Visited the famous Nearest Green Distillery with my husband for our mini-moon on Valentines Day. We visited via "Tennessee Whiskey Tours". Upon arrival, the property itself was absolutely beautiful. The rich green colors, the open driveway, the art that could be visibly seen from the highway. Very gorgeous! The welcome center was clean and modern, displaying history of Nearest Green's lineage, facts about the art of distilling, display cases filled with tools from the original distillery/farm, as well as display cases for their world-renowned Tennessee Whiskey. The staff were all polite and welcoming. Our tour guide (forgot his name, but I have a picture of him!) was awesome! He was funny, personable, and very knowledgeable. He shared that he's been at NGD for the past 3 years and you could tell that he enjoys his job. The tour was great. The only downside was that half of the property was off-limits or non-operational at the moment. The time slot of our tour unfortunately occurred closer to closing time so we weren't able to check out their bar, Humble Baron. We did get to visit the speakeasy on the property and the area where they pour and bottle for the welcome center. It would've been fun to check out the stables to see all of the pretty horsies. Overall, it was a good experience. To visit a place filled with rich history, black history. Praying for the Nearest success for more opportunities to continue sharing the Green legacy. read more

I was in town celebrating my birthday, and a visit to Nearest Green Distillery was at the very top of my list. Knowing even a portion of the history behind Uncle Nearest, I felt it was important to experience this place in person. After checking in at the front, I was placed in a group led by our guide, Xavier, and he truly made the tour exceptional. The tour itself was amazing, but what stood out most was the way Xavier spoke about the history. He shared the story of Uncle Nearest with such reverence and respect, not only for the man himself, but also for Tennessee whiskey, the distillation process, and the Uncle Nearest brand as a whole. One of the highlights of the tour was learning more about Uncle Nearest's origins and his invaluable contributions to Jack Daniel and Tennessee whiskey overall. The tour did a great job of dispelling long standing rumors of a rift between Uncle Nearest and Jack Daniel's, providing clear and thoughtful context that felt honest and well presented. I did the $35 tour, which lasted about an hour and a half and included a tasting of five different Uncle Nearest expressions. Xavier was patient throughout the tasting, knowledgeable, and it was very clear that he genuinely loves what he does. He created a welcoming environment and encouraged questions without ever making the experience feel rushed. After the tour, I visited the gift shop, which was very reasonably priced and offered a wide range of merchandise and bottles. While on the property, I also stopped by Humble Baron, the bar on site, which I will be reviewing separately. Overall, this was an excellent experience and a meaningful way to spend part of my birthday trip. The tour, the history, and the care put into telling Uncle Nearest's story made this visit well worth it. I've been quite a few times already and have some good times with friends and neighbors. The drinks are very good, the bartenders are nice and consistent with their drinks. It's a pretty everyday calm place to go have fun, get dressed up and enjoy live music and karaoke. I haven't been disappointed with this place nor the stuff they serve but having only one bathroom in the longest bar seems like a poor design or an afterthought. To get to the bathroom feels like walking half a mile from the far side. As someone who loves heels and drinks- this is not ideal. I recently joined their Fifty Six Society and they rolled out the red carpet. I even got to meet Nearest's great great granddaughter and master blender, Victoria Eady Butler! Tennessee is my second home. As a native from California, I have found that the history and culture of Tennessee fascinates me. The bestie, her family, and I participated in a tour at the Nearest Green Distillery. I'm an avid whiskey drinker so when the bestie recommended it, I was all in! I heard "stories" of the Uncle Nearest whiskey and of course stories get twisted and the result creates narratives that were never true. Our tour guide Julie was fantastic in sharing the history and story of the farm and family. Entering the speak easy made me feel like I walked into a time warp. I felt the spirit of the women who fought for women's rights and equality and the strength of the ancestors who came before us, forging a strong foundation for future generations. It took everything in me to not cry. Touring the grounds, taking in the scenery, smiling at the workers and sipping on four flavors of whiskey was truly memorable. The customer service that we received from everyone was incredible. We got to go on the tour and it was by far the best experience we had while on the whiskey trail. So, this is not a distillery. There is no actual whiskey production here, yet the price for a tour rivals nearby distilleries that DO produce whiskey. The grounds were beautiful, they are on a horse farm, but that is about the most enjoyable thing. The tour is a lot about the new creation of the grounds, and the hopes for the future. Was honestly a huge disappointment. The actual creation of Nearest Green Whiskey happens over 20 miles away (according to our tour guide). The Nearest Green story is a great one, however the tour only speaks about him in a video at the beginning of the tour. My dad and I share a love of bourbon, so we took a Spring Break Daddy-Daughter Trip to Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, TN. The sense of Black Pride I felt while on the grounds was indescribable. Fawn Weaver has done an immaculate job of preserving the historical aspect (content, buildings, etc.) while expanding the grounds and the overall Uncle Nearest brand. Karen was our tour guide, and she provided the most amazing tour I have ever experienced. She's only worked there for a little less than 1 year, but still managed to have a wealth of knowledge to share with us. Her family is originally from the