I came inside looking for loose leaf black tea and to see if they had a specific type of Kombucha, and it seemed like they had every variety of Kombucha and healthy sodas available. They also have a large variety of health foods, including fresh produce, nuts, herbs, drinks, snacks, frozen items, pantry items, bathroom and hygiene, etc. There's also a small cafe where you can order juices and smoothies. It's a surprisingly large space that is filled to the brim, so it can be a bit overwhelming walking inside. The service was pretty friendly as well. The only drawback is that the items can be a bit pricier but I think it's still a nice spot for items you might not be able to find at other grocers. read more

Automatically it makes it better than the national chains. You can find lots of healthy ingredients somewhere on the shelves or you can have them make a sandwich for you. Healthy food is unfortunately expensive. It seems higher than a typical grocery store. The prices are however comparable to Whole Foods, which means it's typical for an organic store. Also find out about the deals. There's often some kind of sale going on. My favorite is the deli area. This is a corner where customers can order sandwiches and stuff at the counter. It includes the smoothie bar. They mix all kinds of fruits and non dairy milks. I like getting a smoothie with a sandwich, for a complete healthy breakfast or lunch. The smoothies are about $7 for a large. It has salads that are sold by the pound or with bread. The sandwiches and wraps are about $8 or so. It fills your healthy needs. This (UES location) is our corner store but I would make the trip to come here even if it wasn't, for the reliability of really fresh, beautiful, organic produce and the beautifully curated selection of organic and health food products that they have. Even when we have considered moving, losing our local Health Nuts has been a (prominent) factor in not wanting to leave the neighborhood. It is that compelling of a resource for our organic produce and groceries. We live in an area with an abundance of options: Morton Williams, Whole Foods, Grace's, corner fruit stands, recently Trader Joe's (which I love but whose nationally distributed and plastic packaged produce is still far inferior to Health Nuts). We purposefully choose Health Nuts for its consistent quality, especially the produce. I love in particular that EVERYTHING in the produce section is organic, as opposed to every other grocery store where you have to hunt for the specific organic section, or where organics are mixed in with non-organics and you never know for sure what you are getting. I love that I can rely on my produce to ALL BE ORGANIC when I buy from here. The quality is also exceptional, especially the fresh greens selections, bursting with color and freshness. Very reliable, consistent, high quality. I also love that the vegetables are mostly unpackaged, so you are reducing disposable waste when you shop here. Also, they have an awesome bulk foods section with canisters filled with all kinds of legumes, grains, nuts, granolas, and dried fruits--with no packaging! Plus their own peanut butter and almond butter machines to make it fresh before your eyes with the flip of a switch. Environmental efforts like that make me go out of my way to shop here, and the quality makes the (admittedly higher) prices worthwhile to me. But honestly even when I go to dirty old Gristedes the prices aren't even always lower! Non organic things will always be cheaper, so you have to compare apples to apples :)! We can each do our share to influence climate change by voting with our dollars where we buy, what we buy, and what we don't. Paying higher for organic, non packaged items is not possible all the time or for everyone I understand, but it is a priority in the big picture that I appreciate Health Nuts gives me the option to elect. In that sense, when I can afford to pay more for organic/local unpackaged items, I will, because even if organic/local wasn't better for me, it is an attempt to make more responsible choices for our world. The grocery section can be expensive but it is convenient and they have good products, often with weekly 30% off sales off the ticket price. And again, all the selection of organic groceries all in one place without having to question what is organic (or more responsible than mainstream) and what isn't also applies in the dry goods (and dairy and home and beauty) and EVERY section of the store. I know it is expensive, but for the most part, its existence does us a service because otherwise we wouldn't even have the option to get so many high quality organic products all in one place. No other store offers that variety and quantity of reliably organic. I noticed a reviewer say it's a small store but actually I think it's a huge corner store for Manhattan! It's not a supermarket chain, it's a local grocer. And in that category, it