconut stout, and they have a light beer coming soon. The brewery itself is also really unique because it was made using leftover wine bottles. There is plenty to do without leaving the property, including a saltwater pool, jacuzzi, live music, food trucks and plenty of places to relax. We also used Glass House as our home base for exploring the area. Carter Mountain Orchard was fun for apple cider donuts, cider and other treats. We visited Pippin Hill, Hark Vineyards, Eastwood Estate and Knights Gambit, each with a completely different atmosphere. We also hiked Humpback Rocks and Crabtree Falls. Humpback is definitely strenuous, while Crabtree was more manageable and had beautiful views. We spent some time in Crozet and downtown Charlottesville as well. We had a delicious meal at Smokehouse BBQ at Piedmont, and downtown Charlottesville's Downtown Mall was fun to explore. Vita Pizza was delicious and very accommodating with our food variations. One thing future guests should know is that most restaurants outside of Glass House are about 20-30 minutes away, so keep some snacks on hand and make dinner plans earlier. Most wineries also close around 5-6 PM, which actually worked well for us because we could enjoy the wineries during the day and get back to Glass House in time for the sunset. Our four-night mother-daughter trip was exactly what we wanted, and Glass House was the perfect home base. What made it even more memorable was the people we met and how genuinely welcomed we felt. There are plenty of beautiful wineries in the Charlottesville area, but Glass House felt different. You get wine, beer, live music, food, hiking, a pool, a jacuzzi, beautiful sunsets and a truly personal B&B experience all in one place. I genuinely think it would be a missed opportunity to visit the Charlottesville area and not experience Glass House. We will absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting. You get the peaceful small-town feel along with beautiful, friendly amenities, and we truly can't say enough good things about our experience.

The description and online reviews painted a picture of a quaint antique-filled farmhouse. This is true. I loved the antiques! The player piano and some furnishings reminded me of my childhood home. The innkeepers showed us around the first floor of the B & B and told us Keurig coffee was available anytime. We were told we could use the wine glasses on the buffet and there were bottles of water in the mini-frig near the dining room. They brought us to the Bridal Room, which was furnished in antiques. We asked for a restaurant recommendation and were not disappointed with their suggestion of Hank's Grill. When we returned later reality set in. There was no water in the mini-refrigerator. There was no closet, the armoire was too dirty and dusty to place our belongings, and the only hook fell off the bathroom door. The following evening we noticed our room had not been tidied, we had already made the bed but towels were not replaced, the shower gel dispenser which was almost empty hadn't been refilled, and the single tiny waste basket was not emptied. I am aware many hotels and inns eliminated daily cleaning since COVID, but it was not noted on the Cave Hill B&B website, nor did the innkeepers inform us. There should have at least been additional towels delivered outside our door, or four sets of towels in the room the first day and shampoo and shower gel filled. The first-morning juice glasses and a beautiful empty pitcher were on the breakfast table but there was no juice or water, therefore no beverages for non-coffee or tea drinkers. When we returned that night the walkway was so dark I needed a flashlight. We planned to have wine on the deck off the upstairs hallway. (The deck was a plus.) There was only one wine glass and it had a fingerprint. The following morning no glasses were on the breakfast table and there was still no water. We would have loved to learn more about the farm and cave but the only times we saw the innkeepers were at check-in and breakfast and that was only for a few minutes while she placed the breakfast on the table. We did not see the innkeepers, nor get a "Hope you enjoyed your stay" at check-out, the process is to leave the key in a basket. Cave Hill B & B is an interesting property with lots of potential but it needs a good cleaning and some Virginia hospitality.

I got a guided tour of the history and its history, Wow! I stayed in the gold room and I loved it! Big, so comfortable, clean, with original decorations. I felt like in a real living old-time home. As of why it is called the Gold Room - you will see the funny story on that in the room! Breakfast was so good: freshly made and generous, served with a smile. I would gladly come back!

Several of the amenities were not available, the property was run down and dirty. After we arrived at the Glade cabin we walked down the property to see what it had to offer. We noticed our cabin did not have a washer and dryer in it as described and didn'tfind the communal area laundry to use. There was no map provided and no signage to guide what areas were private and for public use. We came upon the wood burning sauna and I gasped when i opened the door. It was run down, super rustic and it honestly reminded me of a crematorium. Next to that was the cool dip pool which was not in working order and not listed as that on the rental description. Several reviews seem like the pool hasnt been in use for a few years. We then walked up to the "castle" on a narrow foot bridge and at the top were what seemed to be two drunk men who claimed they lived there. They were blocking the walkway, and to get around them was awkward. They asked us how we found this place and why we were there. Something didn't sit right with that encounter, so we continued walking instead of going inside to see the communal area. We went back to our cabin and never used the rest of the property after that. It did not seem eco friendly either. The property seems to be in a constant state of construction that other things get overlooked and unkempt. The glade cabin was just ok. It was secluded which was a plus. It seemed clean however there was a strong musty smell throughout. No cleaning supplies offered. The cabin had an ant problem inside and a bee problem outside of the entry doors. Both doors were hard to lock from inside. The main door leading to the kitchen had quite a large gap between it and the frame causing an easy way for insects to get in. The keypad was also not working properly and had a constant noise coming from it which was annoying while trying to sleep. The furniture was old and not comfortable. It did have good wifi and was able to stream on the TV. The lightning was very dim inside, and although it had a lot of lights it was still dark. Im not sure how this property keeps getting good reviews, but i did find quite a few similar to mine. On TripAdvisor there is also mention of this being a nudist camp which was not mentioned in any of the rental descriptions. That, and the non working pool and sauna alone would have made me not book in the first place. Again misleading and unsettling. It is close to the national park which is why we originally chose this place. We spent as much time away from it as possible and only returned to sleep. We did not once see any employees or property managers. I would caution anyone to rethink booking here.
