Godfrey Brothers is a superb local butcher. The service is always great with friendly knowledgeable staff who will recommend the best cut for the meal you want to make if you ask. Quality of their meats is far superior than the grocery store. They also carry gulf shrimp and their sourdough bread partner just started providing sliced loaves of bread. read more

I've never been to Godfrey. My wife is often in the area and stops in. I'm always pleased with what she purchases. She's not much of a cook or even a steak lover. Last time she even stopped by and asked the butcher, "my husband wants...". The customer service is tops. The meat and cuts are hard to top. read more

Can't say enough about this butcher shop. They have been great during these crazy times of Covid. They are quick to get your orders together and take phone calls so that your order is ready when you get there they have a wonderful selection of meats. This was the location that provided the twenty something pound turkey for Thanksgiving this year. I was staying with some of my best friends in Jacobus and this place is right down the road. They provided a turkey, which was massive, but you can tell that this place is old school. The kind of butcher shop, and I know they are much more so please take that as the compliment it was intended to be, that your parents went to. I dreamed of a place like this where I could shop and have fresh, tasty, quality food close by. For me I will live vicariously through my friends that lives right down the road. "The Good" - The selection is great as it is with cases of meat.... beautiful, beautiful meat. The case on the far right even has cheese. - In addition to the giant Fred Flintstone sized Turkey that tipped the car over. The ham steak that provided the Thanksgiving day breakfast was pretty fantastic too. - To quote my (now) local friend that lives there... the meat is fresh. How fresh??? There is livestock in the field across the street. "The Meh" - I am originally from a beach town in Jersey so I can relate to how locals treat locals and how they treat people that are "new"... Its not that they do not know how awesome you are, its most likely the first time they have seen you in a place where people have been coming to for years... So crack a joke make the ladies behind the counter smile and all will be well with the world. Great meats and over the top service! I showed up here at 4:50 on a Saturday when the close at 5:00pm. (Yes, I was that guy.) The team they had behind the counter was extreme helpful and made sure I was taken care of. I also had them cut a smoked dog bone up for me and again, they accommodated my needs even know I'm sure they all were ready to go home for the day. Very disappointed. Customer Service person was abrupt and unfriendly. Fresh meats were jammed together at the end of the display case, unattractively piled one on top of one another. I asked for center cut pork chops (none cut & on a tray). She reached under another pile of meat, cut them, wrapped them and I never saw what I was buying. I asked for 2 filet steaks. She grabbed two. It turns the one steak broke in two so 2 steaks were in 3 pieces. If I'm paying $27.99/ lb, they should be at least whole. I asked for a chuck roast. Only one on display. She slammed it on the scale, wrapped it, rang everything up and I was out the door. Never again. Seachrist in Dallastown is the best. Meats are attractively displayed. Definitely the best place to get meat in York county. They're incredibly busy given their location, but they're also incredibly fast. I've never waited long in line. I spent a whole day calling the bigger grocery stores in York trying to find someone who carried Ham hocks so I could make our traditional ham and green beans, and I couldn't find anyone who carried it. I finally decided to call Godfrey Bros. and they had them! I would give them a 5 star rating except I think there could be improvements in the customer service area. None of the employees were ever rude or mean, but some of them come off just a bit antisocial. Yeah, I know... It's a butcher in York county - you don't really expect to be pampered, but a little less meat and a little more sweet couldn't hurt. read more

now that I'm back in northern California and am paying $$$ for best grassfed sustainably raised artisan small farm local etc. etc. meat, all I know is once in a while, I would get something as good as what I used to get from Godfre's Bros for the 3 years I was in York - except their prices were a fraction of what I'm now paying. Their beef are simply the best. I have tried other butchers' in the area, Godfrey's was still my #1 source for beef. All the friends and family who visited me out in York used to say the same thing. The raw(frozen) marrow bones that they sometimes call "dog bones" and sell for dirt cheap, that stuffs make the best beef stock. I used to buy from them at the New Eastern Market in East York on Friday, which was much more convenient for me than going out to their main store. Their sweet snacks (beef-jerky like sticks) are also great. My husband asks about those things every now and then, I wish I can order online. I miss Godfrey Bros ! read more