takes up at least two rental spaces (they expanded awhile back) and is very spacious. I can usually find anything I need to make anything in a pinch, including Asian sauces and products. They don't have fresh meat or seafood sections, but they have frozen high quality stuff, plus packaged cold cuts, charcuterie, dairy and vegan cheeses, and grass-fed (not just pasture-raised, I learned there's a difference!) eggs and milk. And tons of vitamins and supplements, and even hydroflasks and klean kanteens. Pretty much everything you could need. I still of course shop everywhere for different things, but this is my go-to store for most everything, especially produce! And I'm not sure about the delivery grocery service, but in person, I've only ever had really friendly encounters with all the staff, who greet me with kindness and a smile every time I go in, which has been for years now. I was really excited to find such a huge store with healthy items that I spent about 30 minutes filling my cart before my drive back to Philly. What I forgot to do, because of my enjoyment while shopping there, was to check the expiration dates. I spent 10.00 on a box of cereal, Ezekiel Low Sodium, only to find that it expired 4 months earlier. I only checked bc of the odor. I am extremely disappointed. I've seen face creams, books, soaps, yogurt, teas, candles, ice cream, natural and organic food, appliances, cleaning products and of course vitamins and supplements plus many many more. They carry their brand plus an assortment of others. To a corner of the store ( 3rd ave side), there's a deli section where you can get smoothies, juices, sandwiches, salads, soups and what looks like vegetarian meals. I tried a banana and strawberry smoothie but I didn't like it. I'm not saying it wasn't nice, just maybe my stomach has to be acclimated to such healthy foods. Hahaha I'm always here and have no idea why I wasnt "checking in" before but I'll be back just NOT at the smoothie bar. "Nutty for healthy food" I have passed this store on my way to work pretty much everyday for the 5 years and my starvation made me enter to get a quick bite to eat. I went with a the "liver cleanse" juice formula and I was pleasantly shocked on how delicious it tasted and the price was mot bad either. The store looks like it has everything that a health nut would be interested in - vitamins, random soy products, gluten free stuff, etc. The store appears to be clean and well organized. I used to swing by here quite often before I discovered A Matter of Health, which was closer AND had these ridiculous sales on Greek yogurts. If I were the type of person who "lived cleanly" and appreciated the value of a good organic product, I could see myself coming by to stock up on not only the food but also the supplements, vitamins, beauty products, and medicine tucked deeper into the store. As it were, I only ever came by for the snacks. Which were wildly overpriced. I would look at the price, think it was the regular price, scoff at how someone could buy it and have rent left over, and then realize I was looking at the sale price. I didn't really like any of the prepared foods I picked up once in a blue moon. Can a food taste too clean? I tried the soba noodles and tempeh sandwich, and both times I felt like I was consuming something cooked in a lab rather than in a kitchen. I sure felt like the healthiest nut as I was eating it but I also noticed something about prepared vegan and vegetarian foods in general - it's either soaked in salt or lacking any seasoning whatsoever. The soba noodles were incredibly bland while the tempeh was way, way too salty. Still, I sometimes miss how they had over 15 different varies of sprouted wholegrain crackers (and yes, I counted). read more

But this place is great for: 1) Fresh made juices with every possible combo of fruits and vegetables and super foods 2) Incredible and reasonably priced selection of seeds and nuts by the pound. 3) Fresh fruit, veggies and produce that is less expensive and fresher than nearby supermarkets like Morton Williams and FAR less than Grace's Marketplace or Gristede's. 4) Vitamins and supplements of every imaginable kind. This store carries good products and has sales, which makes more economically than the nearby Morton Williams. The staff here however is completely rude and unhelpful. They have no concept of customer service or the customer is always right. I accidentally dropped a bottle on the floor. I told one of the clerks, who ignored me. Suddenly the whole staff was there berating me, telling me I should have taken a basket. If you go to any big grocery, they get shrug at such an accident​ and clean it up. These people acted like I killed their first born. They are absolutely unprofessional and unkind. I've been going here for so many years, not even sure how many, and one of my favorite items is those healthy muffins that I've been eating weekly for 20 