    Marriott ranch: jeep tour stop
    Bella J.

Amazing! If you want a quiet time away from the city, work or too much bustling, this is the place to be. No city or concrete in sight despite being reasonably close to the city. Food is decent, grilled meat and corns. Lots of fun activities, such as horse riding, jeep tours and clay shooting. They also have a professional dealer so you can play poker. Air is nice and fresh. Great place to go to relax.

Great time today at the ranch. I communicated via email with Jean to address a few questions. I suggest email communication in place of phone calls, the staff spend the majority of their time outside with the horses and customers so calls frequently go unanswered. Our group booked the 60 minute ride. Upon entry we were asked to keep masks on and wash our hands for 20 seconds, then choose helmets on the deck, I suggest bringing a scarf to wear as a barrier between the well loved helmet and your hair. Brief instructions were provided then we were assigned horses. The trail was enjoyable with a few small creek crossings. Everything was perfect, the staff were knowledgeable, friendly and following COVID protocol (social distancing and once on the horse masks can be removed). The horses are beautiful and well cared for. We plan to return in the fall.

Talk about a great experience! I can only attest to the horseback riding and cowboy dinner and not to staying at the hotel itself, but the trip out to Hume is well worth it. It's a slow, but beautiful 90-minute ride through some breathtaking landscape of the area. We got to see the longhorn steer they keep on grounds for special events and tourist pictures, rolling hills and gorgeous trees and plains. We were fortunate that the weather and temperature were picture-perfect. The wranglers were very nice. We arrived into the Old Western Town, which is so cute and kitsch. They have two men playing the banjo. The Marriott sends out its catering staff to create a phenomenal buffet of thick, juicy, well-marinated tender steaks, barbecue chicken, corn pudding (to die for), salad, homemade dinner rolls and cornbread rolls (sweet and moist), baked beans. I had to try everything (you know, to make sure I gave a fair review) and the only thing that as disappointing was the chicken: it was a little dry and the sauce had no flavor. No biggie because the steak was out of this world. I had to try hard to save room for dessert: homemade apple and cherry pies and real whip cream. My poor horse must have groaned under my added weight for the trip back. It is definitely an experience that anyone who likes horseback riding and great food should try.

I went horseback riding on a trail ride, and absolutely LOVED it!!! The owner, Jean, makes it a perfect experience for riders and horses alike. She owns all the horses and equipment, and keeps everything in top shape. She is super well-organized, from pairing riders and horses to adhering conscientiously to COVID-19 precautions. If you are a novice or beginner, you are in expert hands. I hadn't been on a horse in 34 years, but can't wait to return after falling in love all over again with riding!

