Also it's so close to the Glen area, so if you have some extra time before the train arrives you can easily walk over there and grab other food options.

There is also bike parking at the station. As we know, the Ravinia business district is a charming collection of small family owned businesses in the uber charming Ravinia neighborhood in Highland Park. This station is used by 10s of 1000s of music lovers and concert goers every summer, but also by hundreds of local residents to commute to the city. I'll update my review again upon the completion of the stations renovation in summer 2016.

I noticed that the waiting area is open 5 AM to 8 PM which is somewhat later than other stations in the NW suburbs. There is a good deal of automobile parking available but it is broken up into smallish lots around the station. The parking payment kiosks are sheltered either in the main station or one of the satellite shelters. I was only able to spot one bicycle parking rack and it probably holds 10-15 bicycles. It is a bring your own lock or security device type of rack; coverings are not available. Unusual for Metra stations in the 'burbs- the BG Station has both a Coffee/Snack shop open mornings and a vending machine with drinks and snacks in the station waiting area that is available for use during station hours. Prices for both the vending machine and snack shop seemed reasonable to me (example being a Hershey's chocolate almond bar in the vending machine for 75 cents which I feel is less than you would pay at a convience store or gas station). There is one fully enclosed and three semi-enclosed satellite shelters that are separate from the main station. Platform 1 is fully handicap accessible, handicap access to platform 2 is possible but may require more time and care. Pace suburban bus service for routes 234, 272, 581, 582 and 626 stop at the nearby bus shelter.

I've taken the Yellowline mainly to get to the loop or Lincolnpark or to see the Cubs and wow, it's sooo easy. The booth always has a CTA employee in it, which adds to the safety. The Yellowline trains are also generally more on the clean side, which is a plus. Oh, there's a bunch of bike stands if you'd like to ride over and lock your bike. Which leads to the one point deduction. For some reason, there are a bunch of plastic and glass bottles that are laying around, beyond the tracks. This isn't Howard station and the CTA has to make a conscious effort to clean up this mess, because the litterbugs won't be going away, unfortunately - even with waste baskets just a few steps away. There isn't any parking here so be careful not to drop off at Crafty Beaver, you may end up getting a ticket like my neighbor. If need to park, you should park at Dempster Yellowline. All in all, consistent, clean, safe and just one stop away from Howard.

Occasionally I work in the area, and in the past I noted Oakton-Skokie as being the closest public transportation access spot to my job which is why I utilized it. I have to say that I love how well-maintained and easily accessible the stops are in Skokie in comparison to Chicago and Evanston. With that being said, some of the pros & cons I noted of Oakton-Skokie are. Pros: -It connects college students to Oakton Community College, which is only half of a mile away. -Easy accessible grocery stores (Market Place on Oakton & ALDI) that are coincidentally next to each other. -Diverse selection of restaurants within Downtown Skokie. Some noted are Libertad, Village Inn Pizzeria Sports Bar and Grill, Sugo Italian Street Food and De-Jred Fine Jamaican Cuisine. -It connects residents and those living outside of Skokie to events, and businesses in downtown Skokie, such as Skokie Theater; The Historical Society/Heritage Museum; the Public Library; St Peter's Catholic Church and Village Hall. -Wheel chair accessible ramp. -The yellow line - Skokie Swift, operates for weekday and weekend Chicago Cubs night games and Wrigley Field concerts going in-bound to until 12:00 AM on game nights. Cons: -The yellow line - Skokie Swift, does not run all night. Other than for Chicago Cubs night games and Wrigley Field concerts, it runs from Dempster to Howard until 11:15 PM, all week. The interior is not a bad size so that's nice for when it's cold outside (or super hot, I suppose). There's also a bathroom so that's a great plus. They have anti-homeless seating in here--the benches have little metal dividers along them so that you can't lie down on the benches. I didn't know that Des Plaines was a hotbed for homelessness, but also am disgusted by any operation that uses anti-homeless architecture. I don't know if it's Metra or Des Plaines that's responsible for it but just not a good look.