years. I just purchased one here, with an exp date of 8/7 (6 days way), I bit into it and it was OFF. Entirely gone bad and funky, nobody would ever eat it. I told the lady who's been there forever about it, and she yelled at me, saying they're perfectly fresh and were delivered 3 days ago. I told her I've probably eaten 300 of these in my life and have supported her store forever, but she proceeded to yell at me, through the muffin across the store into the trash, and told me they're fresh. Clearly she had just entered the area saw me waiting for assistance, but was determined to help a women with her back turned leaving in stead of helping me, while insisting she was helping another customer. I have been going to this health nuts for quite some time. It's close by, and has been the most convenient health store up until Matter Of Health moved into my neighborhood. Many times I have found the staff to be disinterested, but I don't go in much, so it's never been an issue. That was until yesterday... and, just before I recount my experience, I read through some of the reviews for them, and have to say, those who gave them 1 or 2 stars have written very accurate accounts of what the store/employees are like. I asked the man behind the juice bar to make me a smoothie. Each time I've seen this man in the past, he has NEVER smiled, and usually looks annoyed, and yesterday was no exception. I asked him to make me a delicious protein smoothie with either pea or rice protein, and some fruit. He gave it to me, I paid for it, and went to leave. I tasted it, and was disgusted how it tasted like chalk! I came back in, and went over to tell him. He said, "I gave you what you asked for." I said, "I asked for a delicious protein smoothie. This tastes like chalk." To which he replied, "That's what you ordered." Really? I repeated I asked for a delicious protein smoothie, and this was awful. He replied, "maybe next time." I looked at him, and said, "are you kidding?" He just walked away. The manager, Roy, was in ear shot of all this, and, after I left the drink on the counter to walk out, I saw him and began to tell him how rude that whole encounter was.. I was shaking inside, because, first, I couldn't believe that someone would talk to another person like that, especially in a health food store, where one would think that they have some consciousness about kindness , but that there wasn't even the slightest concern that I was upset, that they had made something that there was a complaint about, and for them it was TOO BAD FOR YOU! That is a NASTY NASTY person behind that juice bar.. Who would go subject themselves to that, when Matter of Health is right in the neighborhood? They are sooooooo nice and helpful there. I feel a bit ashamed at writing that previous review, and at the same time, I stand by it. Lemme explain. Health Nuts isn't what I'd call a friendly and fuzzy place. Neither the typical clientele nor the staff warm my heart. And I'm being very diplomatic here. But... it is 2 blocks from where I work, and on any given day, I can stop in at lunchtime, head to the back counter, and get some steamed or curried vegetables, plain tofu, chickpea or lentil salad, sauteed broccoli with sesame seeds, quinoa salad or some variation of these, that causes my co-workers to compare me with a rabbit, but I think provides the perfect lunch. Okay, maybe not perfect. But easy, "real," tasty, reasonably priced, and undoubtedly vegan. I also have a great love for their "Health Nut Factory" dried bagged papaya (yes, I realize it doesn't sound as appealing as I promise it is) and their Emmy's brand macaroons in a variety of flavors. I can't bring myself to bump Health Nuts up to 4 stars. Let's settle on 3.2, say? read more

Check your receipt! I shop at this store often because it has a good selection of healthy foods, good prices, and is one of the few places in Manhattan with bulk foods. Unfortunately, this store is poorly and perhaps dishonestly managed. Let me explain. Each of the last three times I have been to Health Nuts, I noticed that the check out person rang prices higher than what was on the price tag (everything in the store is marked with a price tag). The first time I stopped him and pointed out that he rang the wrong price. He replied that the price on the item was incorrect and he rang the correct price! Now I could have understood if he had said to me "I'm sorry, sir, this item was mis-priced so I have to ring it at a different price or you can choose another item." But he didn't say that; he just rang the higher price and hoped I wouldn't notice! I now watch closely and notice that a good 5-10% of the items they ring are not what's on the price tag. I'm not sure if this is intentional or a matter of poor management. I've looked at their pricing on the shelves, and there are often two different prices for the same item. For example, half of the bottles of the men's multivitamin I take were priced at $28 and half at $35. So this may confuse cashiers at the checkout. But this is no excuse for charging customers above the listed price. In fact, I believe charging more than the listed price without disclosing it to the customer is a violation of consumer protection laws (or perhaps worse fraud). This is the only good health food store within walking distance of my apartment, so I continue to go. But I caution other shoppers to keep a close eye on what prices they ring at the checkout counter. read more