I hear the ranch is doing some LivingSocial deals now, but they really need to get themselves out there and market more to the D.C.-metro area. We stumbled across the Marriott Ranch via Google search when looking at nearby places for a weekend getaway out of the city that wouldn't be a complete drain because of the long drive. Believe it or not, this beautiful, serene getaway is less than an hour drive from Fairfax (take the Marshall exit from I-66). The ranch is just a fun, relaxing experience from the beginning. When you turn in the main driveway leading up to the manor house, you'll likely have to stop the car for a couple of minutes and wait for a cow to get out of the road. We were lucky enough to see a couple of calves up close for feeding time. The checkin process was quick. A nice older lady gave me the key as she showed me around the manor house and the surrounding grounds. We stayed in the Fairfield Suite, which was very nice and allows you all of the bed-and-breakfast amenities of the manor house without living in a room off a hallway with a bunch of other tenants (a few of the suites, including Fairfield, are in the carriage houses out back, only a few steps from the manor house front door). Need a snack or somewhere to relax with a good book? The kitchen has a full stock of popcorn, granola bars, cereal, chips, etc., along with water, wine, beer, champagne and such that you are allowed relatively unlimited access to at any time during your stay (I say relatively because I imagine at some point they might try to herd you out of the kitchen, but I never actually saw this happen, even on my third or fourth trip for pretzels). The innkeeper hosts a wine and cheese reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the the piano room each evening -- I have no idea where they got the goat cheese I had, but it was absolutely earthshattering in its deliciousness. Each morning, beginning at 8 a.m., you get a three-course breakfast. This was perhaps the part of the stay I was originally the most excited about, but it's also the reason for my review being four stars instead of five. The first course -- pastries... to die for. They make some of the best pastries I've ever had. I am especially a big fan of the zucchini muffins and the blueberry scones. The second course: fruit. A good variety, and different, both mornings. I liked the second morning best because of the perfectly ripe blackberries and delectably tart pineapple. But the third course is where the breakfast sort of struggles. We had pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs one morning. There's no option to get an egg fried or poached, for example, they just bring out the meal of the day to you. The bacon was good, but I really prefer turkey bacon myself. The pancakes were the best thing we had in the third course both days, but I would've expected -- with all the other high-end stuff coming out of this kitchen -- something other than plain old white flour pancakes. Buckwheat or something, perhaps? Blueberries in them? I dunno. Seemed like a cop-out. The second morning's third course also fell flat -- grits, sausage patty, sausage link and -- yet again -- scrambled eggs. I typically love grits, but these had cheese mixed in... so much so that it was very overpowering and overwhelmingly heavy. The sausage patty was dry, and the link had a weird flavoring to it. The eggs -- well again, yay, you can make scrambled eggs! Congrats? So what do you do at the ranch when you're not enjoying filling up your tummy? How about a spot of tea in J.W. Marriott's library? Checking out the various historical memorabilia from the Marshall family? (Yes, as in John and James Marshall.) Enjoying the countryside vistas and wildlife? Well, there's also satellite TV, comfortable beds and a smokehouse where you can enjoy a cigar, play a game of poker or warm up by the fire. The ranch is surrounded by wineries and boasts its own horse stables about two miles from the manor house. We also went on a two-hour trail ride, and the staff there was very friendly, professional and helpful -- which was good for me, as a beginner horse rider. Overall, the ranch is a moderately priced, quiet getaway from the traffic and noise of the D.C. area. It's a great place to enjoy a book, take in the farm life and get served a good meal by friendly folks. Heck, if they had WiFi I would've stayed another day and teleworked from the beauty of Hume, Va. I highly recommend Marriott Ranch... and here's your pro tip: Be on the lookout for dishes of Andes chocolates stashed around the manor house.

As someone who's parents has worked for Marriott for a very long time, I had positive thoughts about this place before visiting. Taking a 1.5 hour LivingSocial horseback riding trail ride was boring and uncomfortable. I've done many horseback riding trips/trailrides in MD, Mexico, Jamaica, and Australia and as a horseback rider, I have to say that by far this was the worst horseback "excursion" you could take. The staff were not very nice at all and the trail I was bored out of my mind. I understand they have many beginner riders here all the time and are being cautious and stern with everyone, but they went alittle above and beyond that with being snotty and rude. I don't think I'd ever be back based on this experience and cost (it is much more costly than other places I've checked out).

