This was my second time visiting Uncle Nearest, and it just confirmed why I gave them a 10. I…read morebrought my lady and her friends in from Cincinnati--one of them works for a distributor doing tastings--so we wanted them to get the full Uncle Nearest experience, especially since they don't get access to all the flavors back home. As always, everything was top tier. The staff was incredible, and Karen really stood out--she made the experience even more special. From the atmosphere to the tasting, Uncle Nearest never misses. Every visit feels like something you gotta share with people. That's why it's a 10 every time.

Upon arrival, the property itself was absolutely beautiful. The rich green colors, the open driveway, the art that could be visibly seen from the highway. Very gorgeous! The welcome center was clean and modern, displaying history of Nearest Green's lineage, facts about the art of distilling, display cases filled with tools from the original distillery/farm, as well as display cases for their world-renowned Tennessee Whiskey. The staff were all polite and welcoming. Our tour guide (forgot his name, but I have a picture of him!) was awesome! He was funny, personable, and very knowledgeable. He shared that he's been at NGD for the past 3 years and you could tell that he enjoys his job. The tour was great. The only downside was that half of the property was off-limits or non-operational at the moment. The time slot of our tour unfortunately occurred closer to closing time so we weren't able to check out their bar, Humble Baron. We did get to visit the speakeasy on the property and the area where they pour and bottle for the welcome center. It would've been fun to check out the stables to see all of the pretty horsies. Overall, it was a good experience. To visit a place filled with rich history, black history. Praying for the Nearest success for more opportunities to continue sharing the Green legacy.

My final work travel stop this week wrapped up with a mighty fine meal at Prohibition Rooftop Bar &…read moreGrill in Madison, Alabama. The restaurant sits just a stone's throw from the ballpark where the Rocket City Trash Pandas play, so the whole place already has a fun, lively atmosphere before you even sit down. Now given the name "Prohibition," I half expected someone to knock on the door and ask for a secret password like it was 1927. Back in those days, enjoying a drink required secrecy, dim lights, and maybe a jazz band playing in the corner. Today, things are a little easier... though for this non-drinker, my order was simple: water on the rocks, hold the lemon. I prefer my water about 100 proof for maximum flavor. My boss and coworker grabbed seats at the bar while we looked over the menu. We kicked things off with the Pork Belly Burnt Ends and the Pork Bao Buns. Let me tell you, those Pork Belly Burnt Ends were an absolute masterpiece. They came out crisp and seasoned just right with a little spicy kick. Served with raw carrots, homemade pickles, and lettuce wraps to bundle those little jewels together--downright tasty. If food had a Hall of Fame, these would already have a plaque on the wall. The Pork Bao Buns were good as well, but they simply couldn't match the grand slam the Pork Belly Burnt Ends delivered. For my main course, I ordered the Smoked Wangs with the Jala Mango seasoning and a side salad. The wings were delicious--cooked and seasoned to perfection. Every bite was solid. No bootlegging required. Prohibition definitely hit it out of the park today. Between the great food, the great service, and the fun atmosphere near the ballpark, this place is a must-stop for locals or anyone just passing through Madison. Our waitress tried pretty hard to convince us to order dessert, so I'm guessing their sweets are just as flavorful as everything else on the menu. The only problem I had today? I couldn't finish my meal. I was absolutely stuffed. If this had been the 1920s, the only crime committed here would've been leaving food on the plate. Great food. Great service. I'll gladly return--though next time I may need a little more room in the stomach.

Dodging yet another storm that rolled through when our group was here, we posted up in Nelson's Green Brier for an hour or so. I haven't struggled so much like I have here to pick a craft cocktail. There are so many good ones on the menu that fit any type of pallet, that it took me so long to decide. I got a modified old fashioned and then there was a martini-like drink that I tried. Both really packed a punch, luckily we were walking to our next destination. In the store they seemed to have a flash-sale going on for one of the bourbons. It was normally around $75 or something and I got it for $45. I am sure that's not normal but it really made the selection even better, because the wall of whiskey/bourbon is also really tough to choose what you want!
