Weeks of searching online led us to Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast. Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast is a 1750s log home that sits on a 100-acre farm outside Harrisonburg, Virginia. The house retains its original rustic charm, with hand-hewn beams and bluestone chimneys. The owners have made tasteful renovations over time, too- digital thermostats, glass walk-in showers, and WiFi. There are wide-open views around the B&B. On any given morning, you might catch a glimpse of a cow, a deer, or the friendly farm cat, Maple. There are lovely rolling hills in the distance. It's quiet and peaceful. You'd never realize that a city of 51,000 people is only ten minutes away. It was everything we'd hoped to find. Since we only anticipated about 40 guests, we qualified for Silver Lake's intimate wedding package. That package allowed us to rent all six of the B&B's guest rooms for our wedding party and parents. We were able to hold our wedding ceremony and reception on-site. Weather permitting, the ceremony would be held outside in front of a beautiful arbor overlooking the hills. We'd have our reception under a large tent in the backyard. After confirming the cancellation policy a few dozen times, we booked before we ever set foot on the property. The owners stopped responding after we signed a contract. Weeks went by. We repeatedly left voicemails and sent e-mails, and no response. Finally, our wedding planner had enough and visited the venue. That's when we learned the owners we booked with had sold the B&B. The new owners were taking the reins and would contact us soon. Undoubtedly, this was an anxious time for us. In hindsight, it was the best thing that could've happened. The new owners, Ben and Hannah, contacted us a couple of weeks later. They apologized profusely for the confusion and promised us an extraordinary experience. They delivered on this promise in spades! Since taking over, they made many improvements to the property we enjoyed for our wedding day. We're grateful for their efforts and excited to see their continued progress! Ben recently refinished the front porch. It's a welcome and comfortable place to sit in a rocking chair on a chilly morning with a cup of hot coffee and a book. Their dining room features a giant, exquisite dining table that Hannah artfully decorates each season. It's a perfect place to enjoy a hot, filling breakfast and forge new friendships. Lastly, there are guest books in every room and the main dining room. We enjoyed reading about previous guests' stories and experiences. Hopefully, future guests will enjoy reading about ours! Ben and Hannah worked seamlessly with our wedding vendors to arrange on-site visits and discuss logistics. They communicated constantly and accommodated every reasonable request. We are so grateful that a twist of fate allowed us to meet them. They politely stayed inside for our wedding ceremony, but we insisted they join us for our reception under the tent in their backyard. They cooked and cared for us for days; the least we could do was offer them the same treatment. We are still determining when we'll return to Virginia, but we will undoubtedly stay at Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast when we do. We know we'll leave with full bellies and hearts. The description and online reviews painted a picture of a quaint antique-filled farmhouse. This is true. I loved the antiques! The player piano and some furnishings reminded me of my childhood home. The innkeepers showed us around the first floor of the B & B and told us Keurig coffee was available anytime. We were told we could use the wine glasses on the buffet and there were bottles of water in the mini-frig near the dining room. They brought us to the Bridal Room, which was furnished in antiques. We asked for a restaurant recommendation and were not disappointed with their suggestion of Hank's Grill. When we returned later reality set in. There was no water in the mini-refrigerator. There was no closet, the armoire was too dirty and dusty to place our belongings, and the only hook fell off the bathroom door. The following evening we noticed our room had not been tidied, we had already made the bed but towels were not replaced, the shower gel dispenser which was almost empty hadn't been refilled, and the single tiny waste basket was not emptied. I am aware many hotels and inns eliminated daily cleaning since COVID, but it was not noted on the Cave Hill B&B website, nor did the innkeepers inform us. There should have at least been additional towels delivered outside our door, or four sets of towels in the room the first day and shampoo and shower gel filled. The first-morning juice glasses and a beautiful empty pitcher were on the breakfast table but there was no juice or water, therefore no beverages for non-coffee or tea drinkers. When we returned that night the walkway was so dark I needed a flashlight. We planned to have wine on the deck off the upstairs hallway. (The deck was a plus.) There was only one wine glass and it had a fingerprint. The following morning no glasses were on the breakfast table and there was still no water. We would have loved to learn more about the farm and cave but the only times we saw the innkeepers were at check-in and breakfast and that was only for a few minutes while she placed the breakfast on the table. We did not see the innkeepers, nor get a "Hope you enjoyed your stay" at check-out, the process is to leave the key in a basket. Cave Hill B & B is an interesting property with lots of potential but it needs a good cleaning and some Virginia hospitality.

