The 2 times I have tried to return an item with a receipt (both time small packs of frozen fruit that were bitter and inedible), the same store manager made things difficult . Today he was literally shaking his head back-and-forth as he finally processed a refund at my insistence after arguing that I should have come back within 24 hours (vs 48) and would only exchange, because the frozen fruit was open. A store that I'm sure would like to see itself as upscale and certainly has premium pricing shouldn't treat clients with suspicion and make life difficult for a client returning an inedible item, with a receipt, that they had on their own shelves. + 1 star for the selection of products, but the lack of an easy and guilt free return experience does not make me want to return in the future. read more

Let me preface by saying that generally speaking, I absolutely love this place, namely because of the products they stock, and I can't understate that. But I gave less than 5 stars because when I called them at 1140 (20 min before they close), the guy on the phone said they were closed, at which point I asked him what tine they closed. He then replied "12." I said it was 1140 and he said "ok thank you" and hung up. And mind you, all I was doing was trying to ask then if they carried certain products, but I guess even answering questions is too much work 20 min before closing. It's not their fault: HEALTH FOOD IS EXPENSIVE. So despite Westerly's prices being a bit higher than Whole Food (note: I'm not sure this is entirely true, but it feels that way. I almost never shop at Whole Foods anymore, so I honestly wouldn't know) I'll take this friendly neighborhood market of Whole Paycheck any day. Here's why: Buy Local. This is a one of a kind healthy supermarket and we need to support our local establishments before they are swallowed up by these mega corporations. #eattherich Selection, selection, selection! Westerly has a great selection fresh produce (check out the mushrooms on this place), assorted deli items for everyone from vegans to carnivores, a bulk section that I actually think is better than Whole Foods for its variety, and a huge selection of vitamins and beauty care products. If your a health nut (said with nothing but love) you'd be hard pressed to not find what your looking for here. Customer service. There's always someone lingering near to help you with whatever you need. Music. They play the BEST MUSIC. Sometimes I get stuck in there for an additional 30 minutes cuz I can't stop grooving to the soundtrack. Broadway star spottings. As a member of the Broadway community (yeah, I've been on a few stages) I can tell you that if you are a theatre nerd and you want a sighting, you're bound to have one here. Love Westerly's. Got some pretty good things here like their soups and matcha lemonade. Only thing I would beware if is asking for refunds, exchanges, and price adjustments. Based on their policy, I can tell they do not want to do that. If you want that service, go to Whole Foods. Westerly's is such a gem. The ready to eat soups are divine especially the beef stew. Can't say enough good things about them. Their signage can be a bit spotty though. I got shady vibes from them when I was reading their wordage regarding promotions. This place is great and a true gem in midtown. Not only do they have an amazing soup bar for cheap but you can find many types of specialty items all in one place. Admittedly some things are pricier here but not by much. Mostly the produce I would say. I come here for soup, vitamins, 1/2 sandwiches and other premade foods (made on premises), and most importantly: BULK ITEMS! They have so many grains, nuts, snacks, coffee, and so much more available in bulk. You can bring your own containers and pay per pound. There's a scale, and plastic bags if you don't bring any containers of your own. They also sell olive oils and vinegar in bulk as well, just buy one glass bottle, fill it up, and bring the bottle back for a super discounted price. It's a cheap, sustainable, and easy way to shop. This market is one of the few in the city carrying many products not found in other health markets. The staff is always very helpful going above & beyond to assist with obtaining products. They also carry their own brand of supplemental products have food bar with hot cooked food to go, soups, salads etc. They also offer home made meals, soups, salads & vegetable sides refrigerated & ready to eat. FASLE ADVERTISING AND HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been going to Westerly's and singing the praises of their services and products to friends and family for over 20 years, however the disrespect and incompetence is unforgivable. I was insulted, dismissed and if not for persistent articulation, was not going to get a refund. Management should be ashamed to treat customers this way. I was MOCKED, shamed and told I was rude, when really the ISSUE was false advertising and instead of apologizing and offering me a refund, they wanted to insult me and mock me in front of 15 employees (none who said anything) and 10 customers. I live across the street from Whole Foods in Harlem, but instead I go all the way downtown to support a local, small business. LOL not anymore. Why? When I can order organic food cheaper on vitacost.com or walk across the street to Whole Foods? Westerlys embarrased me and broke my heart. I've been taking my family and friends to Westerlys for 20 YEARS. I went to purchase Westerly's brand of purchase oregano oil. The sign says "2 for one, must buy two" I asked an attendant "If I only buy one would this be $16?" He said "yes". I saw bottles under the $31 and the $54 sizes. So I asked for clarity to ensure I was aware of exactly how much it would cost. I showed the Westerly's employee the size of the bottle. When I went got home, I noticed my groceries totaled $92.93 but when I added everything up - something was off. I didn't get a receipt but my items had stickers. I called the store that night and the response was "How do you know how much things are without a receipt." Which is condescending. I gave my name, number, and the transaction total. He said he would call in the morning -because office was closed. Around 2pm the next day they called - but I was working. I called back at 4pm - they said they needed more information - my credit card number. I asked why wasn't all this information collected when I initially contacted them. No response. And not exact on the charge despite me telling them based on banking statement. So I decided to take two buses and two trains after work to sort the issue. I called and told them all the info needed so I expected it to be ready when I arrived. With receipt in hand, management said I was not overcharged. He walked me over to the oregano oil, stating that if I don't buy 2, it's 20% off. But there is NO signage informing customers of that and also the $52 bottle was in the $31 section. I asked "should I be held responsible for vague advertising and employee misinformation"? He said he was not offering a refund of any kind. After I loudly but calmly stated that Westerly's has horrible customer service resulting in me being overcharged for over 5 minutes straight they finally relented - refunding me $15.99, however I am requesting an additional $11 since I was under the assumption the bottle was $31 and was charged for the $52 bottle. I also incurred paying taking transportation to clarify information that could have easily been handled on the phone. The staff dismissed me stating I've been a loyal customer for 20 years. "So, so, what does that mean?" They even stated "well, why don't you just buy the other bottle?" "Oh do you think we are stupid?" "You are rude!" It was humiliating. Two men berating me instead of taking responsibility. If I were a man they would not have talked to or treated me that way. It was RIDICULOUS. **The only reason why they gave me a refund was to shut me up, not based on error or principle.** But why??? How is that fair to people with a disability? To someone who lost their voice and comes to Westerlys for cough syrup? You have articulate demanding a refund for 5 minutes loudly before management shames you into "giving" you a refund????? SHAMEFUL Westerlys. Why would a grocery store competing with Whole Foods (and Amazon -the biggest company in the world) be this dismissive, rude and caustic to a LOYAL customer. Was it insecure, toxic men as management? Was it because I was a woman or because I'm Black? I highly doubt if I was a white woman or a man, that those TWO men would have talked to me in such a derisive way. Businesses are closing during the pandemic. Customer service should be efficient, prompt and courteous. Instead I had to take several trains and buses after work because management could not do their job. Those "managers" should be fired. I do diversity consulting for a living and two men berating a woman is NOT a good look. This supermarket has beautiful produce and a wide selection. Supermarkets in this city and Manhattan in particular often have wilting produce, tiny aisles, limited items, questionable meat, miserable employees, long lines, etc. This is a wonderful exception. There wasn't a single item I was not able to get from my shopping list due to either them not carrying it or it's poor quality - that's so rare! I got all I needed in one trip. There was so much there, including the widest selection of hummus I've ever seen, pate by Les Trois Petits Cochons, vegan and vegetarian options, a make your own trail mix section, fresh juice bar, soup station, sushi, so much tea, and bison tallow - cooking fat from bison. Damn. My only complaint is the meat section itself is really small and limited, and on the pricey side, but in a pinch it will do (I even saw a small cut of skirt steak). Just make sure you get there early or they will be out of the cut you want. The employees there are always so nice, I'm always asked 3-4 times if I need help when it's clear I'm searching for something. They also kept the lines organized and moving when things got crowded, and the cashiers are really friendly. read more