area, so she interspersed lived experiences with the history of the brand, grounds, and the story of how Uncle Nearest came to be one of the most dominant brands in the history of American spirits. Everything she shared enhanced the tour, and it didn't help that she did it all with the thickest Southern drawl anyone has ever heard LOL. I simply cannot say enough good things about the experience Karen provided for us. You expect employees to speak well of their employers, but it was a treat to hear the way Karen celebrated Fawn (the CEO) and Victoria Eady Butler (the Master Blender). It was beautiful and made me proud to be a Black woman. One of the things I really appreciated is Karen started the tour by telling us not to take any videos to preserve the sacredness of the tour for future visitors. We were allowed to take tons of pictures, but they do ask that video footage isn't shared to ensure everyone can have the experience of a lifetime - just like my dad and I did. We toured the warehouse with all the barrels and even got to see some of the workers bottling a special batch. We even saw the labels being affixed to the bottles by hand! The toured ended with the highly-anticipated tasting in their super-stylish tasting room in a converted stable that was previously used to cool down the horses (you know - 1 of those round rooms where horses walk around in a circle underneath blowing fans). We sampled Nearest Green, Uncle Nearest 1884, Uncle Nearest 1856, and Uncle Nearest Master Blend Edition. Dad and I left with a bottle of the 1856 and the Master Blend Edition. And guess who rang us up in the gift shop after the tour? Yep, Karen! She does it all, and with so much grace and hospitality. The gift shop had a package with 6 bottles for $625, and we totally would have opted for it had we been driving instead of flying, or if we had larger luggage. A group of ladies and I chartered a bus from the Atlanta area to tour Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, TN last weekend. The property is beautiful, the tour guides are knowledgeable, the "Speakeasy" room, with accompanied video was most interesting and narrated by Uncle Nearest Green grandson. The tasting room was indeed a treat for all tourists. Several of us could polish off the whiskey choices, while many of us left some beverage in our shot glasses. However, everyone walked out standing up straight. There was an opportunity to purchased Uncle Nearest whiskey to take home, while taking pictures and shopping for other souvenirs. We had lunch at the on-site barbecue restaurant that had some of the best bread pudding ever! I was only upset with myself that I only purchased one! read more

Boy oh, oh boy!! A time was had. The Rhymth & Whiskey Tour, hosted by the National Museum of African American Music, was, as the youngins say today, "chef's kiss!" The NGD team, property, food & tasting did not disappoint. The vastness of the property was awe-inspiringly, miles long manicured rich green lawn, well-structured buildings that house the operations & brain-trust of the NGD empire felt like a privilege to see & feel. Our Tour guide, Tyler, was dangone funny but didn't play about TN's drinking rules. Although the weather was sweltering after 4 p.m., and our group was his last tour for the day, his enthusiastic demeanor had you hanging on every bit of what he shared. The only setback was that Humble Barron was closed for a private event. But a sad face didn't last long, because Barrel House II BBQ hit the spot for a quick bite. Baby! Every year I throw a Father's Day Link Up, and this year I chose Uncle Nearest for our time together. From first contact until the end, Uncle Nearest staff was absolutely AMAZING!!! Started with Ashley from the Welcome Center being patient with me through out the months to get everything set up (even after multiple changes in attendees), and also making sure we were set for the best tasting experience. Then we arrived yesterday (Saturday 06/14), and her [Ashley] plus the rest of the Welcome Team were super inviting, funny, and just made us feel like we were home. From there, I mean he was our tour guy, but he moved and treated us like family, so my brother, Xavier, took us through a very thorough, historical, tour of Nearest Green. The things I learned are things that I will hold on to for the rest of my life. Xavier made sure no one was left out, answered all our asinine questions, and provided comical anecdotes throughout the tour. NOTE: The Single Barrel Thieving Experience is worth is price and I suggest everyone try that when you come here. Lastly, we dined at Humble Baron (Home of the World Record, Longest Bar), and let me tell you, the layout from seeing the Longest Bar, the entertainment (whether it was live music or a playlist), the staff (all courteous, helpful, and just overall epitomes of customer service), and the food exceeded expectations. I had the Hickory Smoked Chicken Wings...*CHEF'S KISS* I woke up thinking about them thangs! Also, the Humble Baron Old Fashioned is by far top 3 Old Fashioned I have had in the state of Tennessee. I would be remiss not to shout-out the servers/bartenders that waited on us. Handling 16 ppl with such grace and ease. The grounds were exquisitely manicured, plenty of areas for photo ops, both outdoors and indoors. Terrel was very knowledgeable and charismatic. I loved the tour and the history lessons provided. The staff that we encountered were very friendly and kind. The restaurants on site were delicious with large portions. The food came out very quickly and we were checked on often, which we appreciated. The only downside was that we had to sit at the bar instead of a table. It was very uncomfortable because of my back issues but luckily the service was fast. Our favorites dishes were the catfish that was perfect. Great flavor and crispy on the outside moist and flaky in the inside. The brisket sandwich was like a party on our tongues. Soo many great flavors from the moist brisket, the hickory sweet BBQ sauce, the pickles and onion rings. The side of fries were crunchy and seasoned. The not soon great item was the wings. They were smoked very well but lacked any significant flavor compared to everything else. The atmosphere is great and would work for any occasion.