We searched the web for BnBs in the Shenandoah Valley, and came upon the Rosendale Inn. Seemed like a chill place, and we called and booked the space with a credit card number, but we were told we'd need to pay by check. It seemed a little fishy, and I was prepared for good or bad. We arrived on a dark fall evening, and Paul, the inn owner, met us downstairs and showed us to our rooms. The rooms are named after Virginian Presidents, my wife and I were in the Woodrow Wilson suite, and my parents had the Andrew Jackson suite. We settled into our rooms and then drank wine and played board games in the library, and slept very comfortably while the wind made the house creak a little. The inn is PACKED with history. It was owned by relatives of President Wilson, and a few presidents stayed there as well. Paul told us the whole history in the museum, and all the stages the building went through in its ongoing restoration. He is full of stories, from his own life on 3 continents and all the books he's written. In the morning, we had coffee around the table, and then Paul and his mom made us a nice breakfast, starting with fruit, and then an egg casserole and sausage one day, and french toast the next day. He made hot water for my parents (not coffee drinkers), and he gave us tips for what to do in the valley. Solid BnB, great for relaxing, and killer views of the valley. We hope to be back in a few summers!

It was wonderful to have a flexible and late check-in time as we hiked all day in Shenandoah Park. The cottage itself is PERFECT: very spacious and clean with everything you could need for several days. Mary & Dan have thought of & provided everything to make you feel at home and comfortable, i.e. wine opener and cutting board. It was nice to maintain your privacy because you had everything you needed inside your own cottage! Inside the mini fridge you will find waters, mini orange juices, little bags of trail mix, cheeses, and even mini bottles of white & red wine and more!!! I have stayed at many B&Bs and never experienced this level of included goodies- it was such a wonderful surprise! The location of the B&B is beautiful as well. Very convenient to Luray and the park. You can enjoy the lovely backyard on your private adirondack chairs or on the patio which has several rocking chairs and a fire pit. At 9:00am Mary & Dan knocked on our cottage door with breakfast and we were 'Wow'-ed again! The smoothies made with fresh-picked Sperryville, VA blueberries were my favorite. They accommodated my vegetarian needs perfectly. My fiance and I agreed that the breakfast was one of the best, if not THE best, we've had at a B&B, and we have stayed at some very expensive B&Bs. I emailed her quite a few times before booking- she answered all of my questions and even gave me extra info based upon what I had asked. I told her the reason why we were coming and if I could do the wine basket add-on as a nice touch for when we arrived. Also to note, I had never been to this area before or rented a cottage like this, so I had no idea what to expect! When we arrived, the cottage was even better than the pictures (if that's possible). The cottage is quite large and definitely beats staying in a small, one room bed and breakfast or hotel. The cottage was beautifully decorated and VERY clean. So cozy with the fireplace, bed was extra comfy, everything really was just perfect! Knowing it was my boyfriend's birthday, Mary made a mini cheesecake and left it in the room for us! How thoughtful! Even left a nice birthday card and a couple extra muffins. FYI: her baking skills are top notch! Our continental breakfast consisted of toast, English muffins, fruit, baked goods, juice, plenty of coffee/tea/hot chocolate which is all in the room upon arrival. I can't say enough positive things about this cottage. Mary and her husband also own the local pub, Dubliners, and we ate there the first night. Food (and wine) was great! Overall a perfect birthday escape. Could not have asked for anything more! Many, many thanks to Mary and her husband. We will definitely be returning!
