If in Fairbanks, make a worthwhile visit to Gold Dredge 8. History on display, placer gold mining in action. Historical discussion of Fairbanks and its gold mining background is given prior to visiting the dredge and museum. A detail description is also given on the Alaskan Pipeline which runs through the property. A train ride through past dredgings to the current drudge's location with many references to Fairbanks' current mining operations. A demonstration of panning gold is given prior to visitors finding their own gold. Staff will weigh your findings and tell you how many grams found and today's prices. You can have the staff make jewelry and other things out of your poke or just take hit home. Fun and educational for all ages.

Step back in time to the days of the Alaskan gold rush on this tour. It started off with a short open train ride to one of the dredging machines. On the way, the guides gave us a demonstration on the finer points of panning for gold. They actually got some in their pans. Our stop was at the dredger. There, we had our chance to be real life prospectors as we panned for gold of our own. This part was actually fun. We were all given a small bag of dirt guaranteed to contain flecks of gold. It wasn't much to make you a millionaire, but it was fun to get and put into a keepsake. And if you've been hit by good fever, they had pans and bags you could buy. After a little bit of time to walk around, it was back on the train to head to the bus.

Part of my Princess Cruise land package. I enjoyed seeing the Alaska pipeline on our way to the Gold Dredge. As with most things the pipeline was just a bit more complicated than I would have ever thought. It was interesting to see the wildlife around the pipeline kind of opposite of what many are lead to believe about it's destruction of the wildlife. The Gold Dredge was a fun tour with a lot of interesting tidbits of history and of course why we don't mine for gold anymore. After arriving we took a train ride to pan for gold. They hand you a bag of dirt and teach you how to pan. I looked at the panning and thought god I don't have the patience to do this but I did take my bag of dirt. Mrs. K. was able to turn our bags of dirt into $30 worth of gold. Cool huh? I always new she was a gold digger. :). For a touristy place owned by the same people who own the riverboat cruise I want to end with this. If they were out to take your last tourist dime they had many opportunities to do it. But they did not. Example can of coke. On many tours I have payed from $1.00 to $5.00 depending on greed. Gold dredge charged me .50 cents. I went over to get ice a cream cone. Surely they will charge the heck out of a cone. Nope double scoop for $2.00.

Another tour that was our land tour package with Princess Cruises and again, we enjoyed ourselves and had fun panning for gold! After we did the Riverboat Discovery tour, our shuttle bus took us to Gold Dredge No. 8 that is located in Fox, Alaska (about a 20 minute drive outside of Fairbanks). Highlights of the Tour: -Learning about the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and view the inside of the pipe and the inside mechanics) -Short train ride to the dredging station, which along the way, a commentator will give a history of gold mining in Fairbanks. There will also be different historical characters along the route reenacting of panning for gold. At the dredging site, one of the former employees will share about the boat and the process -At the panning station, you'll be given your own bag and pan to pan for gold (Plus: The water is heated, so you won't freeze your fingers) -Free hot chocolate or coffee and freshly baked cookies -Browse and view historic artifacts that is located in the huge gift shop -Friendly, knowledgeable staff Recommend: Absolutely-it's very family friendly and it's for all ages

So I used to be a tour guide here in the early 1990s and I have to say that the new ownership has really developed a fabulous experience learning about gold mining in the Fairbanks area. Great tour guides. Great help with the gold panning. Even the gift store was a nice surprise (including weighing your gold so you know how much $$ you found in your gold pan). As a bonus the Alyssa pipeline runs thru the property and you get to learn quite a lot about that! I highly recommend this tour if you're in/visiting Fairbanks.

We had a great time at the Gold Dredge. This was very informative and fun. We loved the music before the trip and the narration provided during the show. You get an Aleyeska Pipeline presentation, short train ride, learn about the gold mining in Fairbanks, pan for gold and visit a cool gift shop. Loved it. Would do it again.

Hey It was better than I expected! Enjoyed learning about the pipeline, and the dredge was a blast from the past, that you wouldn't normally ever imaging. What a piece of historic machinery! Yes its touristy, but the wife and I enjoyed it! Doesn't take a lot of time!