We swooped in for a last minute getaway for our 25th anniversary--never having known about this area of Virginia--and came away totally stunned with The Shenandoah Valley and its surroundings. We used AI to find this place, and to our delight, Glen Gordon Manor is a treasure that will forever live in our memories. The manor has been under current ownership for about twenty years, and the chef/owner Dayn Smith lives onsite upstairs in the manor, along with this wife Nancy, who did the decorating for the manor. Maddie was a total sweetheart to us upon arrival (and any place we're greeted with a glass of bubbly earns a special place at the top of our list). We stayed 3 nights at Glen Gordon Manor (Sunday - Wednesday) in the Mews Cottage in the Fyvie room (there are a handful of rooms in this cottage). Fyvie was well-appointed and immediately comfortable. The small porch was a spot where we whiled away many hours (both morning and evening). The coffee delivery from the manor each morning was always so nice! If you've read ANY of the reviews here, you'll know that each room is outfitted with a multi-speaker SONOS system which was so clutch! Breakfasts served inside the manor were so delicious, and so filling! Each morning was something a little different--but the formula the same--usually beginning with a bread or scone, followed by honey-sweetened Greek yogurt with granola, and then the main which always featured a farm-fresh egg presumably from the chickens we gazed upon during breakfast. We couldn't sit still long enough to enjoy the beautiful pool during our visit, even though the weather was perfect for it. We spent quite a bit of our time visiting downtown Front Royal and even more time on Skyline Drive doing some hiking! For one of our hikes, we took advantage of the manor's offering of a packaged picnic lunch, and simply loved it. We enjoyed a five-course meal at the very sophisticated Houndstooth Restaurant in the manor, and were totally awestruck. We spent a lot of time trying to decide which dish was our favorite, arriving at a decision of "inconclusive" because they were all flawless. At the end of our incredible dining experience, the chef himself came into the dining room and spent a few moments at each table--what a treat! I overheard another guest comment that the manor has Pappy Van Winkle, why should I be surprised at that?! Wow! The only recommendation we could make (which has nothing at all to do with the Manor) is, try to plan your visit here on a Wednesay-Sunday ... we found that many of the vineyards were not open Mondays or Tuesdays ... and let's face it, this part of the region is wine country so the vineyards are a must! We visited Rappahannock vineyard, which was right up the street. Not disappointed at all!

We arrived and the valet so kindly opened my door and guided us inside for our reservation. The inn was festively decorated and exuberanted a warmth that was just so welcoming. The staff at the desk was mere incredibly kind. We were taken to our seats and Alejandro our waiter was fabulous the whole night. In fact I can't say enough great things about their staff overall. Catalina definitely made our evening enjoyable while introducing our food and taking our plates. Again everyone did such a fabulous job taking care of us. The FOOD was AMAZING! We ordered the traditional 5 course and each dish was just another challenge to the palate. The balance of flavors and tones. The creative plating. The play on traditional flavors with modern twist. I didn't want the surprise of each dish to stop. We were lucky and during our meal had Chef Patrick O'Connell check on us. We finished the night with a special tour of the kitchen. The highlight-- learning that they have a water sommelier! We didn't order anything but hearing him speak of the different kinds of water We will definitely be back to celebrate large and special milestones. Absolutely worth trying once in a lifetime.

Others see it as part of a wider "reset" affecting other longtime three-star spots like Alinea (Chicago) and Masa (New York), which also dropped to two stars at the same time. I'm not completely sure why the slight decline but here's my honest view. The scenic drive from DC through the Virginia countryside sounds breathtaking--rolling hills, charming small towns, glimpses of Blue Ridge Mountains but in actuality all of the turns and hills made myself and friend sick. We had to pull over and gather ourselves. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, filled with artwork, pink, green and gold monkey wallpaper and Victorian tables, and English country style. It's maximalist--opulent without being stuffy. Our waitstaff made the evening extra special for my birthday. They constantly wished me a happy birthday, asked thoughtful questions about my life, shared jokes, and engaged in small talk that felt genuine and personal. Not to mention the menu with my name. Each course on the 7-course tasting menu was beautifully presented. We loved having three menu options to choose from: a new seasonal tasting (always fresh and surprising), Enduring Classics (with signature dishes like the iconic lobster preparations or herb-crusted favorites), and a full vegetarian Good Earth menu with the eggplant course being our favorite. The unlimited warm bread service with fresh butter and flaky sea salt was a simple but perfect touch. The Champagne options were endless (their wine list is legendary, with a massive cellar and expert sommeliers), and they even offered a dedicated book/menu highlighting rare waters from around the world--everything from iceberg sources to unique mineral springs. I've never seen a water book before. Standouts for me was the caviar egg, lamb main course and tomato amuse-bouche. If you're looking for a special occasion spot (birthday, anniversary, or just because), this is it. Four people will run you around $2500 including drinks. Con- I would work on the cocktail menu (the Diana tasted like cough medicine). Bring back the pear dessert and portion sizes from 12 years ago. My main lamb portion was embarrassing. Reviewers see pictures for example sizes. Please offer a dedicated pescatarian menu. Overall, Chef Patrick O'Connell and his team did a great job.
