They screwed up my top install - after saying they knew how to do it. Called and said it was finished and ready for pickup. It wasn't. When I got it home I discovered just how bad it was. I waited a couple weeks till my anger subsided, then went back and asked them to finish/fix it - and offered another $500. They haven't answered emails and are obviously screening my calls since they never pick up. So now it's up to me to fix it. Extremely irresponsible & unprofessional. When the problem turned out to be bigger than thought they referred me to a specialist. Gary and his crew are quite possibly the nicest, most responsive and knowledgeable crew of auto mechanics I've ever had the pleasure of working with. When my Subaru XVTrek's "Check Engine" light went on, I called Gary, and he diagnosed the issue for free -- turns out all it needed was an oil change! So I brought it into Jiffy Lube that very day, saving the few hundred dollars I would have spent had I brought it to a dealer diagnose. I was so impressed by his kind gesture, he was the first place I thought of when I needed an expert opinion on some odd noises my car was making, and again, his crew diagnosed the issue instantly and repaired perfectly it for well below what I would have paid elsewhere. I had a problem with my '03 PT Cruiser, and based on the excellent reviews I read about Gary's Automotive, gave him a call and described my issue. Right away I was very impressed with his knowledge and calm, friendly manner. So impressed I was entirely willing to drive all the way to Port Townsend (over an hour away it, didn't know the distance when I called) to have him service my vehicle. As turned out, I didn't need to, because I was actually able to fix the issue myself (a simple bushing replacement) based on a clue I got from our conversation. I was fortunate that this was a very simple repair, but I came away from our interaction with the certainty that he is an excellent and honest mechanic, and if I ever did need work on my vehicle in the future, he is definitely the one I would go to! read more

Gary's did a quality job for a fair price, putting a fuel pump in my Dodge pickup. So, I went back again to have him put an aftermarket exhaust on my little car. 8m 8mpressed with this little shop and 8ts crew! I grew up with a professional mechanic as a father, and actually know quite a bit, but can no longer get under cars. I mention this, because I have some experience with mechanics and shops. Gary's Auto Service performed work on my vehicle without quoting me or getting my permission to do the work that they did. I wound up being charged $462 when Gary himself told me over the phone that the suspected issue was a $35 part that would take 10 minutes to put in, and that a quick diagnostic beforehand would confirm that was the issue. When I talked to Gary on the phone, he seemed certain my issue was related to the crankshaft position sensor I'd just replaced myself after an OBD code came up for it. Again on the phone, we both agreed it probably wasn't the fuel pump, since I'd already replaced the fuel filter myself and could clearly hear the pump running. And for what it's worth he seemed friendly enough, and squeezed me in on short notice. He asked me to have my car towed in on the weekend after he made room, and that he would call on Tuesday after he got a chance to look it over. So tell me, why didn't he call me before doing the work? Or ask me to come in? Why is the fuel pump the FIRST thing he replaced? Why did it take him two hours when I hadn't even put the back seat back in? It's four screws, 3 quick connections, and it pops right out. I did it myself in under an hour to replace the filter! It's all one unit and he told me they struggled to get it put back together and I just laughed a little and said yeah I had a hard time with it too, reminding them I'd just done the filter myself. But again, we agreed it WASN'T THE PUMP on the phone. Then it took them another hour of labor to just go ahead and replace the CKPS again (which, again, I did myself in LESS than 10 minutes), and that fixed it. I will commend Gary for turning a $35 part and what SHOULD have been a 15 minute diagnostic to figure out the sensor wasn't working, and 15 minutes tops installation, into a $462 job. That's actually impressive and pretty scummy in my opinion. He didn't call before doing the work on Tuesday like he said he would. He texted Thursday to say he'd lost my number and that my car had been sitting after for two days. What a mess. Take your money elsewhere, because you definitely don't get what you pay for here. As a follow up edit, I just checked and this is actually illegal in Washington state. RCW Title 46, Chapter 46.71 Section 46.71.015 states any work over $100 requires a written estimate and I have phone records to prove he didn't even call in the time between my vehicle arriving and two days after the work was finished. Hopefully Gary sees this, I recommend he gives me a call. read more

