The Gold King Mine was only a mile outside of Jerome. A friendly white and orange cat greets you at the door as you enter through the gift shop. For just $5 you get to walk around the "Ghost Town". It was fun to see all of the old cars, and other antiques including a terrifying view of ancient dental tools, old washing machines, a garage with a collection of chainsaws, a view of the entrance to an old mine, and cute goats and chickens. It reminded me of my grandparents old barn full of rusting treasures and old wood. read more

Visited the ghost town with a friend over the weekend and enjoyed the visit. I wasn't sure what to expect and was a little surprised there weren't more interactive activities. We just had a terrible experience. We paid 140 to get in and then waited at the gold panning for 15 mins for a guide. Since no one arrived we decided to pan ourselves. My son was having a blast then the worker arrived and was so rude. She embarrassed my 11 and 14 year old. The front did the right thing and refunded the 2 kids but the entire area is not worth the fee. I do not recommend! read more

Ok here's the thing: this place is horribly misnamed. It's not particularly a mine nor a ghost town. Here's what it actually is: 60% junkyard for 1970s and prior autos and trucks 15% loose random tools and motors - it's a hoarder's paradise for men 10% 4-5 exhibits, tiny cabins, that show things from long ago, like how laundry was done. The ceiling is literally falling in on one of them. This part could be cool, is museum-ish, but not well labeled and dirty and in disrepair. 10% there are about 10 nice collector vehicles in good condition open garages 5% various farmyard animals, mostly in pens (chickens loose) 2% a mine shaft 10' behind a fence, and a short dead end mine tunnel So if you enjoy looking at a wide variety of old cars and machinery in poor condition, or a limited number of nice cars/trucks, this place may truly be interesting to you. If however you want to show your children what a ghost town and/or mine is like during a day trip from Sedona, they (and you) will be very disappointed. read more

If you planning a trip to Flagstaff or the Grand Canyon and coming from Phoenix, this is a "must do" activity for families on your way. It will add roughly 1 additional hour of driving time and plan for 90 minutes to see this museum. Before coming, check out the Wiki page on the town of Jerome, which highlights the interesting mining history of the area, dating back to the early 1900s. You'll be driving right through the center of this mountain side town and are sure to be amazed by the geology, random stores and buildings, and views of the Arizona plains. Anyway, King Gold is probably a bit misnamed, but nonetheless interesting. It's located on a former copper and gold mine. Throughout the property, there are dozens of old (preserved) mine town buildings, shops, and work areas. Additionally, the property is scattered with all kinds of mine equipment including giant drill bits, cranes, elevators, tools, etc. The owner of the property (now deceased) was also the ultimate collector of vehicles. It's almost like a boneyard for transportation history. Whether it be a school bus from the 1950s, race cars, or work trucks, you'll see hundreds of abandoned vehicles. Quite an interesting experience. This place, along with the drive up the mountain, gets 10 out of 10 stars in my book. read more

Super cool place. We made a stop in Jerome, AZ today and walked around the strange little town. When we were leaving the parking lot we noticed a sign advertising the ghost town/gold mine and we almost dismissed it but then we thought "hey, we're here...why not?" We're so glad we did!! There's a little shop with most of the same junk every other shop has...gems, scorpion paper weights, etc and at the back of the shop is a door to the ghost town/gold mine and it cost us $5 each to go in. Best $5 I've spent in a long time. THAT PLACE WAS SO COOL!!! Honestly, had I known what was behind that door I would probably be okay paying $15 each. I'm a bit of a gear head...I like American Pickers...I like salvaged materials and old cars...so maybe it's more interesting to me, but when you stop and really take in all that is there, I think most everybody can appreciate what's going on there. What a weird place! This is basically a little history, a little active wood-working facility, a little petting zoo, and a whole lot of photo opportunities. For $5.25 you can enter through the gift shop, and spend as much time as you'd like. There are stores and businesses set up as they once were - like a dentist, a shoe repair store, a dry goods store, etc. There are a LOT of old cars decaying and becoming part of the land again, most which are adorned with a plaque explaining what they are and where they came from. You are free to go around and explore as you wish. Right in the middle of the area is a log-planing machine which creates crowds of "OHHHS" and "AWWWS". Make sure to get a $0.50 bag of feed in the gift store before you enter because the animals herein will be your best friend. There are a few goats, a bunch of chickens, a rabbit, and a mule. The mule (see pic) has a trick; If you stand on the left and say "gimme a kiss" he will actually MOUTH YOUR FACE and then expect to be fed. So of course I had to do that. A few times. There are tons of old-timey things hanging around. A lot of things to point at. And even more to wonder about. This is the perfect place to bring your grandfather or your own father, because there are plenty of machines of yore with a huge male-fan base to be gawked at and remembered. It's also good for kids because of the animals and the wood machine in use. Might want to make sure tetnus shots are up to date though, as there's a lot of rust around. I don't know about the "ghost town" part of tihs place. The only scary part about this place was the threat of being stuck out here over night. read more

This is definitely not for everyone! The town of Jerome is called a "ghost town", but the streets are lined with shops, restaurants and bars - not exactly abandoned. The views are great from the top and it is a nice drive up the winding road to town. When you take the turn and drive through the narrow gravel road, you'd think you made the wrong turn somewhere. Once you get to the old mine, you are greeted with a collection of old trucks, cars, motorcycles, buildings, equipment and machinery. You enter through the gift shop for the tour. The shop carries souvenirs, jewelry and lots of quirky items. The family who runs the business live on the property and are descendants of the founder Don Robertson. Like I said, this may not be for everyone, but if you are into photography, this is a must stop! read more