You almost always get a seat, and the cars are properly heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. I highly recommend riding Metra if you can. Anyway, onto the Des Plaines Metra Station itself. This station is also a Pace bus depot, so it's convenient if you use both forms of transit. I've been to a couple Metra stations, and this one is pretty nice by comparison. It's a decent size with about four large benches inside for seating. There's also a convenience stand that sells coffee, drinks and snacks, and there are two restrooms. There is an attendant on duty to sell Metra tickets, but she is a little hit or miss. Sometimes she's really nice and friendly, and other times she's cranky and seems annoyed when you want to buy a ticket. It also seems like she takes a lot of breaks. She'll put up the "back in 10 minutes" sign and not be back in 10 minutes. Metra has finally started excepting credit cards at some of its stations, but not yet in Des Plaines, which is super annoying. You either have to pay in cash or write a check. Considering the moody ticket attendant and Metra's inability to adapt to technology, I highly recommend ordering your tickets online. Overall, I think riding Metra is a great value. The Des Plaines Metra station is clean and has a nice waiting area and snack stand inside.

It had been years since taking a form of public transportation aside from the occasional taxi, and when my office opened a Chicago location, I knew I'd need to find an ideal way to travel there since I'm no longer close by. I live pretty far away, and my co-worker insisted I take the Metra. Whaaa? The train? I don't know. Yes, I had only taken the Metra once, and it was a Ravinia party train. I assumed all trains to Chicago would be just as crazy crowded. Nope - not true! The Metra has been an absolutely lovely experience. In fact, when I'm not getting dropped off or picked up, I most enjoy the ability to kick back in a comfy seat to watch the world go by, or I enjoy the opportunity to sit and work without being disturbed. Let me tell you, I make some of my best to-do lists on Wednesdays ;-) Clean (though I hear one should stay away from the train bathrooms), there are no standing passengers on my route, and I've always been warm in the winter and so far cool on warmer days. The Braeside stop has a warming house, a covered area to sit on a bench, a place to park if you're a park and ride person, and the overall commute has been ideal. I always arrive to my destination according to the online schedule. I am a train convert!

Evanston train station! This is a nice place to catch the…read moretrain- we rode the Union Pacific up to Lake Forest from here. You have to change trains, change lines, change stations here. But this little interchange in Evanston makes it easy. It's all handicapped accessible. It's super fast, there's lovely landscaping along the way between the stations on the ramp, and it's a nice smooth transition. There was lots of shade to hang out under and some seating for tired commuters. The signs were easy to read and everything was understandable. The conductors were super nice and accommodating when we needed a little extra help getting in and off the train. It was a good experience coming through Evanston for this station!

I don't take this line at a regular basis, instead take the line going to I live in the NorthWest burbs. This one is the line that goes to Evanston passing hipster neighborhoods like Ravenswood and Rogers Park. It's like the CTA, except 50-times cleaner and less scary. Living in the burbs for the last 6-years, I missed the different crowds when traveling public transportation. So I was refreshed to see a Metra train full of yuppies, suits, and beautiful women. Well, not exactly, but there is a tattoo parlor on the premises. Is it a train station? Why yes it is, and it's old and nostalgic, and when you arrive you'll feel like you just arrived at camp. There is no ticket…read morewindow, but instead there is a fantastic professional tattoo studio inside there, Hydra Electric Tattoo, run by friendly cool people. There is art on the walls and a surrealist shark sculpture hanging from the ceiling! The city made a deal to bring in artists to help the vibe and it really does. Plus, the window ledges are lined with free books donated to the Highland Park Library. An angel of a librarian picks out great ones in different categories like paperbacks, Art, crafts, literature, cooking and children's books. She comes regularly to replenish them. All this artiness and culture does a lot to chase away any bad actors that tend to hang in stations. Its surprising in a good way.
