It's a vast open beach with no shade and it's beautiful! Unfortunately for us when we went the wind was so incredibly wicked it was like an getting assaulted by the beach the second we walked onto open sand and it whisked my sons bucket down the shoreline which was tricky to get back lol so we didn't last long lol if the weather was better I imagine we could spend a day there. Bring a lunch and when you're ready go shower clean up eat and let the kids play at the park!

It has some facilities and there are picnic tables, but this is also the kind of island that has a lot of mosquitos so I would be heading towards the beach. This area has some inland water that is apparently permanent enough that they've put pontoon bridges over it, which is kind of cool. The beach here is a little bit wider than on other nearby areas, so the tide is not forcing you to literally sit on a dune and you can walk around the surf fishers. So it is a decent ocean beach, if still on the crowded side.

There was also an extremely knowledgeable person inside who gave us a ton of info about the history and the fort. We then ventured outside (bug spray may be a good idea here!) and looked at the various spots with info and the history of the butcher, baker, candlestick maker as well as the other jobs around the fort. The actual building ruins are interesting and picturesque by the water. You could easily spend a while here meandering and learning. 100% worth a visit if you are nearby!

Pay your $10 per car fee to get onto Jekyll Island, qnd drive 4 miles north. Enjoy the 1950's - to modern home styles, as the drive is a beautiful one. There is street parking, but only on the left side of the street and only about 14 parking spots. The walk to the beach is easy to moderate while walking thru soft sand, until the beach, where ancient trees lay on their sides, and roots make for a gorgeous view. The day we were here, the beach was littered with the bodies of cannon ball jellyfish, which are surprisingly solid, so watch your feet. Enjoy the temperate water of the Atlantic ocean and the bright South Ga Sun for a perfect afternoon.

This is a very pretty park in downtown SSI. There are ball fields and a playground, and across the…read morestreet at Kings Park are tennis and pickleball courts, and a dog park. But if you're parking at Mallery, expect to just access the ball fields, restrooms and playground because the road between the parks is pretty busy (and there is a separate lot over there anyway). Parking at Mallery was ample on a weekday evening in March, even with softball practice in session. The playground has wood chips to keep things soft for kids. The slide/climbing structure is REALLY HIGH. I was really uncomfortable letting my toddler climb it. He was playing with older kids who were keeping an eye on him otherwise I'd not have allowed it. Parents of little ones, beware. Other apparatuses, like see-saw and swings were fine, but a small children area would be nice. I'm grateful they had bathrooms, which is a step up from nothing or port-a-potties. However, the bathrooms were DISGUSTINGLY FILTHY. Like a stench, trash all over the floor, and even a broken lollipop to stick to your shoes. Yuk! Overall the park is great, just make sure to use your bathroom at home before you visit!

The employees and camp hosts are friendly and helpful. There is lots of trails and wildlife to enjoy. Anytime we have had issues, they are promptly addressed and rectified. The only slight drawback is the paper mill stench. It can be quite awful at times. Oh! And the noseeum's. Bring bug spray! We regularly visit Savannah, Jacksonville, St Simons, Jekyll Island, Amelia Island and Okefenokee National Park while staying here. Brunswick has all the necessities you would need and is a nice town. Husband always visits the Pinball Palace! Highly recommend staying a while and really exploring the beauty of this area.

Transients like me and longer term stays are available in the campground. There's just something about being waterside that I find helpful for my mood and my productivity, I was here for about two hours for phone calls and emails, sitting in the van and listening to the quiet lapping of the shore. There are activities here including picnic shelters, a playground, a fishing pier and a boat launch with crane. I was able to watch them pull a boat in with the crane and load it onto a trailer. We had a chance to visit Great Dunes Park a couple of weekends ago. This is definitely the beach to…read morecheck out if you want to avoid the crowds at Tybee Beach or even Hilton Head, although it will require about an hour or so drive south from Savannah and similarly, north from Jacksonville. They also charge a toll to get into the beach community with state residents paying I believe six dollars or so and out of state residents paying closer to 10. However, it's definitely worth it as there is plenty of parking along the entire island beach strip, including a really great fishing pier at the end of the island that also has a bait and tackle shop located within the park. We found the beach to be clean, the facilities to be well kept, and more importantly, not overly crowded. The beach here is well traveled, however so this is not soft, supple sand, but much more hard packed, which allows for running, bike riding and recreational activities in general. There were several families fishing in the same vicinity of other families playing in the water which could present a bit of concern with regard to potential hooks and fishing tackle in the surf, but it didn't seem to bother anybody. This is definitely going to be our go to beach for the foreseeable near future.

We love to get here early to find a good spot, but be mindful that the beach can get busy during peak season. Either way, this beach never feels super packed, and is one of my favorites in the region. Love that it's dog friendly, just be mindful of the on and off leash times that coincide with peak season.

Wonderful historic site that was a former rice plantation. The same family lived in the home for…read moremultiple generations and the last heir left the estate to the state of Georgia. Beautiful antiques, cool grounds, and amazing landscape. All left in It's original state. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts. Definitely worth visiting!

The history of this region is worth thinking about, but tough to see. Most of these sorts of…read moreplantations are long abandoned; the story of how this one fell into the hands of the state government is told, along with other context, on a half-hour tour of their small mansion. The tour starts on the hour, and having arrived shortly in advance, they told me to drive down a service road that said not to drive down on it so I could park at the house and make it on time. The tour content focuses on the family line that owned the house; there is some discussion of the people they owned early in its history, but a more detailed take on the forced labor system involved in rice farming is given in the museum back where one starts. It is a distinctive and difficult topic, but the films they play offer a relatively level-headed take. The area is very swampy now; I got outside of the house and thought to wander around and take pictures, but was immediately beset by flies. Fortunately, I had the luxury of my car. Seeing these places in person makes one wonder how anyone ever lived and labored here without modern conveniences. There's plenty of food for thought.