This place is awesome! I was so shocked at the negative reviews for this place? Its not really a ghost town it's a collection of eclectic items and old cars. I was the one that added most of the photos and as an amateur photographer (VERY amateur more a hobby really) I found the place to be really cool. I cant imagine a kid not wanting to go here? It was only my husband and myself however, i only wished we had found this place the first time we came to Jerome with my little nephews. They would have loved it. There are all these cool old "town homes". Plus it is only $5 what do you have to loose? If you don't like old/rustic things, this place isn't for you. Tip, the old guy that owns the place buys these cars from all over the US, they aren't from Jerome like all those 1-stars seemed to think? Plus he has a shed with some really cool woodworking going on, ask for a tour of that . .. there are huge wood tables being made that must go for hundreds of dollars in those fancy art stores. read more

What an awesome place off the beaten path. Found out the original owner had passed and the family is in the process of restoring and cleaning up to better utilize the vintage items and land. It was a city in and of itself! Fully functioning and profitable back in the day! The history of this place is incredible. These people worked hard and partied harder. We almost didn't go based on the bad reviews but I'm so glad we didn't listen to them! If you're even remotely into antiques or kitschy / fun roadside attractions then this is a must do. The "ghost town" features a jail, schoolhouse and dentist office among other quintessential small town facilities, each stocked with corresponding antique relics. Other reviews refer to this as a "hoarding junkyard" but it was made evident to me that the person who made this place put a lot of thought and detail into each area. For $1 extra you get a little bag of food to feed to the pygmy goats, sheep, and chickens. We lucked out when their lovely owner asked if we wanted to go in the gate with her to feed them their favorite treat (animal crackers) and take photos. She told us about each goat and sheep and their hilarious personalities. They were adorable and we had a blast. My advice is to go in without expectations and just enjoy the unique collection and experience. Its not a history museum (there are plenty of free historic museums and landmarks in town for that) but rather someone's take on keeping the spirit (no pun intended) of Jerome's past alive in a fun and light-hearted way. Not sure why so many people on here are expecting this place to be Disney World when it has "ghost town" in the name and costs $5 to get in. P.S. Beware of rattlesnakes when visiting!! There are signs everywhere indicating this but we heard several of them while wandering around, so be very careful and aware while exploring. read more

It was ok. 4 people for 42.50. I felt it was pricey. I paid 10$ each person to visit Montezuma castle, Montezuma wells and Tuzigoot all three national monuments. I felt underwhelmed and overwhelmed at Jerome's ghost town. Lots of old stuff there but not necessarily related to jerome's ghost time. Sad to see some of the old building still there but not restored. N that all this other stuff is just taking away from the ghost town. An insect-infested waste of time and money. This isn't a ghost town-- it's a junk yard where some hoarder has figured out a way to actually make people pay to see his rusting piles of crap. Jerome used to be a booming mining town until about 1935, at which point it was tapped out and several large fires had gutted the town's buildings. This "ghost town" is supposedly leftover from that era, but it's really just a massive pile of rusting junk and old cars. What really killed me about this place was that much of the rusting equipment and old cars were from decades AFTER the mines closed and the town became mostly derelict. There were trucks from the late 60s, a Keno machine from at least the 70s, various automobiles from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Some of the "old" signs were clearly written with a black Sharpie. Plus for some reason there are flea-bitten animals located on-site that not only look miserable, but stink to high heaven. It's not a ghost town, it's something that should be nuked from orbit. My wife and I walked around for about 10 minutes before we couldn't stand the horse flies, the smell, and the stupid rusting piles of crap anymore. And for those of you with kids, this is a great place for your kid to hurt themselves with the various jagged metal items and rotted wood stairs that are located throughout the yard. read more

I have come to this place on and off since 1982 and the gentleman that we meet back then has past away and his family is still running the place with all the quirkiness I remember every time I have visited. they have not claimed the ownership of there yelp page so I know they don't read the review because they just don't care. Gold King Mine has an eclectic collection of old mining equipment, and old trucks like none that I have ever seen before! The owner for the last 28 years, Don Robertson, is very personable. Don is amazing, in that he is self-taught person, who has accomplished some very impressive engineering & architectural feats. Don personally showed a few of his current projects, and he was more than willing to give us some background details on the history of the items around the place. Don also let us photograph the vehicles as much as we liked. He even showed us the old saw mill in operation, powered by a hit-and-miss engine! It is well worth the low admission of $5 to see this collection of antiques, if you are a collector, a tinkerer, an engineer, photographer, historian, or anyone who appreciates the days when we did things the mechanical way (and the days when we made things in America). read more

This place is chocked full of history! Gold King Mine & Ghost Town is a shot back in time for any one interested in old trucks and antique machinery. At first the place may appear a bit like an abandoned junk yard, with old buildings and a boarded up mine. Upon a closer look you will discover the richness of this ghost town. We found Don, the owner at the saw mill. He certainly looks like a miner of a time gone by. Very knowledgeable and welcoming. The drive up to the mine is on a dirt road. You will hear a whistle emanating from a gas and kerosene saw mill. All of us heard what we thought were gun shots and truthfully, had we not have seen the parking area at the top of the hill, we probably would have turned around and left! There was a moment in time where all of us felt as though we had just become part of Deliverance! This place is another part of Arizona history and merits at least one visit! read more
