GNC at Port Authority Bus Terminal is right across from where I had coffee. While I was waiting for my friend to arrive on the bus I stopped in for a quick look. It's the same as the other GNC locations with good service and well stocked. I find it expensive. On my way through Port Authority to catch a Coach Shortline to go hiking in the mountains, I stopped at GNC to grab a healthy, refreshing Chlorophyll Water enhanced with lovely vitamins. I have been a GNC member since at least 2005. The gentleman, I believe his name is Christopher, informs me that there is a discount for the item that I am purchasing with a membership. OH YAY! I give him my email address (a .aol address) and he finds the address in "the system" (his words, not mine) yet he's unable to apply the discount because he claims that "the system" won't acknowledge my email address. Wait, huh? Make it make sense. My email address is in "the system," he finds my email address in "the system," however, he is unable to apply the discount because "the system" something else or another. * sigh * He then asks me if perhaps I have another email address, to create a NEW membership account, since "the system" doesn't like .aol email address that has already been there for some time yet is suddenly no good. GREAT IDEA! I give him an email address that ends with .iCloud and he immediately tells me, "Oh, the system has problems with iCloud addresses too." * sigh * Nothing that he is mansplaining makes any sense at all. I'm literally standing there, through all of this, fantasizing about how I should have gone to Hudson News and purchased a SmartWater in less than 2 minutes flat - yet - I'm standing in GNC for going on nearly 10 minutes trying to unsuccessfully purchase one bottle of Chlorophyll Water amidst jocularity about GNCs failed "system" for members. Because "the system" is only effective sometimes. Dear GNC "system" - I believe that the poor customer service experienced at this visit has just reminded me of why I stopped shopping with you. Located on the ground floor of the sprawling, much-maligned Port Authority Bus Terminal, toward the Eighth Avenue end of the building on W. 42nd Street, this store is a stone's throw from a veritable cornucopia of fast-food options and serves as the one, non-sodium-laden options to consume. The store is large, airy, well stocked and appropriately staffed by eager nutrition buffs, which is quite common for GNC stores throughout the city, with the lamentable exceptions, of course. The employees seem to know their business, even though I might quarrel with the perceived necessity of nutritional supplements and vitamins in the first place. Read a respected medical journal, such as The Lancet, for more on this. Prenatal vitamins, however, are one area in which I'm not willing to fall short. In this store, they're located in the middle of the right-hand wall, about three feet from the ground. They'll ask you if you have or want a gold GNC card, but I've found that I don't use it enough to qualify the expense, even after three kids in three years! The convenience of this store and the efficiency of the store clerks made me feel warm and fuzzy, and I'll definitely be back here if I need to pick up more prenatal vitamins anytime soon. This GNC is filled with knowledgeable employees who know exactly which do's and don'ts will work for your specific workout regimen. The manager Chris here has been my go to guy for workout advice, supplement advice, and diet advice for two and a half years now. And he has not steered me wrong once yet. I truly believe he has trained his staff to be as knowledgeable as himself, because they have been just as helpful when he is not working. Chris and his staff are always honest and upfront about which products will work for you and your body type, and give you a clear explanation as to what expectations you should or shouldn't have. I have been to numerous GNC's and other vitamin shops throughout my life in Manhattan and the tri state area.. but this store is by far the best for a great experience, explanation of any products, and you will always leave satisfied! read more

GNC has become a joke and this one, located at the Port Authority Bus terminal on the first floor near the trains, is a standout. I rarely ever shop in GNCs because I don't need inexperienced, brainless salespeople barely making ends meet and barely out of college to tell me what to purchase when all I need is a new vitamin bottle or perhaps a box of protein. Speaking of such, I'd run out of protein bars just a week ago, and because I was going to spend a good five hours in the movie theatres (and am in the process of having major home renovations, so no refrigerator, no food) figured I'd get me a box of protein bars. I hadn't stepped fully into their location when a kid no more than 20 yells at me, "Get two, and the third is free." Mind you, I'd seen the sale on the tab in front of the protein bars so I already knew this but this is GNC, where salespeople treat customers like they need to make a sale or die trying. Even if the customer doesn't want it. So, immersed in my own bubble as I prepped mentally for my movie, o ignored the kid and proceeded to get me two boxes of Quest protein bars. After placing it on the counter I decide to take advantage of their sale and get me a third. After confirming with the girl who checked me out, she makes a nudge to notify the kid who yelled at me in the first place. He yells back with this cocky attitude, "You're welcome." So this paragraph goes to that kid. If you see a guy like me walk in, greet amicably, and wait. Don't talk to me. I've been shopping at health food stores since I was 21 and I'm 48. I know exactly what I want. I don't want your sales pitches, I don't give a shit about your self-confident pat on the back look at me doing sales. You are terrible, you need to be educated in customer service, and you need a lesson in humility. If I ask you--then talk to me and give me advice. Then you can pitch whatever you think it is I need and anyway, I'll still get what I know fits me best. Being a smug asshole doesn't and won't get you far. You're welcome. read more

This store never honors GNC promotions. The latest example: I received an email coupon for a free 14 day supply of Tamaflex, no purchase required. Yesterday they told me they had it but hadn't unpacked the shipment. When I said I'd wait they told me to come back tomorrow. So today I walk in and hand my coupon to a salesperson and without even looking at it and checking was told they never got it. This was even after what the person had told me the day before. This is typical of this store and I won't be shopping here again. read more
