I scheduled a routine dental exam and cleaning, yet my visit lasted nearly two hours. After the exam, I was told I needed what they called "special scaling in the presence of generalized moderate tartar," which would cost $229 out of pocket, on top of what my insurance already covers. I visit the dentist 2-3 times a year and have never once been told I needed a "special" cleaning. When I declined this additional charge, they ended my visit immediately and did not offer a basic cleaning at all. I was told this was due to "dental ethics," which made no sense considering I had scheduled and waited specifically for a cleaning. Because I was frustrated and confused, I asked to speak with the office manager. Suddenly, the same "special cleaning" was offered for $67, which only raised more concerns. To make matters worse, this "special cleaning" turned out to be exactly like every standard cleaning I've ever received. This entire experience felt pressure-driven and financially motivated, not patient-focused. I left feeling misled and taken advantage of. I strongly encourage others to ask detailed questions, request clear explanations, and consider a second opinion before agreeing to any out-of-pocket charges. Please beware.

But she took my call and had me laughing in no time, which really helped because I was in so much pain. A little backstory, my braces were removed in 2021. A year later, my permanent retainer was moving my teeth. My orthodontist took full blame and put braces on the bottom of my teeth to correct them. The process was finished in April. Well, the left side of my head and face became very painful. The orthodontist said the retainer mold was wrong and replaced that... Fast forward, I moved to Texas, and now I'm at the doctor's because my face is swollen, and on to the Berkeley Eye Center. I'll spare you the rest. So now, I have the kindest woman named Sherri on the phone, who I consider a friend now. She told me to come on in, she'll send the paperwork through email, and she'll see me at two. She didn't stop there; once I got there and finished the exam, I thought I had to come back for them to put the proper braces on. Nope, Sherri said we can do the braces today, and they did! I decided to drive the 30+ minutes back to this office, and I've never looked back. Dr. Harpavat is incredibly knowledgeable, honest, and conservative in her approach. She never recommends unnecessary treatment and always takes the time to explain her recommendations. As a parent, that gives me tremendous peace of mind. I certainly don't remember feeling that way as a child, and I think that says a lot about the caring and welcoming environment she has created. As a microbiologist and scientist myself, I value evidence-based, ethical healthcare providers. I trust Dr. Harpavat completely with my children's dental care. I also can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Lankford, who has been my dentist. Years ago, I suffered an injury that fractured my front tooth and damaged several lower teeth. Eventually, the root of the crowned front tooth became infected and could not be saved. Dr. Lankford guided me through every step of the process, referred me to an outstanding oral surgeon for my implant, and later restored it with a beautiful, high-quality crown. Throughout the entire experience, he was compassionate, supportive, and always available to answer my questions. The final result looks and feels amazing, and I couldn't be happier. His skill, honesty, and attention to detail are exceptional. Both Dr. Harpavat and Dr. Lankford are dentists I trust completely. The other doctor was going to place a crown over an old filling and decays, but luckily their permanent crown broke upon seating and I was able to see Dr. Lankford for a second opinion. The nitrous was 1/3 of the cost of the other office I went to and my crown was extremely reasonably priced.
