Amish market is overpriced at times but you seem to be paying for more artisan things. Overall, if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick grocery run, this place will have you covered. We just flew in from California to experience New York. One of my daughters and I were looking for a treat. We came across Amish Market and the pastries looked great. We got a Carmel cake and two eclairs to take back to share with our other family members. The caramel cake was super dry. The cake layers were really dry and coarse, like biting into a dried out loofah. The eclairs were equally disappointing. My other daughter, who loves pastries, took one bite and set it down, stating, "I'm done, it tastes like the bag of came in. " i bit into it, the eclair was super dry and tasted like something that had been sitting, unwrapped, in the freezer for months. Dry and disturbing taste $20 wasted and no treats! Went to Amish Market West this morning for breakfast with a few friends who are semi- regulars. We went back to the deli counter about 10:50 or so to order sandwiches. We had to wait several minutes for someone to get behind the counter and help us. When he arrived, we promptly placed our orders for egg sandwiches, and he informed us that they "don't do egg sandwich sandwiches after 11am". It was 11:01. So disappointing. This market is grocery shopping heaven on earth! I am a born and bred native New York City-er who now lives in upstate NY. I always miss the variety of produce and culinary products. When I saw the store name, "Amish Market" it immediately intrigued me. This is not something typically found in NYC. I had to go in. Oh, my goodness!!! I don't know how I will live without this store where I live. They have everything! It is a cornucopia of a market! As much as I love the atmosphere and service, the food could use a bit of polishing. The Amish Market certainly has its gems when it comes to the wide range of unique products you can find here. There are some interesting soaps, jams, beverages, and lots more that will make it worth any trip you pursue to make your way to the Amish Market. Although I haven't interacted with the market aspect of this location enough to give a substantive opinion on it, I can appreciate the vast selection of cultural products available. There are pre-assorted meals available (rotisserie chicken packaged with vegetables, for example) but I usually come here to eat at the food bar. The presentation of the food is marvelous. My mouth waters as soon as the automatic doors separate because I know I'm in for a show. The food selection is always diverse and colorful, and for $10.99 a pound you can fix yourself a pretty decent plate. This time, I went for the roasted chicken leg, rice with beef stew gravy, chicken breast with béchamel sauce and cheese, and Albanian fried liver. Everything, with tax, came together to $18.30 so you can get a nice amount of food without breaking the bank. However, the food tends to hit or miss. I found that the roasted chicken leg was cooked a bit less than I would've liked and the flavor was minimal. The fried liver also carried a similar deficiency in flavor, but it redeemed itself with the texture. Tender is absolutely an understatement, so it was a pretty good add-on for the rice which is always reliable. The rice never fails to wow me with how soft and seasoned it is. Pairing it with whatever gravy or sauce is available helps the rice to reach its full potential. The chicken breast with béchamel sauce also came to rescue this meal. The sauce was light and creamy, the chicken was cooked excellently so the flavors agreed nicely with the sauce and vegetables, and the entire portion was reminiscent of a pot pie with more of an ethnic kick. The cheese finished it off with a nice layer of chewy and buoyant texture. While the meal was commendable, it was a bit greasy overall. In all fairness, that could just be on behalf of my work with the utensils. Generally, I see the Amish Market as a box of Lucky Charms. You can find some very interesting and delicious items, but you really never know what you'll get. This time, the meal was average but the food available at the food bar regularly rotates so one imperfect experience shouldn't deter you from visiting this location. In Hell's Kitchen area of 50th St and 9th Ave, we came across this little market and decided to enter on a whim. What a pleasant surprise! Such a clean, bright, and well laid-out neighborhood grocery. Very like a miniature Whole Foods grocery with a high quality of produce. It's actually kind of a gourmet foods store too, with a prepared foods section, deli counter (with whole slabs of nova salmon (lox), scottish smoked salmon, and norwegian smoked salmon!), a large assortment of olives and pickles, and cheeses. I'm sure it's priced a little higher than other groceries in the area (let alone NYC), but it sure looks worth it for the quality, diversity, and convenience. read more

A mixed bag here. The nicest cashiers you'll find anywhere--helpful and courteous. And a good selection of food, including some more rarely-found items and international selections you find in high-end places. The prices are high, but it's an NYC semi-gourmet grocery store. The downsides: the way the food is stored leaves something to be desired. On multiple occasions we've gotten frozen yogurt pops, for instance, that clearly had melted and refrozen, such that the stick gets absorbed by the pop and barely sticks out. I got some pre-made pesto ravioli there that wasn't due to expire until a few days after I purchased it, only to discover it was very spoiled when I bit into it (that tingling on the tongue that comes with fermentation). Gross. I'll keep shopping there when we're staying in the area, but it's indeed a mixed bag (and remember to bring your own bag when you do your food shopping in New York!) --just looked at some of the other reviews who also reported buying stale and spoiled food. Not sure what coffee they use but whatever it is it's good. They even go the extra step to steam their milk so that the coffee is actually hot and has better flavor. Cheap too. Woof. I thought this Amish market was related to the one in the East side on 45th. Boy, was I wrong. I'm a chicken salad BLT on a toasted hero kind of cat. I eat it like 2x a week when I'm at work. But only the east side location. I'm stuck on the west side now and decide to try the Amish market over here. Got my usual sandwich which they only charge 10.99 on the east vs 12.99 on the west... FOR THE SAME SANDWICH. And the west side one is trashhhh. 5.7/10. I thought the twin deli guys floated all over but they hold down the east side. There's a small smoothie bar in the corner of the market. You can pick from a pre selected menu or make your own. The smoothie are fantastic but I'm not too excited over the prices. A medium size smoothie is $6.99. They have a wide range of healthy snacks throughout the market, some of which I've never heard of but was tempted to try. I ordered two salads: the chicken Caesar salad and the four seasons salad. Both were fresh and medium-portioned, but exactly mediocre. They were decently fresh and delivered the party line. No flash, no novelty, just two salads as one would expect from an airport takeaway kiosk. For some reason, I had anticipated something more marvelous, akin to the glorious, robust creations (bolstered by whole fat milk, cream and butter) often found of the Amish at Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market. Alas, these were hardly evocative of those sanguine-cheeked young men and women. While nothing was amiss here, per say, this was lacking of the wonders associated with the Amish. More than a bodega. A good selection of items. Slightly pricey, but cheaper than gristedes. They always have fresh herbs, high quality vegetables and fruit. They even have pate de foie gras and a nice selection of cheese, charcuterie, and pickles. One of the few places that you can buy ayran, the yogurt based middle eastern drink, and also high quality French yogurt. They even have fresh chanterelles at a reasonable price. I'm not sure why all the bad reviews, don't go here to buy your prime steak or seafood, but do go here for everyday Staples and high quality produce. read more

