It had been years since taking a form of public transportation aside from the occasional taxi, and when my office opened a Chicago location, I knew I'd need to find an ideal way to travel there since I'm no longer close by. I live pretty far away, and my co-worker insisted I take the Metra. Whaaa? The train? I don't know. Yes, I had only taken the Metra once, and it was a Ravinia party train. I assumed all trains to Chicago would be just as crazy crowded. Nope - not true! The Metra has been an absolutely lovely experience. In fact, when I'm not getting dropped off or picked up, I most enjoy the ability to kick back in a comfy seat to watch the world go by, or I enjoy the opportunity to sit and work without being disturbed. Let me tell you, I make some of my best to-do lists on Wednesdays ;-) Clean (though I hear one should stay away from the train bathrooms), there are no standing passengers on my route, and I've always been warm in the winter and so far cool on warmer days. The Braeside stop has a warming house, a covered area to sit on a bench, a place to park if you're a park and ride person, and the overall commute has been ideal. I always arrive to my destination according to the online schedule. I am a train convert!

It's actually perfect if you're going to Ravinia - just two stops passed it if you're coming from the city. I recommend taking the train out here a couple hours early to grab some food, then head to Ravinia with light drinks & bites to 'round out the evening. This train station could be slightly better labeled though. It wasn't completely clear which side of the tracks you should be on for which direction. I heard many confused people. They do have a building at this station so you can wait inside if you need to. I didn't find it to be that well maintained though, tons of trash everywhere unfortunately. They had some cute artwork and statues around though to class the joint up!

The platform is lit nicely, well maintained, and feels pretty safe (you see HPPD drive by a lot). The station itself has nice facilities, and is always comfortable - nice heated floors in the winter, and good airflow in the warmer months. The bathrooms are clean, though only one person can use them at a time. Parking is okay, though you sometimes have to park at one of the further lots and hike a few hundred yards to the parking kiosk and station. The vending machines are nicely maintained and seem to be regularly stocked. Weekday mornings, the little cafe has some decent coffee. If you're going north, or waiting for a Pace bus, they have some stalls you can wait in to keep warm (though I wish they were a little more enclosed). Metra is one of the less painful ways to commute to Chicago (which is sort of like saying "there's a really nice scenic route into the bowels of hell"), and the Highland Park station is probably one of the better stations along the Union Pacific North (UP-N) Metra line. Still, if you're in the neighborhood and going into Chicago; I think you're better off catching the Milwaukee District North (MD-N) line at Lake Cook Rd., since the station is nicer, the parking is easier, and departing at Union Station is often more convenient. They have practically the same arrival and departure schedule.

I tried a Kolsch lager and a Marzen lager both if which were a little cheaper than usual due to the Happy Hour Special of $5 a beer. Margaritas are $6 at Happy Hour. The beer was very good! We had a great waiter and being seated just a few feet from the bar meant no one went thirsty or hungry for long. On past visits I was seated on the back patio but we had rain on this most recent visit, and it's also March! (Patio season does not start in the Chicago area for at least another month or month and a half!) The patio is a nice little wood fenced in area with lots of tables and a back tap bar. Not sure if that set-up is still the same.... This is a great local bar with a lot of rustic, homey charm. I'd definitely recommend if you want good local beer in a friendly old-school bar.

This airport is small (to me) considering how large the city of Chicago is and a little outdated. There isn't much room to move in the gates. There are a few stations for charging devices, but when flights are delayed, there are definitely not enough. More outlets or charging stations would be beneficial. There are plenty of food options for meals and snacks. The car rental pick up process is also fairly smooth and easy to get to via train. A decent airport, but needs more charging areas.

Not one or the other was always more reasonable. However once the price was $12 difference when heading to the airport. In my option ride share is the way to go if in the city of Chicago. There are too many issues with parking and the high price that makes it counterproductive to rent. The app functioned well, better in my opinion than Lyft. I utilized Uber around 10-12 times and found on average the rides arrived in under 10 minutes. Some were within a few, but others were longer. The drivers were almost all foreign, but spoke English. They were professional and mostly knew their way around. Few instances of problems that brings the review down a star and a half I would recommend Uber. 3.5 rounding up. Always tip your driver.

When I went to pick up the vehicle, turns out the business doesnt rent to locals. So I could not rent the car. I asked them for my money back and they said I needed to go through the third party I used to make the reservation, which would be Uber. Uber is refusing to refund the money. They kept repeating that the rental company doesn't rent to locals. Ok, fine, I know that now. However, I DID NOT TAKE POSSESSION OF THE CAR OR USE IT. Therefore I am owed my money back for a car I did not pick up or use. There is nothing in the terms and services that stated the money is non refundable. It's a simple concept: I paid for a service that was not rendered therefore I get my money back. Uber did nothing but just tell me "their T&C says they do not rent to locals" and then tell me to have a nice day. I'm not trying to argue to use the car. I'm arguing that Uber doesn't get to keep my money for something that wasn't used. They've been ignoring me since their last "have a nice day" on the 18th. I've been sending emails almost every day since then and all of them have been ignored. They keep your money when they should refund it, and then they think ignoring you will make you drop it. Give me my money back.

Both cabs were clean, appeared to be well maintained, and the drivers were professional, friendly and polite. My trip was only two miles there and back, and the cost for both rides combined was just $15.00 total. Another taxi service I called first was going to charge me $40 for the trip to the same destination, and another $40 for the trip back home. That is not an exaggeration.
