I did run an experiment where I ordered an online pair in tandem with a pair from G&H and the lenses were visibly better on the G&H pair. Worth considering when thinking about value. I was there today with my teenage daughter to get her eyeglass prescription filled and the Older Gentleman (who I presume was the owner) said something to the effect of "you should be wearing contacts/you're practically blind" ‼ Obviously this made both me and my Daughter uncomfortable immediately. Not a good way to start with your Customers. It's as if I strolled into Brooks Brothers hoping to get a suit but instead the salesman said " you're fat" and "we don't carry what you really need"‼ After settling on a Pair but then asking about the price for the Lenses and Frames - which came to over $400 - I guess I annoyed him as he disparagingly commented on my daughter's current glasses with "well that's what you get when you order online"‼ Well excuse me but her pair lasted 2 years and they were purchased from PD Optics, Livingston NJ - and they are 100x better than this place‼ If they dealt with Teenage patients we would still be there. A quick stop-in during lunch a couple years ago with friends who were already customers ended up with me leaving with two great pairs, which then lead me to bring one of my friends in. I've broken them more than a couple of times and they were extraordinarily accommodating each time I went in to have them fixed. Their glasses are fine and I did receive devoted attention through the process of selecting them. However, I found both men on staff there to have a rather smug, self-righteous tone. One made it a point to really trash talk local Montclair competition. It's like this "don't you know who we are" kind of attitude about them. Then, over a year later when I went to see if could get a scratch repaired, they were rather abrupt in telling me glasses were no longer under warranty. I have zero problem with the policy. It's actually fair. Again, though, there is an unwarranted elitism about this place. I just come away with this almost dismissive tone from them. I happened to share my perspective with my much more upscale wife who has over 10 pair of expensive glasses from varied stores. She confirmed her own experience of the vibe here, adding that is why she never ended up purchasing from them. This store and its glasses are nice enough, but I went to "superior" places when living in Manhattan with even better products, and much more down to earth customer service who didn't seem so judgmental. read more

I have been going to Greek and Howard for over 10 years. However pre pandemic I went in to have my glasses tightened which they had done previously. Unfortunately this time the frame cracked! As a temporary measure they cemented it. They promised to make good on what happened. Fast forward, I bought new glasses from a shop in New York where I purchased the broken ones. Certainly not an inexpensive shop. However, Bill and team have always been able to quickly guide me through a sea of quality frames right down to one or two that would work for me. I recently bought frames made by Paul Smith. I loved the style, but the standard lenses were not tall anough for me, given that I would need to use the glasses for both distance and reading. So Bill was able to add a few milimeters to the height of the lenses which enables me to use them for reading, but in no way diminishes the sleek design. Having custom clip on sunglasses made was a breeze as well, and they fit perfectly over the custom lenses. Lastly, I had to go back to have the width of the frames adjusted because although they felt comfortable in the shop when I tried them on, extended use was uncomfortable. Adjustments were made quickly and effortlessly. read more

After 25 years of perfect eyesight starting to fade, I thought it was time to stop squinting. I visited Gleek & Howard as my first ever glasses buying experience, and I'm really glad I did! You are greeted right when you walk in the door, even if they are busy with other customers. Justin was an HUGE help seeing that I'd never had to pick out glasses before and as he put it, helped me find my 'optical identity'. He made sure he got a feel for my aesthetic and style before just throwing picks at me. As I looked through their selection, along with my family, he would pop over now & then and helped choose great options without being over bearing. He gave his real opinion, so I appreciated the honesty, it made me trust him that I was getting a pair that was actually a good fit! He ended up picking the winner. When I picked them up a week later, Justin was in the back and there was two other guys behind the counter. I wasn't totally fitted with the new glasses, they kind of were just chatting amongst themselves. I sort of felt that they should have made sure they were perfect before sending me out the door because they ended up sliding down my face the entire rest of the day. It wasn't totally as enchanting as my first visit. I returned the following day and was helped by Laura who was fantastic! She made sure every little detail was perfect, gave me tips on how to clean them, provided cleaning materials that I wasn't given during my first pick up. She made sure I left with them fitting perfectly so she saved the day. My Moscot glasses were 445, if this place is out of your price range, that isn't a reason for a bad review, I'm guessing they will hold up much longer than Warby Parker glasses. This place was recommended, so I took a drive. Quaint and nice, seems inviting, and was until I proclaimed that I had a budget that kept me in the lower end of what they carried. He walked away from me a few times to service others who were walking in, despite the fact that I wanted his opinion on finding the correct frame and was ready to commit. While this shop is pricey its service is top notch. My husband got a great pair of stylish Ray bans here for about $390 and they held onto them while we went to the eye doctor (I got contacts) then I dropped the script off for him and the gentleman wrote down my information and called me (his wife) when they were ready to be picked up all in all about 5 days. We didn't have to put down a deposit and the service really was great. The selection is small but quite stylish and on the ball. The only real downside is because they are right around the corner from church street parking can be an issue though there is always the crescent deck if it comes down to it. I also like that it is close to the library and I can combine the trip. Thanks guys, we'll be back in the future. read more