Alaska pipeline, nearby is a display about pipeline pigs.

The people are exceptionally nice and friendly. The site is set up to handle large groups well, even those with movement difficulties, and everyone who wants it can get personal help while doing the gold panning activity. It was pretty interesting from start to finish. There is a big gift store at the end. You ride to and from the event in a narrow guage train, and learn about both the Alaska pipeline and the history of gold mining, and particularly the gold mining dredge, in this activity. There is a mini museum alongside the gist shop of you'd rather learn more than shop. The gift shop prices were responsible considering you're in Alaska...

Hoping to pay for the trip to Alaska -LOL!

Educational, interesting , and fun. This was part of our tour so we didn't really choose this option, but we did enjoy ourselves. Everything was we well organized. The little train was enjoyable while we heard the history of gold mining in the ara. We had a chance to pan for gold. If you follow the instruction provided you will find gold. If you don't follow instruction they help you anyway-LOL! They have a great gift shop and a very friedly & informative staff. Just as an aside- this is located along the Alaska Pipeline and provides a great opportunity for some up close photos.

Great tour! Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Fairbanks! Very organized and well run, the gold panning was really fun and the gold we panned was put into a keepsake pendant. Train ride was fun as well. The guides were well informed and hi energy to assist and really made our experience great. They Discussed a lot of things about Alaska -the gold mining industry, pipeline etc. etc. very informative and interesting as well as entertaining all at the same time. I'm not a big tourist, but if you're going to be in your fairbanks you really need to go on this tour!

We met Ronn & Marketa for the night tour at an accessible & central meeting spot in Fairbanks, as we were staying ~20 min away. Ronn drove the comfortable van while Marketa analyzed satellite data for cloud coverage and predicted the best places to see the aurora. We saw brilliant aurora from the moment we arrived in our spot for the night! I brought my own DSLR and my partner rented a camera; we loved the guidance on how to photograph the sky. Marketa also took stunning portraits of us. From the get-go, their communication was outstanding. The Aurora Chasers website fully prepared us for what to buy/wear to stay warm in -40 to -20F weather. If you're interested in seeing the Northern Lights, I highly recommend taking a tour. My partner and I were not equipped to drive on icy, snowy roads late at night and to navigate weather data on our own - Ronn & Marketa made it possible for us to experience clear skies and thus vivid, magical aurora during our trip to Fairbanks.

Having a little bit of DSLR experience, I needed a tour company that didn't just drop me off into a warm hut with hot chocolate, but someone with photography expertise to help me operate in the raw elements of Alaska. I did my research with ALL the local Aurora companies. The Aurora Chasers are the only ones with professional educational videos of Aurora photography on YouTube, have an Aurora cam on their own very easy to navigate informative website. You can also rent cameras and tripods in advance from them. While on the way to a remote area with a beautiful private view to catch the Aurora, they educated us on everything about the Aurora. They played videos on a big screen inside the tour bus, which they produced themselves. They provided us information about the Aurora, and very specific instructions adjusting settings on your specific DSLR and cell phone. They have thorough knowledge of canon, sony, and nikon, and cell phone settings, and I'm almost positive they could figure out any other branded cameras. It blew my mind and excited the inner tech nerd in me. I really liked how although they gave us the freedom to shoot as we chose, they always checked up on us if we needed any help with our camera settings, and even provided hot chocolate. There were various people shooting that night spread out on different locations and they managed to get to every single one of us to make sure we were happy and comfortable. Marketa took amazingly beautiful portraits of my wife and I with the Aurora in the background! She got deep in the snow just to get the right angle! Thank you Ron and Marketa!!! You made this our favorite vacation!!!