I'm a fan of this market, since I stop by almost everyday for something on my way to or from work. They have an awesome selection of everything, from groceries to prepared foods, to smoothies and cosmetics. I don't mind paying for quality food and products, but their prices are steep. A smoothie will cost you around $10 (which adds up over the course of a week), and if you're buying a lot of items it can add up too. I needed to get a couple things for banana bread I wanted to make... and it cost me around $45 dollars. I was surprised! They had tons of gluten and dairy free options including snacks, milk alternatives, yogurts, and more. They also had tons of supplements. It's prices are comparable to a Whole Foods. The store is much simpler and easier to get around too. If something's too expensive, just get something else. It usually has something on sale. This isn't a place to complete all my shopping. It supplements it. There's actually a few things cheaper than Whole Foods, and many other natural stores. A lot of savings in the prepared foods. They had a vegan chicken salad sandwich for about $7. It was very big and filling. The bulk food items are popular and competitively priced. It's helpful to look at their ads. There's a lot of stuff labeled "organic" and only a portion of that has the official USDA label (the USDA isn't even the gold standard for quality). There's a soup/salad/juice bar in back. One thing that I like about Westerly natural market is the fact that Westerly natural market has great foods for people who are in various stages of their diet and in my case, I am going to become a vegan for three major medical reasons, number one I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, number two I am currently battling stage 3B kidney disease and number three I have been suffering from gout arthritis for almost 10 years, which means I can no longer eat red meat such as steak, ground beef, lamb and pork. Certain types of seafood such as tuna mackerel bluefish whiting and tuna fish I have to limit, I no longer am able to consume alcohol such as beer or wine, not that I drink any of that but I can no longer drink that, and I have to limit my intake of certain foods that contain high fructose corn syrup to prevent any future gout flare-ups. So my reasons for choosing Westerly natural market is because I figured a health food supermarket such as this can help me reverse my type 2 diabetes, it can also help me reverse my kidney disease and also it can help prevent me from getting any more gout flare-ups depending on what I eat. And this supermarket can most certainly help me on those three health factors so I can remain healthy. And that is the reason why I have given Westerly natural market a five-star rating. read more

