More than one visitor, this one included, has concluded that spending time at Welbourne is like visiting Grandma's house, for there's no better quick description of it. But the fact of the matter is, there is so much more. Welbourne is a living, breathing timepiece of current, past, and aged history that has been ticking through the ages of American life, since before America became a "united" States. Within its walls lie relics of Piedmont, Virginia, and U.S. history that you're not only allowed to touch, but are encouraged to take into your hands and feel, play with, and enjoy, just as if they were items in Grandma's house. From the second you cross the front porch and walk over the front door transom, history descends on you in waves like the folds of an old, warm blanket. If you ensconce yourself in the wonderful library to the right of the large foyer, you can relax in a rocker next to a nightstand on which sits a narrow treatise from 1765 entitled Considerations on the Propriety of Imposing Taxes in the British Colonies for the Purpose of Raising Revenue, by Act of Parliament; which you can take into your own hands and read under the steady painted gaze of Richard A. Dulaney in all his Confederate Colonel glory; while hundreds of volumes of history in floor to ceiling bookshelves beckon you to investigate the Civil War, as well as any number of fiction works old and "new" (circa early 20thcentury or earlier). Those sounds underfoot as you step from room to room aren't creaks, they're the songs of the past asking you to join in the chorus of centuries of life here. The faces in those paintings and pictures wait patiently for you to settle into your comfy chair to listen to their myriad stories of eras past, buttressed by the thousands of books in the untold number of bookcases all over the house. The well-worn rugs atop those well-worn original floorboards muffle the cries & laughter of times past as the ever-present tick-tock of the 1840 Howard & Davis banjo clock on the stairwell wall keeps perfect time to the music of those lives like a metronome of history. Beneath your feet well-worn Persian rugs laying atop original black board floors sing songs of centuries of life that have danced were you now so comfortably sit. A seat where the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe came to pen some of their works while their legendary publisher Maxwell Perkins enjoyed his close friendship with Elizabeth Lemmon, lady of the house. In fact, all over the 3 floors of this manse sit numerous bookcases filled with thousands of books large & small on every topic imaginable, all watched over by photos, paintings, and drawings of family members past; each unique room & bedroom holds a special piece of that past, presented in the now familiar term of faded elegance and comfort befitting Grandma's house. Noah Webster and all his intellectual heft leaves me wanting in the superlatives necessary to describe, much less explain, Welbourne and its impact on you. Because it's more than just Grandma's house. It's a thousand Grandma's houses, of thousands of Virginians, of thousands of Americans; storied lives were lived and breathed within its walls and out in its countryside; their ghosts speak to you out of the expansive silence; every photo and painting and picture a reflection of someone you should know; the life of someone who very well may have supped with George Washington at Mt. Vernon, ridden with John Mosby and his Rangers, or perhaps accompanied J.E.B. Stuart across the Potomac River at Seneca on his way to a collision with Union forces at Gettysburg. Welbourne is one of those few extant places that stands in silent testimony of a disappearing Virginia hunt countryside with so many stories to tell they would have kept Ken Burns & Shelby Foote quite busy. So how can I describe this place in such a way as to get you to come? I can't. If you're looking for opulence and gentrified regalia accompanied by $500 glasses of aged, vintage Virginia wine, you've come to the wrong place; turn around and go back to Middleburg and drive north 5 minutes to the Salamander Resort and all its antiseptic perfection. But if you want to touch living, breathing history as lived by 7 generations of the same family, the descendants of which welcome you like old friends with a heart-felt make yourself at home warmth as if they were your cousins; if squeaking floors and cracks in walls aren't noise and eyesores but instead the house's attempt to open itself up to you to sit, reflect, and bask in respite from the modern in the lap of true old-world family comfort & charm, come here. The grounds appeared unkempt and there is a broken window on the front of the house. Also, no Christmas decorations at all which was a big disappointment. I went into dinner at The Inn at Little Washington with very high expectations. I've been fortunate…read moreenough to dine at multiple Michelin two and three-star restaurants around the country, so I'm familiar with what that level of dining can deliver--and, more importantly, what I believe the experience should feel like. There were certainly some excellent moments. The egg course was fantastic, the caviar addition to the lobster was a great touch, and the lamb was one of the strongest courses of the evening. The cheese service was also outstanding and probably one of the highlights of the entire meal. The service, setting and attention to detail are all what you would expect from an establishment with this much history and reputation. Unfortunately, the meal was ultimately undermined by the wine pairing. The reserve wine pairing was disappointing. We paid $750 per person for the wine pairing, which consisted of just four very small pours. At that price, I expected an extraordinary lineup of wines--rare, compelling bottles that elevated the food and made the pairing an integral part of the experience. Instead, the wines struck me as fairly mediocre, and the tiny pours made the value particularly difficult to understand. The pours were about 1.5 - 2 ounce pours of wines that are readily available online and some even available at discount wine sites. The first wine was sweet and a $65 retail wine, second was a mid-level Sauvignon blanc, followed by a mid-level Chardonnay. The pours were about 1.5-2 ounces so you barely received a taste of the wine. The last wine was very good but the pour was even smaller. For 1,500, my wife and I could have had a top tier bottle of wine. They should feel embarrassed about this offering. The wine pairing pours equalled about 1/2 - 3/4 bottle of wine for the two of us. Having experienced multiple Michelin star restaurants, this is where The Inn at Little Washington fell short for me. At the very highest level of dining, I'm not simply looking for good food. I'm looking for an experience that feels exceptional from beginning to end. The ingredients, creativity, portions, wine program, pacing and overall sense of occasion should all come together in a way that makes the moment feel magical. There were many times during the meal where we had no wine and no food. This has never happened at any of my experiences at other Michelin restaurants. There are plenty of diners who absolutely love the Inn, and I can understand why. There are also reviews from other guests who have praised the food, service and overall experience while others have questioned the value and portion sizes. That divide is understandable. The restaurant clearly has its devoted following, but my experience left me on the more critical side. To be clear, this isn't a bad restaurant. Far from it. The egg, caviar-enhanced lobster, lamb and cheese service were all excellent, and the Inn remains an impressive destination with exceptional service and a beautiful setting. But when you've dined at multiple Michelin star restaurants, you develop a pretty good sense of what separates a very good restaurant from an extraordinary one. For me, The Inn at Little Washington didn't deliver the level of food, wine or value that I've experienced at other three-star establishments. Three stars from me. The food has moments of brilliance, but at the reserve wine pairing was simply too difficult to overlook. And considering the restaurant's recent fall from three Michelin stars to two, I think the downgrade is understandable.