I don't live in the area, but I wandered in, blissed-out from my acupuncture appointment nearby, and was amazed by this cavernous health food store on the Upper East Side. They have Daiya cheese wedges! Yay! That alone makes it worth the trek. They have an amazing assortment of natural foods--I was a little bit mesmerized by all the kinds of pasta--as well as books, supplements, and supplies. I live near this store and have been in love with it since the first day I walked in. They have a truly wide range of health foods and products - many of which are usually tricky to find. They've always been very helpful whenever I ask them any questions. A few weeks ago my friend forgot her bag at the store (filled with her computer, ipad and pricey work shoes). First at all, I want to say that this is my first time giving just one star to a place. I started going to this place because I like the idea to support these small stores other than WholeFoods or Trader Joe's and especially at the beginning I was very happy to shop here. However, this initially excitement for this shop has been disappearing (and indeed it ended) by the time for many reasons. First at all, the stuff is very very unfriendly and it seems almost being annoyed all the time, in particular when you ask something. Second, I found (and not only once) bugs in the brown rice from the dispenser and, when I complained with them, also by showing the bugs in the rice bag, of course they didn't apologize. Reading these reviews, I also discovered that they have mice inside the shop, which explains to me why they have a cat in the shop. Third, be careful to check the expiration date of the products (and I'm not referring only to the fresh products) but also to others. The result of these is that I'm getting back to shop to WholeFoods and Trader Joe's, since I don't wanna deal neither with its stuff nor ending up always buying food that I have to trash. They have a great selection of healthy choices and I'm a regular. I come here on average twice a week. Some items are overpriced while many other items are either reasonably priced or cheaper than other stores. So it's a mix of price and worth checking out. But beware, and reason for 2 star deduction, they have a scattered check out system. There are 4 registers, 3 within reasonable proximity of each other, then a 4th register about 10-15 feet away facing a different direction. The signs "line forms here" by the 3 register do not help much since they are 15 feet away from the 4th register. As a result customers unknowingly cut the line (because they didn't see the line or the sign) to go to the 4th register. Sometimes a line forms on the 4th register then the cashier sends them all to the line and the customers get very frustrated. Other times customers go straight to the 4th register, and that frustrates the customers standing in the line at the other 3 registers. The worst part is the cashier at the 4th register only spontaneously checks to see if there's a line, but otherwise accepts anyone who randomly walks up to them without checking if there's a line. It would make sense to move the 4th register NEXT TO the other registers. There's plenty of space to do so. But I think the people who work there secretly get aroused by watching customers flip with their scattered check out system. So, there's that. Either that, or they're being cheap and don't understand that by improving the flow they increase their revenue. read more

I feel healthy when I go here. Even if I consume a 16oz steak the night before my shopping trip... which recently happened. Yes, this store is THAT healthy. Clearly I'm not vegan, nor am I organic-food-obsessed, but this store has everything a health-seeking person could want. (Please don't ask me to elaborate -- I still don't understand half the organic/vegan/gluten-free/everything-free products here, but they look lovely). I decided to try a pre workout smoothie. Inside, there seems to be a vast selection of everything healthy. Pre made food looked great, great prices. My smoothie wasn't great at all. Only drank half. I had to cut my workout short because I started having severe cramps and was burping up lots of air. Was there dairy in my smoothie?? I wanted to keel over and die of pain and nausea on my elliptical. Cashier guy was non friendly. The guy who made my smoothie was super sweet. I'll go to my usual smoothie place.