I moved to PT and didn't know anyone and I had some issues with my car. I called around everyone in town and even had another place put in a new starter. The other place was not super great on communication and I felt they were kind of flakey and that's when I called Gary! From that point on I was in good hands. He is honest and good at his work and so are his employees. I have since moved and had multiple problems with my car and even though he doesn't do transmission he gave me recommendations that have really saved from from headache after headache. I am now living a few hours from there and again I have got a recommendation by where I live and I'm currently waiting on my newest repair to be fixed. When you are in a small town with not very many options let me tell you where to go... Garys! I can promise he will tell you how it is and fix it well for a fair price! Excellent service. They were quick to get me in, gave me a loaner car to drive home overnight since it was late in the afternoon when I arrived, and didn't charge an arm and a leg to replace my brake pads, change my oil, and replace the oil filter. The work was done quickly, and well. Everyone (I met Kurt, Aaron, and Gary, I think) was very friendly and -- especially important to me -- didn't treat me like an idiot because I'm a woman. My experience at Gary's has surpassed all other local garage/auto service experiences by at least 1000%. The other local garages are overwhelmed and the turnaround time is unworkable (my friend's truck has been in a shop for TWO YEARS. No joke.) And the people at Les Schwab are nice but they are locked into pushing corporate BS for the sake of extra dollars. Gary's looks like a little out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall auto repair, and it is, but the service is just as good as you'll find in a larger, fancier, more expensive shop. The shop is clean, the job gets done correctly, on time and at a reasonable price. I've had three repair jobs performed there front brakes, alternator replacement and a clutch replacement and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. read more

Just had Kurt and Mike do a pre-sale inspection on a vehicle I ended up purchasing. Both guys were systematic and very attentive in looking over the vehicle. At one point they called me over to point out that the vacuum hose had been gnawed in two by a little critter. Without missing a beat, Mike repaired it on the spot, and later he topped off the radiator coolant. Nice work all around. Traveler's tip: When you turn off Hwy 20 and onto Martin Rd., keep on going. I had an issue with my motorhome transmission line leaking while passing thru Port Townsend. Gary was not able to help me due to space limitations to work on RV's, but he did call around to find others that might be able to help. He eventually got me connected with the great folks at Short Stop Diesel. They are able to work on RV's (gas or diesel). They even came out to meet us on site with their mobile repair rig, got my transmission line leak repaired and got us back on the road. read more

Gary with Gary's Auto Service is a rare breed of honest, knowledgeable and caring mechanic. He helped me limp along an old Audi well past its service date after going through several other shops that took me for all that I was worth. He then helped me find a new car that was appropriate for me even though the new car is a diesel and they do not work on diesel components (like the Maytag repairman of old)! We bought a used car and the check engine light came on, on the way home, so we brought it to Gary's to look it over and see if it was worth fixing or if we should just resell it. He told us it was a great car he said it might need a timing belt but we should be under $500 to get it running good. He got finished and billed us $800 without asking if we were willing to spend more, the car drove even worse when he was done, and the radiator was leaking! We took it back and he replaced a sensor which was what caused it to drive bad in the first place, he charged us another $200 and said the stop leak was working in the radiator so that should be fine for a while. It wasn't fine, and was leaking and steaming on the way home. My husband had to go buy a radiator and put it in himself, costing another $200. Which Gary would've charged another $800 for if he'd done it! Now a little over a week later the power steering is leaking like a sieve and Gary won't even take 5 minutes to look at it! I feel like he just scammed us into spending a bunch of money on a worthless car we should've just cut our losses on. We were more than willing to pay him to just go through the car and give us a list of problems and estimates so we could decide if we wanted to sink more money into it! Thoroughly disgusted, overpriced, won't return calls do not recommend! read more
