I locked myself out of my condo, so I called Glenview to send a locksmith to open my front door. They told me their technician, Idan Gal, would call me back. When he did, I clearly asked him up front how much it would cost, and was quoted $65.00. We arranged a time later in the afternoon to meet. Glenview Key and Lock is located on Park Blvd. on the right side (if you are going down the hill) in an older brick building with dark green tile. When I got close to the building I could see a quirky window display with a dinosaur and lots of green for St. Patrick's Day.  During the end of March, 2021, they were only allowing one customer in the store at a time. While I was standing outside looking at the window display, a man approached me asking what I would like. He took my key and made me a duplicate. Then when the customer inside left, I went in a paid for my key. Besides making keys, if your home gets broken into they can come and assess how they can make your home more safe. They carry a wide range of hardware from simple/inexpensive to hardware made with stronger metals. If you live in an older home with antique locks and you need help with skeleton keys--they have them. I went to them a while back to get a duplicate key for my e-bike. They were able to help me where some places that just make the more common keys wouldn't have been able to help me. They also can make metal name tags for yourr dog's or cat's. I guess you could even have one made for yourself at Halloween if you were dressing up as a dog or cat. read more

Just in one house call, they (1) realigned my conventional deadbolt lock so it matched with the strike; (2) removed a not-so-great Kwikset brand smart lock (purchased from Amazon); (3) installed a new smart lock; and (4) cut extra keys for our new smart lock. Here's a shout out to Sterling, who was scheduled to visit yesterday, mid-day. He called politely to ask if the appointment could be delayed but I, with bills to pay and a locked cabinet's keys misplaced for an awfully long time, asked if he could come towards the end of the day instead, yes, and went off to get my hair cut. During the haircut, unknown to me, he called to say that he was on the way to the ER for stitches, having cut his hand. IMAGINE anybody on their way to the ER calling to let you know they'd not be there? WOW. As I got into my car I noticed the message, called and said yes, let's reschedule. I guess he didn't get that message from the company because guess what... HE CALLED a SECOND TIME to be SURE I would not be waiting for him. WOWZERS. I highly recommend ANYONE else. Just so you get the drift, this won't be a positive review (perhaps the single star set the tone :] ) I will be as matter of fact as possible and share my direct and recent experience. My relatively simple project....adjust the cylinder pins in my storage box (Vespa) so my master key could work the box and I could consolidate keys. I used Yelp to look for a list of locksmith's with decent ratings in my nearby area. After calling a guy discussing my project he immediately informed my he didn't have the proper tools and suggested I try Glenview. So I went to Glenview the next day, happy to stay relatively local. Local doesn't always mean friendly and certainly not here. The vibe is anything but welcoming, you get that upon entering. I give them a key to cut, they cut it - it is a transaction. So far no issues....they can cut keys. Explain my project. They ask if I have the cyliner...I say yes it is on my bike, can I borrow a pair of pliers to remove it to show you? They say no, we don't lend tools. At this point, I should have moved on....my gut told me this was not a place that goes the extra mile....or inch to assist. Staying local one would think "community" cuts both ways....you help me, I help you - not at Glenview. So I walk up to the local dollar store, get a pair of pliers, remove the lock, bring it in to Glenview and say here is my cylinder can you do this? They say "we should" and they write up a ticket. There is a pause....I ask, how long, how much what should I expect in terms of timing? Guy thinks about it...says $35 or $40. I then ask...when should I hear from you? Says by end of day or tomorrow..... While just looking at me, I then say ok can I have the order ticket, which he gives me. Not that I expect a dose of pleasantness with every errand, but I do feel that if you are going to be gruff at least have the ability to get the job done. No call that evening. No call by noon the next day, so I call. They say we weren't able to do it, we don't have the tools. Dang....wouldn't that have been nice to know when I disassembled the lock (NOT USING THEIR PRECIOUS TOOLS IN THE PROCESS) and gave it to them to examine? If I can talk to someone over the phone and they can say...we can't do this....then so should Glenview. Unfortunately it wasted my time and was done without a single smile. So my experience was less fortunate than others....but I ultimately did google the procedure and was able to fix it myself. I won't be trying Glenview again. read more

These guys are great! I had them at my home about 4 years ago to change all the locks after purchasing my home. At that time they were quick, efficient and friendly. Called them again today to repair my front door lock. I was told someone could be here in about 3 hours and after about 2 hours I received a call from Paul saying he could be here within 15 minutes. I went to reed brothers to get some keyed alike padlocks. The one guy at the counter was in a deep conversation with a contractor about cars (not lock related). I must have stood there almost 5 minutes before he would help, which was little to none. He seemed to just want to get back to the other guy he was shooting the breeze with . I called Glenview, they are awesome. Had in stock what I needed. I bought 3 Abus padlocks, turned out one would not fit the hasp, no problem to return next day. They sent someone who ordered the wrong hardware and color. The second person came out, saw the hardware was wrong. He came back, retreived the correct hardware and color (brass) and put in a lock where the key stays permanently in the bedroom door. So excellent service. Stay away from these clowns at all costs. Dropped off antique item needing keys and was told they would get back to me in a couple of days. Over 3 weeks I called repeatedly and was told I would get a call back which never came. These folks are fabulous! Responsive, reliable and they know old houses and their locks like no one else in the entire East Bay. I've had them fix several things in my house and they have stayed fixed where other lock and key companies failed. I called them out to the house the other day and it turned out our problem was our fault and all we had to do was push a little button. They did not even charge us for the service call. Ask for Sterling if you can. He seems to know everything there is to know about locks old and new. But I'm sure anyone else working there does as well. Don is absolutely amazing! He recently made custom keys for our vintage mortise locks, as well as cleaned and oiled the locks themselves. He even repaired one of the locks. We removed the locks from our (interior) doors ourselves and dropped them off at the shop for Don to work on. He got the job done quickly and always called to update on cost and when the keys and locks were ready. This week, we came by with 6 exterior, modern locks for rekeying, and Don did them on the spot. Total pro! This is a great local store and every time we've needed help, Glenview Lock has done a professional job. I had a difficult (almost antique) set of handles that needed to be fixed. I had to order special parts and got excellent customer service (several different conversations with different experts at Glenview) in getting everything we needed. Paul came out to install and then had to come back, each time cheerfully troubleshooting and did not charge me for the return trips. Everyone was focused on making me happy which I appreciated so much!!! My partner is a black woman and was profiled today by this business. They asked her to remain outside while they worked to satisfy her request of making a duplicate key in the store. They returned outside and they explained that due to the manufacturer of the key, they're not able to duplicate the key. Understandable and fine. However, they asked the white woman behind her in line about what service she needed which was also to make a copy of the key and they immediately allowed her to enter the retail space. Why was the white woman allowed in while my black partner had to remain outside while the store was empty? My partner was also met with skepticism as if she was in the process of doing something she is not supposed to do in making a second copy of a key to our home. This encounter was a perfect example of profiling. BlPOC and allies - do not support this business. read more