It's one of my go-to stores for select organic specialty products, but it is so high-priced overall that I think adding an exhorbitant bag fee on top of everthing else is pure gouging. I've been shopping at Westerly for the past 13 years as its right near where i live, and on many occasions the food was rancid when opened, especially the packed salads. a few weeks ago, three items were rancid, the coconut pieces, the tuna and a vegetable all at the same time. As a good customer you would think they would refund me, a good customer when I brought the items in, but they said it had to have been brought in before 24 hours of purchase. i will never shop there again, apparently they keep items beyond the expiration date also. read more

This is my all time favorite health and wellness centric store with pricing (despite its location) that makes health accessible to all and has super helpful, knowledgeable staff. In a time where Amazon is attempting to take over everything, I make a point to support great businesses like this one. I did recently have an wholly atypical bazaar experience (Sat Mar 6 around 6:15pm) where staff couldn't locate a key to open a manuka honey product display. After waiting more than 15 minutes for at least two separate store employees to try to locate the display's key, I then asked the manager if he could help. He told me he couldn't because (repeating what the other two store employees told me) there was only one key to the display in the entire store and it was last seen with another store employee that day but no one could currently find it (not that he made any effort himself). I left and purchased a $65 dollar manuka honey online based upon the exact product that I saw in this store but was unable to purchase. I have proudly shopped here for more than 8 years and unless Saturday's incident becomes a recurring experience (the world is currently upside down after all), I will continue to do so. read more

Great specialty store. It has a wide selection of products for any kind of health aware eater - gluten free, vegan, dairy free, casein free... You name it! The store has a big selection of products like breads and cookies, produce, pastas and even make up and supplements. It is like a much smaller version of Wholefoods with a wider selection in types of products and cheaper overall. My one critique of the store is that it was recently renovated and instead of expending out, more shelves were put in. The size of the place remained the same while the amount of products grew... As a results only very skinny people can move around the store with ease as long as they stay in a single file. I come here for the Wow Bakery Ginger Molasses Cookies. Also for some bulk snack items like granola, spirulina bars, sesame brittle, almond brittle, Berlin Bakery Spelt Sourdough Bread. They do have a good selection of specialty foods. Some items are cheaper than Whole Foods (Berlin Bakery frozen bread), and some things are more expensive (Spirulina Bars in bulk section). Their Spirulina Bars are more expensive per pound. $8.99/lb, compared to $6.79/lb at Whole Foods. But if you prefer more flavor options, come here. Whole Foods only has 1 type. Carob Spirulina. Westerly has Carob Spirulina, plus Lemon Pomegranate, Cha Cha Chia, Raw Goji Cocoa, Mixed Berry Blast, plus a few more varieties. They have 3 types of brittle. Or as they call it, Honey Crunch. 1. Peanut - peanuts, corn syrup, honey 2. Almond - almonds, sesame seeds, hulled sunflower seeds, corn syrup, cashews, honey, sugar 3. Sesame - sesame seeds, sugar, corn syrup, honey I tried the almond and sesame. Both are good and when broken up, would be great as cereal or frozen yogurt toppings. The Wow Bakery Cookies are expensive here. $5.99. Target has these for cheaper $, but they never have the Ginger Molasses flavor. So I have to get them here and pay more. read more

I'm a neighbor and supporter of this local business for over 27 years - but customer service has rapidly declined, just as fast as the prices have soared. Register person was rude, with a can't be bothered attitude. Forget a shopping bag - they'll gladly sell you one (understandable) for .25 to .50 cents - every other store charges 0.05 cents. Covid guidelines are followed, on the surface - but what's the point of "touch-less" payments you're touting at the registers, when you still have to touch the stylus/buttons and make selections to finalize a transaction. There are only a few reasons why I would ever step into Whole Foods sometimes, which includes the small occasions of my snobbery "organic" cravings. I cannot stand the fuckery that is waiting on the checkout line for more than 10 minutes and the disappointment of not having the item you specifically made the trip for in stock. It can be super hard to find my favorite Red Velvet Halo Top ice cream. An amazing Groupon deal led me to this magical place and I've hardly ever been to Whole Foods for my ice cream cravings since. First of all, I have never had to stand on line to check out--ever. Granted their selection is only a fraction of what WF offers and they are much smaller but I don't specifically seek out organic foods regularly, and I never needed 15 choices of the same item anyway. You are paying Manhattan prices but you'll be surprised to see that their prices are not insanely expensive--I actually find their prices fair and not too far of a difference when compared to your average Queens supermarket. The aisles are dense but thankfully, it is never crowded in here and getting in and out is extremely smooth. Their health section is humongous--there is every kind of vitamin and supplement you can think of and never heard of, protein powders, boosters, juices, etc. I love their fresh produce and dairy section--plenty of locally-sourced vegetables and an exciting selection of yogurt products that are local as well. They also have a lot of freshly made packed foods that sound delicious. And of course, their ice cream section is the best and always well stocked. There are no frills in this place and I think this is an absolute gem in the neighborhood; this would be my go-to place for groceries if only I didn't work and live far. read more