This market is a nice alternative to the stuff that is being dished out at Gristedes and other nearby supermarkets. They have a lot of quality stuff that is mainly organic, though they're being sold for hefty prices. Some folks would consider this place gourmet, but I have seen more of that at Whole Foods than I have here. Since they became 24 hours last year, avoid coming here for any of their hot food between midnight and 6AM. Do your part and go to a diner instead because the food is NASTY. I saw flies swarming all over leftover food, completely dried up from the heater firing it up. If you have to, buy something wrapped but expect to pay a premium for it. read more

I'll be the first to admit that some of the oddest things interest me. One of them is walking through food stores to see what they have to offer. I get a kick out of finding things in stores that I haven't seen before or seeing a wide variety of items that I don't see elsewhere. It was this type of experience I was anticipating when entering Amish Market. A former coworker of mine used to *rave* about the Amish Market near my job (across town on the East Side) and after taking a walk through, I could tell why. Almost like an island of calm from the wacky and hectic world outside in Hell's Kitchen. The lighting is warm and the atmosphere is comfortable. The front has the cashiers and a seating area for the hot food you can buy in the store. The spread I saw included items like rice, barbecue chicken, curry stew and more. There were salad items as well. On the left side of the store are most of the dairy items including milk, ice cream, cheese and more. The regular groceries are found from the middle to the right side. The right side is where you'll find household items and cleaning supplies. As I wandered through the aisles, I found their variety of items impressive. I saw sauces I hadn't sen in other markets and they have a pretty impressive range of items other stores usually only have one or two of (such as their Blue Diamond Almond Milk or spreads such as coconut butter). The pricing is kind of all over the place however. Some items are okay (such as $1.99 for Greek Yogurt, not too far from the pricing I see in most Manhattan venues) but others are kind of insane like $6.99 for peanut butter from Peanut Butter & Co.which can be found for about $2-3 less elsewhere nearby. On this visit I picked up their pistachio baklava which was interesting. The dough is white to translucent stuffed with sweet pistachio. It was sweet, but the dough tasted barely baked, which gave it an interesting flavor but not better than regular baklava in my opinion. Check out was quick and the place was super well organized. I can see the appeal of the market, but it's prices are a bit high for my taste. read more

Let's face it. Every corner you turn there is another little corner store supermarket looking to distinguish itself from every other little corner market in NYC. This one, however, is ACTUALLY different. Step 1: It's bigger. More than just two or three aisles, they have managed to jam pack quite a few items into premium NY-style spaces. Step 2: The products. My goodness did they have some strange stuff in here. I was half asleep as I wandered through here, but there were grocery items that I've never seen before. I wouldn't even know what to do with this stuff, and it makes me want it all the more. Cooking adventure, anyone? It'll be like that TV show where they give the chefs Cheetos, gummy bears, and cream cheese and tell them to make a 5-star lunch. They did have at least one variety of every item that you were looking to buy at the store anyway, and quite a few items that have never been on any shopping list.... ever. I am happy that I can finally call it quits on the shitty corner markets and get a nice, fresh coldcuts, packed and stacked sandwich. Sandwiches here are truly the tits, their hot & cold food bar is dope as hell and only $6 after 8pm. You also get a free bottle of water with the purchase of a sandwich and prices are extremely reasonable for En Why Sea. Give that Octopus salad a try. Nothing says happy tummy like the feeling you get from gnawing down on those tentacles. I think it goes without saying that you should do all your grocery shopping here. I don't actually live in NYC. On a recent visit to New York we stayed just around the block from Amish Market. We felt right at home as this place seems like a Whole Foods, only in concentrated form. Not huge numbers of choices for each product, but solid options for each. The produce was good as was the meat selection. We did not try the hot food, but it smelled good and looks like folks were enjoying it. There is a seating area where you can eat and/or chill and there is wi-fi which is always a plus in my book. The only negative would that that, being from San Francisco, WE were even a little surprised at the cost. We ended up going to some of the other local bodegas and shop for other items that need not be hipster or organic. That said, in the area, it was a welcomed site and made our stay all the more comfortable. read more