AFTERNOON TEA ONLY review. Recently, the famous Inn at Little Washington began offering afternoon…read moretea, previously only a perk for guests at the Inn, as a standalone service. I brought my mother for tea as a special birthday treat. A few days before our reservation, staff from the Inn reached out to confirm the reservation and ask if we were celebrating any occasion and I told them about my mother's birthday. We arrived at the Inn a little before 2pm and were told they couldn't seat us until right at 2pm for tea. However, at 2pm, when we were lead to the conservatory for tea, there were already people seated. I'm fine with rules like this, but then they need to be the same for all parties. They started us off with a version of an Aperol that was refreshing and the selection of teas was very nice. The food was brought out on a small serving tower with three savory and three sweet items for each of us. We loved the lemon tarts and lobster rolls, but the scones were undercooked and doughy inside. While this was less food than we expected (especially for the $114 per person price point), they did ask if we'd like another of any of our favorite items and then brought us out more of those. This was a thoughtful way of keeping the number of items low, but giving guests more of what they loved. We stayed for about an hour and they began clearing plates and teapots, etc. At no point did anyone acknowledge my mother's birthday or tell us that service had concluded. We walked out of the dining room and while my mother was getting the car from the valet I asked about her birthday recognition with the team. They apologized profusely and offered us complimentary breakfast the next day. As we had driven 2 hours for tea, that was not in the cards. Instead, they refunded the ENTIRE MEAL. I certainly did not ask that they do that, but it was a considerable gesture on their part. I love the Inn at Little Washington and have had amazing meals there, but I would not recommend it for Afternoon Tea. The staff just doesn't seem to have a grip on how to do it for guests who aren't staying overnight at the Inn. Maybe they'll figure it out in a couple months, but I'll take my teas elsewhere.

The bed was comfortable, but as others have said you do hear everything outside on the street, so it might be best to try and book a room in a somewhat remote corner.

The natural light in our room was incredible and so were the street lights! We wore sleep masks and that helped us greatly but without them we likely wouldn't have slept well at all. Also, when we raised issues about cleanliness, the manager responded promptly. I'm not sure we'd stay here again but it was still a solid stay.

Clean enough for park lodges, firm beds and decent quality bedding. This time we stayed in a premium room with two doubles in the pinnacle building right next to the office and the restaurant so very convenient for breakfast. It's west facing so you get the sunset. Room's a good size with a closet/luggage area outside the bathroom, wood flooring, fridge, a small table with two chairs, and there are also two patio chairs outside the door (upper floor has better view on the balcony - ground floor has a grassy lawn area in front). Aircon doesn't seem to be working but room feels pretty cool with the ceiling fan on. WiFi is pretty much nonexistent - it only seems to work in the office where there is a seating area or maybe the dining room. This time also tried the closest trail - Stony Man - a short walk from the lodge. Not sure why it took us so many visit to hike on this trail - it's a short walk (just an easy 1.6 mile circuit) to the summit with fantastic view of the valley and enough space on the rock outcropping to sit on to enjoy the view.

He makes you breakfast each morning and makes you feel very welcome and at home. It's a bit old school because we called to make a reservation and Bob just takes your name and number and that's it. No credit card number, no confirmation email... just show up, he's waiting for you! The house itself has so much character, built in the 1830's, we loved looking at all the unique rooms and old- timey decor. Definitely recommend and would visit again! Also would like to add that one of the common complaints that I read on yelp when we were looking for places to stay was that the noise from the highway was too much. Maybe it was our room's location in the house but I'll honestly say that it was barely noticeable and definitely not something that's even worth mentioning.

It was great making acquaintances over those few days; getting to see them in the mornings and compare notes about what we'd seen/done the day before. The location was great, we had no problem exploring local wineries and small towns in the area. At the suggestion of the owners, we visited a local civil war museum and battlefield which were truly fascinating. We even made it to Monticello! All in all it was a perfect stay, we would love to go back!!