Being able to have contact with such a majestical creature was so cool. They let you feed them as well. This definitely isn't one of those experiences where they are just trying to get you in and out. We didn't feel rushed whatsoever, and had such a great time. A heads up for any tourists out there like me. If you come closer to winter or in the break up season, there is a lot of hardened snow and ice on the roads. I would definitely recommend getting a rental car that has four-wheel-drive. It was my first time ever driving on snow/ice like that. It wasn't too scary. Other than a couple moments when I had to stop and turn around. I could definitely see myself getting stuck if I didn't have a car that had four-wheel-drive. So just be mindful of that. Overall, it was a really beautiful drive though. And if you're going in the summer, you shouldn't have any problem on the roads. You could always call ahead and ask the staff with the road conditions are ahead of booking. But you definitely need to book this! There is also a really cool building where you meet your instructor that has a really beautiful view. There are also a couple of walking trails nearby that you can go down. And there is a coffee shop inside that had a decent latte. I believe they also serve food, though we didn't end up ordering anything, I did see other people eating. When we were trying to find our way there, we did get a little bit lost. But there is signage on the road on the left-hand side if you're heading north. They are part of a larger event booking. You'll see something on the right hand side that looks like a bunch of viewing domes. Then right after that the turn is on the left.

Our guide was fun to talk t, a nice guy who has been training and running sled dogs for years and had great stories. Checking in: When you arrive, you check in at a little house at the bottom of the long driveway downhill and then head over to the sled waiting area. Meeting the Dogs: While you wait your turn, you can pet and play with the dogs. It's a little bit sad at first because each dog is chained to a stake near their individual dog house. Some of them were really tired and just wanted to be left alone, but others were super friendly and eager to make friends. The Ride: When it's your turn, you just pop right into the sled and off you go! A quick heads-up: make sure you get completely comfortable before you take off, because there is no stopping to re-adjust once you start. Also, keep in mind the seating arrangement means the person in front is essentially laying back on the person in the back. While it was a fun bucket-list experience, it's probably a one-and-done activity that I wouldn't necessarily feel the need to do again. Pro tip: Warning (The Hill): To get to the rides, you drive down a long, snow-covered driveway hill, roughly 150 yards. As I was driving down, I couldn't help but wonder if my car would be able to get back up. Sure enough, afterwards, my SUV rental could not make it up the slope and kept sliding backward. Even though I was driving an All-Wheel Drive SUV, it only had standard tires instead of proper snow tires, which caused me a ton of grief and ultimately required a tow up the hill by AAA. (If you're curious, I rented the vehicle from Budget at the airport, you can read my separate review about that nightmare!). It's a fun, authentic Alaskan adventure. Instead of pushing forward anyway, they upgraded us to their Yurt experience, which was the perfect solution. We could stay warm inside and step outside only when the aurora appeared, warming up in between with hot chocolate, coffee, and soup. One unexpected bonus was that the yurt next to us was offering dog sled rides, so we got to see a dog sled team up close, and that was also an option we could have added. It was a really fun and unique part of the experience. Our driver and guide, Zach, was fantastic. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very accommodating, and shared great insights about the aurora, Alaska's history, and geography. He was also very honest when he did not know something and tried to find the answer. The next night at the hot springs, we ran into Paul, another guide from 1st Alaska Tours who was leading a different group. He was just as friendly and helpful and offered some great tips, which really says a lot about the company. If you are considering an aurora tour in Fairbanks, 1st Alaska Tours is a great choice. I do apologize for my photography skills and the video was from inside the yurt!

When we arrived at about 10:30, the Lights were in primitive, foggy form but they steadily got better as time passed, ebbing and flowing in intensity, stretching all the way across the sky at times, in a mesmerizing dance of green and purple. We were fortunate, because the aurora forecast was "excellent" (KP 5-6) for the night we went out, something I'd never encountered before in trips to Iceland or Alaska. Our group of 12 had access to its own warm, roomy, window-encircled yurt, much appreciated due to unusually high winds much of the night. An added treat was the appearance of several dog-mushing teams, coursing across the expanse in front of us. I can't wait to do the exact same trip again next year, but I almost didn't make this one. Although the tour was fully booked when I called 1st Alaska on the day of the trip, they were kind enough to call me back when they received a cancellation, for which I will always be grateful.