I don't know how they manage to stay in business or keep the lights on, because while they like to think of themselves as a "Manhattan eyewear shop", their overpriced, dated and unimpressive selection has not changed since 2008. I was hoping that they might have stepped things up a bit in the past few years. They are completely off putting, rude and generally disinterested in customers who walk into their shop. I took my money to Manhattan and bought three frames and prescription lenses. So much for supporting the local businesses. When I inquired if they accepted any insurance, they snapped that they did not take insurance...period. There was no attempt to explain the possibility of an itemized receipt that I could in turn submit to my carrier. I was fully prepared to pay cash, as I ended up doing the next day in Soho. I have to admit that I was a little reluctant to drive to Montclair from Parsippany (there are plenty of other eyewear retailers near me), but with my recent horrific experience with a Pearle Vision and my attachment to my Lindberg eyeglasses (one of the lenses broke and only a authorized Lindberg dealer can replace them), I decided to try Gleek and Howard. AND THAT WAS THE BEST DECISION I MADE!!!!!! They listened to my trauma, they helped me with my favorite Lindberg glasses, they provided me with a level of customer service that practically doesn't exist anymore! They are the most awesome eyewear retailers in the world. They are professional, they have reasonable prices and they have a certain level of laid back feel (which is comfortable - you can relate to these amazing guys) and knowledge that surpasses most retailers. This isn't one of those high pressure sales places, which I like because eyeglasses are expensive and never should be a rash or rushed decision. They provided me with an embossed receipt so that I can submit to my insurance company for reimbursement and answered every question I had regarding my glasses. I have no idea why the first reviewer gave such a negative review (he must be a cousin of a competitor...). When it came time to adjust the fit of my eyeglasses, they took the time to fix and adjust everything for me. And sometimes I feel bad asking over and over again for adjustments, because I don't want to be those overbearing and unreasonable people, but for a pair of glasses, I wear everyday, I thought it was worth me asking the experts for the tweaks. They took the time to address every concern, not matter how small and made sure my fit was perfect. They never made me feel like I was imposing or asking too much. They were actually happy to help - you can't ask for better service! I'm so glad I came to Gleek and Howard. One of those rare, very positive experiences. Thank you guys. First off, an important disclaimer. I am one of those very demanding customers who knows all about what they are buying way before they actually do buy it, bluing the lines between an educated consumer and an anal know-it-all. I am happy I made my way to this shoppe. Though it did look plentiful, I cannot speak much of the selection, as I went there to look at a very specific premium brand. I was thoroughly impressed though by the incredible service. Two separate people at separate times (yes, I did spend quite a bit of time in there taking up space and annoying people with my energetic 20 month old baby) spent time showing me different models, accurately guiding me through different style choices (as per my fashion-conscious wife) and constantly adjusting each frame for optimal fit. All that while the store was practically packed with shoppers and clients who were picking up in an impressively continuous cycle. Even though they do not process vision insurance, nor have an in-house eye exam option, I will definitely be circling around again at some point or other. This is not a discount store but it exudes confidence and trust in a way that one desires from their jeweler, watchmaker, tailor, etc, meaning that you can expect the right answer to your eyewear-related questions, something that IMO matters when you are considering spending a small fortune on a pair of glasses. Bill, the owner, has decades of experience in optometry and was able to order the lowest profile lenses from Japan for my challenging prescription. He also realized that my existing lenses were never centered properly (which I bought from another eyeware store in Montclair) and adjusted the new lenses for superior vision.
